    For anybody confused about what is meant when the gentleman says he has a 100% handicap at 39:37. It's reference to the fact that he is burdened with his handicap for the remainder of his life. It is not referencing the severity of his handicap as a percentage. "100% handicap" should have been translated to "permanent" or "life long" handicap as this would have better represented the intended context of what the guy said. Different languages use different idioms and the context of this one was just poorly translated

      its very difficult to get 100%- For Example, for 2 damaged (useless) knees you get 30%

      im a military veteran with multiple disabilities. im currently in court fighting the VA for my disabilities. my knee, which causes me to fall on average once a month (causing injury) is only 10% according to the VA. i also have back, shoulder, and ankle problems FROM the knee being bad. and they are saying my PTSD is simply anxiety. i wish the US would look at disability the way the rest of the world did. there'd be a lot less veteran suicides....................... (hundreds and hundreds per year)

      Sorry, but you've got it wrong.
      First, the proper English term is disability.
      To qualify for any government support, this disability has to be of a permanent nature.
      Next comes the severity of ones disability, expressed in percentage points.
      This is most crucial, since it determines the level of support one is entitled to.
      100% is the highest level possible in Germany.

      it means he's 100% disabled for work probably, disability ratings affect compensation so they are usually tied to ability to work and support yourself.

    As a retired firefighter, I have seen more than my share of deaths from fire accidents and a few train accidents. But I feel blessed to have never had to deal with train crashes involving multiple cars. I also hope and pray that these firefighters police and paramedics had people to talk to. For Myself fellow firefighters were my saving angels.

      when i was stationed in germany, i witnessed a motorcycle hydroplane in rain and go under a tractor/trailer/lorry, and was killed. it was a horrible event, and we stopped to talk to the polizei when they got there to describe what we had seen. in my military life and post-military life, i've seen a lot of blood from accidents. and that motorcycle rider was the worst. i won't describe it but it's enough to get a video banned on youtube for sure. i cannot imagine what actual EMTs and other emergency responders see. i mean, i CAN, since im familiar with their line of work (dad and grampa were firefighters) but actually seeing it up front, something i have not witnessed. those first responders are simply amazing people, handling the stress and still working to fix it.

      I can tell you the ICE trains are much safer because of this accident and trains are now jointed with single bogues holding up two train carragies prevents them from knife edging into each other like it it did in this crash!

    This is so sad for everyone. My heart and prayers go out to everyone involved.
    I was stationed in Germany, back when there was still an East and West Germany. The people there were some of the nicest and caring people I've ever met. ❤

      Yeah my father was stationed in Munchweiller pirmasens in the 80's and we were annexed right next to what we called german town and all I remember is how friendly the people were

      i was at Ramstein in the late 90s early 2000s. fantastic people. beautiful neighborhoods. wonderful markets and villages. i have huge respect for the german people

    On Friday 18th July 1997, I rode the Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen ICE train from Munich Hbf to Hamburg Hbf. At the time, I had no idea that months later, that the bogies of that same exact train, would crack, poke through the compartment floor, and completely derail that train. I consider myself fortunate that on 3rd June 1998, that I was at work, in Munich, with no intention to travel that day.
    This year I rode the ICE from Hannover to Hamburg, through Eschede, and felt relieved when the train left Eschede. While there, I thought of the people who were not so lucky from so many years ago. Although I was not part of the actual derailment, I feel I could have been involved in that same incident in July 1997.

      Last year I took an ICE train from Munchen to Hannover. I wasn’t gonna pass Eschede but nonetheless, our train got stuck for two hours. Two trains ahead of us - an ICE train and an RE train - slightly collided against one another. They didn’t collide as much as scratch and scrape against one another. But this could’ve gotten so much worse.
      This line can’t catch a break 💀

    I heard about this on the news when this happened. I couldn't believe that a fatigue crack could cause an accident. The story was heartbreaking,

      Fatigue cracks have been responsible for a number of severe airplane accidents. They have occurred in plane bodies and engine components.

    They made a movie documentarty out of this which was so moving. To see/hear the story a man lie lightly injured beside his dead wife in one of the carriages, holding her hands still and not wanting to part, even when rescuers came for him. So sad. But it was heartwarming, how the little village of Eschede came together to help alive victims in the aftermath

    It angers me so much that no one was held responsible for the accident and the victims had to fight for compensation! But is´nt that typical? My heart goes out to all of them, its a real shame and adding to the already severe trauma. The memorial was beautiful and may these people never be forgotten. My thoughts is with the survivors and the victims families. ❤

    Like everything else, train wheels need to be tested under conditions more severe than it would ever normally encounter. Heavier weight, higher speed, longer run, environmental conditions from very cold to very hot. Thy are often tested in laboratories. You don't just put something you think will work, then hope for the best.

