The sad and true reality of how vets are treated after serving their country. I see commercials on TV for Wounded Warriors and the like and wonder why the government isn't taking care of these guys who put their lives on the line. What a complete and total injustice. 😕

Literally was jaw-dropping, and that is why this monologue was so perfectly executed. Nobody saw it coming yet it changed everything in how people would look back at this movie. A powerful testimony for the pain that so many veterans suffer. They fought and suffered so hard just to get home, only to come back to a country that has turned their backs on them.

And I come back to the world and I see all those maggots at the airport, protesting me, spitting. Calling me baby killer and all kinds of vile crap! Who are they to protest me, huh? Who are they? Unless they've been me and been there and know what the hell they're yelling about!"
Fun Fact: The large piece of rotten canvas that Rambo finds in the woods and cuts into a makeshift coat was in fact not a movie prop, but a real piece of rotten canvas found by the film crew during the movie's production. Since there was only one piece, Sylvester Stallone joked about how the canvas became a treasured prop on the set. After filming ended, Stallone kept the rotten canvas and still has it in his possession to this very day.
Shout-Out Fact: According to Sylvester Stallone in the DVD commentary, the names of the people on Rambo's team in Vietnam (as read by Col. Trautman (Richard Crenna)) are actually names of various people of the film's crew, including make-up artist Michael Westmore and costume designer Tom Bronson.
Art Before Ego Fact: Sylvester Stallone hated the first cut of the film so much that he tried to buy the film back and destroy it. When he couldn't do that, he suggested that the producers cut much of his part and let the rest of the characters tell the story. That cut the movie time in half and set a precedent for future action movies.

This film, opens the eyes of the country to PTSD, and what these Vietnam veterans went through, not just over there, but when they came home, and they have been dealing with that every day since. Being a veteran myself, I have talked to Vietnam vets, and heard thier stories, I never interrupt them, I just let them talk, and let them get things out, I have heard plenty of stories, some, I wouldnt want to have lived through or even want to deal with, but these poor guys have to on a daily basis, our treatment and mental health awareness has come pretty far since those days, but it's still, not enough, we ALL need that help and support, God bless every man, woman, who has worn the uniform, served our country and done the duty that was and is asked of them, thank you for the reaction and I am glad you were aware of the trauma, have seen others react to this one, and they wanted to poke fun, and find it amusing, soooo wrong!!!...take care.

Another cool movie and reaction!! A bit of context first, this movie was a commentary on the treatment of our returning Vets from Vietnam, who were fighting a harsh, barbaric, and unpopular war. For reasons too complex to get into here, but essentially the US was fighting a very covert, hidden, stealthy, and well organized enemy in Vietnam who would often use and hide amongst civilians, often pitting our soldiers against these civilians, hence at the end when Rambo says when he returned home they (our civilians) were spitting on him and calling him babykiller. Many returning Vets found it difficult to adjust back to civilian life and sadly, were seen as dregs of society, men without honor. Very embarrassing time in our history.

    10/10
    First Blood (1982)
I, like many, have probably grown up with Rambo being a part of popular culture. From all those references to such an iconic character I was expecting some war film centered around an unstoppable killing machine. I was completely wrong, and thankfully so. Rambo is the story of a dark and troubled man. Rambo isn't a hero, but he should have been. He's a man that came home with no one to welcome him. He drifts from town to town, antagonised wherever he goes. One day a police force pushes him too far. Rambo's mental instabilities take hold and he pledges a war against these men in authority. There are no clearcut villains, and certainly no heroes here. We empathise with Rambo, and understand the police action taken against him. As well as being a commentary on the treatment of Vietnam Vets, it also shows how war isn't an excuse for such violent actions. Dennehy's wonderful character is shown (very subtly) as a soldier that managed to find his path. At the same time Dennehy doesn't know when to quit, his pride getting in the way. This is an action film with real substance, real issues, and real discussions to be had. It also never fails to deliver on the action, and Stallone's final emotional breakdown will relate to anyone that's been pushed too far. A film focused mostly on understanding, not excusing. I regret waiting this long to watch it.

