    Great idea! I’ve been trying to think of a simple way to do this without drilling into the support beam. I only have a single pile to cover in my basement project but I think I will try your method

    You failed the instant you left those bent over nails in, instead of replacing them with the proper lag bolts. All the moving and bending you did to them with that hammer probably only loosened and weakened them even more.

    Nice work man! What size brad nails did you use? 1" 3/4? Also, are you using 1x8's. I'm about to attempt this exact job!

    I noticed there was an outlet running down one of the columns, did you cover it? Or just remove it all together? I didn’t notice it when you were finished..

    What makes it so sturdy? If you have a 1/4” gap between pole and spacer I would think it would shake 1/4” each way. What am I missing?

    They are columns not beams. Beams are horizontal, columns are vertical

    • @WyldeWoodworks
      @WyldeWoodworks  Před 3 lety +1

      That's very true. I had to fact check myself when making this video and some places sell this as a "basement support beam". Although you are right it is technically a column. A+

  • @RichardT2112
    @RichardT2112 Před rokem

    Why did you just bend the nails and not use proper lag bolts??

  • @liamkane101

    What kind of wood, dimensions (1x6)???

    • @WyldeWoodworks
      @WyldeWoodworks  Před 2 lety

      I think I used 1x8 pine boards. That might change based on the dimension of your beam.

  • @nategrand9840
    @nategrand9840 Před rokem +1

    So, there's this thing called a hole saw. You can cut out a square collar the same size as the column cut it in half and now you have no need for construction adhesive. Unless you're staining or have some structural need for the wood, MDF is more stable. Then there's the jack posts which were holding the beams up with bent nails and gravity. The jack posts are also installed upside down, albeit there's no difference in compressive strength...

  • @imhooks

    Fwiw those are columns not beams. But nice work

  • @mondoconni

      I not sure. I've noticed most beams are secured that way. Not sure why.

    Why call these basement beams, as they are posts or poles, and you use that term throughout the video? I was looking to box in my main beam and ended up here
