Don't get fooled by only looking at the frequency response curves. You should also show us group delay, waterfall phase and/or and distorsion graphs. Otherwise, it's not an adequate comparison nor fair representation of how the two subs differ. The idea of comparing subs is a good one for sure, but make sure to include the time domain related parameters and distorsion graphs next time. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
They are both sealed subs. Any group delay differences between them should be inaudible and a non factor unless there is some major manufacturing defect.
@@LeeLee-fi7mx All subs have unwanted time domain related issues, so it’s not wise to argue that sealed subs lacks hearable group delay variations just because they are sealed.
On top of the cabinet type related acoustical influences, the boundary interferences (when present) and the DSP (when used) will both alter the phase and timing response.
To objectively review any loudspeaker product indoors without a Klippel system (or similar) or without using a highly controlled semi anechoic or anechoic environment, one have to be aware of these factors. Such a review will be a review of the whole system (loudspeakers and its connected electronics, the room influences, the placement of sources and receivers…)
Jiles, you provide a great service with this review. Very helpful guidance for enthusiasts to invest wisely in bass response/performance in their systems/homes. Congrats on > 100K subscribers!
Thanks!!!
That's the best intro I've seen in a long time. Thanks for that.
Glad you like it!
been waiting for this to drop
Hope it’s useful. It’s pretty eye opening.
Thank you for this comparison Jiles. Very interesting.
Thanks! It was quite eye opening.
I actually have 4 of the Starke 15s caught them on sale and they are awesome. I used them along with to Rytmik 18s.
Thats awesome. Ive always wanted to try out a Rythmik subwoofer!
I’d love to experience a pair of F18’s!
Thanks for the video man. What a gem. I currently have 2 SVS SB16 Ultras was thinking about adding 2 more subs simply for a better response. Output in my room is fantastic. Instead of spending 5k for 2 more SB16’s I may just purchase 2 of these. I’m really good with DSP so I don’t think I’d have a problem integration. Awesome man!!!!
Now is the time while the 2 for 1 is going.
@@JilesMcCoy I was not aware. I will make my purchase this week. Thanks bud!!!!
LOVE that you did this comparison! Stoked to get my four SW15s in March or April…when ever they ship them! Hoping to replace my dual Monolith 12” and have one SW15 in each corner(ish) of the room 😊
That’s going to be awesome!!!
@@JilesMcCoy I’m hoping so! I’ll probably pick up a Marantz Cinema 40 AVR as well and take advantage of having 4 independent sub outs and Dirac when it comes. 4 channels are already driven with separate amps too, so I shouldn’t be taxing the internal amps much at all.
@@DustinFrancis Nice man!!!!
@@DustinFrancis Love to see some pics. Film a bunch of your room and I can make a walk through video of it!
@@JilesMcCoy I might be able to do that. I had a (very small...less than 900 cubic foot) theater room built in our basement when we redid it a few years ago (dual 5/8 drywall, green glue, safe and sound insulation, dual 20 amp dedicated circuits, etc.) but once I got my studio, we ended up converting that into another family room and my theater stuff is in a living room area at my studio now. Since I will only be here for a couple years and I'm technically renting it from my brother (it's a townhouse condo identical to the one we own that is a 2 minutes walk away), I'm not doing anything permanent, so I'm not sure how nice it will look/be, but I will have it be in a state that I am pleased with it until we move again and have another proper theater room built.
Individually, these subs are performing virtually identical to each other in your room within less than 10 db...I am stunned. Catching the Starks when they are on sale makes this a no-brainer deal. Even if you invest in a MiniDSP/Umik-1 you are still saving $$$ and should get a flatter frequency response with multiple subs. This is the way. Thank you, Jiles 🍺
The Starke's do really well. The Perlisten obviously have all the bells and whistles and have more raw output. But man, at 1K for 2 of the SW15... thats pretty compelling.
❌✅ you do realize for every (3 db) that’s twice as loud
Right 👋🤨‼️
@@eurekaakerue4649 3db is double the sound pressure, but it takes 10 db for the perceived volume to double.
