Tears of the Kingdom has been getting rave reviews from just about every outlet under the sun. This isn't a surprise considering the game is really really good. Might even be the best zelda game, and is certainly in contention for the best Switch exclusive. BUT it isn't good enough, this video is about why.

Do you know what’s wild? My wife and I have separate switches, and have been playing TOTk together (at different paces) and I saw all of the Tears out of order. My wife on the otherhand, saw the wall murals in the Forgotten Temple and noticed that the memories are actually laid out in order, and then proceeded to adventure around, watching the Tears in the proper order! I was amazed as I didn’t even know they were listed in such a way but she noticed it and committed to watching them chronologically! So it is possible!!!

@@DanielMazahreh i love the "you're not good" argument when you've never seen me play.
The fact that i consider it not to work good has nothing to do with my level as a player, it's just a fallacious argument.
I'm perfectly able to distinguish a mechanic that is working fine from one i estimate not to be working the way it should.
I have, on several occasions, seen that when I wanted to make use of a power, the NPC was running away from me as i came to him. I have tried it in many situations in order to be certain that it was not my imagination, and my conclusion through observation is that the companions try to stay at a certain distance from link (probably because the developers didn't want them to be packed around link).
Now if you estimate the mechanic is working fine, you perfectly have the right to, but please don't use the "you're bad, get good" shit with me, that's just stupid.
If you want to debate on the mechanic, fine. But use proper arguments.
If you think i'm wrong, fine, i actually don't care.
But you're answer is just straight stupid, sorry.
PS : if that REALLY matters, i've finished the game without any trouble, and i've never really "needed" the powers. This is precisely why i think the system doesn't work well : on the few occasions i've wanted to use them, the NPC ran away from me and i ended up solving the situation without using them. I think the mechanic doesn't work on some occasions (especially fights) because if you can't use the powers on the occasions you want to, then the message the game sends you is more or less "nah, don't use the powers", and it is always a bad thing when, for some reason, the game doesn't let you use the mechanic it has implemented for you.
Now that this is said, i admit that outside of fights, it works quite fine.

A lot of people seem to not realize that the game gives you the order of the memories, however like you said they are more likely to find the other memories first.
To see them in order the first memory is in front of the stable and impa is there. The game gives you a linear direction by telling you to head to rito village so it’s likely you will encounter this first memory. After seeing this at some point impa tells you to head to the forgotten temple where you enter this room that shows you the glyphs and their order to watch it. They even lay out a map of hyrule for you at the bottom where the Glyphs are located and the glyph order on the wall. By studying the glyph shapes and seeing them on the map you can you can determine which one is supposed to be next.
But the problem is is that most people are not gonna follow the linear path nor would they think to do this quest.

The thing is, that room in the Forgotten Temple is like a puzzle. And like most puzzles, some people will pick up on it right away, while others might not even realize there is a puzzle to be solved and just leave after marking their map with the tear locations. People aren't necessarily stupid for not noticing that, and really shouldn't be punished because the game let them leave the temple thinking they did what they needed to.
And that's not to mention the fact that the game actively encourages players to forget about quest markers and just follow where the wind takes them. The big appeal of BotW and TotK is the openness of it all, the ability to do just about everything in any order. For all the game knows, the player might find any or all of the tears without ever going to the Forgotten Temple, never even getting the CHANCE to figure out the chronological order. They might see things in the wrong order just for playing the game they way they want, which players are actively encouraged to do in these games.
I think the simplest solution would be that after you find a tear, you get a textbox saying:
"Memory #6 has been added to the Purah Pad. What will you do?"
      >Watch now
      Watch later
That way you can just be like, 'Well, I haven't seen memories 1-5 yet, so I guess I'll just watch this later.' So you can pick them up in any order and just watch them in the Purah Pad after you've found all the preceding ones. Now people are far less likely to watch them out of order accidentally.
Of course none of this would fix the other issues with the story, like Link never saying anything to anyone else about the memories during the main story quests 'cause the game doesn't take into account which ones you've seen at any point. Honestly, being able to see memories out of order doesn't even bother me that much, I'm more concerned about the complete disconnect between the memories and the main storyline.
I feel like Tears of the Kingdom has one of the best stories in the whole series, but it just couldn't be told well with the completely open structure of these games. It would have worked so much better in a more linear game where the writers could more easily control what information was given when.
Sorry for the text dump, lol.

