Brad Delp suffered with depression for many years....and if you listen carefully to some of his songs, you will hear that in his music. This song , "Used to Bad News" & "Can'tcha Say You Believe In Me" all have undertones of depression...of feeling unworthy of being loved and expecting the worst. As someone who struggled with depression in my 30's, I turned to alcohol to ease the pain that I was in all the time. I had relationships that never seemed to workout and like this song talks about, I thought that no matter what I did...it was never enough...and I would never be worthy of being loved. Until I met my wife of 21 years now...finally...did I feel acceptance and love....and I stopped drinking. Depression can attach itself to anyone....so be accepting and loving towards everyone you know... because you don't know what they are hiding deep inside.
Agreed. Men are afraid to tell the women in their lives that they can't live up to their high expectations, for fear of losing them to someone else. And the cycle continues...
@@clatoris69 Those types are not worth the effort. A man..or a woman..needs to be theirself. If that isn't acceptable to others, then walk away from them.
He's not trying to portray himself as anything. It's her that sees something in him that he doesn't see in himself and he is trying to live up to those expectations but doesn't think he can. Maybe ironically because he sees this and is actually trying maybe he is the man she sees and he just doesn't realize it ?
I believe that you heard exactly what this song was really about. You nailed it perfectly!! I'm glad that you heard exactly what I heard about what this man is trying to say to his love. There was nothing in this song about this man trying to decieve the woman that he loved, he was just hoping that his woman would see him the way that he really was is all. Thanks for breaking down exactly what this great song was about!! 🙂
This is one of their best songs that hardly ever gets heard, so really happy to see you are the very first ever to do a reaction to it that I'm aware of. Well done for picking such an amazing song!
Agreed, came out when Boston wasn't fresh anymore and in that era so many great bands were producing hits., but I don't know of another song that expresses an Upstairs/Downstairs relationship than this one
He's saying the woman he's singing to sees him on a pedestal. A vision of a man he can't possibly be and he's trying so hard to meet her expectations because he loves her and wants to be with her, but it gets harder and harder to do. That's what he meant by "And it gets harder everyday for me, to hide behind this dream YOU see, a man i'll never be." This song has always touched me, even as a kid, but I actually lived through something similar and when I did, it became painfully more relevant.
Well I think that way the song was originally written was about a man who had someone in his life who saw him in a way that he wasn't. He wasn't trying to portray himself that way but she had him on a pedestal and he was trying to live up to that but it just was getting to be too much. On the other hand I think Brad Delp who is or was the lead singer of the band Boston has an incredible voice, he portrays emotion just so well and I think this was his way of crying out. He suffered from depression all of his life or at least all over his adult life but I think all of his life and he did end up committing suicide in March of 2007. The note he left behind said something to the effect that he was a very lonely soul. It breaks my heart to know that and I love this song from the very first time I heard it when I was in college which was way way before he committed suicide. This has always been one of my all time favorite songs and is completely underrated and I truly do think that he was trying to tell the world something but he kept trying he kept trying to hang on and he just couldn't do it anymore. He afixated himself by making a contraption in the bathroom of his home. So incredibly sad and he is terribly missed because he was extremely talented and from what everyone has said that he was the nicest nicest guy but obviously in a lot of emotional pain.😪 Thank you for reacting to this India.
This is such an amazing song. Kind of sad that it doesn't get nearly as much love as their other great songs like "More Than A Feeling" and "Foreplay/Long Time". RIP Brad Delp!
What kind of idiot 'dislikes' this beautiful song? It is a masterpiece of musical perfection and harmony, one of the band's best songs - just lovely !!!
Yours is such an interesting interpretation...as a male i always took it as him feeling unworthy of the love and adulation she felt towards him, with his intense feelings for her compounding his fears...he didnt want to fail her. One of my favorites since i was in jr high and the album came out. ✌
I think she looks at him with such admiration and love and he feels he doesn't deserve it. He wants to be so much for her, but doesn't feel he can be better or what she deserves. Love this song and will always love Boston.
Wow, is this Boston's most powerful and meaningful song? How many men (and women) can relate to being in a relationship with someone who has expectations you can't live up to, but you don't want to let go at the same time. "Cry a little longer and hold a little tighter". He's really trying here.
Rip Brad Delp. It seemed to be he had no self worth. When in reality he was probably the nicest person to ever walk the earth. He was multitalented. He had one of the greatest voices ever I'm still upset he isn't in the rock-and-roll Hall of fame.
This song just drips with bitter emotion. The guitars sound like a four string quartet, each note so purposeful , poised and planned. The pain is reflected in both instrument and voice behind lyrics that tell the story, followed by a guitar solo that loses it's melancholy composure , breaking down into a frantic crying. The song gathers it's broken heart, softly saying goodbye Tom is a musical/mathematical genius, putting emotion and math together as only brilliant savant can.
My take on it is that she sees more in him than he sees in himself. Brad Delp committed suicide in part because he had higher expectations of himself than he felt he was achieving, including in his personal life. So much real, raw emotion in his voice. The music just adds to the powerful emotions to this song. I cry everytime I listen to it.
This is every man you've ever known. This is me and my wife of 40 years, been through everything together, 3 kids, grandkids, cars, houses, sex, arguments, everything, both good and bad. No matter how hard I try, no matter what I provide, it is never what I think she deserves, she is my world. And why I always reach and strive for more, because she deserves it. If I can make it happen to elevate her world, will put in the work. But I will never feel I've done enough, worked hard enough, pushed enough. I know when I've slacked off, stepped back, took it easy, and it weighs on me. And every man out there knows that same feeling, we are the providers, and we carry that guilt. That is what this song is about.

