Top 5 failed sneaker technologies
Avia - Cantilever Technology
Sneaker Shown: Avia 830
Year (Innovation): 1979
Cantilever technology centers the heel of a shoe over a concave sole such that the sole "acts as a trampoline" to soften the force of impact, add support and provide a return in energy to one's stride.
The company is also known for some of the performance technologies built into their shoes, including the Cantilever Heel (heel support), the ARC - Anatomical Rebound Cradle (comprehensive foot cushioning and arch support), and Avia's FOM technology (shock compression).[10]
In 1991, Avia filed a lawsuit against Nike, alleging that Nike's ''Air 180'' and ''Air Force 180'' running and basketball shoes infringed upon Avia patents. Avia accused Nike of pirating its ''Cantilever'' technology, which uses a cushion to provide shock absorption and stability. The company contended the technology has been the basis of its products since Avia was founded in 1980. Avia widened the suit in January 1992[11] and settled in December 1992.[12]
Converse React
Converse - REACT Juice Technology
Sneaker Shown: Converse Aero Jam
Year: 1993
Wait, what? There's a responsive, seemingly radioactive fluid in my sneaker that may or may not automatically transition to the area of my foot when needed for running and jumping and, a 6-7 Grandmama wears them? Gimmick or not, REACT Juice is probably one of the coolest-sounding sneaker innovations of all-time and Grandmama is the epitome of marketing genius. How could the Aero Jam not have been commercially successful?

Reebok ZigTech
Reebok - ZigTech Technology
Sneaker Shown: Reebok Zig Pulse
Year: 2011
Reebok Zig is an athletic footwear technology and collection of shoes designed by Reebok. ZigTech debuted in January 2010 and was first introduced with the ZigPulse later that year.[1] ZigTech includes a zigzag foam sole that is designed to push athletes forward.[2] The design assists in energy return to the wearer by absorbing impact at the heel and dispersing the energy through the zigzag composition which propels the athlete forward and also reduces stress on the shins.[3] Reebok has released various styles of ZigTech designs that are compatible across a variety of sports.[4]

Nike Shox
Nike - Shox Technology
Sneaker Shown: Nike Shox BB4
Year: 2000
Inspired by the springy indoor running track at Harvard University, Nike's Shox not only absorb impact while running, but also claim to spring back and add more power to one's stride. The "Boings" certainly seemed legit when Nike gave Vince Carter a pair for the 2000 Olympic games
Shox is a shoe feature developed by Nike and incorporated in several of their flagship athletic sports shoes. Shox is an array of small hollow columns in the midsoles of the shoe, usually of rubber. There are different formations, but Shox are usually four circular columns in a square formation to provide cushioning. There can also be five or six Shox, 25 mm high, though they may vary in height, and triangular and rectangular Shox that Nike says provide better stability. Some shoes have midsoles made entirely of Shox, like the TL series.
Nike claims that Shox not only absorb impact from heel strike while running, but also claims they "spring back" and add more power to a runner's stride. Aside from this alleged boost in speed, the Shox is supposed to provide superior shock absorption with high-tech elastic foam.

Adidas springblade - Aug 2013
What is it? An midsole/outsole made up of 16 high-grade polymer blades, forgoing any sort of traditional foam-based midsole compound. Each blade features a slightly different width and angle, resulting in an individually tuned configuration. Currently, it has only been applied to the SpringBlade running model.
How does it work? SpringBlade technology quite literally functions much like a spring. The idea is to provide a high amount of energy return, giving runners an extra push forward as they complete their stride. As soon as the foot strikes the ground, the blades compress, quickly releasing spring-like energy as the gait cycle finishes. While foam compounds only rebound in a vertical direction, the angled blades in SpringBlade technology offer multidirectional responsiveness and support.

