Don gives you all of the knowledge that you need about Caffeine in tea and does a bit of caffeine mythbusting.
The area of caffeine in tea is quite complex and full of misinformation. Many sellers continue to claim that Green and White tea has the lowest caffeine which is simply not true. In this video Don has tried to accumulate all of the research on caffeine into one video. If you have any other caffeine related knowledge to share then please do write and we will try to update this description.

if tea drinking makes people as happy as you,, the world must drink tea!!! love your videos..
I work late nights in front of my computer, and very often I'll be having tea as I work.
I find that if I have coffee the energy comes in too quickly and I get jittery, and very quickly it goes away. Tea helps me keep focused for the several hours I work for.
This is easily your most visually interesting and well edited informational video to date!
Well said. The island tour made this really fun to watch.
If only we could be on an island every week!
This was a great breakdown with interesting visuals. Thanks.
I'm a bit obsessed with these videos. Maybe very obsessed.
;) we like obsessive people so cheers for watching
Don't start watching Tea house ghost or you'll have two channels to obsess on
Haha it is a pandemic tea virus xd
They’re such a good resource and nice to watch

All I ever wanted to know about caffeine in tea in 16 minutes... Just perfect
Oh thank god. I knew that green/white tea myth could not possibly be true. Logically it just made no sense, yet I saw it everywhere! My mind is now at ease.
I thought the quality of this video was good, until the moment he recorded himself on a scooter with a passenger while keeping himself in the shot the whole time. Amazing! This guy is an entire research team and camera crew!
Wow the quality of the video is insane, information is clear and concise. Love it, it really helps educate the masses. You are doing a great service to the tea community!
Thank you!
@@MeiLeaf also i was amazed by how you filtered out the sound of wind during the motorbike scene
How can he pull off presenting all that information while driving a motorbike?
Always on a cheerful note. I started a business because I watch these vids. Thank you Don. A successful tea business for 7 years now because of your knowledge and inspiration. Cheers
Across the world, we are replacing tea with coffee because of heavy marketing and proliferation of "café". Let's hope we return to tea and the beautiful tea rooms in near future with this wisdom!
Your videos are phenomenal. I've been watching them all over the past few days. Props to you!! Keep it up! So well made!
Thank you for all the thorough work you do to provide us with compact information. It is
very much appreciated!
Let me tell you, first of all your channel is one of them that made me get more intrested in tea ,now I'm drinking quality tea on regular basis.
Now about caffeine, I noticed that I'm not only sleep better, even having cup of oolong at 8 pm ,than.ever before,I'm calmer and I just feel better,my digestion and lbs symptoms improved.
Thank you.
Hey Don! Great stuff here! I fell in love with tea many years ago and actually worked in the industry for a few years. This video hits home because the passion that I have for tea (which you understand for sure) is coupled with a caffeine sensitivity which, if I'm drinking tea, must be consumed in small amounts (half cup or less) at specific times of day (roughly 7am and 2pm). If I stray from this routine I will encounter headaches and moodiness. I've been on and off tea for the last 10 years and have always been trying to figure out how to continue my love of tea without the adverse affects of caffeine. BTW your videos are fantastic!
I went from 304 lbs to a current 215lbs from eating whole foods and a lot of experimentation with types of work outs. I currently find bicycle riding and indoor rowing to be most beneficial. insomuch as an all body work out and calorie burn. Long story short I am serious about my health and have found that tea is probably more beneficial than coffee. I subbed to your channel because of the serious information you provided. Thank you and I kn ow have found a better use for my French Press until further notice
Thanks for taking us on this informative adventure! Your channel is incredibly well-executed. I appreciate your work greatly.
Love. this. so. much. Don !
A study I read a while ago suggested the shorter you steep tea, the more caffeine you would get. Source was legit but common sense and cultural traditions were pointing the other way. Where do you stand on this ? Any sources ?
Hey Alex,
This does not make any sense. Given the same variables (amount of tea, water, temperature) a longer brew will extract more caffeine. I have not seen any study comparing the amount of caffeine from a 5 min brew vs 20x 15 second brews. Maybe this is their meaning?
BTW I am up for that collab if you want to explore then please email!
Ok. That's what I think anyway, and that's also what I can feel when I drink chitir' leftovers haha. ( 100% up to do something )
I sent a CZcams private message :)
Mei Leaf I would love to have it too please!
Amazing video, really instructive thank you!
I think it related to the fact of the tannins binding caffeine. If you brew longer you get more tannins taking off the caffeine effect, but you also get more caffeine on the other side.
Learned a lot. Thanks for making the videos even on your vacation! Really appreciate it and enjoy them.
Excellent Video! Just getting serious about tea thanks to you Don. I have a sensitivity to caffeine so it is very helpful to understand the levels of caffeine in different teas from the roast to the time of harvest. Your video dispelled many preconceived notions about caffeine and tea. Thanks so much!
This was absolutely brilliant! I am caffeine sensitive, but I love tea SO MUCH! This is exactly what I needed to hear! Cheers from Texas
Thank you for adding references! Not only that but they are all reputable!! Definitley subscribing
Cheers George
This is an excellent video. Exactly what I wanted to know and with a great delivery. Thanks Don.
Found your tea videos today. Really enjoying them so far. Informative, detailed, with great science yet conveyed simple enough to understand. I like being able to dig deeper into my new hobby of tea with your videos. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for including reference links! I look forward to going through them.
Wow, this video is packed with information, very coherently delivered, and manages to be so visually pleasing as well! Really liked it :)
Thank you very much, Don! I have watched every episode (well, not sure if I memorize all the knowledge you have given). But thank you again and I hope to see you in two weeks in London if you have returned home.
Greetings from Rhode Island USA. Thank you for the In depth info. I switched from black coffee to loose leaf black tea three years ago. Done some research but it's so much easier to have someone else do it.😁 Much appreciated.
Hey Don, just started watching your videos and really enjoy them! Thanks for all the information. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but just wanted to share: roasting coffee does impact the caffeine, light roasts are higher caffeine and dark roasts have a lot of the caffeine removed in the roasting process (source: husband works at a coffee roasting facility). Now I'm off to watch more of your videos!
I really appreciated this information. I cut out caffeinated drinks because they caused my blood pressure to spike and migraines. I noticed this effect when drinking coffee (robusta mostly). After cutting caffeine out, my blood pressure returned to normal. I am encouraged to think that it is safe to reintroduce small amounts of tea from time to time without having to worry about an adverse reaction. Thank you.