@@AeroPR 👋😝❌ short word ((Wrong))‼️
Hi another great review, but have you tried the SVS SB 16 against the perlisten subwoofer? I’ve two SVS 16 subwoofers would I see much better base with the perlisten? Thanks Oz
I would love to measure the sb16 and pb16! It’s on my to do list I just don’t have access to them :(
Any time you double the subs without any wattage increase its 3db gain but if you double the subs and watts it's 6db not 3db.so if you go from one powered sub to 2 powered subs it's 6dB then from 2 to 4 it's another 6db added.
K
Exactly. And for $1000 it would pretty much match the output of the $5000 sub!
Great vid! Glad to see an REW comparison! Would love to see a follow-up by adding the REW measurements of the Dayton Audio Ultramax 18”build that you did ( which has inspired me to buy 2 and build - just waiting on the kit from parts-express). I wonder if that would compete with the Perlisten in terms of dB output if properly amplified with a 1000w amp.
I need to look and see if I have measurements at my standard spot on that subwoofer.
Brian I'm just building 2 diy ones ATM myself. Should get back out there and cut some wood
That would be amazing to see a Dayton ultimax against another commercial sub. I’m sure there are 1000s of ppl wanting to see this!
Would love to see UM15 vs Starke SW-15. I have the Starke and love them but curious about a DIY UM15.
Can you do a comparison of the MK x15+ subwoofer and the two mentioned in the video? (MK is the same price as the perlisten)
If you can get them to send me the sub to measure :)
I just ordered my second SW15. It will be here on thursday. I'm wondering if I should use my minidsp 2x4HD or just use them as dual subwoofers in my Emotiva XMC-2.
I’d try both and see what works better for you.
Great deal on the Starkes.
100%
Where did you place them in your room? What about the distortion measurements, and thermal effects? Since one can get 10 of the Starke's meaning multisub, it would be preferable, as long as there's floor area, for as you say a smoother presentation across the room. Two Starkes would give +3dB, four total would give another +3dB, double that to eight for another +3dB.
I measure at the center of my front wall.
I wonder how these compare to some of the sealed DIY subs you built a while ago. I don't know if they were only 18s or not and also the amplification is external, which makes comparing prices difficult. But just for the sake of fun, I'd like to know how e.g. a Dayton UM15 with a decent amp performs in your room compared to these two
If I ever get a UM15 kit I’ll publish the details!
Jiles, do you plan on doing a vid on the new GSG 18” sealed and would you use the Um-18 or the stereo integrity Hst18?
If I can get my hands on the gear I will do a video for sure. I’ve not looked at the numbers yet to choose which I would prefer. I haven’t used the hst18 before so that would be a fun one to try.
If you ever had a chance to demo or test any of the JTR subwoofers?
I’ve never even seen one in person as far as I know.
Amazing video, Jiles! Super kudos for making this. The price to performance delta is really something. The Starke though is $999, right? But they often run deep discount or 2 for 1 sales?
That’s right. The 1k price is fine but the bogo is crazy!
I just ordered (2) SW15p for $1,459 shipped!
A good comparison would have been to show distortion levels at the same dB.
*thumbs up*
I'm debating on either 2 Starke SW15s, a single SVS SB4000, or a Rythmik FVX12 or their E15HP2. I like midbass, but also a sub that can dig deep for hip-hop, but also a sub that can pick up a tuba and chello/Double-bass/Tololoché. Any suggestions sir, or maybe a sub that I didn't mention? It's for a nearfield listening setup...desktop PC setup.
All of those probably will get you where you need to be. But if you go duals you would be able to do stereo subs if you want to get super fancy and cool with everything. And you would have more flexibility down the line if you need to change things up.
@@JilesMcCoy I appreciate your input sit, thank you.
How are these with music honestly ? I run rythmik right now because of the very accurate sound with music so what are these compared to them ?
Just as good.
For the $$, I'd go with two SW15's in each corner for a total of 4 subs and dial them in with mini dsp's. Still way less than the Perlisten and you'll get WAY more bass output with much more even response throughout your theater.