YO! based on your great feedback in the comments I decided to do a PART 2 of this video! it is linked in the description, enjoy!
Hes Kicks yooohoooooo
Hes Kicks I don't see the link
Hes Kicks 7
I tried the adidas spring blade like a year after they came out and they were really good at first but after a year they got really squeaky
The biggest sucks is to step into a dog shit with the spring boost.:)))
Water soluble... Wait you want your shoes to dissolve in rain 😂
marcus griffiths I think he meant water resistant lol
Hahaha
AhaHHaHhaA
@@appatight Which would be the exact opposite of water soluble...
The Wicked Witch of the West shoes...
I remember when I was in like 5th grade if you have zigtechs you were the coolest kid in school.
Same
nah, north east
I was just thinking that and I’m from Ontario lol
The memories also those adidas indoor soccer shoes for were I’m from
Yeah I was just thinking about this! Those shoes were the shit in elementary school.
The Springblades were trash on wet surfaces. You wore these in the rain and were liable to do the James Brown splits or an MJ 360 spin, depending on how fast you could recover your balance.
You really need to pamper those shoes or else they giveup pretty soon .
lol
and you can’t forget when you got in any kind of mud or dirt... lodged up in the blades instantly.
XD so funny man btw nobody else like this comment it has the perfect amt of likes
SpideySensei72 I had that same problem🤣
I remember I always looked down at my shox to see if the springs were compressing
Shox are back, baby. I wish Nike would retro the VC line. VC 1-3 guaranteed cop.
@Keyboard Legend I still have an OG pair of VC 1s
Not too sure where you are but here in the UK they've bought the shocks back out now, the mega boings (all rounders) and the standard ones (heel shocks)
Shox are nasty they look like grandpa shoes
Shox look like heels for men, BAWHAHA!!
Zigtecs were the shit in my elementary school
Same. And they were comfortable too.
Middle school for me
I still have a pair that I use to work out in

Omg I remember the Adidas spring blade. Wow life's quick
The springblades were so bad and the blade fell off the shoe on mine

Hes Kicks did you ever own jordans as a kid remember waiting for the new color to come out so you can get the old color on sale remember the low tops were last ones to come out this way b4 the jordans were numbered this video remind me of the good old days I just turned 31 I think we around same age
The Reebox zigzag shoes are super comfortable. This coming from someone who has had 2 knee and 2 back surgeries.
Candice akinsanya
Lol I had a pair. I though they were super dope
yeah, his list is trash
The Zigs were the best shoes for people who worked on their feet. My job was very physical. Almost like playing a sport every day. I had feet and heel pain a lot and that pain went away almost instantly when I started wearing Zigs.
still wear zigs, on my 5th pair in almost 8 years
they brought a update kinetic
I work at an Amazon warehouse, and the Zigtechs are great for standing for long periods of time, really comfy.
I've heard a tonne of people say that, as well! They say it's great for physical works
I've heard a tonne of people say that, as well! They say it's great for physical works
I had Zigtech Nanos when I worked at Walmart. They were quite comfortable..
recently got myself a pair of zig kinetica II's very comfy as well!
i agree i have reebok ZigWild Trail 6 and theyre amazing. very water resistant, comfy and durable
You can't jump with the springblade... It hurts ALOT
Why is that?
Might just be the older versions but I remember I could feel it in my bones when jumping vertically. I switched to something with more foam/rubber soon after. It worked well for forward propulsion but there really wasn't a noticeable improvement over other cushioning systems. Also, I remember I could only use it on hard surfaces like asphalt (or dirt/mud/grass would get stuck in the blades), and because of that the plastic blades would get scuffed up and sharpen, making them hurt for other reasons...
saw the springblade in store, my reaction was "wtf, dat stuff is doomed"
I HAVE THOSE SPRINGBLADE AND FACTS WHEN U JUMP ITS HURT ALOT THAN YOU EXPECT
AND MY SPRINGBLADE BROKE SO EHH
A lot*
The video starts at 1:19
Thanks
This shitty rambling stuff makes me fucking sick
God bless you young child
And now the Nike shox is back 😂
the TL ones are really popular in germany tho
“This was a great shoe, they were going for innovation and a new design. It looked great, I actually bought a pair. This shoe is still being made with a newer design...
That’s why I think it is a top fail”
Well... okay.
The zigtechs were some of the coolest shoes when I was a kid. They were and still are some of the most comfortable shoes that I've worn.
GetZeroed .
Same. Im 19 now but I remember I wore 3 different pairs of zigtechs over the span of like 5+ years
When you were a kid? what are you 12 years old?
Zigtechs were the best, I loved mine.
Dude, we're in 2018. Those shoes were released in 2011. I got those too when I was 11, now I'm 18.
Ohhh ... I remember those Nike Shox !
Every cool teenager had them, and I wanted to be a cool kid too, so I bought fake cheap ones made in Morocco ...
And those red plastic springs exploded in less than a month.
haha! i had fake ones too but I got them from ebay and didnt know they were fake, i was so letdown!
I have a pair of Shox that are a couple of years old and they're no different than they used to be. They look exactly the same. They're not the new Gravity ones. And I didn't get them resold or anything, direct from Nike. I wouldn't exactly call that "failed."
Ma'am, do you often find yourself suffering from hunger? Just curious.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
I'm originally from Morocco never buy stuff from there it's just so fake
Spring blades on ultra boost
HUMAN s shut up and take my money
And they get off white version

