  • HAPPY HALLOWEEN FIXERS!!!!!
    Today, we're taking an iPod that hasn’t held a charge in 8 years and we're going to make a whole new kind of monster!
    We’re going to give new life to a 4th Gen iPod by replacing the battery and changing out the hard drive for an SSD. Why? Well, the Solid State Drive is lighter, faster, and it won't skip with vibration--not to mention it’ll work really well with that new battery by giving it extended life!

    Really 64gb is the limit, because my 256gb 4th gen would beg to differ. Seriously though you can go up to 1tb, but the iPod's ram is what holds it back. For the 4th gen it has roughly a 20,000 to 25,000 song limit before it starts becoming unstable. 64gb may also be the limit when using cheap adapters for compact flash cards. Also alot of times when people buy that cheap adapter they overlook the fact that you may need to bridge a solder point to work right in an ipod so be careful using the cheap adapters. If you really want to do it right spend the few extra bucks and buy an adapter from iflash.xyz They work really well, and are well documented showing you recommendations for which model ipod they work best for and what SD cards work best. So this video is still great for opening up the ipod, but get an iflash board and not the cheap adapters unless you really want to save those extra few bucks. It still works, but people have fewer problems and headaches with iflash than using unbranded cheap adapters.

    I've been trying to do this same upgrade to my iPod, but after I plug in the new Compact Flash card, I keep getting the sad iPod icon on the screen and the file folder icon, indicating there is still a hard ware issue somewhere and that the iPod isn't recognizing the CF card. Did you encounter any similar problems while working on this particular device, and if so what did you do to correct the issues? Loved the video, keep up the great work!

      Milan -- If you were around for first iPod release, then that fact spoiled apple forever. You basically would be the one person who saw the magic for what it was: a commercially available to consumers for $57 laptop hardrive with a play-button being sold for $300...add forced iTunes Store, drm software at the time, and what you get is being the one person who sees that Apple makes all humanity look like a bunch of suckers.

    awesome video!
    i found a 4th gen classic just tossed in a box of junk on the curb. i got it to turn on after sitting on the charger all day, but died the second i unplugged it. hopefully the new battery does the trick!
    Edit:
    So I left my iPod on the charger over night.
    Went to check it this morning and it was really hot and still dead. I realized that it was plugged into my Android charging block. Luckily I still have my old iPhone 4 charging block. Switched that out, and it lit right up. Already did a restore and loading up music now.
    Yeayuh!
    New Edit:
    So I got all loaded up and ready to go, but after an hour and a half, the battery was dead. That's a horrible lifespan. Is this normal with the battery replacements?

    So mine didn't work at first. I tried using minitool partition wizard to format the sd card into a Fat32. Still no cigar. It turns out my 2011 macbook air has a hard time recognizing ipods but my 2014 dell optiplex recognized it flawlessly and restored my ipod.

  • @sneff212
    @sneff212 Před 6 lety

    Ai little harder than all that. You have to have a firewire charger to finish the restore process (I have yet to see a bypass mod), and a proper cf card. Mine has a delkin 32gb and sometimes the ipod will corrupt some of my flac files or ruin rockbox. I know it has nothing to do with the logic board or the hd connector as both were replaced with nos. I think the storage can go higher than 64gb but I havent seen anything but rumors from people saying it can.

      That’s because the one he had has a FireWire port. The first and second generation iPods cannot convert to SSD because of this. The 4th gen syncs thru USB and 30-pin which is why this video made it look easy.

    Or let the professionals disassemble it. When the ipod 4 is disassembled, it is easy to damage the two cables on the left side of the machine. Because the two cables are very close to the edge of the back shell, it is easy to damage the cable when using the cymbal to remove the buckle. There are no accessories to buy on the line, which is basically equivalent to scrapping.
