- HAPPY HALLOWEEN FIXERS!!!!!
Today, we're taking an iPod that hasn’t held a charge in 8 years and we're going to make a whole new kind of monster!
We’re going to give new life to a 4th Gen iPod by replacing the battery and changing out the hard drive for an SSD. Why? Well, the Solid State Drive is lighter, faster, and it won't skip with vibration--not to mention it’ll work really well with that new battery by giving it extended life!

Ipod is still a really solid music player and blowing new life into something old is always nice👍
nice! waiting for other episodes like that, of reanimation
Great video, helped me get a new battery in my iPod.
OMG I loved this special, it was awesome, specialy seeing Gwen dressed as a maniac scientific and putting that accent XD
Kudos!!
BTW I would love to see a christmas special! Anyways, happy halloween everyone!
Gwendolyn you are awesome. Love the video
great episode!
Nice video. Thank you.
Really 64gb is the limit, because my 256gb 4th gen would beg to differ. Seriously though you can go up to 1tb, but the iPod's ram is what holds it back. For the 4th gen it has roughly a 20,000 to 25,000 song limit before it starts becoming unstable. 64gb may also be the limit when using cheap adapters for compact flash cards. Also alot of times when people buy that cheap adapter they overlook the fact that you may need to bridge a solder point to work right in an ipod so be careful using the cheap adapters. If you really want to do it right spend the few extra bucks and buy an adapter from iflash.xyz They work really well, and are well documented showing you recommendations for which model ipod they work best for and what SD cards work best. So this video is still great for opening up the ipod, but get an iflash board and not the cheap adapters unless you really want to save those extra few bucks. It still works, but people have fewer problems and headaches with iflash than using unbranded cheap adapters.
Can someone call Druaga1?
Incrazyboyy Phew I'm not the only one
xd
I've been trying to do this same upgrade to my iPod, but after I plug in the new Compact Flash card, I keep getting the sad iPod icon on the screen and the file folder icon, indicating there is still a hard ware issue somewhere and that the iPod isn't recognizing the CF card. Did you encounter any similar problems while working on this particular device, and if so what did you do to correct the issues? Loved the video, keep up the great work!
awesome. does itunes still work?
I really like the fact that the iPod is just one big... well...... for a mobile storage device... Harddrive with a screen and a click wheel on it :P
genius idea to put an SSD in!
Milan -- If you were around for first iPod release, then that fact spoiled apple forever. You basically would be the one person who saw the magic for what it was: a commercially available to consumers for $57 laptop hardrive with a play-button being sold for $300...add forced iTunes Store, drm software at the time, and what you get is being the one person who sees that Apple makes all humanity look like a bunch of suckers.
Druaga1 did this with the second generation already
Aisback Actually he failed to do it with the 2nd gen and succeeded with the 4th gen
You could also install Rockbox on it
4th and 5th both are the same? And what kind of tools should I use and where I can buy them. thank you.
Any links to what ssd to use?
awesome video!
i found a 4th gen classic just tossed in a box of junk on the curb. i got it to turn on after sitting on the charger all day, but died the second i unplugged it. hopefully the new battery does the trick!
Edit:
So I left my iPod on the charger over night.
Went to check it this morning and it was really hot and still dead. I realized that it was plugged into my Android charging block. Luckily I still have my old iPhone 4 charging block. Switched that out, and it lit right up. Already did a restore and loading up music now.
Yeayuh!
New Edit:
So I got all loaded up and ready to go, but after an hour and a half, the battery was dead. That's a horrible lifespan. Is this normal with the battery replacements?
Nice!
anyone has reccomended parts for the reanimation?
So mine didn't work at first. I tried using minitool partition wizard to format the sd card into a Fat32. Still no cigar. It turns out my 2011 macbook air has a hard time recognizing ipods but my 2014 dell optiplex recognized it flawlessly and restored my ipod.
Ai little harder than all that. You have to have a firewire charger to finish the restore process (I have yet to see a bypass mod), and a proper cf card. Mine has a delkin 32gb and sometimes the ipod will corrupt some of my flac files or ruin rockbox. I know it has nothing to do with the logic board or the hd connector as both were replaced with nos. I think the storage can go higher than 64gb but I havent seen anything but rumors from people saying it can.
Can you make a video "How to put bluetooth on iPod Classic 7th Generation"?
which ipods can accept a bigger than 60gb cf card?
cool.
Will this work with the 40gb ipod?
Awe.. I was hoping you'd keep talking like that the whole time. lol Cool mod! 👍
I don't even think my 4th gen work anymore, Will this work with the 5th gen.