      They paid lots of restitution to families of victims, however a life lost cannot really be weighed up against a pile of money

      I think it needs to be understood how much Germans love rules and order. If the orders were to notify someone then that was what they would do because they trusted that these things had been tested and failsafes had been applied, since 9.9 times out of 10 they are, Germans love testing things 100 times over. This 'mistake' was clearly a side effect of DeutscheBahn not testing something properly and nothing any passenger or ticket officer could have done would have helped this.

    Heartbreaking. The trauma was widespread, to the survivors, the families of all the passengers and the responders / medical personnel. The pain for these people is incomprehensible. The saddest of all is that those responsible were not held accountable. The legal system failed. Those who promised to compensate victims did not, or begrudgingly dragged out payments.

    This is an absolutely tragic accident and ofc ppl will forever say "I would have" - it's very easy to say those things after the fact, but we don't know how we'll act in the moment until we're actually in that situation ourselves.
    As much as I want to say that I would have pulled the emergency brake as soon as I saw something pierce the bottom of the carriage between my feet, I haven't actually heard if that was an option. I know after the Gare de Lyon accident in France, some trains were redesigned so that passengers couldn't pull the emergency brake anymore. So the passenger may have had to get a conductor/security officer to pull it. Or maybe they could have pulled it themselves. I've never been to Germany, let alone been on their high speed trains, so I don't know what the situation with the emergency brake was.

    This might sound terrible but if that wheel rim that shot up into the coach would have impaled the passenger rather than just the seat someone would have most certainly pulled the emergency stop before the crash.

    4:32 Slight inaccuracy here. Jörg and his family were seated in a compartment, not in the main cabin.
    EDIT: Also the restaurant coach (The one with the taller roof) as depicted in the animation at the 5:00 minute mark is in the wrong place. It is depicted as being coach 9 instead of coach 6. Although I will give it to the animators that the crash animation is much better and accurate than others I have seen, which either have an incorrect number of coaches, to one animation showing no rear power car and depicting coach 2 being crushed and the rest following after.

    The owners of the train should compensate the passengers, families, and all those who lost someone or were injured in this crash. It's only fair these people will suffer for the rest of their lives, either from the loss, injury, both physical and mental issues.
    Even though money or other compensation won't bring back the people and lives that were impacted by the crash, they deserve something to make their lives easier.
    Prayers and condolences to every one effected by this crash.

    40:07 that’s beautiful, even if you’re not religious, you are still welcome to remember and reflect on this tragic accident, this NEGLIGENT accident. However, the steep stairs at the memorial aren’t very accessible, especially to those survivors who have lasting mobility issues and disabilities which doesn’t seem to make sense

    Japan: Invents high speed rail, comemorates 60 years of it with never having an accident related death (one person ever died in one Shinkansen .. it was a suicide, the man put fire on himself on the train).
    Germany: starts 30 years later with slower trains, manages to have the most catastrophic high-speed train in History in only 7 years of service.

    A similar accident occurred in Granville, Sydney NSW Australia but it technically wasn’t a high speed train. The train was travelling too fast after descending the Blue Mountains and came around a bend too fast, striking a bridge which brought it down on top of the train killing many passengers. It was one of Australia’s worst rail disasters and lead to many changes to construction and maintenance of railways in Australia and around the world.

    Two different stories even now. Narrator said 5th car back end was crushed, and the 6th the dining car was completely crushed. Then the fire chief said back of 3 rd hits the bridge, 4 th shot through and the 5th was completely crushed. 😢😮???? 3 back end hit, 4 th shot through, and back end of 5th and 6th crushed.

    Here in the USA the DB would have had to pay millions of dollars to the relatives of the dead and the injured and rightly so. Unfortunately Germany is not set up to compensate victims like this. For example the guy who still to this day is in pain and is 100% disabled would not only have gotten millions but also money for suffering and losing the ability to work and what he has lost in salary or wages.

    Down history once bridges, railroads and locomotives ruled travel, there has been many other catastrophic train wreck accidents. Notably all due to speed and curves and derailment.

