Songs like "What If This Is The All The Love You Ever Get" and "Don't Give In" are very exposed, naked vocals. The vocal on "Don't Give In" almost doesn't sound like you. I had a cold that day in the studio. My voice was sounding like it was wrecked. But I recorded it like a guide. When I went to sing it properly, Garret's daughter-who is my goddaughter, both his daughters are my goddaughters-she came in when I was re-recording the vocals, you'd better not re-record that. I just turned 25 and this band especially gary means so much to me. I always feel every song/lyrics they delivers. Now and forever, i'll love this band.
Lately, Gary was doing late night acoustic videos on the snowpatrol insta account. His voice was amazing on all songs, except this new one (he sings it there in the original key). At first I thought maybe the alcohol ruined his voice a bit, but since his voice sounds great on the other ones, it can't be that. There is something about this one. Like he has to strain his voice, like he wants to give it more loudness and power and it comes out cracked... I think he needs time to get comfortable with it, although he wrote it.
This song is in a weird part of the voice where his normal vocal range in his throat ends and just before his normal falsetto starts. Therefore it's a little harder to sing because he's straining his voice more than their other songs, so much that this performance is in a lower key compared to the original song and insta video, yet it's still hard for him to sing. He'll get used to it the more he sings it, he just needs to warm up to it
I think that may be due 2 reasons. 1) He is not used to this tone, so he is adjusting to something so new. 2) The song is super personal, and it comes from a very dark place, so I believe that makes it even harder to sing it, and 3) He has been out of stages for over 6 years, and he has come back talking about his fight against depression, drugs and alcohol problems, I think he feels ashamed about those problems, so that fear and shame is reflected on this first performances.
