  • Today we have the updated Bajaj Dominar 400. It has been made more touring friendly with new equipment - hand guards, tall visor, luggage racks, pillion backrest, USB charging port and a phone mount. With these updates, the Dominar 400 now weighs 193kg (6kg heavier), and costs Rs 2.17 lakh (Rs 5,000 more, ex-showroom). However, Bajaj's flagship motorcycle remains the same mechanically. Shumi explains all the updates on the 2021 Bajaj Dominar in this first ride review.
And if you are wondering how it now fares against the new Royal Enfield Classic 350, stay tuned.

No doubt it's a good highway tourer. Tank display is meaning less totally while cruising at 100 you can't see on tank display. Handling freedom is not there like Himalayan. With the stock tyres it's bobbling on gravel roads tyres are also not good for rainy season & muddy slush. I have done 2500km on Dominar 2021 edition in Arunachal Pradesh. Only the wind screen & base plate make sense 👍on this bike. Other wise i will say this bike don't fall in any category of bike eg- Adventure tourer, scrambler, it's simply a highway cruiser.

Fun Fact : According to PD Dominar with 40bhp and 35 nm torque having 187 kg weight is heavier and felt sluggish but.... But... but... A Royal Enfield classic 350/Himalayan having 20/24 bhp and 27/32 nm torque and having weight of 196/199 kg is perfact in highways and everywhere. If they are allowed they can even say that the weight of RE bikes irrespective of the power figure helps them to stay attracted to the gravitational pull of the earth.. It's really sad how they are trying to manipulating mindsminds rather then giving a honest review.

low end torque is the only point they have in the defense of every RE bike when in comparison with other brands... as if it's a really big deal over power figures, advanced tech, led lights, power to weight ratio and build quality

  • @howlongyouwillplayvictimcard

I commute 60 kms a day and have clocked a milage of 5600 km on my Bajaj Dominar 400 UG. City milage is 32 - 36 kmpl depending upon the driving style. If driven hard it returns a milage of 23 - 25kmpl. If ride properly while keeping the rpm between 3000 - 3500 and shifting the gears at the right moment the bike has returned a milage of 43 kmpl in slow moving traffic at a pace of 47 km/h. On highways at speeds between 100 - 120 kmph, the bike returns an average of 28 kmpl.
However at stop and go traffic the weight can be felt. once it hits 15km/h its manageable. After that the bikes does feel heavy but is easily manageable. when stationary once the bikes flip to 85°, the bike being heavy, its a struggle once again to bring the bike to 90° position. If you are below 5'8" would suggest to take a test ride and especially try to handle the bike when stationary before finalizing on the bike.
Conclusion: Excellent bike to own and ride if you can handle it's weight.

Weight is always a negative side of D400, if 20kg weight loss possible then it will be great.
But again, over Classic 350, I'll pick D400 anyday..
Reason : Weight 190kg or 200kg with luggage is constant, but 40bhp over 21/22bhp is always better for touring.
D400's engine is much more usable than any RE's singles.

Dominar is not as durable as RE classic 350!
All the plastic on Dominar will break in few years and once the bike goes out of production, spares will not be available.
I have a 30 year old Bullet, and it runs like a charm, a relaxed ride designed to enjoy the ride and route.
I also have a duke 390 which is good but is a lot more demanding bike to ride.
RE classic 350 or Meteor 350 offers a relaxed ride and engine runs at low RPM. Which ensures that the bike has a long life.

    • @Xplore360india
      @Xplore360india Před 2 lety +38

@@arunkottolli durability depends on maintainance. Though I don't own RE, but I have one 2008 Hero Honda Glamour, and it's in very good condition. Plastics or fiber parts are not an issue, but the restriction of riding a motorcycle with 350cc engine, within speed limit of 100-110 kmph in 2021-22 is not so acceptable. Even their prices are very competitive with the modern motorcycles.

