    That Sirra bullet is NOT a Game King. It is a hpbt bullet and the game king is not a hollow point you need to read on the bullets to show what they do

      Guess you are right I made a mistake but one thing I am not is a dumb ass like you said. Going to get rid of Johnnys reloading bench because you have a real bad attitude and anyone that I shoot with I will also tell them about your bad attitude. Anyone who is trying to teach or show people reloading should not have an attitude like yours but should show people the mistake.

    Shooting at 200 yards like you are doing, and showing actual hunting distances is really helpful. It’s the results that matter, shooting gel at 10 yards gives me no good info. To bad you can’t get to 400 or 500 yards. It would be interesting to see what the minimum velocities are required to get proper expansion. Keep up the quality work JRB.

    • @martingagnon4547

      The trick would be to reload on the slow side with less powder, to replicate the velocities we could have down range.

    • @SuperOpinion8ed
      @SuperOpinion8ed Před 4 lety +4

      @Reel-Lentless At first I was thinking that would make a lot of sense. But then I wonder if that wouldn't change something ballistically like maybe it wouldn't stabilize coming out of the muzzle or some other kind of side effects of being loaded down. In theory the impact doesn't know how it got there. If it hits at 1800fps, it doesn't know how it started. But what about spin rates or yaw or whatever. I don't know enough to know what the answer is on this.

      @@SuperOpinion8edAt the very least it would change the angle of the bullet and its vector when it hit the gel due to bullet arc over distance. Downloading is still great but it’s not telling the whole story.

    The purpose for gel tests is to test bullet performance on impact. You tested just that at a reasonable hunting range. You tested what needs to be tested in an appropriate manner. Ya dun good!!! Don't change a thing.

  • @rickashford4005
    @rickashford4005 Před 2 lety +6

    I like your gel test format. I too, would hate all the walking. Your test solidified my argument against Berger VLD bullets. The first animal I shot with one pretty much did as advertised. There is nothing more disheartening than a blood trail that runs out after 10 yards... 10 YARDS!!! We searched all day and half the next morning for a spike buck I shot with one at about 60 yds with a .270 140gr VLD. 6 days later the buzzards led us to him. I got his winky little cull horns. He ran more than 350 yards. Begers philosophy is horribly flawed. The bullet does exactly as they claim. It dumps its energy inside the animal... doesn't always drop the animal in its tracks. I dropped the remaining Berger bullets in the trash, and went back to Nosler Accubonds and not a problem since. Some never took a second step.

    Re the 130 SGK, shot a hog and a deer with that bullet this past year. Deer had a softball size exit wound and went about 20 yds. with LOTS of blood on the ground. Good bullet for double lung shot, but I wouldn't want to go through the shoulder with it. Working on switching to the ELD-X, so really appreciate the gel test.

    The black crap you commented on in the block is actually from a explosion within the gel from air pressure. The bullet achieved such a large temporary stretch cavity that when it collapsed back in upon itsef it exploded the air within from the overpressure. Its kinda on the same principle as a Diesel engine using extreme internal pressure to cause a spark rather than using spark plugs.

This format was just fine to watch! Maybe some iPhone slow motion would work but if you don’t have one it’s not the worst thing it would still be way to fast for an iPhone anyway. Jrb, the Gel testing at hunting distance is excellent. This is great information. The format is fine.
    I also have hunted with a bow for a long time and definitely come from the school of penetration is king. I agree that a exit hole on the second side is usually pretty large and when you get a pass through in my experience the animal bleeds from both holes and the blood trail on a pass through is much better, making it easier to track the animal. Having the ability to punch through a shoulder on the second side is also a big plus IMO.
    Would love to see the Nosler Partition in 6.5 Creedmoor also. That has always been a great hunting bullet dumping some of its energy fragmenting in the beginning yet retaining the majority of its weight for penetration.
    The Hornady 143 ELDX looked great. That bonded Nosler looked good too (to bad they don’t shoot) The Game king was disappointing to me, would love to see the classic soft point game king tested. Maybe a partition vs softpoint gameking video?
    Keep up the great Vids. The gel testing addition of hunting bullets is excellent. Would love to see the MK262 at 200 yards also.

