It's crucial to know your turns as you go through Barnsley. Turn right at Stairfoot old station - straight on goes to Barnsley town centre, Then , after about half a mile, turn left following NCN67, or you'll end up in Cudworth and will need to go on some busy roads to rejoin the Trail.

the old railway you asked to identify was the Hull and Barnsley railway stairfoot section only ever used for freight as passenger trains only ran between Hull and cudworth

I regularly do this route however there is no need between 05:10 to 07:02 to do that section as it is safer come off just before underpass via the path to the left and head down the road (Pontefract Road A628) to the roundabout / bypass. When you reach the Roundabout take the second exit (the first being Burton Road that you come out of on this video but further up) and head up the bypass and pass under the first bridge and then as you approach the second roundabout you will see the trail on the right.

I think it's the old stairfoot-cudworth line that eventually joins up with the midland line going past Royston and Monkton

Yeah, along NCN route 1, I have done it a couple of times and myself and John rode it earlier this year, that's when I filmed it, however... checks release schedule... it's not due out 'till March 2017, its ridable on a hybrid or MTB, It's a great route but would be better at warmer times of the year. It was just short of 45 miles out and back and I have a Strava ride here www.strava.com/activities/600554910, if you need any more info let me know.
