  • Hi Everybody,
I finally finished the office remodel and have started work on the track again...yay!
All but 2 pieces of the foam have been coated and finishing the bar rail (that goes around the track table) is the next priority once I've put some of the ground cover on the coated foam pieces.
As always, let me know if you have any questions/comments.
    Be safe and have fun!
    Cheers,
    Jeff (Garage Maker Guy)

I love the way the fencing and guard rails turned out on the banked turns. Everything looks awesome. The blotchy grass looks perfect. Nice work.

Hi Slater, Thanks for great comment. It has been a lot of work but it is moving in the right direction. I will be crashing more of my cars soon but the crashes will look better against the new scenery...lol.
      Happy Holidays!
      Cheers,
      Jeff (Garage Maker Guy)

Jeff, your track and table looks great! Do you mind sharing how large your table is and your track pieces?

Hi Dwayne, Thanks for watching, the comment, and the questions.
My main table is 16X8 with extensions to support the parts of the layout that extend past the main table.
See this video for details of the layout:

I would love to order the lights as well, happy to wait for them, how do i get in touch?
you dont happen to have your track in a layout document/planner?
if you would do anything different knowing what you know now, what would you change?

@@sitmark Hi Steven, Thanks for watching, the comments, and the questions.
Re: Ordering the 3D Printed Parts for the Lighting, Catch Fence, Guard Rail System I developed.
Send me an email: The_Def_J@yahoo.com and provide me with some information about your layout and where you would like to add the catch fence, guard rail, and lighting. I will get back to you within a day or two of receiving your email.
Re: What I would do different...
a.) Now that I have used the foam with the foam coat for building the terrain, I will never use the plaster cloth again. Plaster cloth works great for train layouts or areas of the scenery that the cars will not come in contact with but is messy and fragile (not even close to the strength of coated foam).
b.) Planned and built in the hoist system to the table as I eventually want to raise the entire table about 6 feet so I can use my pool table and have access for wiring areas of the underside of the table that are currently not easily accessible. However, I built the layout I wanted and I did not want to be limited by where guide wires/lift points were but this will make it more difficult to implement a lift system for the table.
That's about it as I am super happy with the way it is turning out.
Take your time, go through several iterations (aka: try several different layouts) and make something you're happy with. Enjoy the hobby.
      Be safe and have fun.
      Cheers,
      Jeff (Garage Maker Guy)

Great video. What foam are you using for the inlay?

    • @garagemakerguy1808

Hello "Oldskool62", Thanks for watching, the comment, and the question.
The foam I'm using is "Extruded Polystyrene" (aka:"XPS"). This can be found at most home improvement stores as it is commonly used as rigid insulation. I've been using 1" and 2" thick sheets (4' x 8') cut a layered as needed.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
      Cheers,
      Jeff (Garage Maker Guy)

Are you selling the complete lights Jeff? If so I'd be interested in about 20.

    • @garagemakerguy1808
      @garagemakerguy1808  Před 3 lety

Hello Greg, Thanks for watching and the question.
Unfortunately, I am not currently selling the completed lights and here are some of the reasons:
1.) The liability for the electrical portion (the USB socket, the LED bulb, and the wiring). Even though the lights run on only 5 volts DC, and I test every one of the completed lights, there would be one person out there that doesn't connect it properly, uses something other than a 5 VDC power supply, or has bad wiring that could cause an electrical shock or fire.
2.) Keeping all of the materials in stock (in addition to the 3D printing supplies) is not something I really want to do.
3.) The catch fence material (aka: "Kwik Mesh" and the "U-Molding") is cut to fit each section and everyone's track layout is different.
4.) The length and angle of the bend in the aluminum tubing also varies greatly between track layouts. Example: The turn in my video has multiple light posts (aluminum tubes). Although all of the light post tubes are 10" long, the angle of the bend changes as the bank turn changes (this is done to keep the lights level so that light shines down onto the track and not into your eyes). Also, the length of the aluminum tubing can be different depending on if you have the boarders attached to the track or not (this is important as you want the light to be focused on the center line between the slots in the track).
5.) Affordability - I wanted to make sure everyone can afford this. If I have to factor in my labor/time into this then the price would be ridiculous.
However, I do offer the 3D printed parts for sale (I make them to order and depending on the size of the order it takes ~2-4 weeks). I have filled several orders with no complaints.
These are not that difficult to put together. It does require some basic skills and little patience but the end result is worth it.
I will be making another video about how to assemble the lights/catch fence/guard rail (higher quality in more detail) after the holidays.