Well the shox is now back in every shop there is now lol
Lets admit one thing. Everyone had those Reebok zigs

@@EliteOnTheBeat beat me to it 😂
Hes Kicks 2 mil
I insisted to my mom that i needed zig techs in grade 3. when i finally got the black blue and lime pair i loved them and they were very comfortable
I remember those spring blades that’s all I wanted when I was younger but I wasn’t allowed to get it
The Springblades blew up in Brazil and people still rock them to this date. They sold for more than the ultraboost too for the longest time.
And yeah, they're terrible for running. If you tried to do any sort of long distance running on them, not only it was extremely uncomfortable, the blades broke off in weeks of moderate usage.
Gustavo Costa crazy! They looked so interesting it’s funny how fast things fall off
Nike shox same
I really liked my spring blades as head turners in high school, but they were difficult to actually use because you were so high off the ground. Also, you lacked any stability if you did not land directly level on the shoe bottoms.
I don't think you were getting looks for a good reason
Actually I went to a private school with a dress code, so unique sneakers were a way to get around the dress code.
When I wore them, it felt like the blades were gonna come off any second
commanderschonberg very good insight!👍🏼
My springblades had issues, the plastic top part that the laces went through cut into my foot every time. Then the front section of the plastic "spring' assembly came unglued on one, then half of all of the rubber pads kept coming halfway off and tripping me.
Had a couple good runs in them, but felt way unstable with lateral movement.
I had those exact green zigtechs in grade 4. Super comfy, compliments from every possible girl in existence, and they obviously made me run SUPER DUPER FAST
Had a pair of Zigs when they came out in 2010. Absolutely loved the shoes, they are definitely nicer to run in than normal running shoes. Comfy and unique looking. Bought a new pair of the Zigwild Trail 6's, will report on those after a month or so of running.
Haha. I just bought a pair as well
@@culichi0776Def worth the monies
If they were "not water soluble," that is a good thing lol
lol i mean were ha, i cant find anything to backup the claim tho, I just remember hearing about it in Beaverton.
Hes Kicks No i figured you meant that man. Just giving you a hard time. Ha
The last thing you would need are shoes that dissolve when they get wet...
I had a pair of Adidas springblades. I remember that the durability of the blades was not very good. The rubber fell of the bottom of them after 3 months and the plastic was very slippery and resulted in me twisting my ankle numerous times. I honestly like the way the shoe looked and the concept of it but the execution of the idea was very poor.
Video starts 1:15 thank me later
Thx
Thx 2
Thx 3
Thx 4
Actually 1:19
Springblade look like cochroach
The nike shock n the thumbnail gave me vietnam flashbacks
TheTURDtool lol I’m dead
Zig tech had clout in middle school
Probably the best shoe on the market at the time for athletes besides basketball
This is a great channel. Sorry it’s taken me so long to find it. Thanks and keep up the great work.
I loved the Springblade, I bought a second pair after my first broke at the middle. The second pair also broke at the middle. That was it's only flaw for me. The newer ones fixed this by making the shoe half regular and half blades.
You forgot shape-ups😂
Jacob smith oh my God, that was a hell of an era
Remember Heelys from like early 2000s i went to school almost everyone hade them
actually heelys and shape ups still sell incredibly well lol
Jacob smith what about them?
by kim kardashian..lol
Bro the zigtechs were the shit especially the high tops
Ooooo baby I can still remember walking into school freshman year with my brand new John Walls
I had a pair of spring blades they were dope for awhile but the blades broke off after a few months and mud got stuck in the blades but they were my first "cool" shoe that got me into the sneaker culture
...I still wear my springblades
SimmonSays roses are red nuts are brown skirts go up pants go down body to body skin to skin when it’s stiff stick it in the longer it’s in the Stronger it’s gets it goes in dry and comes out wet it comes out dripping and starts to sag it’s not what you think it’s a teabag
good for you dude.
I have two pair that survived the delamination issues the first version had.
The 2nd version with the half blade sole are the ones that don’t delaminate.
I got my foot caught a lot with mine lol
@Φιλιππος Βρεντζος florescent
Zigs are one of the comfiest shoes I’ve had. Might even get a new pair from Reebok’s site.
I loved my shox...they looked so cool. I don't remember if they were comfortable or not, though lol
I remember being in 2nd grade and having those Nike SHOX, I only got them because I thought I could jump higher.
Same my parentes got them at a tad sale and told me I can jump higher now I’m in 8th grade 😂😂
Zigtech was actually a hit on a good chunk of runners.
I like the Adidas Springblade. I feel the difference in my knees - definitely a shock absorber. I've also taken then hiking and are pretty good on rough trails, but the knit upper gets dusty quick. They are my favorite pair. Although you're right, I get strange looks sometimes when I wear them and have been asked many times what brand they are because the 3 stripes are the same color as the rest of the shoe. The only logo is on the instep tape.
Your #2, the Reezig, reminds me of the On Clouds, but the On Clouds do not look weird or bulky to me, I think they look great in general
I'd have to say the Reebok Hexalite and ERS they used in the early 90's Pumps. Using your finger to push in on it was soft and cushy but it didn't translate to the heel one bit
Hes, please be the first show tuber to make a video comparing the Nike EpicReact to the Nike Lunar Epic 2. I think this would be cool because everybody is making videos comparing the EpicReacts to the Ultraboosts, but I think it would be really interesting for you to compare the EpicReact to its predecessor.
Ben Donaldson this is an awesome idea since the reacts are going to be replacing the lunar epics as well.
Miguel Salas thanks.
Failed Technology video...
Tells everyone about the new version of that old ‘failed’ technology...
It's a new version because they improved it therefore it's not the same thing. They changed it.
i had a pair of spring blades and they felt good walking in them but jumping hurt and the blades wore out easily.
can’t forget the dada spinner technology jk lol
lololol
300 Piglo Dada spinner technology?
ADP1998 you're too young to remember bruh

