Such a sad story I feel many of us can relate to. We can never quite measure up to the expectations of the ones who love us. It makes me think introspectively and always brings a tear to my eyes, especially in light of what happened to singer Brad Delp (June 12, 1951 - March 9, 2007) later at the end of his life. RIP
So sad. It's truly heartbreaking. Such a waste. I understand how it happens, but it's still such a waste of a life
So true, so true.
Holy Sh1t! What BJ said made me think Brad was talking to his inner self who was so sad and ashamed that he couldn't live up to his own expectations. He did suffer depression that eventually led to his suicide.
This song is so heartbreaking. Brad Delp so underrated. Going through my divorce, I played this song often. I tried to end it and God saved me...
Well Said…
Asia & BJ, you'll love their "Peace Of Mind"!!!! Brad Delp had one of the greatest voices in rock!!!
More Than A Feeling and Don't Look Back too. Hell, anything by them.
If you like their Records , they were just as good Live! Truly an awesome Memory from my Teenage years in High School.🎸🎶✌🏽🤙🏽👍🏽😎
Finally!!! Love this hidden gem so much. Definitely Tom’s best solo
This song hits marrow deep. The voice and guitar just sends the vibes deep.
@@jasonjones2176 the harmonies in the chorus are breathtaking
Best Guitar Ever!!!
One of Boston’s finest songs ❤️
Angelic voice of Brad Delp. RIP. Nicest man in Rock & Roll.
Boston has so many great songs, but this one is vastly underrated. One of their very best, IMO. Brad Delp's vocals are incomparable.
@@yeahright302 It's underrated in the sense that when people mention songs by Boston it's typically not one of the first half dozen or so that come up.
Great song from a great band! Brad Delp is the singer just so you know! Powerful song off a great album, their second! Definitely in my top five bands of all time! Thank you for reacting to them!
One of the best concerts I've ever been to out of the many..:) This brought back so many excellent memories from back when the music truly was real and you knew it was them singing as they had pure talent and needed no help like most groups of today...:) Thanks for choosing this little played gem...:)
I remember going to see Heart on their Dog And The Butterfly tour. We were all standing around in line and looking at the promo board about the show. Their warm up band was so new that they hadn't even released an album. We were all asking each other "Who the hell is Boston?" Needless to say, we found out and were hooked from there on. Such a sad ending for Brad. I hope he finally found his peace
Real music!!
Thank you for your great reaction to one of Boston's greatest songs, which doesn't get the recognition it deserves. 👍
This song really does speak to a man's drive to be the person that his woman wants, but sometimes in the end her expectations are more than he can deliver, no matter how hard he tries. He may love her enough to take a bullet for her but if he cannot be what she wants then he has to move on so she might find the person she really needs. Boston is always about the deeper meaning of things . . . . of course they do have just all out rockers like Party or Smokin'. . . . You really need to keep going on their catalog . . . . jump ahead and listen to The Walk On Medley but do the flawless cut! It will blow your minds!
It was written for the guitarist dad he was afraid he could not live up to his father's hopes and dreams for him
I was in 5th grade and had this Boston 8 track tape and I loved this song, still do. I think Brad Delp was underrated because , man what a voice❤
A real sad, but beautiful song. I wonder if these lyrics were reflective of what Brad Delp felt throughout his life about himself. Suicide ended his life. He had such success and acclaim, yet sadly couldn't keep it together. He was a great, decent guy with incredible talent. Man, how I loved Boston !
Such a beautiful song to react to. Brad had such a beautiful voice. He could hit those high notes with such ease. Always gives me chills. Yeo, Asia you got it right saying Boston Never Fails. I love how the both of you are so young and yet you love all music from all genres and all ages. You have such appreciation for it all and you get the messages behind the songs too. Love you guys so much... Asia, take care of that cough Mamma,,, we all care about you🥰🥰💕💕🥰🥰
When Tom Scholz created the Boston guitar tone, he hit it out of the damn park. You just cannot recreate that sound without using the stuff he designed. Even with 1000s of dollars of guitars , amps and effects.....it wasn't until I bought the tiny little Scholz "Rockman" that I was able to get there.
It took an MIT engineer to invent that thing. And I agree, he absolutely hit a home run with that sound.
