DD are a great company, the Frontline was developed for the menace we have here in Scotland called Midgies, you wouldn't last 5 minutes in the wilderness here on a windless day without that bug-net lol.
Really appreciate this video. DD don't have instructions anywhere on how to set up the hammock using the standard cordage - so this was really helpful!
DD has amazing shipping... I ordered some stuff late Monday night here on the east coast and had it early Weds. morning.... And that's after it flew from the UK, went through customs in Chicago, then to Baltimore, then to me in northeastern Maryland. Plus , all the prices on their website include shipping, so a $20 tee shirt will still only cost $20 USD. I've had a DD hoodie for about 4 years now and it's made very well.
I prefer the DD travel hammock - base is waterproof so can use as ground bivvy. I replaced the tree straps with DD's treehuggers, whoopie slings & climbing karabiners - perfect.
This video is a pure godsend. Been looking for a brill set up for this hammock for a very long time! Thank you Dave and pathfinders school for another great video!
Great in depth video.....DD make some great Hammock's. I have had the Frontline XL myself. Made for the larger among us lol....Bug net has hooped poles instead of the straight ones and opens from both side's. Double skinned like this one. Quick tip...I tie a length of para cored to the zips to make it easy to open/close...no stretching 😊 BTW I'm in the UK
I recently bought this hammock, I also bought the whoopie lines and Tree huggers from DD too to make it easier to set up, I have a snakeskin also which makes it easy to pack .
I am using a British army shelter sheet (basha) but not the standard issue one I have a UKSF one, it’s slightly bigger than the standard one , packs to less than half the size and weight amazingly
And is made of a very tough self healing fabric
I bought mine for use in Borneo, so I am using either a British army cotton sleeping bag liner or an Australian Army Issue Poncho liner , easier to regulate heat and can be used for other purposes.
I added some large loops of 4mm shock cord to the zipper pulls to make bigger loops to ensure easier reach when in the hammock
You can also calculate and add a ridge line to the hammock to enable quick and easy consistent setting of the correct hanging angle if you choose
For me the bulk and weight is offset by not needing a heavy sleeping bag and extra warm Kit here
If you are looking for a hammock I really recommend DD very well made and good prices , and better thought out designs than some other manufacturers.
I have had my Frontline Hammock for about 9 years and I love it. I used it all the time in Germany, not as much here in Arizona.
Dave, great video on the Frontline. I miss you on the TV. I loved Dual Survival because of you and Cody. The show went downhill once you left. I also loved Dirty Rotten Survival. Please bring that back.

Been a fan of your work for years. Didn't really have a comment specific to this video...just wanted to say thanks for the years of great content. My fellow PSG just became a Den Master for his local Boy Scout troop in Columbus Indiana. He was a little intimidated because...in his own words..."Leading our youth is a lot more demanding than leading a bunch of 18 year old grunts!" The DD travel hammock is essentially the same but is made to also be used as a bivvi on the ground. Its what i use and i love it
I have the frontline xl and really like it. I also removed the rope from the ends and use whoopie slings
Good explanation; I have this hammock and love it. I modified it by cutting and sewing together the suspension straps supplied to make a loop at each end of the hammock. I then bought some 1" webbing, 4 rappelling rings and 2 lightweight caribiners .
I secure the webbing to the tree, run the live end of the webbing through the rings, like an O ring buckle belt, and connect the hammock loop to the rings with the caribiners. Adjustment is easy, just pull on the end of the webbing until you have it as you want. The rappelling rings lock it under load. Do a half hitch to prevent any unwanted movement and everything stays put as I set it.
Like you said there are a lot of ways to use this hammock, a good bit of kit.
Nice hammock. Thank you for running through the set up. At less than 4 lbs., I doesn't go outside the 4 lb limit I've always set for any tent I carry. I'd carry that thing forever.
It's actually much less than 4 lbs. The hammock weighs 1 lb 14 ounces per DD.

