Disney parks does not care about being historically accurate. For example, the changes in parts of the Caribbean, Jungle cruise were accurate. Also, the country Bears played western music, so it fit perfectly in frontierland. At another point Disney could’ve built a New Orleans Square in the expansion plots everyone would’ve been happy.

Disney parks would solve a lot of these thematic & attraction issues if they made an 'American Legends' attraction, likely a dark flume ride. You'd ride down a disneyfied version of the Mississippi as you meet & sing along characters from American folklore, such as Johnny Appleseed, Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyan, Davey Crockett, Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn, Ichabod Crane & the Headless Horseman & John Henry, heck, maybe even Br'er Rabbit.
In the end & after a drop, everyone reappears & sings Zip-a- Dee-Doo-Da as they bid you fairwell. Such a ride could inspire kids to learn more about these folk stories & characters that are a part of Amrican culture & being lost to time.
This ride could use elements from the lost Fronteer River Expedition attraction ressurrected.

I am a teacher and ashamed of myself that I don't know half the history of my country, so thank you for that! I never even remotely thought of a Country Bear adjacent restaurant, because I love the one in California, but I do agree that Tiana is probably going to take up a vast amount of real estate in that area. I definitely will be riding the ride, but I fear that cost-cutting will be key in their minds. It is one of the reasons why Runaway Railway really disappointed me, despite having loved the original occupant of that building. I think we will have our answer sooner rather than later, if projections of opening time frames are accurate. I hope you and your family enjoyed your most recent visit.

I'd like to see Liberty Square, the Tiana area and Frontierland renamed to Riverfront Square. It would allow them to take a step back thematically from the chronological and geographical handcuffs that previously existed. The over arching theme would be the waterfront communities that developed along the Mississippi, Colorado and other rivers.

    Great points Jack!
Re-theming the Pecos Bill restaurant to to Hungry Bear would make sense, but so would a New Orleans - Taina theme as well. In fact there is precedence for that in the history of Frontierland at Disneyland. Prior to New Orleans Square there was a New Orleans area in Disneyland’s Frontierland in the form of several facade buildings between what is now the Stage Door Cafe to Riverbelle Terrace - A New Orealns themed restaurant at the time.. There was even a riverside gazebo stage. And when you think about it, the Mark Twain is patterned after a riverboat going down the Mississippi to New Orleans, right down to jazz bands that use to play aboard it (even the famous New Orleans musician Louis Armstrong play there frequently). Then of course in late 1966 New Orleans Square opened to they incorporated those New Orleans themed buildings back into Frontierland.
So if they did some of this re-theme at the Magic Kingdom that would make perfect sense! And by the way, Pecos Bill was not original Disney IP, the character and tale is of American folklore of the late 1800’s the Disney adapted.

You know in Disneyland, Pirates is in New Orleans Square. So, if you’re in Frontierland and you are in front of Tiana’s Bayou and head towards Adventureland? What is the first attraction you come upon? Pirate’s! So that walkway from Tiana and Pirates should be dedicated to New Orleans and what folks in New Orleans say is Crescent City. So that walkway along with Tiana attraction between Frontierland and Adventureland should be known as the Crescent City. Furthermore both Tiana and Pirates are connected to Disneyland in New Orleans Square. To go beyond Big Thunder, I believe they should continue Frontierland’s arid theme and build an attraction of Aladdin’s Cave of Wonders using the blueprint of Soarin; a Coco attraction using the blueprint of Pirates backwards where instead at the end there’s a drop where you get thrown out of the Land of the Dead and last but not least bring Cars Radiator’s Racers to fill out that land behind Big Thunder. Then behind Haunted Mansion to connect to Frontierland build a Haunted themed Restaurant and bar and add a Jack and Sally theater to give folks a villains type experience that the whole family can enjoy until they can figure out where to put a Villain’s theme park!