      If someone pulled the emergency stop, the derailment would not happen, and nobody would even know a derailment was averted. But if the stopped train gets rear ended by a following train, this person who pulled the emergency stop would be blamed. This is why nobody wants to do it.

    Impossible to watch, every 2-5 min an add... If you have the phone a little far, you enjoy the adds instead of the video (yeah, you do not skip it coz you can't reach it and the add is 2-3min, like the time of video without adds)

    I wonder if the real issue (after the lack of testing) should be a train should be able to survive a wheel failure. I'd think this is a risk that always exists and should be survivable. Maybe a guard around the wheel that redirects debris out, away from the train.
    33:25 A lot of things happened here that required the worst possible exceptional circumstances. The geometry of the failure had to be such that debris hit the tracks like a lever, the debris had to hit at just the right moment and right where a track switch was, the track switch had to be right in front of a bridge.

    I am metallurgical engineer. I can say that separate rim and rubber padding over the solid wheel was OK for low speed team cars. But for 200 kmh train that wheel was foolish decision. Rubber layer between rim and solid wheel caused death and destruction. Germans wanted to boast in their ice glass of wine will not shake at 200kmh.why go for such things most important is SAFETY of the Passengers.

      And thats correct, DB uses resilient wheels instead of beter bogie suspension on the ICE 1s and obviously resilient wheels dont age well on highspeed operation

    %100 of the blame is on the route attendant that did not immediately stop the train after the frickin wheel rim impales the floor, a seat, an armrest, and almost a passenger.. You pull that stupid cable on the wall, folks. This incident is exactly what the emergency stop cables are there for ya'll. As soon as the conductor would have done visual walk, discovery the obvious problem would have ended the doomed trip. I'm sure the families of the victims were furious after the train conductors were let off. Maybe if the conductor sustained a single injury from the crash there would have been an ounce of justice. They wouldn't even help the survivors either. Gross

      "They wouldnt even help the survivors either". Not true. Deutsche Bahn paid out lots of restitution to victims and victims families. And they didnt try to cover up or fail to act, they completely changed the wheel and the procedures, so it couldnt happen again.
      Its easy to cast blame, and yes, they are to blame for changing the type of wheels without doing the simulations to consider the consequences. But they did step up after the accident. And that includes orders to conductors to pull that emergency brake.

    Europe's harsh accident laws discourage people from coming out openly after an accident. These systems are complex and fragile and you'll never have them accident free.
    It is amazing how the accident happened at the worst possible place at a very bad location on the train.

    God Bless All those on that Train...remember when it happened..so sad.......But can not even imagine why there has not been more
    when speeding along at those speeds on two thin metal rails just a matter of time...
    But then over there their rail systems are some better than here in states, were the are deplorable at best...so outdated
    with no upkeep..............BUT this has to Be The Most Complete Report On THis I have Ever Seen...........Thanks

      It's not "just a matter of time" thanks to all the safety features of modern railway systems. Similar to how flying appears dangerous of you give it a surface look (a metal tube with flexible wings, hurling through thin air at close to the speed of sound), but is in fact the safest method to travel because of all the active safety measures.

    WTF The entire mass of the train on such a rubberised design is beyond belief TUV home of the testing houses too, I think "German engineering is best" tried to do a face-saving exercise and escape blame, this was an unmitigated disaster and formed the best chapter in the idiots' engineering handbook's guide, along with chapters on cockpit avionics design, industrial control system's, precast RAAC concrete etc... It also begs the question -- WHAT DO THE JAPANESE DO/USE ???????!! I can't remember a similar event in Japan prior to this disaster? My brother married a lady from Celle ..

      I wonder if DB tried to do the "cheap way out" in trying to smooth out the ride of the original ICE 1 train sets by going to this wheel design instead of re-engineering the train suspension system to smooth out the ride regardless of wheel design. As such, the later ICE train sets such as the Siemens ICE 3 _Velaro_ train sets stayed with monoblock train wheels but with much improved suspension design to reduce vibration at high speed.

These trains are made to make money and that's it… From the designers they get paid to the construction of the train that gets paid everybody gets paid except us. We pay them which is the goal to rake in huge profits and to become rich which they do… Until this happens and then is just the cost of doing business. The designer of the wheel did he go to prison? It doesn't matter they're too fast and there's no safety built in anywhere these cars will collapse like an accordion with you in it for any kind of crash. I wonder if there will ever be safety first in anything that mankind does because I've never seen it. Your life is not worth any of these things