NICE!!!! You've really done your homework it seems: i am impressed. You take a scientific approach to everything you do, with good references, sound science and even nice little scientific experiments of your own: BRAVO!!!!
I'm a long-time tea fan and know quite a bit to begin with, but now that I've gotten a job in a tea shop I decided to up my tea knowledge game.
Love the moped point of view and drive-by explanation.
Well articulated and enthusiastic, you would be a great teacher!
First time in your channel, and I was amaze how you give us the complete details, speaks very clearly 👏 .
really good work on supplying peer-reviewed references! as a biomedical scientist this makes me very happy :)
This video was perfect for what I was looking for. Great work!
You are so good at presenting, your videos are a joy to watch! 🤩
Great stuff thanks for sharing!
Love your videos! You are charming and good natured, the videos are lively and informative!
Incredible video Don! I've learned a lot from this one :)
I've got a suggestion for another educational topic I'd love for you to cover -
Taking an in-depth look into the visual cues of the dry+wet leaves. Ex: how to visually distinguish between buds and 2nd/3rd leaves, determining oxidation level, processing method and so on... Thanks Again!
OK!
Thank you for the effort that has gone into this & what an incredible amount you were able to teach in the time, I'm in awe 🌿🏍 👏
Well done, what an excellent video. The passion you have about tea is admirable.
Thank you for debunking the diuretic myth. This has always worried me. And for all the other amazing information. Your style is beautiful and clear and I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Love from Australia.
Very informative video. Thank you for clearing up the myths!
AMAZING video!!! I am so glad you made this video. I LOVE tea! Thank you!
I love your videos. Very informative. Thank you!
So far for me different types of tea and farmers and batches have been similar to Cannabis strains. Some can cause panic or anxiety, some are too heavy, and some are just splendidly useful.
Great video!
One reason why people think caffeine is so bad is energy drinks. About half of them in the US have 300+mg per can. I work with people who drink 4 or 5 cans a day and complain about high blood pressure and heart palpitations. On top of that, it's not a naturally occurring caffeine so your body can't process it as well.
Naturally occuring caffeine and the caffeine used in energy drink are chemically identical
Thank you very much! This video was quite informative.
Grazie grazie grazie and again grazie! I'm very sensitive to caffeine and these infos helped me so much! Cheers to you and Celine! :)
This is a great video as always Don - packed with lots of useful information! I love how you are integrating tea and travel and loving the science-based video! Yulia
Finally a clear video, where everything is expressed in a proper way! Thank you for what you do, Don! Love your channel :)
I'm sufering from anxiety and panic disorder. so I surely can not drink coffee. and even black/green/ oolong tea can get me anxiety and panic attack. so I can only drink herbs tea and flowers tea. but apparently I have to be careful with rose bud tea. tried 3 small buds and steeped for 5 minutes in a cup of boiled water, and it went fine for me. but today I found out, 4 big buds + 1 cup boiled water, steeped 15 mins (+ 1 tsp honey later when it cooled down), and it got me anxiety and panic attack pretty bad. heart palpitation, disoriented, jittery, stomachache, and finally the most horrific is impending doom (as always). and I thank you I found your vid. this gave me quite clear explanation about caffeine. for I have read an article wrote rose buds still contain caffeine -but I didn't believe it-, now I do. 😌
This was extremely informative, thank you
excellent video. extremely well explained - good pacing. contains jargon - but its explained in simple language with context which helps to understand the ideas being shared. Thanks for the well structured video.
Thank you Don! Excellent presentation that confirms and expands my understanding of the subject; like your experience, a question that recurs in every one of my tea sessions. Hoping to visit your tearoom next visit to UK.
Awesome info as always! Thanks!
Wow ! Learned so much!
Thanks for your hard work. Great videos.
The information that you impart is so helpful and interesting that I want to listen to ALL the videos that you have made. I am certainly becoming more knowledgeable with each subject about Tea but this segment about caffeine in tea was the most helpful of all.
Very helpful and informative! Thank you!!
Fininally, after years of research, i found the information i have been looking for. Thank you😊
I could just tell this would be quality content! Brilliant video
Good that tou mentionned kukicha cause Thats a really good Tea and its really cheap according to its quality. So I want people to try that.
Hujicha (wich is often are made of kukicha) is another excellent evening Tea! Its good to inform people about this because a lot of people get the wrong information as you mentioned about the amount of coffein in black, green etc. We Have Made it too easy for us in the west!
Just placed my first order all the way from Casper, Wyoming! I'm so excited to see what your teas are like compared to what I am used to finding locally! Thank you for all of the information on your channel, you've inspired me to make tea I actually enjoy drinking.
Well, how did it taste?
@@jdubdoubleu Their tea is truly amazing... I've looked for some that I could order here in the U.S. since then and I always end up back at meileaf... I am currently drinking some of their guangxi silver needle... I'm not going to try and describe flavors because I don't have as developed palette as most and I wouldn't want to mislead you, but their tea is very delicious and to me it is worth the premium price... if you're on the fence order one of their flight boxes... they're reasonably priced and you get an assortment of tea. It's a great entry point to decide what best suits your taste too!
FINALLY ONE MAN WHO USES SCIENTIFIC PUBBLICATIONS to talk about science!!!
Thanks man, thank you so much. This channel is 100% legit and this is the video I was looking for to answer a lot of questions I have!
Amazing video. Thank you for your unbiased information.
Always explained so articulately and with great suggestions for reducing caffeine. You rock Don!
Cheers Jake
Wow that was amazing I learned so much. You're a legend.
This is an excellent video... Thank you. These years of Covid I have discovered many things which otherwise may have gone unnoticed or certainly unappreciated as a valuable part of lifestyle. Covid has given me the time to deep dive into Tea, Cigars, Wine, Whiskey...
What a time to be alive..!
I so love these videos. I'm a beginner and there is so much I do not know about tea
Anything with caffeine gives me anxiety......drives me crazy. Excellent video!! For years everyone would tell me no caffeine in tea. But, I'd keep trying different teas an most of time I'd feel it. Other times not so much.....I thought it was me. Great information!
Thanks for what you do ⛩