That is probably the best deal in subwoofers right now. For 2K out the door you get more bass than you need all the way down to under 10 hz. Its an amazing value.
What about their performance un The time domain?
Sealed so no shift under port tune.
How big is the room and the room with leakage again?
Its about 17 x 14.5 with 8' ceilings. Very little leakage. Just around some door edges at the carpet.
Does THD matter at all or is it all about how loud and low they play?
THD is important. That is baked into a CTA-2010A measurement that is often used. I think I might start doing a hack job version of that measurement in room as an additional point of comparison that takes distortion in to consideration.
I’m interested in 4 sw15’s, are they still running deals?
I think they sold out and are waiting for more stock.
The word is getting out on the amazing Starke Sound SW15.
I love daisy chaining the XLR inputs multiple Starke Sound sub woofers. How come miniDSP does not make a XLR input.
@jiles please make a video on miniDSP and multiple SW15(s).
They do make an XLR version on the new one they just released! If I can get my hands on a bunch of sw15s I will. I borrowed the one I made the video with.
Yes, they make the minidsp flex with xlr, but there is also the older minidsp balanced 2x4 that has been out for quite a while. While it doesn’t have “XLR” connections, it does have balanced inputs and outputs. They just use those little hardwire connectors so that you actually can connect balanced xlr connectors to it. You just have to strip one side of an xlr cable and hardwire them to the clip connectors. It’s super easy, you just strip the wires, stick them in the correct holes and torque the screws down. It’s pretty cheap too, much less expensive than the mini dsp flex, but of course the flex is a lot nicer.
Starke SW15 is a great 15" Subwoofer as it's $549, better when was $499 on Sale. My OSD Trevoce 12s paid $285 and Very Happy as it's quality, was selling for $600 few years ago.
Prices went up on many subs, mine was $299(got 5% reduced promo code) now it's $349 and the Trevoce triple 15's went from $499 to $599. I just wanted a cheap Budget system and the Onkyo THX Atmos receiver for $349 on Amazon I got $100 off using Prime Visa promo. $300 Vizio M51 Soundbar + $285 Sub and $270 Onkyo receiver. Seperate controls I can keep Soundbar low while playing the subwoofer via Onkyo. At night after 9 pm so neighbors not complaining i can just use Soundbar with it's 5" down-firing subwoofer. Mostly i run the Onkyo and OSD Trevoce sub from Afternoon until 5 pm. But i will start using it more 7-9 pm especially on Friday and Saturday night.
I did not want any Rear speakers as the system is basically facing my Kitchen. Using the 2 small Vizio soundbar rears they on my Kitchen Counters. Wanted Dolby Atmos. Later if i move the system I may buy more speakers or bring them from Orange County. Klipsch R-120 SW compared to my OSD Trevoce is junk. Klipsch is okay for House Parties or Rap music, it's not good for nothing.... Later on I will buy SVS SB2000
Nice!
@@JilesMcCoyMaybe CZcams just removed them recently
Do you think 4 of the starke sw15 will sound good
I think 4 would be awesome.
So the distortion levels are the same?
To the ear there was no audible distortion from either.
here in canada the BOGO sale for starke sw15 is $1378 for 2x sw15 before shipping ...this must just be due to the USD to CAD conversion? all this talk of $500 each got me super excited :(
Its $999 USD. Have to adjust for whatever your local currency is of course.
Dual stacked sm15 should give a 6db increase which will put it much closer to a single perlisten for way less
Very true. They have then at $499 per right now for preorder.
Man per listen is great but I think for the price 10 starkes would get you there and some. Just saying .
Both great options… the Starke does get you there.
The Perlisten is 5K in price. Is it worth it? That seems too expensive for one 15 to me.
The sub is an absolute beast. I love it. It’s up to you if 5k is worth it.
I rather go with starke, and just keep adding and stacking. For bigger rooms
Its the best deal in subwoofers now.
@@JilesMcCoy I would love to see a diy m&k build with 18inch subs or perliston.
please post graphs to 5hz to show extenson
I only measure down to 10 hz.