This "Frontline" is exactly like my DD Traveler hammock I've been using for 8 years; however, I've made modifications. On both straps coming from each end, I've sewn sturdy stainless carabiners approx 4 inches from the end of hammock. When the overhead 9x9 tarp is set up, it prevents straps from wicking water into the hammock if it should rain. I've also added toggles & a couple inches of bank line to every zipper tab for ease of zipping from a sleeping bag. First time I tested my DD Traveler was in the back yard during an ice storm. Merely placed a foam pad ($7) & reflective bubble windshield screen ($10) on top facing up between double layered bottom. With a Military Sleep System (MSS, $65), found no need for an under quilt & slept warm and cozy all night. I've also used it as a bivy dozens of times.

I got my DD Frontline in May 2019. I replaced the suspension ropes that came with it. I chose to use an Amsteel loop at one end and I modified the other end to mimic a bridge hammock for added shoulder room. I secure to my anchor trees with suspension webbing on both ends; a Beckett Hitch on one end & climbing rings on the other end for easy adjustability. I love this hammock for its ease of setup and the superior mosquito netting setup incorporated into its design. I've already camped in 90+ summer heat and I'm now looking to see what it can do in the cold of the fall & winter! I pair it with my DD 4 x 4 or Kelty Noah 12 depending on how heavy I want to roll and how much inclement weather I expect.

I really like this hammock design. I prefer the shock cord net suspension over the ridgeline style hammocks. It reminds me of my mosquito hammock with the double floor. Very well done and informative video. Thanks!

Just woke up in my DD Frontline Hammock. Third time I slept in it. I certainly recommend it! Excellent price quality. Decent material. I can see thia whole thing is well thought out from experience.. eye for detail. I bought the Bergen Combination Set for € 265,- with the rucksack, 3x3 tarp, sleeve, carpet etc. I'm happy with.. only the rucksack is small. I'm still trying to figure out how I would get enough food etc. with me for longer trips. I'm still practicing on a camping which has a forest, because wildcamping is illegal here. It's all new to me and also still trying to figure out how to use the lines and make proper nots.. tonight there will be a thunderstorm and I'm thinking now whether I will stay an extra night. Think this setup would make it through. Thanks for the video! I changed the original suspension to amsteel with drip line and use carabiners with treehuggers. I use 2 separate shock cords for the mosquito net from each side towards the tree. so I can pull it up high for maximum space inside. It is not connected to the same line as my tarp, so when I move the tarp doesn't shake. Not sure of this is the proper way to do it.. just trying to find out ways that work and meanwhile watch videos as these to learn more. I have an inflatable mat in between the two layers which provides a lot more comfort. There are lots of big mosquitos here and I hear them buzzing around but they can't get in. Photo: ibb.co/gFg40RW

I used a DD Travel hammock on two long canoe trips...i just cut branches to hold the net in place...they make a real good hammock...been using DD hammocks (and others) for twelve years now...sometimes i have to sleep on the ground, though i'd prefer not to...thanks David...woods

Funny thing,I was looking for it this morning
i have dd traveler hammock, its the same as frontline, just bottom side is waterproof and can be used as a bivi. couple of tips for ultra fast set up. 1. never take out these poles once set, always leave inside the hammock and all you ll need to do is unbend them. 2. when its raining a lot water will come to your hammock through the ropes. ropes are pretty long, what i did is i stretch hammock for a bivi setup ( if you intend to use it) and cut the rope, so i have just enought for the streched hammock if i need to, then just tie a knot to secure the loop. and the left over that you cut use as a tree huger and use a carabiner or S shape in between, so the water fill hit the metal and fall on the ground instead of going further to your hammock + its much much easier with the carabiners.3. after the first use, just undone 1 end of the hammock, bend it long wise (like it would be with hammock sleeve) hold it tight and just roll it nice and tight leaving these poles inside just bent. and then the next time you will never have to put it on the ground ever again.after its rolled nice and tight, you will always have one end at the top, just take out of the bag, put tree hugers first, clip 1 end to the tree, roll it back, clip another end to the second tree and adjust. :)

hammock life.... i have one setup in my bedroom at all times when i want to relax or take a snooze, it's healthier on the back and hips than any mattress. i've owned 2000$ swiss tempurpedic mattresses i'm not joking around... learning the proper way to sleep or relax in a hammock is key tho.

