    Black holes are fascinating objects predicted by Einstein's theory of general relativity. Though they were initially viewed as pathological and unphysical solutions, they were later understood to be a solid and generic outcome of the theory. They are objects where the distortion of space and time is so extreme that it defies imagination. Black holes give rise to paradoxes whose resolution requires us to modify our conception of spacetime. We will review how black holes went from being an apparently unphysical solutions to a central tool for discovering new perspectives on the nature of spacetime.

    Maldacena talking to regular scholars about the basis of quantum mechanics and general relativity is like a parent teaching how to add or divide to his kid. This is so simple for him that he adds pictures and animation like a high school power point presentation.
    He is just in another level of brightness

    I believe one of the biggest indicators of intellect is the ability to explain complex things simply. Dr. Maldacena is of of the select few on the planet (even in history) that has this ability. He doesn't talk above people and doesn't get abstract to avoid tough questions. He's one of the brightest minds today and I feel lucky and grateful to be able to view videos like this.

    Idk how the guy in the beginning can both not speak coherently AND also speak for infinitely long whilst not saying much at all. You could condense his intro to a paragraph and it'd be articulate than those several minutes. And you can't say he doesn't know the language, he sounds as if he were educated in England. Good God, thankfully, Juan is my favorite physicist. Humble, genius, pious.

    The singularity and black holes, Since some black hole grow with matter, what is the relationship of size to weight, next step, what size would a black hole be if it contained all the mass from 100 galaxies the size of ours? go up by 100 times the mass then what will the dia be? Is further compression expected?

    Maldacena conjectured that the whole universe is a QC function, based on Hawking's wave function evolving into the unitary universe. I believe he will be the first to prove CQ functions to be error correcting system, explaining how elements to molecules to organic molecules... lead to life and consciousness.

    To form a BH a massive star should be shrinking as to reach the radius when light can no longer escape, but what about its increasing rotation? Is there a chance that rotational centrifugal force balances the increasing shrinking and thus can avoid to form a BH?

    If we are in space, what is space in ? I think space is in a topological black hole and that the big crunch is the fate of the universe and will close off as a black hole.

    if you enter the horizon surely you enter feet first or head first any way parts of your body enters before other parts. since there is no way information to go out from behind the horizon then when you cross say feet first there is a moment when you experience 'loosing your leg' as you do not feel them because they are behind the horizon but your head is not yet. ok this time is short but real. so in theory you will know that you crossed the horizon.

    Question: if Juan speaks of strongly interacting systems on the boundary of a black hole losing "long-distance correlations" as a function of the area of the black hole, and we know that the area of a black hole is proportional to the information contained within it, then is this concept just an association between the entropy of the "internal" AdS space and the entropy of the quantum system associated with it's boundary? In simplier terms, more information in the black hole means a higher black hole entropy and thus a more disordered quantum system on it's border?

    If black holes attract all matter into a singularity: what becomes of all that material. If material can’t be destroyed only transformed, what is the material in the singularity transformed into? If energy; what kind of energy produces Attraction of material into that singularity?

    Mister Maldacena is an amazing physicist, and his life-story is just as amazing as his brilliant mind. Brave man.
    My speculation: "Black Hole" should be re-named to "Extremely-Dark-Sphere" or just "Dark Sphere" to be more accurate. Black Holes - spherical areas in space where the mass of an object falling into the horizon is infinity and the object's clock stands still don't exist because no object can have infinite mass. Dark Spheres have no inside. They only have a surface. The concept of Spacetime has no meaning inside Dark Spheres. There is no singularity. All mass, energy, momentum, space, entropy, information, etc. are on the Dark Sphere's horizon.
    Another idea: Every formula in physics should be amended by adding an i to the independent side of the formula. The i represents all "i"nformation not captured by the rest of the independent side of the formula. i is a combo of everything - geometry, mass, energy, momentum, information, etc. I think the i is already called a "perturbation" in some branches of physics.
    Last one: Every formula has meaning if we reverse the dependent variables to independent and vice-versa. MC^2 = E is as true as E = MC^2. E = MC^2 teaches us that mass and motion create energy. MC^2 = E teaches us that energy creates mass and motion.
    I have no idea what I'm talking about. But I'm having fun!

    I don't see how a black hole could be made in a particle accelerator since the energy of the smallest possible black hole is around 10^9 J and accelerators can reach only about 10^-6 J.

