- May 27, 1996 - [Complete] - Dave Matthews performs "Crash Into Me" & "All Along The Watchtower" in studio during the Pinkpop Festival Megaland Landgraaf.
This took place during a sit down w/ a radio DJ after DMB played very early in the day (prior to TV crews setting up to film clips).
PAL-DV master capture shared w/ me by J.Nilsson - His live music channel (non-DMB content) is over here: / rollingrockvideos - Hudba
The 90's really did it culturally. The music, the movies, the internet. Everything kind of came together perfectly.
And then the last 30 years happened....
Last Great Decade.
Nostalgia have probably blinded y’all. Every decade has gone through their own shitshow of problems
Sorry the internet is the worst thing ever. When the 90s ended so did humanity
25 years later and we're all arguing about ideal(s) that we all saw eye to eye on just because a few more people got retarded or gay or odd or whatever you wish to call it.
My left hand is cramping up just watching this
This and Samurai Cop are the apex carpel tunnel songs 😂😂
No doubt, it’s a bitch to play the entirety of the song…
Yes! I've been playing this for 20 years and i can't get through the end, so i skip the last verse. Glad I'm not the only one!
🤣😂a true musician

It’s so awesome to see someone doing exactly what they are meant to do.
Heard!
💯 man
*what a true complement!*
and doing it so well 💕
I was in college from 01-05. Dave was huge. I remember going to frat parties and cover bands jamming the fuck out of ant marching. It was a wonderful time to be alive in US
Those were some AWESOME years. Not much bullshit except Sept 11 but just before the real estate crash. Really solid times for fun without too much chaos in the world
Cheers guys
@@RandomRabbit007 yeah not alot of chaos besides the full scale war going on in the middle east and our troops being deployed. what the fuck kind of bullshit are you even saying?
@@RandomRabbit007 was going to say, sept 11 and the Iraq war colored a lot of that time for the worse unfortunately. Still better than now.
I was in college in the late 80's, early 90's. Played in a couple of bands. Had the privilege of opening alongside DMB in Athens at the Georgia Theatre. I think Blues Traveler and Widespread Panic were the main acts that night. Talk about good times.
Even solo acoustic he is just transcendental.
Especially.
He is even better acoustic
This is an absolute GEM.
Before the Interweb...
Before social media...
Raw, uncut, a man and his guitar 🤟🏻🙏🏻👊🏻
It was an easier time …
I remember seeing the band in Georgetown Washington DC, early 90's. No cell phones either. Just pure band, and tape recorders.
Raw and uncut is crazy
1996 was an awesome time to be alive!
It’s like he almost leaves his body when he plays. Such a talent 🔥
Real talent. So authentic. He burst on the scene a long time ago and forged new ground; a rare thing indeed.
True original
Authentic is the exact word. And so damn talented...whew!
Billy Strings is my newest obsession...authentic like Dave and definitely forging new ground.
They remind me of each other 🙂
@@an5925 eh Billy Strings authentic ?? Try listening to Doc Watson, I think Billy is more a traditionalist as opposed to Dave Mathews , no one sounds like Dave Mathews, Billy to me sounds more like traditional blues grass or new grass is what they call it these days. Not saying he’s not good further from the truth, he’s gun blazing good and fun to watch perform he puts his all into the music
You said it. REAL talent…of which there is not much
it’s insane to me that his speaking voice is so different when he’s this young but his singing voice is exactly the same and his latest stuff
I love how he gets lost in the music and flat out kills it. Most musicians wont/cant, do it like that in person. Story telling, Believability, Vocals, Guitar... 🔥
You're reaching by saying "most" musicians. There are tons of vocalists I can list off the top of my head that are as good or way better than Dave Matthews live.
@King Keltic Yes Sir! That's why I also chose some words carefully "Most". There's thousands/millions of musicians. In that particular setting (closed, tight), you'll be hard pressed to find someone outside the majority of musicians with the melodic greatness that was done here. It's my opinion though. I do respect yours.
@@kingkeltic4228Truth. I honestly find nothing great about him at all.
There are many who could probably sing or play better than Dave Matthews, but to write a song like this, that’s all Dave.
How great were the freakin 90’s!? Remember blasting this in my college dorm in ‘96-‘97. Great tunes, great friends, great times
What an absolute beast of a performer… Always rock-solid.
YES
That stare from the host - bottle that and sell it to ward of Ghosts.
Well done Dave - lovely song.
The different way of looking at basic chords and finding unique substitutes is what gave his music such a unique originality along with his fascinating, intimate voice and lyrics. Glad we had people like him to enjoy growing up.
Idk if I would call these basic chords though they are a complete pain to play
@RadioactiveSince1990x Pretty basic IMO. Nothing difficult for me there (and I'm a good guitarist - but certainly not a great one).