I rented the bike in Jodhpur. Took a long ride of approx. 400 km on the old Dominar and was impressed with the huge size of the bike which was perfect for me since I am 6'2 and the bike didn't make me feel huge. I was taken into surprise by it's pickup which was very scary for me considering I had never ridden a 400 cc bike before. Really loved how it grips the road and makes it's presence felt to everyone. The only thing I hated was the vibration after 80 km per hour which was really annoying since the journey was long and at the end of the day my hand muscles felt tired since I struggled to control the clutch which was a little big compared to my average sized hands and also the weight of the bike was very heavy for my friend who was 5'8. When the bike got stuck in the sand, Had I not been 6'2 and heavy weight I would not have been able to lift the bike from the rear to get it out even then it was quite heavy. Even after all that I enjoyed my day to the max with this super fast bike and the price is actually very decent.

I have the 2021 model and I've made about 200 km on it. When the weather gets better, i will go on long distance tours. Ive had a long-distance experience with this bike though. It is a very fun, comfortable bike. On the highways, you might be overtaken to a middle segment car since it only goes up to 176 kmh and doesn't reach that point easily (also the speedometer loses accuracy more the faster you go), however, it is safe to say that you will launch way faster than any other car you're launching with. The power is great for the city, and it is plenty enough for highways. However, id really appreciate it if this bike could go as fast as a duke. I only dislike the performance of the battery. Maybe in a warm country like india, the battery is okay, but in Turkey, it easy to say that you will have problems with it in winter. Also, sometimes it falls into fake neutrals, even though its not a big deal, it is very annoying. Maybe it has to do with the clutch setup, which you can set through the wire on top of the engine. Also the stock tires are not so good, especially in winter. I skid a few times.
EDIT: And also yes, i saw it in the comments as well. Why the hell is the fuel capacity is so bad. It is a big bike that was made for touring, it should have more fuel tank capacity. I hated having to get fuel constantly.
Great video. Thanks a lot for the review.

Why is Dominar's weight on the debate every time it's on discussion? as if it's the only problem it has. While there are other vehicles like Royal Enfield having the more weight than the Dominar.
Did Bajaj promise Dominar to be one thing but delivered something else? Is that the case?
If one is comfortable with Royal Enfield's weight (I see people from every physique riding it in & out of the city), shouldn't they feel the same with Dominar?

I love my fz because of its light weight and how easy it is to flick it around (also because it's a Yamaha and my blood is blue). I bought this bike specifically as a city bike but now I'm riding it more than anything else. To the point where I'm planning to sell one my bikes because I'm not riding it anymore. Don't get me wrong the dominar is a great motorcycle but there are other great options for touring that can double as your daily rider.

When dominar offers perfectly tourable motorcycle from showroom itself, why weight is a let down for you alone? Drive this under heavy winds you wont even feel the windblast, load the vehicle with whatever you want to take and along with pillion drive it with 120kmph speed without any hesitation is what you look for when you want to drive 300plus kilometres on a highway, you wont get bored for sure. Sounds like any old regular bajaj. Cheap, heavy and cumbersome. No surprises there. But for an inexpensive motorcycle what more can you expect out of it. If they improve which they are not going to do, the prices will go up by a pretty large margin and will be met by a lot of competition. So bajaj is trying to keep the cost low while still providing a bit of performance with a significant amount of drawbacks so they can cater to a large crowd. I'm from south India and I rarely see these bikes since a lot of people are now preferring quality over quantity.

It's always a tuff decision between RE and D400, it's a fight between Heart and Brain, if you'd take a brainy decision anyone would go with a D400, it gives you all the digital reads, Mac wheel-tubeless tires, speed as good a Interceptor 650 (D400 tho not high in NM as compared to Interceptor but it touches 160 and^)
whereas, Himalayan tube tires, you'd always need a specialist mechanic to repair that bike or even repair punchers. Needless to mention, each accessory is highly priced, i personally feel all RE products and accessories are over priced.
I own a 1995 bullet, trust me, you'd not want to hold onto a bike that's 26-30 years old.
RE or any such other bike that does not ease your life in repairs is not practical, holding onto such a bike is only emotion. Which is a lot. But not practical.
Needless to mention again, the service charges, RE super charges will fall once the bike turns 5 years and above old!! Bare that in mind!!!