I'm not sure if this is applicable to an iPod Classic (120 Gb). I have far more music than will fit this iPod and I'd love to upgrade to 256 Gb or more
I found it necessary to dig out my firewire charger to get the new battery to charge
It's not that easy, go watch drauga1 channel on CZcams and watch how he did it, it is not an easy and quick process
Robert Powell I agree
I already did this to three iPods and it actually is as easy as shown. Only the first and second generations don't seem to like these cards.
MrMagicMadMax Oh ok
I really enjoyed his video, I think that guy is funny
That’s because the one he had has a FireWire port. The first and second generation iPods cannot convert to SSD because of this. The 4th gen syncs thru USB and 30-pin which is why this video made it look easy.
How good is the DAC on these iPods? And how high fidelity can the files be?
good question, I also wonder how good they are in 2016...
By now it's just hyped like many other "classic" Apple stuff, there are better and newer stuff without the hassle..
If you're really interested in the best quality available get a Fiio music player, it will change your opinion on music players forever..
Search google for "iPod 5.5 vs FIIO X1?"
You will get your some good answers.
if it's similar to Ipod Nano 7th gen than it's shit
For me it was easier prying from the corner where the usb connector is but not the delicate thin metal in the center of the connector.
ive tried this i brought a new battery from ifixit and other parts online ive put it all together it worked at first untill i came to charging it and now nothing whatsoever comes up on the screen when turned on or charging or connected to the pc please can someone help me im so desperate for this to work :)
Theme terrorizing
Great
Can you transform the iPhone 2007?
De casualidad ustedes saben si se le puede poner aplicaciones externas a un Apple TV de 3ra generasion y si es así cuál es y cómo lo ago gracias
No se puede
64GB max? I have seen iPod Photo with 128GB
does this work with 5th gen ipod classic?
Not really. There are differences in the HDDs, but it can be done. It's a bit more involved.
kmikl I have a 5th gen that is halfway falling apart. also, does the 5th get also inly support 64gb max or can it go higher?
+The Doctor all models can go higher than 64gb. I have a 4th gen classic with 128gb sd card and it runs fine. Will be doing the same to my 5th gen classic eventually. It is not hard to do.
Is the 4th Gen really limited to 64Gb? I've seen products that claim up to 10x that much can be used.
I don't know about 4th gen specifically if it has weird limitations, but people have made 1 terabyte ipods. you can go way past 64
How much storage can iPod photo 40GB can take?
128GB at least. I know 256GB can fit in the 60GB models but not sure on the 40GB ones.
And Rockbox firmware ...
hey, you watch tinkernut?
Wait...
The software need to be downloaded right? HD is gone, but the OS isin't??
+Yuri Ramos maybe there was some bios chip on it
That's why she restored it with itunes... that restores the software.
reeeeeeeeee
be carefull on the green adapter board you need to bend the black jumper down near the conecter or risk breaking the screen
so this is only for battery and storage, but if other insides die then?
you can still find parts of all kinds for these models
other parts are MUCH more reliable
For the 4th gens: it's much easier to fix, but I haven't had anything other than battery and HDD die on them.
the other parts don't usually break but you can replace basically everything about these ipods so it's just about buying the part and replacing it
Where can I get the items for this reanimation? I think it's time to have "retro" mac products reanimated
vwjmkv ebay. my cf converter cost me 1$.
XD
If it supports up to 1 TB^^
Hugo TheSucker people have gotten the iPod 5th gen up to 256GB
you can go up to 1tb
Ghoewendilien.
Can I do that with an iPod classic 6th gen?
Be safe everyone. Make sure you only go to neighbors you know well when you go trick or treating.
couldn't you put a bigger battery in, instead of putting a piece of cardboard?
it depends on how big the back housing is but yes, if it's the thick housing you can actually put a bigger battery in there too which adds days of battery life to it.
Not everything in this video is correct, just watch some DankPods.
lmao 5 year olds be like
I lold
I lol'd when I read your screenname and hear Keanu Reaves' voice: "I Know Shao Fu"
Do NOT take those screws off when replacing the battery, it will be a NIGHTMARE to put them back on, and it's completely unnecessary to do so.
when you said you're replacing the hard drive, you meant an HDD?!
Or let the professionals disassemble it. When the ipod 4 is disassembled, it is easy to damage the two cables on the left side of the machine. Because the two cables are very close to the edge of the back shell, it is easy to damage the cable when using the cymbal to remove the buckle. There are no accessories to buy on the line, which is basically equivalent to scrapping.
Am I first? ;o
Who still uses an 'ipod' in 2016?
94Junglist more people than you think
I have an old cracked ass 64 gig 4th gen touch I keep in my car for music. Radio antenna is borked and I can't afford the satellite radio.
> Radio antenna is borked < You're not missing much.