@@RadioactiveSince1990x I'd say that Dave takes basic chords and changes them to create his own chords, which can be pretty painful to play.
Peak Dave Mathews, was fire. :) not many people can pull of what this man did :)
Copperpot- again with the coolest, rare Dave Matthews stuff. Thanks for the upload!
I first saw DM at the intermission of a blues traveler show in 1993. Nobody in the audience had ever heard of him a d at first everyone completely ignored him. Figured he was some random who john popper owed a favor to. By the end of his first song the entire audience was back in front of the stage and totally rapt. By the end of his third song the whole crowd was blown away. We were all wondering who is this guy and why have we never heard of him?
Flippen awesome story...
@@allstopblue5717 True - that doesn't mean these other artists aren't just as special. Music is personal. Some make it big by chance, by luck, by connections, by hard work, and skill. I think Dave got it by talent and hard work. Some don't care about making it big... It's just personal... I wouldt be surprised if Dave really cared much about success. I think he would of pressed on regardless...
Love this story! thanks for sharing 🙏🏻
@@danherrick5785 ...still need money to live, especially these days...🙉🙈🙊...
🌬💨☝🏼💜💨💨💨
Awesome. I didn’t see him until 1996. It was a crowd of about 5,000 outside in Santa Fe, Nm.
I can't with the radio host starring 🫣😂 Amazing how Dave could still escape to the world of emotion he portrayed as he played. 👌
I was getting amused by that as well 😅. Such a stare he has lol.
Holy hell. That was impressive. Who does this shit anymore?. Cannot believe how susceptible I am to nostalgia these days.
Mac DeMarco lol
I’m a metal head and seeing DMB play at SPAC in Upstate NY in the late 90s was the best show I’ve ever been to
Wtf did I just watch? That was amazing. That was the first time I watched Dave play on screen. Wow
Welcome
I LOVE me some 90's David Mathews - such a special time for music.........
Yes!!!
I agree. 90s were incredible for all genres. Pop, rock, metal, hip hop. They all involved real actual instruments being played. A far cry from todays garbage. All created on computers. No musicians needed. Just a Producer who doubles as a computer programmer…
Dave is a unique and talented writer/singer. Huge part of my life soundtrack. When you “get” his style,.. you can’t get enough. Thanks
His voice is the stuff of legends!
I'm being a bit emotional but this is one artist who always transports me back to 2011, when life was much simpler and very very beautiful. His music reminds me that I can get those good times again some day.
@@superfluousanxiety3651 in 2005, I was 5 :)
2005?? What song are you talking about?
@@superfluousanxiety3651 this song came out in 96
@@tdf087 90s were the best time for music
@@superfluousanxiety3651 Back to 2005? WTF🤣 This video even says this takes place in 1996! Derrrrrrrrr. I don't feel you bud
when I learned this on guitar, my lonely nights was all over...
What times these were. Brings a tear to my eye. Id give anything to go back. Make sure you take advantage of your young years people
How would we do that?
@@justinbourgeois4685 if your young, try to live with no regrets. I graduated 95 from high school, and I'd love to know then what I know now. Take chances. Don't be scared. And I mean that within the law
@@richlewis1879 thank you
Wow this is incredible. It's original, beautiful, quirky. I didn't appreciate him back in the day. But he was and is a genius.
As I'm watching this now, I was thinking the same thing to myself. I never disliked Dave Matthews, but I just couldn't get into him. But I believe we come to appreciate certain things after time and experience. As my love and appreciation for music continues to grow, so does my palette for all types of different artists. ✌🏾
i was born on this exact day
Me too! I was 5 this day
Dave matthews is all passion
His hand movement is insane, I love Dave..so talented and his voice alone is an instrument and it never goes out of tune
insane hand movement? I love Dave, but for this song hand is in the same position most of the song with the second finger changing the bass note
@@firelanderinoportarlino7437 did you watch the whole video? ❤😉
@@firelanderinoportarlino7437 as a guitarist of 25 years, this riff is very difficult. That's quite teh stretch to hold for bascially the entire song. Plus the timing is a bit odd on the strumming AND he's singing a completely different rhytem. Dude is talented ASF.
@@joshuamiller8235 yeah you get the cramps after the second verse lol
A lot guitarists make me go "Whoa!" Very few make me ask "How?" Dave makes me go "WTF." Impressive as that left hand can be, it's the right rhythm keeper that keeps the foundation so the rest can be built.
No matter how much I practice crash I still can’t stop my hand from cramping up. His chords are so complex.
been practicing it for over a year now, still hurts haha
Seems pretty simple to me. Keep practicing, you’ll get it.
His finger dexterity is unbelievable.