I was kinda surprised to see all the Champions' weapons being used by the Sages in the cutscenes. On top of that and the Divine Beasts being just gone with no explanation, and the Champions scarcely being mentioned, and their weapons in the modern day being remade by just anybody (looking at the Boulder Breaker), they feel...cheapened. Especially the Great Eagle Bow, which was literally made to LOOK LIKE Revali (dark blue with white accents, the tips splitting off into three "tufts" like his feathers did, the blue scarf, and the yellow bit being placed so it looks like a beak, so the bow itself looks like a stylized version of him). The only one that didn't feel cheapened was the Lightscale Trident, because Sidon, Mipha's brother, was the only one who used it. We got all this new Zonaite and Construct gear, but when it came to the ancient Sages, they had the exact same weapons that are being used in the modern day? Really?? Lazy design imo
Also the arrow fusing is SO annoying. Instead of the simplicity in BotW of having different arrow types, now I have to reload my arrows for every. Single. SHOT. Instead of just switching to one arrow type and spamming it. I spend more time in the fuse menu than I do in the actual combat situation ffs

I have three critiques about the world of ToTK:
    1. The emptier parts of Hyrule in BoTW like Akkala, The Gerudo Highlands, and The Faron Grasslands are still mostly empty in ToTK. Similar to how Kakariko Village has the Ring Ruins as new landmarks, I believe these emptier areas needed new points of interest.
    2. The Sky Islands feel more like an extension of the surface rather than it’s own world. I thought we were teased on The Great Sky Island that the sky was going to have its own biomes and ecosystems. I’d have more giant sky islands with more interesting shrine quests than simply bringing a crystal somewhere, and I’d expand the sky’s involvement in the story.
    3. The Depths was the most disappointing part of the game. The darkness could’ve created the most incredible sense of discovery ever, but the potential was missed out on. It’s also just one biome besides Death Mountain. I’d add more biomes and more interesting locations that aren’t just mines. Here’s a couple ideas:
    - Korok Forest could’ve been Skull Woods
    - Zora’s Domain could’ve had Swamp Palace
-Kakariko Village could’ve had the Yiga Clan’s base in The Depths

Your point about the non-linear storytelling is spot on. I think it’s a failure from the story writers’ perspective on recognizing the fundamental difference between Tears and BOTW: In the former, Link and Zelda are working together to achieve the same goal at two points in time. In the latter, we know from the very beginning where Zelda is and what she’s doing, and our task is to learn and understand who LINK is. In the second case, geographically triggered flashbacks made perfect sense, whereas the geoglyphs didn’t really serve any purpose except as a beacon of a dragon tear to be spotted from the sky.

I'll say it. I like Botw's storyline much better than TotK's. The narrative style has it's issues of 'course but I feel like it actually does work for the kind of game it is. Link being an amnesiac survivor trying to piece bits and pieces of who he used to be is compelling when you think about the kind of world we were meant to be experiencing for the first time. The story felt crafted to connect to the player in a new and intimate way, experiencing the same unfamiliar world alongside Link.
With Totk however, It feels like they couldn't figure out what they were doing. They had like, a few cool story beats and ideas but the inbetweens, like the memories and characters themselves felt so impersonable and somehow even more 2-demensional then Botw's. There's also just so, sooooo many holes in some of the narrative logic that made it much less compelling for me.
Something I also find really strange is that the game promotes player freedom but is also, and rather frustratingly, not designed to compensate the player should they find the memory that reveals Zelda's fate early on. The game won't allow Link to tell anyone this information, so the typical "Where is Zelda?" dialogue continues and it ends up creating an incredibly redundant experience if you want to finish visiting all the regions and completeing the other side adventures that also feature a 'Where is Zelda?' Segment. It feels like a huge oversight on Nintendo's part to have released it like this

