  • A semi-final to savour for Fitzroy, as Mick Conlan kicks four goals in a nerve-racking match against Sydney at a muddy MCG.
The preliminary final the following week ended their run and was the last time the club featured in September, despite not merging with Brisbane for another 10 seasons.

Fitzroy should never have been allowed to die.

My dad still talks about this game, and of course the previous game against Essendon at Waverley. I was only 2 at the time, but for the Roys to get this result on that day was just unbelievable. Most players were on one leg by that time of the season and a massive crowd at the G....most Roys players had never played in front of crowds like that every before, not even close. Reading the various books and articles on 86, the Roys players were pooped by this point and got done by Hawthorn comprehensively the following week. What a team though: ROOS, WILSON, OSBORNE, QUINLAN, CONLON, PERT, RENDELL, BARWICK, HARRIS. Great memories of them all.

If Maguire gets his way North Melbourne will be the next team exterminated! He's forgotten that Collingwood were in a similar position recently, but hey, can't let the 'woods die! Teams like Nth Melbourne, (my team), Footscray, perhaps even StKilda and Hawthorn would be on the target list so they can thin the Vic based clubs out. Ironically, it was the VFL that all the top players wanted to play in yet all the tradition and fan loyalty counts for nothing with the corporates. BTW Fitzroy were also my second team at school. My best friend was Fitzroy mad and our school footy jumper was the Fitzroy maroon and blue but without the emblem. My friend managed to scrounge the number 13 for his team jumper, his favourite player Alex Ruscuklic. I wanted number 4 (Sam Kekovich) but missed out.

so many other clubs were virtually broke.. Hawthorn, Melbourne, Footscray, & Richmond.. but they were given a helping hand.. & all went on to b power houses & win premierships after 2000.. why does the AFL pump money into them & dead beats like Gold coast? but abandoned won of the traditional great clubs?

In a way Fitzroy technically should have been folded in 1986. They were lucky to last another 10 years. The AFL Centenary season in 1996. Kind of fitting in some weird way.