I got a full pass through but I blew up the shoulder pretty bad... I'm a novice, but from what I've read, a jacketed bullet like the SST is not designed to pass through the shoulder effectively, but is more geared for a behind the shoulder shot through heart/lungs. For a shoulder shot, the experts I gather recommend bonded or monolithic copper bullets.

    I thought this was a great test and result. The results let folks choose the bullet they want by the results shown. Example: someone shooting an AR platform my prefer the SST’s because of the cannelure. Someone shooting lighter weight animals would like the Game Kings or the Bergers.
    It would be ridicules to test all your loads in gel. But, when you work up some hunters or even some self defense rounds it is nice to see the business end of what the bullets do with accurate work ups.
    The invitation to the hog hunt is an open one and you will be welcome for years to come. Thank you for the props and all the hard work you do for the community.

    This year I switched from a 130gr SST to a 130 gr Accubond in my 270wsm and the results were dramatic. 130gr SST turned a quarter of a whitetail to jelly and I had to track as hundred to a few hundred yards often with little to no blood trail due to no exit. The 130gr Accubond anchored an 8 point buck with a double lung shot and the meat damage was much less than the SST. I'm a believer in the bonded bullets if you've got the velocity to make them perform.

  • @ultravioletexpress7873

    Thank you very much for doing this video. I reload 6.5 Creedmoor for the main purpose of shooting deer. Most of my shots are 100 yards or less so I am in fact looking for a bullet to expand quite quickly. I picked up some eld-x, SST, Berger Hunter, and Sierra Game Changer. the game changer is different from the game King because it has a green tip and it is supposed to act more like the Hornady but fly better and have tighter group like Sierra often does. I would love to see a video of the new game changer green tipped bullet hitting ballistic gel and compared to a Berger hunting round at 80 or 100 yards

  • @jlalbee
    @jlalbee Před 4 lety

    The Gameking is a hollow point that isn't intended to retain the weight of a polymer tip like the Hornady and Nosler examples you have here. Sierra is now making a bullet called the Game Changer which is a ballistic tip more like your other favorites. Great content, by the way.

    Love the ballistic gel testing thank you. Been using Barnes X bullets for 35 years now. They expand just like the pictures and hold together. at least 80 animals taken with different shooters. 98% one shot kills nine of them elk out to 365 yards. Out of a 257 Ackley only 8 recovered bullets. All just inside the hide on the far side. been working with the 127 lrx in the 26 Nosler. Seating depth is a little longer then I prefer in the case. Would love to see some ballistic gel testing on the Barnes

      Adding to my previous post. Finding bullet fragments in your hamburger is a little hard on the ivories. Shooting the 6.5 mm 127 lrx Barnes, shooting any overbore caliber there is always the possibility of bullet explosion with cheap bullets or bullets that shed everything at 200 yards. Not the case with a Barnes X. As recent December Arizona bull at 10 feet. Yes 10 feet. so much for all the range time at long distance. Another one shot Harvest with no meat damage. Keep up the good work, found your site today been watching different videos for 4 hours. Great stuff okay got to get to work.

    I have used Game Kings for years in several calibers and fragmentation damage is present in most of them, so long as you have clean broadside shots on deer they make dramatic and often instant kills, that said you should avoid raking or head on shots with these bullets, basically treat them like an arrow and you will be thrilled with them, if you don't want to wait for clean behind the shoulder broadside shots avoid them and go with a tougher bullet design. I often refer to SGKs as a delayed fragmentation design as they never come apart on entry but almost always do in the vitals, the only exception that I have found to date is the 140gr 7mm which behaves in a much more conventional manner usually leaving 3/4" exit wounds and never the 5-9" wounds my 270 and .30 cals make. The one thing that has always shocked me though is despite all the obvious fragmentation damage I have never recovered a SGK as they have always exited.

    I use 140gr SSTs in my 6.5x55 and 140gr Game Kings in my 7mm-08 and I have never recovered either from an animal, they may be rapid expansion bullets but both hold together long enough to exit even on pigs in my experience though the SST does leave a larger exit wound leading me to believe it retains more energy upon exiting. SGKs are clearly not designed to be a high weight retention bullet but they clearly have a superb track record among hunters, I use them in several different calibers ranging from 22-250 to 30-06.