What are your thoughts about expending the Louisiana/New Orleans/Tiana theme onto Tom Sawyer Island? That gives them a spot for new Orlean theme quick service, and convert the fort into a music stage...as well as other things.

I personally never understood the attachment to Splash Mountain. I’ve ridden it on both of my visits to Disney and… I was bored. Between the drops that is. So I’m really looking forward to this retheme because I LOVE Princess and the Frog - it’s one of my favorite Disney Princess movies! If the music and story is gonna draw me into that world I’m all for it.

Jack, really enjoyed how you put this into perspective. That said, I thought on the expansion ideas going pass Thunder Mountain and in keeping with the southwest theme. We need Radiator Springs and Ornament Valley. It would fit right in and adding Route 66 is perfect. Just think on it. Coco and Encanto just wouldn't fit in as they are not American southwest.

Am I alone when I say that I think they could've fixed this entire "controversial ride's" controversy by simply adding an very well done AAA of Uncle Remus? I mean the man won an Academy Award (granted honorary due to his skin color) for the role and was the first African American to do so. This would've given true tribute to him where tribute was due while not causing such an uproar. I think everyone would've supported this.
It's so funny because i'm a black guy and was raised in black culture (from New Orleans) and nobody in my culture ever raised concerns about the Songs of the South or Uncle Remus. We all actually loved him and looked up to him as a person with true wisdom. This whole transformation seems to be unnecessary and the result of other cultures putting their noses where they really shouldn't be and telling them what is appropriate and what isn't appropriate in their own culture. Not to say the subject matter of the movie isn't controversial but what Disney movie from that time was truly "woke?" None of em. That is understood by all fans of Disney.
    Just my two cents

Pretty sure Frontierland is based off a town in Northern California, kinda throws off the the time line of the video. You could just say what Disney says, we’re putting ip in the parks and you can deal with it (yes I know splash mountain was ip but the ride was more well known than the original movie)