The comparison between Link's close and unique relationships with the sages in Ocarina of Time and the cookie cutter nothing-relationships he has with the sages in Tears bothers me a lot. Saria was his childhood friend who cared deeply for him, and someone he had to leave behind and grow up. Princess Ruto was his supposed betrothed, who wants to keep the oath when they are adults. Nabooru was that sort of hot older woman you have a crush on when you're a child but then you grow up and become equals (she symbolizes the romantic aspects of growing up), Darunia had a sort of brotherly love with Link like an older brother, then Zelda...she was Link's equal, co-captains in the fight against Ganondorf and each the only person the other could truly understand. Voiced characters, anime-esque aesthetics, breakable weapons (as the standard), androgynous Link, a magical tablet eerily reminiscent of real-life computer tablets, inventory option-bloat (along with unnecessary HUD clutter), open world for the sake of open world...
Nintendo doesn't realize that too much is too much; people love to defecate on _The Adventure of Link_ because of its difficulty, but it managed to strike a nice balance between details of the world and gameplay despite its limitations. Here's to hoping that this franchise is reset back to its roots.

The issue with memories is that - like in BotW, they are clearly tied to certain locations. The entire system would have to be adjusted to make the memory hunt justified.
Which wouldn't be too hard. They could simply lock it behind the already-existing quest (the one which even shows you the correct order). And not spawn the pool of tears at a given location untill you unlock it.

The only "real" problem this game has is that the story moves differently than the world. You as a player could be steps ahead in story than anyone in the game world. It bugged me a bit that i found zelda but was not able to tell purah or any of the regions that phantom zelda is a fake. I get why they did it, they would have to make a lot of different versions of interactions. And locking a cutscene behind progression would fight against the openness of this game. But it still hurt the immersion a bit. Doesnt take away from it being an absolute masterpiece tho.

I was agreeing with pretty much everything you said, up until 9:00 when you said the memories in Tears were “so much better” than in BotW lol. Tears of the Kingdom is a phenomenal game that improves upon BotW in a ton of huge ways. The memories are not one of those improvements, in fact everything about them is a downgrade from BotW’s. The story is much more linear and that only hurts it when the player doesn’t view them in order, a problem that didn’t actually exist in BotW because they knew the memories would be seen out of order, so they wrote the story with that in mind. Even in the correct order, though, TotK gains nothing from this linearity.
Like BotW, the ultimate end result of the memories is known extremely early on, mostly before the first memory is even gathered, yet here several scenes serve only as build-up to this critical event that is already known. Memories that look cool, but don’t provide *any* meaningful new information are not good. For example, Ganondorf killing Sonia and taking her stone was shown in the opening mural. A cool scene shouldn’t be the only value in a memory. Similarly, a memory showing Ganondorf vowing fealty to the king of Hyrule and then the king and Zelda saying they think he has an evil plan doesn’t serve a purpose when we know what Ganondorf does afterwards.
The few memories that do provide important info completely clash with the active plot. The first found memory makes it extremely clear that Zelda is in the ancient past, but other characters are unable to acknowledge that until after the Regional Phenomena. The third found memory totally gives away the second important thing to happen to Zelda, and only two characters can ever acknowledge that (and only much, much later). Events seen in the memories don’t enhance or cooperate with the present day story, they actively spoil it.
In BotW, the memories are written in a way that works with the method of storytelling, gives each scene a purpose, and perfectly strengthens the plot, themes, and gameplay. BotW has a solid theme centered around the Calamity that destroyed Hyrule 100 years ago. The champion’s cutscenes make the loss of those champions feel real, and though the featured characters sometimes fall flat, conceptually the memories are perfect. Every other cutscene is focused on *link* and *zelda*. This is important because Link being present connects you to the memories, and every memory has value for Zelda’s character development and her relationship with Link. BotW’s memories give Zelda more depth and growth than any character in TotK could ever dream of. This also serves to reinforce your narrative motivation. While the whole world is filled with loss and grief, every ruin reminding you of your failure, the memories serve to remind you of what you *haven’t* lost. Everything is about Zelda, so of course that’s gonna make you want to go save Zelda from Ganon.
In TotK, once you figure out what happened to Zelda, which could easily be by Tear #3, it *weakens* the narrative motivation. With no hint that there’s anything you can do to reverse it, she is as good as lost. That goal driving you forward is gone. It doesn’t even serve some sort of desire for revenge, because Ganondorf didn’t directly cause what happened to her.
BotW still had cool scenes, important events, and new information in its memories, along with ***massively*** stronger character development than TotK, all in a story that smoothly works *with* the non-linear storytelling and time gap, rather than against it. Every part is intricately designed to feed into each other and tell a story with incredible, solid themes, growth, and a *purpose* . TotK tells a *cool* story and leaves all that out

