Classic Game Room reviews MR. DO! for ColecoVision from 1983. Originally released in the arcades in 1983 by Universal and published by Taito, Mr. Do! is very similar to Namco's classic Dig Dug but with some fundamental differences that make it rock. In Mr. Do you play as a clown armed with a fun-ball that you throw at enemies, once thrown it leaves you vulnerable until it comes back. Collect cherries in groups of 8 to score bonus points, drop apples on bad guys and collect letters to score an extra life. Similar to Dig Dug you are digging around in dirt and avoiding bad guys in tunnels as well as collecting various food items in the center of the screen, but the scoring is very different and the super-ball requires a different offensive strategy than one would use with a bike pump. Mr. Do! was ported to various game consoles including the Atari 2600, NES, Super Nintendo SNES and Neo Geo! The ColecoVision version is excellent and suffers a bit because of the Coleco controller but not enough to ruin the game. Visuals and audio are top notch as is the stunning gameplay. This CGR review of Mr. Do! has gameplay from Mr Do showing Mr. Do game play in HD from Colecovision where gaming review footage of Mr. Do! was recorded for this Mr. Do! video review on CZcams. - Zábava
As I recall, one of the Colecovision's strengths was that its arcade translations were SPOT ON.
Definitely 👍
Mr Do was one of the best arcade games of the era. The colecovision version was the best home version until the SNES version came many years later. Also has been mentioned before Mr Do's Castle is a great game as well.
I used to play this at my local Safeway back in the day. I'd carry bags for change to play more when I ran out of quarters.
Colecovision rules!
Yeah it does! You know it!
WOW! Thank you so much for doing a Mr Do! Review. I love this game. I wish there was a T-Shirt sold on all these 80s Tshirt sites. It was so popular I'm surprised it's not.
Tee public might have something sorry just saw this post cause I got me a colecovison the one console I never got and I love it to this day.!
Memories from my youth spent in the arcade playing this game... Awesome.
Thanks for posting this, friend :)
another awesome review dude. nice to see you have a working colecovision. Mine seems to need some work
I used to play this game to death on my Colecovision. Universal games translated better than others on this system.
SchizoidMan100 I have to agree that Universal games were the best on here. Universal typically used the same Texas Instruments sound chip in their arcade machines and I think the same Zilog Z80 CPU. The only funny thing with this port is, it was actually based on the Mr. Do! Prototype version of the arcade.
This is being released for the 5200 this November! Great Review Mark!
An excellent video. I really enjoy Mark's Colecovision reviews, and I hope he reviews the SNES version of Mr. Do sometime in the future.
The Colecovision brought the arcade experience home when it was released, and they were not kidding, The levels are detailed, and for once the objects represent what there supposed to really well.
This brings me back the old memories of 80s. I was 8 or 9 at that time and enviously watching teens playing this game at a local shop. My grandma gave me money to play but for some reason this game looked scary to me (or I was scared by the people over there) so I declined. I still wonder why I was so scared while this seems a perfectly loveable game now. Kids nowadays probably wouldn't be scared by this at all.
Ah my favorite Colecovision classic right there!
Thanks for posting this fun game. It was also released on the MSX system.
Little was known to me of arcades, but when my parents got me the colecovision with the Atari attachment, I had no idea my life would change. This game was groundbreaking to me as well as others.
Watching this review made me rush to the colecovision and play mr. Do! For hours. Thanks, forgot how good this game is.
It's one of those you wouldn't think would be fun sort of a Pac-man meets Dig-dug but I agree it's hard to put down. I borrowed it form my friend in the 80's then got it for my CV in the 1990's
Loved this game. Looking for a way to play it today on the Xbox One or the Switch.
Quite refreshing to see another colecovision review here, its been a while.
This game reminds me alot of Digger, its pretty much digger with a clown instead of that tractor.
Hey Mark, When you get a chance since this was your first time playing Mr. Do, I don't know if you cover arcade games/MAME but look up: Mr Do Castle. He uses a hammer and is very challenging. I have Mr. Do for the Atari 2600. What I really like Mark is that people in my age range (i'm 34) can enjoy games like this. And Im glad you show respect to the older games. 2 year watcher of your shows. Keep up good work
Wow. This totally reminds me of "Digger"!!!! Even the sound effects are dead on (when Mr. Do eats those cherries)!
The Colecovision port is interesting in that it has some traits from the prototype of the arcade version rather than the final release. The music that plays during the levels is virtually the same as the prototype, and clearly different from the final arcade release. The ability to freeze the monsters without bringing out chompers (and the music that plays when doing so) is something from the prototype as well. Also like the prototype (and unlike the arcade version) the "EXTRA" letter monsters don't eat apples and don't turn into apples when shot.
Something that I think is unique to the Colecovision port is the behavior of the chompers, which eat through dirt to reach you. In the arcade version, they only travel on paths already cleared away. I don't think the prototype had chompers at all.
Love the way CGR reviews Killzone 3, then next day, reviews some obscure 25 year game on the Vectrex... awesome ☺
Played this to heck in '83 :D
FINALLY! I LOVE THIS GAME
@aGeilini HAHA! Yes! Incredible! I thought I was the only one on the Internet to know the existence of this CD! There are absolutely no informations on google.Thank you very much!
Wow, this looks like the only system you'd ever need!
I used to play this game alot when I was a kid. It's a true classic!
Sometimes an apple falls and a diamond appears.
You can finish the level by picking it up.
In the arcade you got an extra credit.
Awesome game for Colecovision!
Mark is AWESOME!