Thank you soooooo much for this easy to understand video rich of clear information!

I'm so excited for this video! I recommended this video be made a few weeks ago!
Yep this one was yours!
Wow! It was so much more informative than I thought! Thank you so much!
A lot of information thrown at you but you asked for it so there you go!
This video is so informative!
Great video like always! I'd love to see you guys do a blind taste comparison with different sources of water on the same tea, such as tap vs. spring vs. filtered vs. distilled vs. bottled, etc. I've heard a lot about how important the kind of water is with tea brewing, so I'd love to see what you guys could conclude about what it does to the taste.
Fain I would really like to see that too! I live in Texas, and we have abundant hard water! Curious to know if I should be doing tap water or bottled. Or what effects the hard water could have on my teaware.
Yes this one is incoming too!
Fain Agreed!
Great video :)) I definitely would be very happy if you keep making more videos based on scientific research. I enjoyed the part about all the psychoactive substances in the tea drunk video. You could make videos about theanine, cathecins... and all the other substances in tea. I'm sure you'll find plenty of viewers that will be happy about those more geeky videos. Oh and have to say it's really nice to see this Thai-reportage style of filming :)
We enjoy the reportage filming too.
Super informative!! So thank you!🙏🏻😌🙏🏻!!!!!!!!!!
what a great, informative video!!! Just discovered your channel and as a teahead- i find it incredible. SUBSCRIBED! :)

Awesome! You have my gratitude for this video. There is also a nice tea called Lao Cha Gu ("old tea bones") which is puehr prepared from sticks but not from leaves - perfect choice for those caffeine-sensitive who love shou puehr
Thanks!
Fantastic video. This channel is going places! i can see myself making a hipster-comment about how I was watching you videos when you only had 5000 Subscribers.
Hahaha as long as you don't do the hipster thing of disowning us if we become more popular!
Thanks so much
Great video visually and very interesting info there too. I've been drinking lose green tea for a long time now. I might check oolong at some point for the lower level of caffeine... Thanks and keep it up!