Thank you for this comment! I’ve never been able to properly articulate why BoTW’s narrative worked so much better than TOTK but this perfectly explains why. BOTW is personal, you and Link woke up in a world you do not recognize, and learning about the life Link used to have pushes you to try to save what’s left after seeing the friends you have lost. TOTK’s narrative is much less compelling because you are watching visions that do not involve Link/the player. Memories also tend to be recollected out of order anyway. When seeing Zelda’s fate, there’s literally no reason to take down Ganondorf. Link should’ve been the one who was transported back to the past. Idk, i was really disappointed w the story but this long comment is just me expressing that I agree.

Why don’t white people season their food?
The age old question we have all asked, seriously or comedically. As with many culinary norms: it comes back to the French. French cuisine, and many styles that were heavily inspired by French cuisine, places a large focus on having food that tastes very singular. That is to say that food should taste of itself as intensely as possible: foods like meat served with a meat sauce reduced as much as possible so that it tastes very intensely of, well, meat. But for many cuisines the focus is different: layering many different flavor profiles to have a more complex taste. Scientists have even studied this phenomenon and found a similar divide, European cuisines tend to have ingredients that share similar chemical compounds that account for taste, that is to say that recipes include many ingredients that taste similar. Meanwhile, other cuisines tend to have recipes in which there is little overlap in chemical compounds, which is to say that recipes are designed to pack in many different flavors at once.
But why does European food do this when so many other cuisines don't? After all much of Europe was historically focused on increasing trade to increase their access to things like spices, why go to all that trouble just to end up not using them? As it turns out much of European cuisine did use spices in this way for a long time, but increasing access to them ended up making heavily spiced food less of a status symbol. The social elites of France no longer could be eating better food than everyone else simply by layering spices on, so the focus shifted elsewhere: to the most intense and singular flavors possible. The new line of thinking was that if status cannot be in the ingredients, it should then be in the preparation. Having well trained chefs who tried to formalize a theory of cooking became more vogue, the new method was to have a core flavor and trim the unnecessary fat. This style of cooking would frequently become highly labor intensive as work was put in to make the most intensely flavored food possible, such as a demi-glace which may take an entire day to make. Such laborious practices would solidify this cuisine as strictly for the elites.
One might ask why a French trend became the norm for much of Europe, and later the United States as well. The answer lies in the structure of French cuisine and the development of the modern restaurant. The modern restaurant originated in France, from royal cooks who found themselves out of work due to a failing monarchy and instead used their skills to offer the food of the royalty to the more common man. As we now know, this idea caught on and became quite popular, and the highly structured nature of French kitchens meant that working in such a restaurant was a great place to learn. As such, many aspiring chefs would travel to France to go apprentice in a kitchen to learn the trade before returning to their home country. When these chefs went to learn they not only learned culinary techniques and skills, but also concepts that were popular in French cuisine such as the notion of having very singularly flavored food. Ultimately a changing status symbol resulting from highly successful trade ended up rippling throughout the continent and affecting other regional cuisines in a way that perseveres even now, centuries later.

With the out-of-order-memory thing, it seems like TotK (I have not played the game, so, grab the entire salt shaker), the game tries really hard to make everything be open and non-linear and build-your-own-wayish. Having the memories unlock in a set order like you mentioned, regardless of their actual location, would go against that idea . . . even though it would absolutely be a better choice narratively. It being the way it actually is seems like a pretty arbitrary stylistic choice. (that's how I felt about BotW's memories, even though they were seemingly less important in that game)

I think alot of problems with TotK can be blamed on not powerful enough hardware. Yeah I think they could have done memories better. To be honest though I don't want to see an 'improvement' of memories, I'd prefer a better method of storytelling. Elden Ring managed to create a start-to-finish story that happens along with the player in real time. Yeah, it's very subtle because it's a souls game, but there's nothing stopping other games from telling a story in a similar way but less subtle. There's also nothing wrong with having the player progress from area to area as the story goes on, Elden Ring also managed to do that in an open world game, and if the players REALLY wanted to skip areas they could find an intended way to do so. I just don't see why nintendo is having such issues with story. A lot of people, you included state something like "you're not really picking a Zelda game up for the story" but that's kinda something I want out of Zelda games, I'm not sure why people keep saying that.