  • @kevinbhieey9188
    @kevinbhieey9188 Před 4 měsíci

This took on a life of its own...
Your Westward Expansion progression is exactly what Disney was going for when building Magic Kingdom, but you've misidentified the location. In Disneyland, where the original Frontierland is, you cross a bridge from the hub, over a "river" and then enter Frontierland through the wooden arch. That "river" symbolizes the Mississippi River and you're not in the "Western Frontier" until you cross it. (The "Wild Frontier" is a reference to nature in general and is not specific to any region.) This also occurs in Magic Kingdom, but in a much cheaper - though also clever - way. Coming from Liberty Square, right before the very tiny Frontierland arch, there's a stream next to the fort. While it doesn't go under "a bridge", Liberty Square and Frontierland are clearly delineated by differently-colored concrete separated by a narrow metal border. The stream flows under this and reappears on the other side, where it empties into the Rivers of America, which is the continuation of the "Mississippi River". Which it totally is: Tom Sawyer Island, Mark Twain, stern-wheelers... even the old Mike Fink Keel Boats were based on a Davy Crockett episode where they races keel boats to New Orleans, a feat that can only happen on the Mississippi. (I think back when the park was built, the fort continued to the edge of the Rivers, similar to Disneyland's version.)
Yes, there's that Country Bears movie, but in true Disney fashion, canon isn't necessarily adhered to when making a movie. When Disneyland opened, Frontierland was basically Missouri. While some believe the Frontierland arches are based on St Louis's Gateway Arch, that came many many years later. It's most likely Kansas City, which was on the Missouri - hence the RiverS of America and not just the Mississippi - and was considered the actual Gateway to the West before St Louis stole the title. (St Louis as the Gateway makes no sense as it was built to make money from trading up and down the Mississippi. Meanwhile, the three major Trails - Santa Fe, Oregon and California - all passed through KC's Jackson County.) Beyond this - which is now just referred to as "Missouri" in Disney lore - it was all just exploring the Wild West. In fact, the "river" that we cross into Frontierland used to flow into the Explorer's Boat Ride (pre-Jungle Cruise) - and then into the Rivers of America, meaning you had to cross what was possibly the Missouri River to get "out of" Missouri to explore the Louisiana Territory portion of the new Frontier. In the other direction, towards what is now Big Thunder, you went exploring in the Spanish Territory, which conveniently had a Mexican restaurant right there! As Disneyland grew, the Imagineers got to work creating the myth of everything. Disneyland had a similar progression: From Missouri, you followed the Mississippi "south" to New Orleans. Beyond New Orleans were the Indian War Canoes - oof - which were part of Indian Village - oof again. Once the Country Bear Jamboree was built, the area was renamed Bear Country, and was modeled after the Pacific Northwest, as it was in the northwest quadrant of the park. (This mapping has always been in place as even the most-northwestern part of Indian Village - just no - had totems and buildings from the PNW. Some say it's the Rockies. If so, it's the Rockies in Washington and/or Idaho!) Since then, the Imagineers have been kept busy trying to tie everything into a geographical Frontierland. Bear Country became Critter Country, based on a quote from Song of the South, which takes place IN GEORGIA. (And then they added the BRITISH Pooh characters, which I just now realized don't have British accents!) So Critter Country became a place in "Texas" which tied in a little better with the Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes, since that's where he died - I mean, paddled his canoes (wink wink) - so it was technically the South while still being the Western Frontier. With Big Thunder, that area continued being the "Spanish Territory", which is why that first road into Frontierland has Missouri on one side and the Wild West on the other. The canon refers to this as Rainbow Ridge, referencing the original Disneyland attraction, and placing it in Arizona. As Jack points out, Big Thunder is way more Utah than Arizona. And the original Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland was clearly based on Yellowstone. I think Rainbow Ridge is in a more nebulous "Arizona", mostly because the most-famous Wild West mining town is Tombstone, Arizona.
Anyhow, all this means is that there is no way MK's Country Bears are wherever the movie says they are. This is definitely west of the Mississippi. In fact, the archway to Adventureland is like the archway in Disneyland with Missouri on one side, the Western Frontier on the other. (The Disney history sites refer to the architecture as "St Louis Architecture", which is not a thing. It's no different than what was going on everywhere else in the West.) While the fort doesn't give much of an indication as to where we are after crossing the "Mississippi" - might it be Lewis & Clark's fort that they built in KC? - there are lots of clues to the west of it. Grizzly Hall may have gotten such a specific name as Grizzlies were found almost everywhere west of the Mississippi at this time. The Prairie Outpost & Supply is referencing the American Prairie, a vertical swath of land which stretches from North Dakota down into Texas. Pecos Bill is the main clue here, as he was a Disney TV character specifically from Texas, and may be the inspiration for all of this. His Tall Tale Inn is based on all the ridiculous stories he used to tell, one of which is that he started the Gold Rush and invented "There's gold in them thar hills!" (There are more clues: Disneyland's Bear Country, which was planned after MK opened, became "Texas" only after the arrival of the Country Bears, suggesting it was mostly about story continuity between parks. Also - and this is really burying the lede - the Trading Post used to be owned by Texas John Slaughter, another Disney TV character.)
Texas was the easy part. Big Thunder is in Tumbleweed - an even more obvious Tombstone reference - so how do we get from Texas to Arizona? We know Splash Mountain was changed a bit from the California version because it needed to match Big Thunder (mostly in the color and all the extra "mining" buildings). Which means the "Arizona" border is somewhere south of Splash Mountain. Across from this is the Spanish Hacienda portion of Pecos Bill's. While many blame the Pirates of the Caribbean for this theme, that's dumb. Here, Pirates is clearly in Adventureland and it's fairly obviously surrounded by Caribbean architecture, which is not the same thing as Spanish architecture. But we aren't in Texas anymore because between the hacienda section and the Town Hall is a Chinese Laundry, which was NOT something Texas had at the end of the 19th Century. Phoenix did, so the Town Hall is probably the divider between "Texas" and "Arizona". What I can't find any info on is what the area between Splash Mountain and the Adventureland arch is supposed to be? More Arizona? Mexico?
So why are the Country Bears in Texas? Originally meant for a resort in California's Sequoia National Forest, that plan didn't pan out and they moved the idea to Florida. Originally the bears were going to be from the Sequoias and just came in from the forest every night to perform their show. In fact, it wasn't originally country music, but they switched over to country only because it was going into Florida. So they gave all the bears Southern backgrounds, with several being from Florida. Big Al "played the swamps where MK ended up being built". Their back-stories were quickly buried when it was going to be cloned for California because Disney felt it was more important that they be based in the Pacific Northwest-based Bear Country, and back then Disneyland was definitely the one deciding what was canon. (Some refer to this as the Rockies, which it also may be as Big Al was born in Pocatello, Idaho, and it didn't sound like he ever left his cave area until he mysteriously ended up in Florida.) So the story is that Ursus H Bear got all his kinfolk together for one big show, and this theater was built - in the Magic Kingdom - to relive that great night over and over again. I think the one in Disneyland was supposed to be the actual cabin. It's unshockingly muddled.
With all that interesting - but totally useless info... hope you liked! - what's the chance of "Texas" turning into "New Orleans". I think it's more likely than Jack does. Changing facades is not that expensive. If that's all Disney had to do to keep people coming in, that's all they'd do. Princess and the Frog takes place in 1920s New Orleans, which is less than 30 years after these Frontierland buildings, so they wouldn't have to change much. And they probably won't after seeing what a cheap job they did with Tiana's Palace in Disneyland. Anything with wooden railings? Iron railings! Add balconies to the rest. A new paintjob and we're mostly done!
That said, they might actually choose to keep "Texas" because "Arizona" is definitely on the chopping block. Tiana can't be across from hacienda architecture. The only thing that could replace it is Tiana's Palace. Because the actual restaurant building is hidden by so many different facades, it wouldn't be that difficult - or costly - to retheme the whole thing. Considering how large Pecos Bill's is, the whole Mexican area will have to be New Orleans. Which is fine as New Orleans is a gateway to the Caribbean and works so much better than what's currently going on. Though I guess if it is Mexico, then that's also Caribbean-adjacent.
    That's all! I swear!

