The indie shooters are really dominating this, and I really love it. Definitely an homage to every 90s FPS games.
All games should also have a center HUD option to at least a 16:9 aspect ratio for those using ultra wide screens. To few do this correctly and always force the HUD to the edges of the screen without a way to center it.
Im having a lot of fun with this one , I love that the in game messages are conveyed through barcodes . Good job with the video man .
This game is insanely good. It looked nice but I didn't expect it to play so smoothly.
The cooldown exploit is one thing, and slightly related to it: does this game have backpack reloading?

Haven’t heard of this, but just seeing the visuals, hearing the soundtrack, and watching you rocket jump with the super shotgun has me sold. Can’t believe they were able to take inspiration from Daikatana.
Im not sure if i like the idea of heavy movement focused shooters also having the ability to slow time, while this does help with aiming it can also be abusable and not as satisfying as mastering the combat without it.
Love the sound design on the weapons! Very impactful.
I always think I finally hit "boomer shooter" fatigue, but then a new one comes out and it is pretty damn good.

Dread Templar, Ion Fury, Amid Evil, Bullets Per Minute, Chex Quest HD, Powerslave Exhumed, Kill Crab... and then there's all the games on my wishlist such as Nightmare Reaper, Forgive Me Father, Dusk and Ultrakill... and then they just keep releasing more and more bangers like SPRAWL and Deadlink! And I still can't stop going back to Severed Steel to play the Rogue Steel and Firefight modes!
Some other awesome Boomer Shooters is the following that I've found while searching around; SiN: Gold, SiN Reloaded, Metal Hellsinger, Blood West, Anger Foot, Arkos 2, STAR WARS Dark forces Remake and Turok 3 remake, Coven, Retchid, Apocalyptic Vibes, Voidborn, Anomalous, Dino Trauma, Slayers X, Reaver, GHOSTWARE Arena of The Dead, Necromunda, illWiLL, Selaco, Hands Of Necromancy, Doombringer, Deadlink, Turbo Overkill, Perilous Warp, Dimensional Slaughter, Project Downfall, My Friendly Neighbourhood, Amid Evil Black Labyrinth, Sprawl and RoboCop.
A PvE retro shooter with wall running and rocket (shotgun) jumping? An easy purchase. Makes me hopeful that a PvE retro shooter with the gameplay of titanfall releasing. That was my gateway drug to movement shooters

Maybe off-topic, but am I the only one that enjoys watching Mayo's content, even though I disagree with a lot of it? It's interesting to hear a different opinion instead of limiting yourself to an echo chamber. I've watched all of his videos on Deadlink, Shadow Warrior (even though I find these games okay at best) and Ultrakill (well... some points are questionable, but I agree with him in certain aspects), yet it's just still solid content and most of his arguments are pretty good.
Games like Killbug or Sprawl are IMO really bad and I dropped them after like 30 mins of playing, but it's still cool to see someone show them from a different perspective.
I just don't understand all the drama surrounding this guy.

Shotgun boosting was shown in the trailers iirc. Maybe thats why it's not explained in the tutorial which is weird.

Keep the deadswapping in. It requires skills to perform it. Running around with the Shotgun doesn't really hurt the game as you will HAVE TO engage with the weakpoint system to optimize bullet time and the weapons are very well balanced.
Also, how long is the game?
You can argue for the deadswapping being fun if you want. You can argue in favor of its balance if you want. But you can not argue that it requires skills. You just press previous weapon twice. There's no skill involved.
@@underthemayo It requires MORE SKILLS than just mindlessly moving around with any gun and shooting it AND using deadswap effectively and consistently while also managing movement is not mindless. So at least the requirement for dead swapping keeps the "Mindlessness" away.

One thing that is a bit of an unfair complaint is that it "needs more enemies". I see this echoed a lot on several games, and considering your track-record I'm a little surprised to hear you say it. A game doesn't need "much", it needs "quality". If you can express dynamic challenges with just a handful enemies that should be totally fine. I haven't played SPRAWL (probably won't either, as I don't like bullet-time and it's very prominent here) so perhaps they aren't expressive enough here, but still - "needs more enemies" as a general complaint I very rarely agree with.
What I mean is that I'm looking for an enemy type that defines the game. Like when I think "turbo overkill", I see those guys with the TV heads. I'm just looking for something a bit more standout, AND, an enemy type with some more interesting AI patterns to engage with. It's not about numbers.
More enemy types
despite mayo never even saying anything about enemy quantity, this comment is just a couple of buzzwords about quality over quantity or whatever. While it may be theoretically possible, I see no way in how movement FPS as a genre can offer a ton of combat scenarios without having a fair amount of distinctive enemies that fill a specific role in combat. Obviously, the quality matters too, but you cannot go wild in combining these pieces together to create smart arenas if you have a very few pieces to begin with - you simply don't have too much options, so sometimes, yes, the game may need a bigger variety of enemies. imo trepang2 is a good example of this - once you understand the game the arenas feel kinda samey even if the game has a strong gameplay overall

Sprawl starts better. Dread Templar is better if you stick with it til chapter 3.

@@underthemayo Sorry to hear you didn’t like Titan Fall 2 (TF2). This next part relates to that and I mean this in the kindest way possible as I greatly respect how you spoke of the Doom Eternal Community Meltdown.
I can see how you’ve got Doom Eternal baked into your brain as the reference point for what keeps you entertained in a shooter. And I can appreciate that.
I grew up on Duke Nukem 3D Atomic edition and appreciate much of the same attributes of shooters as you albeit I’ve likely played less of them. I’ve also never really been big on FPS multiplayers.
And, you’re not wrong on what you said about TF2. For me, TF2 got me back into shooters after a 10+ years and the fun factor of the movement won me over as I find any other glaring distractions despite the weak AI.
The fun factor of the high skill ceiling hyper movement low TTK of the multiplayer kept me coming back despite the fact that I suck and get killed all of the time. But even I can kill a sweaty try hard a few times. I also can appreciate when I totally get outplayed.
If you didn’t like the Titans, try Pilots vs. Pilots using the Grapple on either War Games or Glitch. I’d guarantee it would rival the fun you had with Doom Eternal playing with a fun and supportive community…just saying..;)

There is one thing that annoys me about these games.
Back when Doom, Quake and the like released they were at the cutting edge of technology. They looked like they did because that was the best they could look.
I see these modern classic FPS games and they seem to strive to look old. They shouldnt, they should look new and modern but with classic gameplay.
I'm not saying they have to look amazing but there are engines out there with DLSS and Raytracing built into them. Make the games look good.
They also all lack skilled movement. Quake for instance has some of the most complex movement of FPS game. This is down to the fact you have jump strafing and air strafing. These allow you to do cool things, provided you master the mechanics. A lot of these new classic shooters have very bland movement and the wall running doesn't count. It needs to be more organic than that.

the indie shooters look like this not only to strive the old look, but also because 3D models are hard to make and animate, so most of the indie shooters focus on making the gameplay actually fun with stylized graphics as an homage to the games they where inspired, also just look at any AAA shooter like SW3 and DOOM ETERNAL they have amazing graphics
also about quake movmement you can say that was more complex, but was also very impratical unless you where a speedruner or a tryhard deathmatch player, most of the people who just played the canpaign didnt even knew about bhop or rocket jumping, modern shooters usually have more intuitive and pratical movement tech

Sprawl is thousand times better than Cyberjunk 2077