It's only all right when you're in a big field and there's nothing for the vehicle to get stuck on. If you get stuck in any small spaces, there ain't no way you can turn that thing around without jumping off and using ultrahand.
I wish devs would have given the "Press and hold whatever button while using reverse" instead of trying to put that function all on the one stick.
There's not a single video game (that I ever played) where this method of driving with all those functions in a single stick has ever worked very well at all.

First off overall this is a great game for the first 30-40 hrs which is plenty of time, but after playing this game fully -- i.e. completed depths, gotten all shrines, and still working on some quests. The biggest issue with this game is the repetitive combat and using the same overworld. Exploring feels like a chore towards the end when its on the same map. Caves don't remediate this feeling as they become repetitive after you've done 20-30 of them. The depths are all show and not much substance -- reskinned content, reskinned bosses, and a bunch of chests with mostly useless outfits. They really weren't worth all of the time I sunk in.
Other points: They didn't do enough with sky islands, probably 50% of the shrines are repetitive empty with a chest or have the dumb crystal transport mechanic, puzzles are circumvented by the OP build mechanic which gets old, Ultrahand is a cool mechanic but not sufficient enough to build a 100 hour game, we're still missing the real zelda dungeon/puzzle feeling merged into an open world, the overworld needs to be 30-40% the size of the current one for the next zelda game -- I would even be fine if the overworld was 10-20% the size of the current one but with full creative content, instead of drips of content spread throughout the oversized world in TOTK.

THE BIGGEST ISSUE = LINEAR DIFFICULTY WITH O SCALING. The game NEVER gets harder, because of the open ended way they wanted you to
do the game, everything is basically stuck deadfast at Tutorial level, and once you get any sort of gear or hearts its impossible to die.
Also bosses do 0 damage to you. Everything is just a big damage sponge that you spend half your inventory kiling.

I dont think its the best one. I think it clearly had the potential to be the best one but Nintendo did not stick the landing. What the zelda series needs is for miyamoto, koji kondo and tezuka to PUT A HAND or be given a little more power to say "this is stupid, fix it". Because there seems to be no shortage of instances where we hear aonuma and other nintendo EPD staff bitching and moaning about how tough and stressful it was to work under miyamoto and how unbending he was on his ideas, but the man's work was brilliant. Now they have the opportunity to do what they want and they give us this mess. So much potential to be so much more but the team seems to be struggling creatively to do it right. They desperately need that senior creative guidance.

In my opinion my problem with the game is that there's a huge world with nothing to do. Exploring is not fun if there's nothing to do in it. Shrines are fun, cave exploration is fun, but given that the world is huge you need to run for 10 minutes to find things to do and that part isn't fun.
It burns you out walking long distances to do ONE task which is the shrine or cave then walk forever again to do another task that leads to nowhere. Open worlds with no depth to them just sucks. If it was semi open world, or at least more shrunk, the game would be exactly the same.

Not to mention there's already an infinite amount of ways to break this game's combat system so I don't see a problem with these abilities being strong. Clunky controls should not be a limiting factor for an abilities effectiveness, that's just outright bad design.

@@feidamack2006 I think you are misconstruing what the OP meant. In terms of power/defensive ability, BOTW champion powers are definitely stronger initially, but you are missing the point here. In technicality, sage abilities would ironically be stronger because the gap between cooldowns and usage times are IMMENSE. Champion abilities were used roughly 3 times in one sitting, and the differing cooldowns were 3 to 10 mins. Sage abilities? Besides Mineru, it takes roughly 10 seconds for it to come back; if having all the sages on the field, the downtime between activating and waiting for the next sage ability will feel nonexistent if it was so easy. I don't have to explain why it would heavily outshine the champions, and being able to easily activate them would arguably trivialize combat and the environment.
I do agree with your perspective on how clunky the controls are, but there is also fair grounds on what I said in how easy activation can lead into being too overpowered.

It's an iterative process.