Believe it or not, Scholz invented nearly all of his own equipment because he couldn't buy equipment for the sound he wanted.
@@BillyMerryman He even blew off a transistor for a specific sound!
Yeah, I love that guitar tone. But, you don't need the Rockman to create the Boston sound. "Don't Look Back" came out in 1978. The Rockman was 1st released in 1982. The X100 series came out in 1984. So, Tom Scholz at first was able to create the Boston sound without the Rockman amp.
@@samkeepintherockalive I'm guessing the Rockman was a more economically friendly option than what they used to record the album.😉
This is a very relatable song to anyone. And the lead vocals and harmonies together with the musicianship is perfect.
P.S. CONGRATS ON 250k ...
This song is everything that a Rock power ballad should be: flawless & powerful vocals, melodic shredding guitar, some soft piano riffs, and a great arrangement. It's always been my favorite track on the "Don't Look Back" album. Other songs from that album I recommend are "Don't Look Back" (the title track), and "Feelin' Satisfied".
I've been married twice, my first husband expected me to become something that I was never gonna be so, we made it to 9 years and it was a HARD 9 years. It's all about not seeing the person for who they really but who you want them to be, it only leads to heartache. This song always takes me back to that time, I still love this song though. Brad Delp was such a gifted singer (R.I.P) . Thanks for this reaction.
According to Tom Scholz, the lyrics for "A Man I'll Never Be" came to him quickly after he completed the music. Brad Delp sang the lead and backing vocals and Scholz played lead and rhythm guitar, organ and piano. The only other musician on the recording was drummer Sib Hashian. The song was mostly recorded at Scholz's Hideaway Studio, although the piano part was recorded by engineer Dave Butler at Northern Studio in Maynard, Massachusetts, allegedly because Hideaway was too small to fit the piano.

Boston’s first LP remains one of the best debut albums of all time. Saw their first two tours and they were so spot on, it sounded like it was coming of the albums themselves. This one’s a personal favorite. Love the channel guys. 👈😉
Goes straight to the heart of any man with just a bit of self-doubt. Deep song.
One of my favorites from this band but rarely played anymore!
Rarely played ever... at least over the air. So many DJs got hung up on their big hits without actually exploring the full album (which I feel is one of the cardinal sins of music)
@@TonyM1961 Every Classic Rock station should play this song. A Masterpiece. Goosebumps all over.
Beautiful heart felt lyrics and melody
nice smooth one, great guitar parts,🎸🎤🎸
Hidden Gem 💎 for sure … Brings back lots of great memories and good times in the late 70’s ..
“Peace of mind” off of the first album is my favorite Boston song .. I have my Don’t Look Back album signed by Brad Delp on the front cover . Prized possession for sure ..
My second favorite song from Boston. Of course my favorite is More than a feeling. Which is also my all time favorite song from anyone. Love Boston!!
This is a song as a man I have always loved, although it has a sadness to it. Watching you both, this was a different reaction. Both thoughtful and insightful and I like how BJ represented all mandom being our representative and voice. Kudos 👌👍😊
Thank you! - Again ^^ And one of your finest reacts (Boston songs never fail, as you said :)))))
Awesome
When Boston touched down with their second Lp, "Don't Look Back" in 1978, much was made by earthbound rock writers of the two years that had elapsed in-between the band's wildly successful first musical visitation and this new dawn arrivin'.
In any case, "Don't Look Back" turned out to be- by any fair standard- well worth the wait. If some folks at the time were ever so slightly disappointed , it may have been simply because it turns out that you really can't lose your virginity twice.
In truth, Scholz's approach has always been a time-consuming and surprisingly homespun one. "Because of the way I worked, I never really left the basement," he explains. "When I moved I built a new studio in a new basement, and I've never ended up recording in any recording studio for all the Boston albums. We were the one multi-million-selling basement band that never left the basement". "A Man I'll Never Be" is a true gem. Is proof of what a fine album "Don't Look Back" really is. A classic!👍👍🎸🎸
Boston is my favorite band, and this is the most underrated song they have. Great job!
R.I.P. Brad Delp....this song hits you in the face.
This is hands down the most underrated rock song of all time.
It's the deepest compliment that a man can give to a woman! I wish that good vibes is spreading to every heart that listened to this great song! There's a story, behind this song?