ADP1998 '94
Bitches still squeak lol
Ah I finally found your comment! Thanks again for the suggestion, I was happy to do this Top 5 vid last week!
I really liked the springblades. They were really comfortable overall. The first pair I had was the pair with blades only under the heel, and a regular toe. Those shoes I still wear to this day (although mostly for outdoors stuff). they never lost their grip (which is amazing because I used them for basketball both indoors and out.) and never fell apart. They are a really good long term shoe. However, after I stopped wearing these on a regular basis, I bought the pair with blades on the entire bottom, and the fabric/mesh upper. The rubber on these shoes didn't last even six months. I don't know what was the big difference but I was walking on plastic after like 5 months.
Cool vid! Brought me back in time a little bit. Super mad you put the Avia kicks on here 😩 I loved this. They worked (for a little while 😒) and I wished they was able to develop it more.
Salute to you for doing your own thing on CZcams. Glad you’re not including Hypebeast on your title
the best useless technology was the Reebok pump.😂
kris B they dope tho
The tennis version of the pump was superior to any tennis specific shoes back then. Nothing gave you as good lockdown.
Japanese people beg to differ. Still a popular shoe over there. It's probably the best tech for making a shoe easy to put on/take off.
Monk Killedababy i like em
kris B Dee Brown. Pump was successful.
I had that Converse React Juice back in 1993. It was my 1st dope bball shoe for training.
The springblades look sick but their not sick when you wear them.
Ikr I saw them and when those look fire
What about Karl Malone’s LA Gear Catapult haha
oh yeah haha classic!
I so wanted a pair of those but I could never find them.
excellent vid & funny edits bro, keep up the great work
6 ix thx!
I got Nike shox Gravity 2018 blacked out and I love them to run on concrete... definitely lovely cushioning.... but the best for me are Adidas NMD
Those springblades look scary. Like something straight out of a movie. That's wild.
how the fuck were nike shocks a fail
when for at least 5 years EVERYONE AND THEIR MOM had them
they literally sold a shit ton of them yes that is the right term
You forgot the Helium Tech from Converse.
I loved spring blades, I had a pair back in fourth grade. Although the pads on the blades did not last long a all, but in my opinion it was a pretty cool shoe. Loved the vid👌🏻🤙🏻
Cool. It's nice they keep experimenting.
Always love Top 5 Tuesdays! Just thought of this at the top of my head, how about top 5 pairs of shoes that were made in competition to the other. For example, BOOST was made, then the competitor would've been Nike's REACT
Springblades actually stood out when your in public but, it had lots of blades n grip that it squeaked everywhere and weren't that comfy.
I remembered having the Adidas Spring blade when I was a kid
The Zig Tech was the most comfortable shoe ever. I used to travel to races all over the country doing photography and walked about 10 miles a day on hard hot pavement, had to do a lot of standing around, and TONS of kneeling squatting behind pit walls. They stood up to the abuse really well and kept my feet comfortable for those long 15 hour work days. Really miss the zigs.
I used it for warehouse work - it was amazing and the new ones aren't the same
Every Gym teacher had a pair of Nike Shox
I really like the Reebok zigtech I have 10 pair they are really good for running and working out and they are durable as hell.
Yeah, but people wont be giving you attention for em. Personally, i like trendy shoes that still serve practical performance
10 pairs bro I think you don’t need 10 pairs of hey are durable you would probably need like 2 or 3 unless you’re collecting these shoes it just doesn’t make sense
Cool vid! Those Converse React Juice shoes brings back some memories, Lol! Probably the first really big name brand shoes I had. I ain't gonna lie growing up we never got the Champs, Foot Locker type shoes very often. Plus I was a huge LJ /Charlotte fan so that had to do with it to, Lol.
Great trip down memory lane 💪🏽❤️
I Can't Be the only one that remembers heleys, man they where the shit.
