    Will go down as one of the best sports rivalries in history. The passion from both sides, the importance for the Wings to win in 1997 after losing to them in 1996. The AVs were basically the crappy Quebec Nordiques turned into a major hockey powerhouse in the 90s and early 2000s (and now they are back as favorites to win the Cup in 2022)...and the Wings being this historic, storied franchise that had risen from the dead...only to be stunted in 94, 95 and 96...left in near desperation in 97. Fabulous display of intense hockey, full of skill and grit. If you lived through it...you know how important it was. As a Wings fan...the memories are everlasting.

    It’s crazy...way back when he joined Detroit, it was clear Lidstrom was a good player, and Paul Coffey was there to show him the offensive game.
    I think about all the other legends that Nick has played defence with...Coffey, Chelios, Fetisov, Duchesne, Konstantinov, Rafalski, Schneider etc and Lidstrom is levels above all of them.
    It’s blasphemous to think of anyone other than Howe of Yzerman as all time greatest Redwing, but Lidstrom belongs in that untouchable group.

    Met Nick Lindstrom at the Icebox in Brownstown, Michigan one winter. My team was waiting for our game and a rumor started to buzz through the whole arena that Lindstrom was there. This was 2010/2011 so he was still playing, and our coach evidently walked right up to him and introduced his team to Nick, Tomas Holmstrom (who had a broken arm) and a guy I couldn’t recognize. He spoke to us about our game for a few mins, signed a couple autographs ( I had a red wings starter jacket at the time and it’s now one of my most prized possessions ) but said when the game started we needed to leave bc he was there to watch his nephew. Incredibly polite, he didn’t have to talk to us but he did, and didn’t wanna a miss a second of his nephew play. Hall of fame player and person

    I have a classic story to tell. We were Avs season ticket holders back in the day, I had two kids son 8 years old and daughter 6 years old. we hated the Wings. 96-97 season when the rivalry was red hot, Avs hosting the Wings with more than a few RedWing fans sitting in our section that night there was plenty of trash talking haha Wings score a goal, a Wings fan was a little out of control, she started yelling and pushing people as part of her celebration. The ushers started to escort her out as we were all taunting her, at the bottom of the stairs before she goes through the tunnel she turns to the crowd flips us off, instantly dozens of beers, sodas and popcorn rained down on her. My daughter yells out "fuck her up" out of the blue, half the people cheered half looked at me as if I were Satin. I said, what it is only a word, the context is what matters and I am okay with it. haha She eventually played her hockey in the ECAC Division I, and played in the Frozen Four. Now as we look back and reminisce, she said the intensity of those games and excitement ignited her passion for hockey. I guess I need to thank the Redwings for her full ride scholarship hahaha She also talks about how lame the sport as become with the lack of raw emotion from the players today. Hockey was a sport of courage/honor, now it is the "face of the franchise" sport. BORING

    • @boreopithecus
      @boreopithecus Před rokem

      I’m Swedish too. You shouldn’t be amazed. Swedish is very similar to English. They may seem very different on first glance but most of the differences are systematic so a lot of it is just about learning patterns. Pretty quickly you get a feel for it and you can sort of guess the meaning of many English words, a lot of the time you can even guess what the English word will be even before looking it up. Most of the irregular nouns and verbs are the same, the grammar is basically the same, etc, etc. So you get maybe 50% of the language for free right off the bat. If you then consider that English is taught as one of the core subjects in school (only math and Swedish are considered as important as English) to all kids from early elementary school, plus the fact that the culture is absolutely inundated with English (90% of songs and movies are in English; nothing is dubbed) it’s really not surprising that most people learn pretty good English, it’s almost a bilingual society (almost but not quite). If you then on top of that go and live in an English-speaking country for 20 years like Lidström did, then if you sound almost like a native after a few years well that’s really nothing special, it’s normal.
      On the flip side, if you aren’t comfortable with English you can’t even go to college since most of the textbooks are in English. And traveling abroad will be almost impossible. You have no choice, you have to get good at it.