@@alexraia1377 yeah bro. not even pro guitarrist see it simple, but yo do. youre the type of guy who says that can beat and ufc fighter if u train 3 months; the type of guy that says he had a full beard at 13
There's a easier way to play it
Talent is just oozing out of this guy every which way, so talented. Amazing. love this guy. Talent like this is fewer and fewer these days.
I always loved Dave’s acoustic sets so much more than his studio stuff. Don’t get me wrong the studio stuff was amazing but the beauty of his singing and guitar playing can get lost. He’s such a force just with his guitar!
Instantly beautiful as soon as he sings the first line
One thing sunflower and I agree on. Dave is amazing.
Dave’s live acoustic stuff is my favorite
Damn this is incredible.
My husband and I have been fans of Dave ever since the album Under the Table and Dreaming came out in 1994. This performance occurred a week before my son was born. Hard to believe I've been a fan for over 26 years, and still love to hear him play. Long live DMB!
That rage poster in the background is so dope ..!!
im a alt/hard rock/metal dude so i was brainwashed to hate this guy but hes crazy talented. I like what im hearing.
same story here my friend!!!
Check out the concerts with just him and Tim Reynolds.
@@Wakeywhodat ok, thanks, I will do that!!!
His lung capacity has increased so much! He's amazing and beautiful!
I was in college 98’-02’. Great time to be in college and alive.
I've never seen the Dave Mittyews band before so this was nice
Dude is still a beast.
Wish we still had musicians in America. Miss good music.
He sounds better Iive than the studio versions and that what makes him SO special!! I went to see him 10 straight years from 1998-2008 to see him during and after my college years at the Gorge In Washington state!!
great david john matthews may 27, 1996 interview !!!
I love how the host is acting like no big deal but kinda notices the greatness at the end!! He's front row to greatest raw talent EVER!!!
Say whatever you want about Dave, but this guy will never not be one with the music. Love DMB one of the best to ever do it
I remember pulling this off Napster and dubbed it to a VHS to show my girlfriend at the time.
I bet she gave you an over-the-pants handy lol
Are you 37 years old too?
Criminal! 🤣🤣
Lmfao!! All of us are old people now but I remember doing that too
@@billklacks9908 yup. 37 here
His music feels timeless.
God I love Dave. So lucky to be alive during his existence
His chord voicings are awesome.
whew, ive been playing guitar about ten years and learned crash into me as soon as i heard the song, playing that lick over and over for the whole song really makes your hand ache! granted daves hands are a lot bigger than mine but its impressive how he can keep it up for so long.
I wish I would have known about him back then, was only 13 at the time, only really discovered Dave in the last 10 years or so, went to my first show last week and it was amazing! Thankful he is still touring!
I love how he is totally somewhere else when he plays. No audience, no cameras, no 300 thousand tv viewers, just Dave and his music.
I passed out at the horde festival in 96 and woke up when a band id never heard of started in on two step. I thought the song was good but my college roommate was blown away and went to the DMB solo show at the gorge the next year and game back raving about it. From 98-2003 we got a huge group together and went to all the gorge shows…they still stick in my head 20 years later because the energy was so incredibly hopeful and positive.
Absolutely beautiful
Just wrings out All Along the Watchtower off the cuff, like it's a simple practice exercise, ,and he fricking rocked it and put his signature vocal stamp on it. Dave's soul IS music!!!!!
Whoa, haven’t seen this one! Thank you!
I love him so much. 💕
Thanks for making such great music Dave Mathew’s
He makes my heart swell and burst with joy.
In this era of quick fix and spin on to the next file, it's great to sit transfixed and in awe of a brilliant performance and back for a second and third round. So perfect. the 90's hey? what a time to have gone through 🙂
A Beautiful song it is 🥀
He was so attractive.
What A brilliant rendition - what an exceptional singer - Wow Dave ( Amazing even without the full band ) ❤🎉🎉
Such a lovely voice and tone

True talent right here. Just amazing!
His synopsis of Crash Into Me 😂 K but watching him play this is 🤤 Really incredible talent!

Got to see the boys and band this last year. He didn't play this song and respected that. They killed it
I’ve never seen this video… amazing
The talent just oozes out of Dave. Amazing what a gift
Crash was the first song I ever played live. Looking back it was a tough choice and a song I still can't play well. I played it because I loved Dave so much. Don't listen to him much anymore but he's always there when I play live.
😂 his voice is extra dave matthewsy in this clip isnt it
He's a genius. Brilliant mind. Handsome man.
Love the lakewood!!!

Well. Happy I stumbled across this....
Awesome, understatement ..
Love, love, love… as always…❤️
This song was pretty big in its day, but the acoustic versions are really nice to hear again
Soul connection... seen him perform huge venues and his band is tight.
Absolutely phenomenal artist/musician. DM epitomizes artistic expression at the apogee of creativity.
