Those automatic feeders are cruel making the hungry cats wait. Sometimes they need more, sometimes less. Is your cat puking a lot but nothing coming up? (Not hacking, like a hairball) When their tummies are so empty that the stomach acid gets too strong, they throw up.
The cats become anxious and obsessed by the machine.
We always have some good quality, easily digestable kibble out. You'll know if it isn't easily digestible if they puke it up hours later and the kernels are still intact. It helps if you mix in a bit of Purina Kitten Chow, regardless of cat age. That kibble just dissolves in their tummies, very easy on all kitties, all ages. I also mix in a feline uretic kibble. A vet once told me "You can keep treating the symptoms or do preventative maintenance ". So now we add a uretic kibble and haven't had any problems since. (fingers crossed)
They do learn to self regulate, it might take a few weeks or even months to get over the anxiety of not having enough food to eat. Initially they might gain weight, but that falls away eventually.
We give elderly cats the Purina Kitten Chow and also Gerber baby food in a jar. Chicken is the favorite with ham a close second. I take the lid off and microwave the jar for five seconds. This also gets more water in them too from the runny meat.
Most people start on those automatic machines for two reasons:
1. Their cat is overweight or diabetic. Answer- It needs more activity! And higher quality food will automatically make the cat eat less because it is satisfied sooner. Initially it will eat a lot because of the novelty of the new food.
2. The owners are lazy. (sorry)
I know there are other, legitimate reasons, it just seems to do more harm than good in most cases.
We also found that a can of food once or twice a day satisfies them in addition to the constant kibble bowl.
We have fostered hundreds of cats.

Give that poor cat some cheese! Just like people, most cats have no problem with dairy products. And if they do, they learn to avoid it. Mine love cheese.
Actually, they're lactose intolerant, so giving them cheese and other dairy products is not a good idea. They'll get diarrhea amongst other problems.