I've always thought the song to be about a man who is trying to live up to the image the woman has built up of him. He knows he will never be the man she thinks he is. He will give it his all, but ultimately he knows he will fail. Delp sings the hell out of this with emotion and feeling. You feel this man's plight. It is Boston's best ballad EVER!

It's as simple as this, his girl wants him to be something that he's not. He trys, but he knows that he'll never change who he is....Lord knows I can't change ....
This was the singers cry for help. Bradley Delp was deeply in love with a woman that fame kept him away from. He could not bring himself to destroy BOSTON by quitting and could not bear being away from her. It got so bad that after this album he went into a deep depression because it cost him his true love. She moved on and he killed himself. All the money and fame was worth nothing compared to the loss of his true love. So the next time someone wants fame, just remember it will cost you alot! If money and fame is all you want then go for it. For Bradley it was an unexpected fame that tore his life apart. There is no disaster like success when your not ready for it!!!
My take has always been that she has a certain view of him and he just doesn't think he can live up to that. This of course saddens him no end and this is his way of trying to explain those feelings. He's doing everything he can but he doesn't think it will ever be enough, he wants to be that man but just doesn't see it happening.

One of the best songs 'er written and could ner' be sung by anyone originally, ever. With a differing perception..Where' it be a Man or even a Woman..the other Partner may idolize them soo much, soo, soo very much they feel overwhelmed if at times unworthy and find it hard to keep shining in their eyes...
No I don't agree, I think that he feels 'she' has a image of a 'Knight in shining white armour' of the type of guy she wants, and he knows he is never going to pull that roll off forever. He struggling at the moment, but he can't keep it up. Her expectations are too high.
A song about a man pretending to be someone he is not to impress a woman and not being true to himself. Happens a lot in relationships because people aren’t comfortable with who they are.
There are certain songs chosen by destiny to match artist, song, and time to create an eternal ballad. Freddie Mercury, Queen, and Bohemian Rhapsody is one example. "A Man I'll Never Be" will forever be Brad's song, and given his tragic end, this will always be linked together with him, Boston, and the eternal struggle for men to live up to what they know their partner would like them to be. Genius? Yes, but more than that, it hits at the center of who we men are.

She has him on a pedestal that he doesn't feel he is deserving to be there..
He's a rock star. Something maybe he feels he can't live up to.
It’s their best song..
If I was trapped on an island.. it’s the only song needed..
A song that literally gets better every time I hear it, easily top five rock ballads of all time!
No I don't agree, I think that he feels 'she' has a image of a 'Knight in shining white armour' of the type of guy she wants, and he knows he is never going to pull that roll off forever. He struggling at the moment, but he can't keep it up. Her expectations are too high.
No dear... He sees himself as unworthy.... She sees him a hanging the moon and stars.... And he feels he can never be the man that her minds sees
This song was sung to his mother whose expectations he could never meet
Boston - COOL THE ENGINES!!!!!
In my top 5 bands ever, so many good songs.
One of my ALL TIME FAVORITE SONGS!
She has him on a pedestal and he can't be that idol.
A song about a man pretending to be someone he is not to impress a woman and not being true to himself. Happens a lot in relationships because people aren’t comfortable with who they are.
Just a great song from a frickin great band.yep.your reviews are refreshing.