Lormo - ? They are still sold at the mall. Of course people remember heelys.
The Converse Tar Max with REACT and the Reebok Pumps were the runners over the early Jordan's. Still i remember my childhood in OZ where walking through footlocker you'd be amazed with them. I had a tar max btw and they were fire. Would love to see them retro'ed.
Tar Max was a great streetballer shoe.
The shoe store I work at actually carried Shox until just last year! I think there are still a few pairs in our clearance...
Dude I remember rockin a pair of black and like salmon colored zigtechs back in elementary school bro omg you brought back some big memories dude 😂😂
I had the spring blades I don't know if you will ever read this but when I was little I thought they looked awesome and when I put them on they actually felt springy now that I look back I agree they looked terrible but you must have to put them on to understand they were amazingly comfortable but one of the down sides was when you would run in the rain the water would kind of sometimes scoop up on you and another was minus was dirt got in those holes they got dirty really quickly I would still get them again if the lower was a little smaller but saying they are less than 60 bucks now I would totally get them
Loved my zig tech most comfortable shoes I ever owned. Wish they still made them.
I still got 2 pcs Spring Blade very good condition. Should I buy new shoes or still used these shoes? tqvm.
They've definitely improved on the shox tech I picked up a pair of r4s and they're very comfortable. Doesn't give you as much spring as you'd expect but comfortable and definitely better than the 2000 model nonetheless
Eh, I think the ZigTech was fine, but I see why John Wall didn’t like it, cause it doesn’t match basketball shoes
RKOlob ok pp old
Reebok Zigs were fire when I was in 3rd grade! I had a pair back in the day. 👌🔥😂
Ben B how old are you
I have the spring blade. I like the shock absorbing quality. Good for my knees.
Love my blades and shocks
Both comfortable
In Canada everyone had Zigtech😂
Mitchell Chick true
Yep
During my 8th grade year, all the "cool" kids has the Nike Shox. So many sports players had them as well
Also, I've seen so many friends get the Springblades, but the "blades" would snap and Adidas wouldn't replace them
Munchell360 really ? I own some spring blades and I did some pretty stupid stuff like ran 5k on them and other stuff like that
Oscar Gallegos Yeah, two friends back senior year of high school (2015) they both called Adidas, and Adidas refused to replace them
Munchell360 my dad and I bought a couple pairs. They snapped 3 days into having them. Kinda sucks
ScarED Did Adidas replace them?
even in the movie ELF the kid asked santa for some nike Shox lol
Reebok Hexalite (always popped cells on rocks), LA Gear Catapult, Reebok E.R.S., British Knights Dymacel.
The Power of Marketing, Advertisement and Placebo Effect 💪🏼🤙🏻👍
Does anyone remember what the adidas technology was that looked like a bunch of ƟƟƟƟƟƟƟ on the outsole
Aaron B mega bounce
Aaron B hell yeah the megabounce. I had a bright ass chrome pair and I stunted on everybody in 8th grade lol
Only bounce shoes I like are the Dames and the alphabounce
I still have my mega bounce
Joel Moya this was a different type of bounce that came out before the current version. This was during the 2000s, and I think when Kevin Garnett was with Adidas.
Hes Got The Best content man.
thanks for watching!
Spring blades like looked cool as hell, but they didn’t feel good and they got things stuck in them easily.
OML SKECHERS MADE A COPY OF THE SPRINGBLADE
I have a spring blade and it's very good!
Interesting video. I'd add the APL technology
I had a green sole pair of zig techs back in the day and was obsessed with them. They were a pretty different design for sure.
The nightcrawler and Netflix brought Avia back for a hot second again LOL
I had a pair of Zigtech, bloody comfortable.
I had shocks and zigtech. Neither felt any different from any other sneaker
I myself am a HUGE fan shox. I actually just got the gravity shox last night and I love them. Got triple black. First brand new pair.
I loved springblades they were unique and comfy but werent optimal for running i kept my white ones clean and want a new pair
