      Which stretch of the canal was this filmed on? I ask because it looks familiar. I was born and lived next to bridge 27 70 years ago.

    As someone who lives close to the Welland Canal in Ontario, Canada and accustomed to seeing the massive Great Lakes freighters traversing the canal, it's kind've cool to see these smaller boats making their way through a little canal like this. It's what the early Welland Canal would've looked like in the 1800s which we still have scattered remnants of in some areas. Nice video. 👍

    Not exactly an icebreaker, ice was just 1-2 cm thick or so. Just a regular narrowboat, wouldn’t cope with thick ice.

    I assume the canal freezes over rarely. was this the beast from the east.

      Canals freeze over more than you think. They aren't that deep so the water gets cold.

    How much " work " is actually taking pace on the canals? Is most traffic pleasure? I assume the upkeep cost must be very high on maintenance of the canal and lock system. Was wondering how tax dollars could be spent on the system without the public crying foul. Thanks for any insight, appreciate the response.

      There's almost no genuine trade on the canals any more apart from a few floating retail small businesses. I don't believe there's any actual load carrying still happening at all. However there are more boats on the waterways today than at any time in history and they are all pleasure boats or live-aboard boats. The canal and river trust owns and maintains the waterways and collects fees for each boat plus has a large government income, which was fixed for 15 years so will inevitably become a problem in the future when cuts are made.

      @@DrPepper22222 Thank you. I hope they continue to maintain them. In the US there is less and less money for the Army Corps of Engineers to maintain harbors, waterways, canals, locks ect.

      I don't think there's any cargo transport on the canals at the moment. The boat you see in the video is carrying coal and diesel to supply boat owners, and the Canals and Rivers Trust operates a fleet of boats that they use to maintain the canals, but that's all internal to the canal and not trade with the "outside world". There are also lots of little cafes and shops on board boats but that's basically just a floating building. Every now and again, a company starts using canal transport for goods but it requires very specific circumstances (essentially, needing to move goods between two locations that are both directly on the canal, in loads of about 10t and with no need to go faster than walking pace) and it never seems to last very long.

    Now ,how thick of ice can you'll break,also what about the cooling of engine

    • @tomellis4750
      @tomellis4750 Před 2 lety

      Not very thick, see this - czcams.com/video/wXaNNjNQH5Y/video.html Ice rubs the blacking off your boat. Glass fibre boats could be holed by it. Engines are usually cooled just like a car, although some old boats took water from the canal, as the inlet is from the bottom, it is not a problem.