    I hear a lot of commentary around the event horizon that an observer free falling wouldn't feel anything special crossing it. However, if I can feel around 10g on the surface of the Earth, I sure as heck would feel a force approaching infinity crossing an event horizon. I'm not convinced you can even cross one and fall inside.

      In the case of "not feeling" anything different is only when falling straight towards a non rotating supermassive blackhole where the event horizon would be a huge distance away from the singularity at the center. This is how some people come to the conclusion in their own minds that "spaghettification" would not take place until you have continued to fall farther into the interior.
      The problem is the people that think this way only do the thought experiment in their minds and do not do the math. When you do the math...in order to not feel anything different you would have had to be free falling towards the black hole (you would not feel the acceleration) but as you cross the event horizon your velocity would have to be close to the speed of light just before entering and the speed of light after you cross. People like to point out the flaw in that is that you are matter and matter can't reach the speed of light.
      However, matter that reaches the speed of light is now 100 percent Energy and is no longer considered matter. The time experienced by something traveling at the speed of light is zero. So the math says that from the perspective of someone falling into a blackhole they would cross the event horizon and hit the singularity instantly after that (from their frame of reference) even if the blackhole is a light year across from the outside. What even the smartest people always seem to forget is that the only thing allowed on the interior of a black hole is compactification of every frame of reference and convergence of any two vectors. So you are right not to be convinced.

      Much of the information about black holes is mathematical or theoretical and as far as I can tell it seems common enough for people to talk about going through a black hole event horizon or what it is like inside a black hole, but that doesn't make sense to me. It would seem that if a black hole is a super dense object left over from a star collapse you could never go inside there is no inside it's not hollow or full of chocolate syrup it is solid like a rock. It is so massive and compressed it is probably a perfect sphere and absolutely smooth. As you are drawn in closer by its be super strong gravity, you are broken up and heated smaller and smaller on to the atomic and subatomic scales and dissipated through the ecretion disk and high speed jets.

      That's right, there is a possibility that you can not fall INTO a black hole at all but shred apart before that. They use examples of no rotating black holes in these examples but there is no proof for different classes

    A massive particle will disintegrated before it reaches the horizon... But we are always talking about when we cross the horizn and do not feel anything... The geomtry of spacetime changes continually, the horizon may not support massive particles... inside the horizon only massless particles are supported. ?? some fantasy... it is a nice talk..

    Let me help you a little bit(well you will have to watch Warner's Interstellar, this Warner time traveller Con! )
    The difference between a black hole and a wormhole is that black holes are FULL of Information , which means time though almost stops, and space vibrates to almost an infinite speed, in an extremely cold conditions with no exchange of energy...wormholes , however contain NO INFORMATION, space stops vibrating, Sakinah😊you see? That is why Light erases memory.
    I call that The Queen passage: Imagine the dark bowing, leaving a passage, giving allegiance to light.😊It is a salute of allegiance, and wormholes happen when light and dark work together, they know the meeting "place": the dark creates the passage, and light naturally flows, no huge distances, just a point, in Sakinah😊

    Time is not stopping because time is a different thing made by human perspective we measure how time stops by looking atoms and movements of partical under gravity
    Because there is a huge non contact external force to the matter
    There is a realitionship between the electrons spining and gravity force
    Because gravity force Doesnt let any object to move any direction craking them with huge force what i understand about einsteins teory gravity force and sub atomic forces

    Every planet has an escape velocity associated with it ,depending on its mass. Molecules of gases move around at specific velocities. The mass of Earth is such that not much oxygen and nitrogen cannot escape. On Mars, they can. Black holes are so massive and their escape velocities are so high that not even photons travelling at the speed of light can escape. The centre of a black hole is collapsed matter. They are super- neutron stars.
    ` Is it possible that the Hawking radiation they emit ends up as hydrogen?

      @@MrGodofcar Yes it is, but it's speed is still finite and the gravity exerted by an extremely dense and massive collapsed star may have an escape velocity higher than that. i.e a black hole.

    A constant speed of light is actually obvious to anyone who understands the Quantum Chemistry, period doubling, cause-effect resonance of the QM-Time modulation wave-package, but the logic of the Quantum Operator obscures the timing-spacing, like one-way mirrors, that appears to create this brane-boundary image within-without the wave-package.