I can relate to the message in this song from being with a woman who really was trying to turn me into someone I'm not. And I know that's a common thing that happens.
I saw them 3 times. Best show and music ever right out of the mid 70s !!!!😊
My favorite Boston song, and that is saying a lot with all of the great music they created.😍
I found the band Boston as teenager and loved everything I heard from them. I only wish they'd done more albums/ music cause i think they could have been one of the biggest bands in history like Aerosmith is thought of. I love their sound and vocals more than most I hear today. Great reaction. Love you guy and you're always in my prayers ❤️
I can't help thinking of Brad's tragic suicide when I hear this song. So sad, but such a wonderful legacy that's still touching new listeners like yourselves
Great song!
Hardly anyone reacts to this so good on ya guys
RIP Brad Delp and thank you for the music.
There is a live version out there that will blow you away. Brad's singing was awesome. RIP
You hit it on the head! Thank you for the great insights on this song!
This song is fuckin genius. Brings me to tears every time.
It makes me realize that I have to try harder, but I expect the same from my love! Reciprocation is the best part of love, life!
One of my favs ❤️🎸❤️
One of the most EPIC albums ever made!! ANYTHING by Boston is fire!!
Spot on guys. What a great song. Sad but great.
I saw Boston in 79 at giants stadium .and i must admit when brad Delp sang heads turned .he was that good live. to me IMHO this is the bast rock ballad.
Really good band and most of their songs relate to any era
I think this is Boston's greatest song and they got a lot them. I have a thing for slow jams and a slow jam with guitars make it even better. Excellent song.
Hands down, Boston's finest moment right there...I remember suggesting this (and that you find a version with lyrics on it) on one of your earlier Boston songs and I'm so glad you did it. BJ hit the nail on the head on what it's about. Wish more reactors would discover this masterpiece of a song! Thanks for doing it!
BJ, you never fail to come through with your remarkable insight, particularly to the songs of Boston. Well done my good man. Thank you, thank you both.
What can you say about Tom Scholz's guitar writing, ingenious. He went to MIT, worked in tech, created devices to duplicate or "chorus" the sound. "the guitar signal is duplicated and the pitch changes slightly. In addition, the signal is often also slightly delayed and then mixed back into the original guitar signal. This makes it sound as if several guitars are being played simultaneously and a wider, thicker and richer sound is created." He was in his mid 20's when he wrote his early stuff, alone in his basement, age 25 or so. the great brad delp was brought in later. this song was written when he was about 30.
i just realized after 45 years of listening that the piano ending to this is very much akin to the end of bohemian rhapsody.
and that my friends, is how you rock n roll.. it will never get old ❤️
U guys reacted to this so beautifully. ❤
Boston great group! Always loved this song !! ❤❤
Excellent observation Asia.
Boston was so damn good live! Miss the good old days!
CONGRATS ON 250k 🥂💥💥Great reaction!!
One of my favorite songs from Boston!
Thank you for this, guys.
Get well soon Asia
BJ! Looking really dapper this evening.
The bass in this song was absolutely shredding.
Top tier rock ballad. Brad Delp harmonizing with Brad Delp... *Chef's Kiss* Do their "Amanda" if you haven't already
I love the way you guys bring these songs down to earth.. such a cool perspective. I also love the broad spectrum of songs you play on here. I am subscribing for sure! Keep up the great work!!
I love Brad Delp” the man with the golden voice”
Brad Delp struggled with depression before he finally ended his life. This song brings a tear to my eye, because it symbolizes the expectations of society, as opposed to what this particular man is capable of. He's tried, but he can't try any longer....
When I hear this song. It reminds me of the puppy loves I had in the late 70’s. I was very young, but you want to find your forever guy. The ones I picked fit this song to a t. They could never be the man I wanted because we were on a different page in our lives. They partied, I didn’t. I believe this is what Boston meant. Not necessarily the partying, just a different stage in their life. They also traveled and that’s hard on a relationship.
When the next guy came along it was hard to trust him. He was very different than the others. He put me first and I did the same for him. We married in high school and we were married over 40 years before he passed away at 57. He did everything for his family💔💝
40 years ago i gave up the one person i loved because i felt i needed to be more and she deserved better. Something that still haunts me.
But boston is still my favorite band.