  • @Cbricklyne

Just a fair warning that the rest of the sequels are not like this.
After this movie they took the sequels more in an "action-hero" direction, and that can either be a good or bad thing depending on your taste and preferences.
The last two though, were a bit more closer to the original in terms of having more dramatic pathos, but still leaning very heavily on (violent) action.
In my opinion, this was the best one because it showcased Stallone's acting skills - especially in a role where he had such few lines - over an action hero type, which became more of the defining role of later on in his career.
He's actually a pretty good actor (And writer) and you should also check out Copland (Which he wrote and directed, I believe) and which has a whole bunch of your favorite Mob/Mafia movie regulars like Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel.

Great reaction. The second film (Rambo: First Blood Part 2) was a massive hit which turned the character into a shallow, indestructible cartoon, completely overshadowing the first film which was actually pretty quiet and thoughtful for the first half...and the scene where he breaks down crying at the end is truly heartbreaking. It was based on a novel of the same name, although in the book he dies at the end.

Smart decision to have this monologue. As much as it would’ve been poetic for Rambo to die like in the book. This sends a stronger message. There are veterans who are still amongst us who have yet to receive the love and support they need to move on. Many of them are still contemplating suicide.
But as long as they are still with us, back home and alive. It’s never too late to show them the love they need. That we as a nation do truly appreciate their sacrifices.

At the end you need to learn more about engagement tactics. Gas station was a diversion to spread out the police. 2nd electric to hide movements, 3rd gun store another diversion to get that big cop to show himself. Last but not least he is isolated so engage. Even in the woods he had good tactics. Now they had wounded to deal with and get out. Giving him lots of time for escape. But guys of this time of his statue were trained not to run but engage.

    • @revdto
      @revdto Před 3 měsíci

There's even more to his tactics. To him, the town was a war zone, as you observed. So he takes out the gas station and cars first so that hampers the enemy movements. Takes out the power so the enemy has to operate in the dark. Takes out the gun store so that the access to weapons and ammo would be gone. Also, anyone who says Stallone can't act needs to see the final four minutes of this film. Sly was amazing with that speech. Great reaction.

And the public forming their opinions and views from what they seen on TV. Also because we withdrew and didn’t actually win the war public opinion wasn’t great. So sad because most vets were drafted and sent against their will.

This movie reiterates a common _notion_ about the Vietnam War that's wholly _false;_ that US civilians had a problem with our _troops._
But this was a key trait that differentiated the Vietnam War from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were fought entirely with _volunteers._ The Vietnam War had to use _conscripts._
Now why does a country use conscription in a time of war? To give its citizens an especially _personal_ reason to monitor what's going on with the _war_ they're funding. Consent of the governed is a _fundamental pillar_ of democracy. This is something they teach in _every_ High School American Government class.
Now one of our _biggest objections_ to the war in Vietnam is that it kept young Americans away from home, _against their will,_ and sometimes got them _killed_ and it had no end in _sight._
Now who should be _more_ opposed to a war than the people who have to personally go and _fight_ it? Am I really supposed to believe that our troops, deployed to Vietnam, _wanted_ to be there? It was a _war_ zone. Isn't war pretty universally _hell?_ No. Our troops wanted to come _home_ because it was _home._
And that was what the protests, back in the States, were all _about._ "End the war. Bring our boys home." That was the mentality.
So if our _troops_ objected, and our _population_ objected, why should the two be at _odds?_

Its interesting seeing people's differing reactions to this movie but I always wonder why some of ya'll actually don't get so moved to the point that you cry. Like what did you go through that made you this stoic ?

I wished they had fleshed out the cops story a bit more in the movie like the book this is based on. In the book the cop was in the Korean War and had issues of his own as opposed to a small town cop on a power trip.

Stallones true accent is South Philly .There’s a very good action comedy with Stallone and Kurt Russell,it’s called Tango and Cash, it’s really great. Lots of laughs and lots of action.