Ordered 2 on the current BOGO. Absolutely stupid deal/value. Stoked to get them.
Best deal in audio right now.
@@JilesMcCoy For real. This video sealed the deal for me. Getting the sonic coverage benefit of dual subs on the Starke BOGO for 1/5th the cost of a single Perlisten AND getting (arguably) within 3-4 decibels of it's output AND getting reasonably similar accurate sonic signature? Pfft.... Take my money. Honestly, if I didn't want to continue my marriage, I would have bought 4.
HSU 15" Subwoofer for $940- ULS-15 MK2 Subwoofer probably the Best for the Price. The more expensive home theater subwoofer has been sold out.
Right on.
@@JilesMcCoy you see the video clips I sent??
Can you please get back with me if you’re able to get deals on the sw15’s? I’d like to talk with you outside of here if possible by email or phone? Thx
I cant get any deal better than the 2 for 1000. Thats the best Ive ever seen. but you can email me at info@hometheaterfanatics.com
@@JilesMcCoy Ok, yea 2 for 1000 is really good. I didn’t know if they were still running that deal or not and if they weren’t I was wondering if you would be able to get that deal for me still
@@ryaneckel5601 I’ll ask my contacts over there.
@@JilesMcCoy Ok thx. Btw I sent you an email
@@JilesMcCoy Did by chance see my email? Just making sure it went through to you
This is wild so how does Perlisten get away with these prices? It seems for the majority of people you’re better off buying the Starkest!
It depends on what you are looking for. The Perlisten has more output, and a lcd screen, and an app, etc. If you just want a super solid great performing sub the Starke is the way to go.
VTF-15H MK2 Subwoofer from HSU was sold out now discontinued and the newer model also Sold Out on pre-orders. VTF-3 MK5 HP is for sale at $999.
Right on!
@@JilesMcCoy I finally got the OSD Trevoce triple 12s subwoofer tested out with San Andreas, the earthquake movie. It rattle and shake my big slider window with such a High Quality Earthquake Bass, was Super Crazy yet Sweet.
@@JilesMcCoy the Onkyo THX Atmos receiver is only connected to the Subwoofer and using my Dolby Atmos Soundbar, went through many different setups was a headache but working Great now. The HDMI input on the Soundbar not working so I just connected the Coaxial and Optical cables to the Onkyo receiver and running the Main Arc HDMI from Onkyo to the TV. Optical cable from Onkyo to the TV, and Coaxial from my Blu-ray player to Onkyo.

14hz for $500....
That's better than the RSL! Sounds like the one to go with.
Its the best deal in subs by a long shot.
I live in 🇸🇪 so no starke sw 15 for me then.
You can just use a forwarder to send to you.
Oh PR at work lol
PR? These are sealed, not bass reflex.
@@JilesMcCoy is all good is just the way how some company hype there product being much better but is not
@@eddietours3728 Perlisten does hype up their subs, but they are really dang good. They are expensive but you get your money's worth. The measurements tell the story. Its a strong subwoofer.
@@JilesMcCoy ✌
Nice video. Most people looking at Perlisten are not really looking for the price. I have the Perlisten D215S and the bass is so accurate and dynamic. I am looking at the D15S or D12S as my nearfield subwoofer. I currently run dual SVS PC-4000’s nearfield. The difference is very noticeable in quality of the bass. Nice video.
SVS and REL both beat the Per sub by far...
Which and how?
@Jiles McCoy SVS Ultra 16 sealed is competitive at $2200 to the $5000 Per sub. Rel Carbon Special at $4400 is competitive and the Rel 212/SX at the same $5000 beats it.
Thanks! I’d love to try the REL out one day. It’s a beautiful piece of gear!
@@Breakinlife007 Has anyone posted measurements on the REL? I'd love to see them in comparison. The 1510 seems like it could be somewhere in between the Starke and Perlisten.
The perlisten is hands-down better at all levels... Actually, this comparison shouldn't even be. Starke is great, but no where near the perlisten..
They're respectively perfect for those who can afford them.
Did you watch the video?