Been done, there that.
Classic Boston sound for sure.
I remember being a teenager when this came out and thinking the same thing and figured out do the best you can as a human and 55yr old fan ❤🤙🙃
Very relatable song I think for anyone. I went through a few divorces and and I definitely get it.
This is on the first album that I bought as a 12-year-old kid, and now you wouldn't need to have explained how Tom Scholz became my first rock guitar hero. It's for a number of reasons that I consider this to be nothing less than the very best thing that they did, and they set a pretty high bar for themselves.
Beautiful lid my friend. That Olde English "D" is classic!
I always thought it was a romantic son….but then I started to see it thru the eyes of a mother. Did he grow up to be what you wanted? Great song! Well done ! Much love
Love this song! Always have.
Great job BJ and Asia!
💕💕
You have to think of this from the perspective of a father who knows his child sees him in an idealized light. He’s perfect in every way and can do no wrong. But the father knows that just isn’t quite so, no matter how hard he tries to be that man and no matter how much he wishes he was. Much love ❤️
We miss you Brad, RIP .
Excellent commentary from y’all on this
Great Song!
Epic song!!!!
Tom Scholz the guitar player is an engeneer he Built all the amps to make that special Boston sound and he wrote most if not all of the songs for Boston
Yeah sometimes I look at successful people and think how come I don’t climb to the heights of success ❤
Y’all have no idea what this song is about. This song is a cry for help. It is literally a cry for help. This man took his own life because he was flawed like all of us. He was a man he could never be. I’ve listened to this song since i had the record as a kid in the 70s. It’s only know I realize what it really means. I cannot listen to it without crying. This is pure emotion. This song is a suicide letter :(
30 years before the fact🤔? Uh - don’t think so.
You know Tom wrote that right?
One of my favorites. Glad you love it too.
B.J. Asia can u guys believe these guys are not in the rock and roll hall. Unbelievable. Plz use this platform to tell people to help get them in. Bradley would have been so happy.
the live versions even better
I always considered it to apply specifically to a famous rock singer idolized by so many faced with expectations in his personal relationship.
and now you MUST react to it's cousin song "To be a Man" off of Third Stage - Boston is timeless !!
Love this song! Boston's finest effort in my humble opinion. Most look at the lyrics as ...he's trying to measure up. I look at the meaning slightly different. To me the song says: That he can't bring himself to love her as deeply as she loves him, no matter how he tries. Lines like "If only I could find a way... I'd feel like I'm the man you believe I am" ...and "It gets harder every day for me, to hide behind this dream you see. A man I'll never be." Sounds like he strives to be that love she's dreams of, but he's just not feeling it. Later he changes that last line to "I can't keep hiding this feeling". The opening line could be interpreted in this same manner too. "If I said what's on my mind, you'd turn and walk away ...It's so hard to be unkind, so easy just to say ...that everything is just the way it seems" < As in: It's easier to pretend all is okay because he can't bring himself to hurt her. Even the line "You look up at me, somewhere in your mind you see, a man I'll never be" My take is: She looks up to him but he knows she's wise enough to eventually catch on and see his true hidden feelings. He can't get any stronger or any higher ...he's really tried. Truth being you can try & try, but can't force yourself to love someone based on they deserve it. I think he's saying he wishes he could be that guy, but he just can't. I love Boston and mean no offense to them or any fans. It's just my take on the words and I definitely could be wrong.
👍👍another great reaction.
Welcome to 4 decades ago. It's refreshing to see today's people like yourself learning what us ol rockers have known for almost 1/2 a century
The unmistakable sound of Boston, hearing Tom play the first notes of any of their songs you know whats coming. They were fantastic.
KEEP THE BOSTON COMING YALL
Go Tigers BJ! Asia...beautiful!!
i love you guys.
this song & Amanda (from the same LP ) are my favorite Boston tunes!! from the first time i heard this one it made me peel my own onion & look within myself & helped me be a better partner-friend- companion-spouse but like the song says it's sometimes the shortcomings we impose upon ourselves in our relationships that cause the most difficulty! thank you for listening & reacting to this one you guys are awesome & such fun to watch!! much love & God Bless!!
This song was sung from a son or daughter to a parent whose expectations they just could not meet
Rip brad delp what an icon