The biggest issue I have personally is the fact that this ride just looks competely out of place. Yes I understand that it is set in New Orleans however, non of the foilage represents new orleans and looks more like a tropical jungle and not representative of what a true Louisiana looks like. This ride belomgs in Adventure land with the flowers and foilage that is on it.

If it wasn't from Mowana in EPCOT I would be awaiting a good surprise with Splash Mounting retheme, however my visit to WDW Epcot sow a retheme to the front of the park with trees 🌳 and I didn't agree with this, I have the feeling that trees don't agree with Frontierland ether as they mess the image of the ride up and how the area looks. That's not to say I won't go on it or like it. However, I do not fully agree to the retheming of Walt Disney Splash Mounting. I loved the idea of it being very western. Something tells me that there is a possibility that this could be just the start to New Orleans being built.

People are turned off by the re-theme because they disagree that its being themed to an IP that's 14 years old and didn't do particularly well at the box office. It's also one of only a few projects even going on so its hyper scrutinized. I'm sure it will be fine, although I'd rather have seen another IP used.

This is a great explanation to make it work better! I hope this means Frontierland as we know it will stick around- I know cowboys and the wild west aren't as popular as they used to be, but it's one of the staple lands Disney has had forever. Even the parks that don't have a "Frontier"land have some sort of western aesthetic land, like Westernland or Grizzly Gulch. Plus, it wouldn't make sense to put all this emphasis on Nashville Country Bears and then retheme it all to New Orleans!

  • @MattMcIrvin

The idealized rural Southern landscape of the original Splash Mountain was never really "frontier" either--it was the old South, not the old West. So at worst the thematic mismatch is a wash.