This baby is win even for longer trips - as multi functional. Works perfectly as Bivy.
DD Travel Hammock + Tarp (Total weight < 1.4kg ) is perfect substitute of tent where you prefer sleeping in hammock, but not sure if during your trip you will be able to hang.
DD is good stuff.
I love my DD 11.5x11.5 tarp it's literally the perfect size tarp. Just that Xtra bit over a 10x10 with trivial weight added is awesome, especially to get those enclosed pitches going with a hammock. When sleeping on the ground its a palace. I've never tried their hammocks I'm sure it's a great product they do quality work but I got my onewind 10'6" double wide hammock with bug netting(bottom entry) for $45. It's a crazy deal. That model was on sale I think because they only had ugly colors left but I got the orange which at least makes some sense in deer season, but to me the color doesn't matter as I'd cover it with a bottom quilt and it's hidden by a tarp when not in a snakeskin. Anyways, I'd like to see how this design feels with this deployment design. I feel like it would cinch you in like a draw string which idk that I'd like. I like to lay flat hence the double wide. I also think the saved weight is somewhat countered by the unnecessary second layer. No it saying it isn't a good feature for some people but for me it isn't needed and adds weight for no reason, tho admitted trivial weight. However the fact that net isn't removable also ads to weight. I'd rather have a removable bottom entry by it Ik some swear by a zipper, not me tho. I'd like to point out that this DD hammock is slightly lighter still than my double wide onewind so I'm not saying it's heavy I'm simply saying it could be even lighter, which is amazing. I just thought to redesign It without the use of traditional rigging to save weight was somewhat countered by using a permanent net and double layering

Hello D.C., Great video. I intend to take your classes as soon as I can. I live in the PNW and we get a lot of rain. If one integrates the bug net with a tarp do you recommend adding something to keep the rain from running down the Ridgeline into the hammock? I think the usual way of using a Prusik loop to connect a tarp and the bug net would allow water to run into the hammock.

You didn't mention raising the foot end of the hammock above the head end. It helps get a more comfortable lay.
This system is way too slow for me. I want to walk up to a tree, use a caribiner to fasten one suspension strap around the tree, string the hammock out the bag to the other tree and fasten the strap using another caribiner and adjust the hammock using turnbuckles. The bug net is already installed and tight. Nothing touched the ground.

The hammock alone weighs 1 lb 14 ounces. That's about normal for any hammock with a bugnet. Carrying it on a backpacking trip shouldn't be an issue.

Hi Dave, I own a DD travel hammock and a DD tarp, fantastic equipment at a very reasonable price!
Unfortunately living in the UK I found that sleeping in a hammock to be a bit cold for most of the year, and that's why I came away from using it, but I still wanted something light and quick to set up! So I changed to using Snugpak equipment, a friend of mine owed a Snugpak stratosphere, and let me borrow it for a couple of camping trips, and WOW I was very impressed!
The only problem that I had to overcome was the feeling of being a bit claustrophobic! And due to the small size of the stratosphere I found that I had to use a tarp also in order to keep my kit dry. So I tried a Snugpak Ionosphere, which I found a lot better even though it's a bit bigger a slightly heaver to Carry!
I don't know if you are planning to look at any of the Snugpak range in future videos? But I must admit that I have been very impressed with snugpak's quality and price for years now!

@Open Eye. A decent underquilt will solve your cold problems. I've slept in minus 20 F and remained toasty with the proper insulation. If you're carrying a tarp anyway and have access to trees, it's hard to beat the comfort and space of a hammock/tarp combo. And you don't need to find a soft flat spot.

It looks like a nice hammock. Every time I lay in a hammock though, my feet start getting numb and falling asleep and getting pins and needles and its uncomfortable to me. So I avoid hammocks.
A lot of people put a small pack or pillow under their knees.
What is full weight? With mosquito and shockcord?

I love my hammocks, I'm a back and side sleeper and I have no problems. Snoring shouldn't stop you from hanging in a hammock.