No need to defend it, the story is mid at best even if the sage cutscenes weren't half baked and the memories in chronological order, but the fact that albeit a simple story it still has these glaring issues just means that Nintendo didn't care at all about the quality and coherence of the narrative. Everything is happening at once making it so there is no story to follow unless you look ik up where you should go first and last.
i mean there is story but its all totally fragmented around the map.
a better soluction would be make an open world zelda game that indeed gives you the freedom to go anywhere you want but the story pieces should be set in stone so you dont end up at the end of the story and then work your way to the front to then end up in the middle of the story

    Spoiler warning...
Other than the problems you rightfully pointed out with this game my biggest complaints with the story is nothing really means anyting. Everything just goes back to normal at the end with no consequence or anyting that significantly changed, Link doesn't even have to face the reality of his arm no longer being his own at the end of the game. And it also feels as though Zelda gained nothing of value over all and was conveniently being removed from agency for a lengthy period of time. she didn't even get any cool abilities for being turned into a dragon, at least Links arm allowed him powers he didn't have access to originally that you actually get to control. I feel that Zelda being turned into a dragon added nothing useful to the experience... you can even pull the Master sword from her head without ever finding any other memories and that to me personally is very bad game design. I do love this game and I enjoyed my time with it but I feel like I'd be doing a disservice if I didn't mention some of the problems I experienced to this extent.

Combat and puzzles are terrible what you smoking, there is only 3 actual weapons in the entire game no matter the combination, it is mostly just putting a spikey part onto a pointy part for basically every fusion. I can't believe we have to wait basically the best part of 20 years for a proper actual 3D zelda and not just 2 bloated empty Proof-of-Concept tech demos.

What a spectacular game, so many characters full of so much personality and life that even Thor's daughter really left an impression. Zelda TotK? Only Zelda, no one else except maybe Rauru despite his stilted speeches. Nintendo may be a large gaming company but they have a long way to go when it comes to other adventure/rpg games like GoW and Mass Effect.

In BotW, I had to run like hell from those Ancient things, whatever they were called - Those laser beam dudes.
I met them right at the beginning of the game and got absolutely dumpstered by them.
My goal became to become strong enough to beat them.
Every quest, every side quest, every weapon I picked up, every secret I found, became a means to that end.
In TotK, I just kinda ran around doing quests and exploring without an end goal.
    Beat the boss, sure.
    Rescue Zelda, probably.
But it never felt personal. Those were just things the game wanted me to do.
Beating those ancient dudes WAS personal. They whooped the living daylights out of me, multiple times.
They felt like a real, tangible, known threat.
TotK simply didn't have that, for me. In a game that had worse mechanics (RIP bombs, boo to build/fuse) and very much a 'samey' feel. Same map, same basic idea of the main quests, same towns, same weapons (though now garbage without fusing) etc.
This game felt like a re-skin of BotW with worse mechanics.
The depths were okay but became really tedious, really fast. Sky towers were very minimal and sparse. The shrines were okay but still 'samey' as BotW. The 'paintings' on the ground (where you unlock memories by pressing A on the tear) were boring since they could be easily seen from the air and literally all you did was float down and press A.
It just wasn't as fun as BotW.
It was still a good game, don't get me wrong, and I was absolutely hooked for like the first 12-20 hours.
But it KEPT my obsession for nowhere near as long as BotW did. Not even really close.

    • @liarwithagun
      @liarwithagun Před 11 měsíci

I think a big part of the appeal of BotW was the exploration and seeing the unknown world, same as most open world games such as Elden Ring and Skyrim. It makes the replay value of the game much less because a large focus of the game experience is a one-time thing. If someone has already explored the world like someone who played BotW, then the thing the devs spent the largest amount of effort on, the world, is much less conpelling.
Most people played BotW until they got bored of the world. If you already got bored of the world in BotW, the in TotK the world won't hold your attention for nearly as long. That means all that is left is the game's mechanics like UI/menus/controls, combat, puzzles, and runes/abilities. And because the devs focused so much on the world, these mechanics were neglected.
You can say the abilities in TotK are good or good enough, but I can think of plenty of ways that these mechanics could have been improved, especially combat and puzzles, in the sixs years TotK has been in development since they were done with BotW.
