The idea of this scene was for her to quite literally: “Dance herself to death.”

Kind of a bummer to see how many negative comments are on her. She’s a fantastic dancer and nails the choreography. Emotional yet constrained.

this is so chilling. i love the fact nijinski avoided using any more extended movements until she grew more agitated and towards the end as she dances herself closer and closer to death... the inclusion of those leaps turning from stage right to left etc .

Also her facial expression remains blank the whole time. It just adds to the unsettling effect, the uncanniness. Nijinsky was adamant that the dancers should have been emotionless while performing, no fear pantomiming etc.

While her arms were swaying around, they looked like they were very loose and about to fly off. Igor Stravinsky knows how to create such terrifying music, and whoever came up with the choreography knew what they were doing. Very scary dance, but very well done.

To all who think Pietragalla is less than awe-inspiring here:
You're demonstrating the problem with dropping the acculturated trappings and manners of ballet to utterly inhabit the wildness of such a character (rather than skillfully and tastefully *depicting* that wildness, as seen in the Joffrey version): the dancers, critics, and audiences who inhabit the ecosystem of acculturation will icily insist that *she's doing it wrong*.
There is no trace, no whiff, of wasp-waisted lady in leotard at the barre in Paris starchily plying her dainty pliés with perfectly tight hair bun and haughty countenance. Gone. Wiped clean. Here, instead, is a pagan primordial presence from the ancient Russian woods. The actual thing.
And these f-ing people want their starchy French lady.

Milan Kundera writes in an essay from ‘Betrayed Legacies’: ‘Stravinsky gives the barbaric rite a strong, convincing musical form, but one that does not lie: ...’
The sacrificial dance is a synonym for the knowing powerlessness of being at the mercy of the forces of nature. This is a golden piece of the puzzle - „Le sacre du printemps, danse sacrale“.
Is an accompanying song in “We lost”.
FOLLOW ME, boys and girls! Solve the RIDDLE!
„… Irene hears from the open side window of the car that Chrissie has turned up the radio. She hears that it's the culture station. She hears the announcement, hears ...Stravinsky, hears le sacre du printemps, danse sacrale. The first bars sound. Suddenly it is resoundingly loud. Chrissie has turned the radio up to full volume. It's Chrissie's anger. She has to get out too.
Irene walks towards the bridge ramp, the pounding of the music accompanying her for a long time. She hears the sharp cresendos of the orchestra and the rhythmically striking thirds of the timpani. The sacrifice of spring. Spring sacrifice - us? …“

+Chuck E. Jesus And I heard that what you said about Jesus being sacrificed by his followers is false. Fact is that it was the Romans who crucified him, executing him for supposedly "disturbing" the peace in the Empire. His followers were weeping over his death, not celebrating it. Just because the Bible shows people sacrificing themselves in the Old Testament doesn't mean that the Bible promotes human sacrifice. In fact, Christianity, Roman Catholicism especially, is abhorrent towards that kind of backward pagan thinking. So what if Stravinsky loathed what Disney did? You ought to respect people with different beliefs before you get your fascist Dawkinite skull bashed by an angry mob of people that you enjoy taunting on.

+Jill -- your crazy orchestra teacher did you a big favor. One day, I hope, you will appreciate that introduction to a broader artistic awareness.
I have no idea what your idea of normalcy is but if you are a typical American it has been heavily subsidized by corporate interests who rely on formulaic ideas that are fed to the public with little danger of losing their consumer base. ($$$$)

@@morinomajou My reference is not to other artistic pieces of verifiable merit (Firebird being another) but to popular entertainment that requires no effort to consume (the same principle behind junk food). I made no comment about "dark and edgy" content of art being more worthy of our attention. You did. I also did not say that "light and pretty" things are fluff. You did. As you may have noticed, not everything that comes to a theater or is shown on TV is worth the time devoted to watching it. The distinction I am making concerns extending the range of valuable experiences that young people encounter.

It makes more sense when you see the whole ballet. This fragment is at the end. A group of maiden dances in circle, and the one who falls down first is the "chosen one". That chosen one has to dance to the death, otherwise the tribe will not survive. The elders or maidens would surround the chosen one, so she cannot escape alive.