    This was a great format with a lot of information. The only other thing I'd like to see is the 120gr ttsx. Your grendel and creedmoor will both love it. If you like weight retention and dead deer that bullet is king.
    I've shot deer with the 165gr gamekings and was severely disappointed in the fragments i found. Hence the switch to the ttsx in all calibers for me.

    Those SST are accurate. I've got 0.5" -0.75" groups with them with 39gr h4350. I might have to try the 143 eldx. Nice video!

    This video clearly shows the anti-6.5ers that this class/calibre is limited by two things, both shooter controlled--bullet style chosen to send down range and shot placement. '06s and magnums are not required but do have their moments to shine.

    I've shot two Doe with 160gr 7MM Gameking HPBT. The damage it caused was extremely excessive. I blew out a softball size exit wound on the first deer. The second deer hit in the shoulder and double lung and heart shot blew out the lining of the lower abdomen and dumped all of the guts on the ground. This was not an angled or quartering shot on the 2nd deer, but a right-angle, 90 degree shot. It dropped them both but were excessive from the fragmentation. I prefer a bullet that holds together. Thanks for your presentation.

    Love these videos. One of the best channels on youtube. I have to say that Im on the retain mass/penetration side as well. Not a fan of the exploding bullet type. I dont want to loose any meat. And shot placement is everything. Something you learn bow hunting.

    love the format Johnny, its great to see how these bullets perform at distance. It might be nice to know what velocity they are traveling right before gel though. Could use your gun mounted chrony at muzzle and your other one downrange? would help us determine how accurate BC values are for these bullets as well. More data to collect, but since your already putting them into gel wouldn't hurt to set up second chrony.

    Great test Johnny, being that we have seen you shoot deer from a tree stand it would be interesting to see the performance at 200 yards, then another test at 25 yards. I'm sure the bullets would all be allot more explosive at that range/speed and may lead to you wanting to try more bonded or solid options. Keep up the great vids and bring on 224V and 06 :)

      even though you don't like it so much a quick 2 minute shot of each bullet at the end of your bullet testing through the ballistics gell at 200yards and 25 yards would be a really good capping off to each and every bullet testing video imho. I would assume that the people who watch your videos are a mix of ballistic nerds, target shooters and hunters. The hunters would much appreciate the extra effort.

    Great video. As a hunter, I’m most interested in seeing how the different bullet types and brands perform in a realistic situation. We don’t need slow motion - just to see how the bullet performs is great.
    I started loading up the 150 gr Nosler ABLRs for my 7mm-08 a couple of years ago. I still need to work up some different loads to try and tighten up my groupings a little. Normally I’d load the regular ABs in 140gr but for some reason where I live they are like unicorn rare.
    I’ve also been loading the 110gr ABs for my 257 Wby - man they group well. I have yet to kill anything with it but I’m hoping to change that statistic next week.
    I have been a Nosler guy for a long time but I was curious at how nicely the two Hornady offerings performed. I’d be interested to see how the ELD-X, SST, and ABLR perform at say 100 yards. I know Hornady recently put out a 110gr ELD-X in .25 cal. Might have to try those out in my Wby.

    Enjoyed your efforts. I too am in the retained weight camp. I recently used the 6.5 on a big horn sheep hunt using 140SST. I was able to recover the bullet and was disappointed with its retained weight. Complete lead separation from the jacket. The jacket weighed 47 grains and I was unable to locate the lead.
    I don't think the interlock band is sufficient to hold the heavier lead from separating. Distance was 290 yards. I am switching to a bonded bullet for big game.

      I recently had the 180 gr sst bullets blow up like varmint rounds on two different whitetail, one at 175 yards with a solid rest quartering 300wm flattening the deer, it got back up and ran never to be found. I initially blamed myself until the next day when I shot a second buck at 40 yards quartering , bullet entering on the last rib. We recovered that deer about 75 yds away. the bullet never exited , just a massive splash wound on the entrance side a foot long that completely gutted the animal before it expired. Hornady advertises exceptional penetration on the box! I'm surprised you got real good penetration with the 6.5 in the test. Your videos are the best! thanks.

    I enjoyed this video and for the most part the format is fine. Only suggestion is swap the front and back pieces of gel after a few shots. I thought the Hornady SST was the better, they are quite a bit cheaper than the ELD’s.