Nice alternative to Dig-Dug. It was an addictive cart : )
@aGeilini Yes, me too! From a Demo CD. Other games included on the CD were Bad Toys 3d. Krypton Egg, Iko San. Gazilionaire, Q bix, Nelda Nockbladder, the Arkanium Advenutres etc. Have you heard these games?
we need a ColecoVision console review
I still have my Colecovision along with Mr. Do and a assortment of other games. The trick with this game is to get that elusive diamond from making a move dropping one of the rocks and smashing a bunch of chasing enemies with one changing from purple to blue to white in color for big bonus points.
i thumbs up every classic game room video before i watch it because i know im getting free awesome reviews from someone who actually plays games rather than analyze them for few mins then make a review based on 20 seconds of game play :D
Much of the music you hear in this port of the game was taken from the prototype arcade version of _Mr. Do!_ instead of the released version.
ClassicTVMan1981X Hey cool to see you here. My thoughts are due to the limitations of the ColecoVision, they aimed to do a port of the prototype more than the released version. When I first watched this video in 2011, I was confused why the music was different from the arcade game, then I found the prototype version.
@psyjax2 Me too, correct or not, perhaps it was the do-re-mi of the cherry collection that led me to call it that.
@alerommel1 if it had the Comet Busters as well, it is undoubtedly the same CD :)
Gotta wonder if the diamond ever drops in this version. I used to LOVE getting the free game from that in the arcade, because it was such a rare occurrence.
Any way to play Mr. Do today on the Xbox, the Switch or anything else?
I LOVE MR. DO!
I loved this game on Game Boy.
If Mark got requests from the UK for this game, would I be right in guessing it was more popular there?
At the least, for the Game Boy it seems to be easier to find UKV carts than USA.
How does Mr. Do doodoo in that awesome Mr. Do costume?
This is very similar to Mr Ee on the BBC Micro. Also there is Fruity Frank on the Amstrad CPC! The BBC Micro version is perhaps more similar to the Colecovision one, but the Amstrad CPC version is really something else! Check it out, it is really fun to play! .... Also I loved Dig Dug on the Atari it was one my first favourite games.
how can I hook a Colecovision or any other old old game console to my new Flat screen TV? it has a thing that says antenna, that you screw something on, I don't know if that's a R/F can go there
@sinbaadi Ya, that's what I thought. I thought it was a reference to the musical note.
Please Review Mr. Do's Castle, thank you!!
You should try and find pengo for the atari. Use to love that game.
The arcade version had a very neat thing. If you dropped an apple from a far enough distance and squashed some enemies, a diamond would appear. If you touched the diamond, you'd get 8000 points and....a free game.
You should try the SNES version. Very good.
I feel like holding the world record for any amount of time for any game would be something to be proud of =]
Wow, that really sad that you never seen an Mr. Do at the arcades
does anyone know if a mr do's castle prototype is worth anything?
Just DO it Mark!!
This isn't a bad port, but nothing beats the arcade console.
I like how you can tell what level you are on based on the number that is dug out when you start a level. This does not apply to level 1, 11, 21, etc, but level 2,3,4, etc all are shaped like a number. level 10 is shaped like a 0.
I had this game when I was 16.
this game looks pretty sweet for 1983
The music got burned in my brain in 1984 as I would stand next to the adults playing in the arcades
Does anyone know if there is a current Mr.Do game for PC?
@S0ryiu Probably. I always enjoyed hours of Mr. Do on the c-64 port. And, Amiga usually got ports of famous arcades like this.
I play this arcade version at a pizzaria MAME cab. 134,000 so far. I still think your best review is for the Megamania. That was fucking fucking funney as hell. LOL.
"It's unclear if Mr. Do ever did pick up sloppy seconds, though". FTW!!!
i like my coleco version ^^
WOE SO OLD ANS SO AWESOME
Played the SNES port
Dig Dug do what Mr. Doesn't ^^
Mr. Do is still pretty rad though
This game just reminds me how 8-bit Music Rocks.
mr do never made it in the arcades hudge cause of law suits from dig dug but can be found but very very rare
@svenneri you could beat super smash for the n64, i think once you beat the giant hand it lets you use it for other games
and now i am proud that for 2 days in 1982 my dad held the world record in points for this game.
@jupreindeer I really wonder how future games is gonna be like, I mean they can get bigger but we are so close to real life graphics, what happens when we get there?
@aGeilini Me! Sorry for the late reply, but I couldn't help answer to you. I still have the shareware version of Dynamite Joe installed on my computer. It is strange that there are no videos on CZcams on Dynamite Joe! Where did you find the game?
Wow the ColecoVision version is a very good port. Not bad graphically, and the sounds are almost dead on to the arcade.
Where can I find and extra pair of hands at a reasonable prize?
when playing Colecovision, I usually just use a Genesis controller...
First ever Pacman with wall hax!?
Doing the Do :D
@XMrSmileyX "Palau"
Just after 3:36 on the yellow map watch the Mr Do pellet fly over one of the ogres. Totally misses it, then smacks the other one down the hallway.
I wonder if there was a Mr. Don't?
Dang now I have Do, Re, Mi stuck in my head.
@thebibleisfiction Mr. Do beats it...Also, Dig Dug was going to be on Colecovision along with Pac-Man, Joust, and I think more (Like Mario Bros, Xevious, and other games Atari had the console rights to) but due to the crash and everything they were stopped and now prototypes only exist. Find the prototype roms, they're interesting...
I like the gameboy version
This game actually looks fun..
This is the first game i was ever good at.
It actually resets after 655,360 points.
Fear of Clowns does not apply to Mr. Do!
Have any of you ever played dynamite Joe PC game?
Its game mechanics, gameplay and goals, are the exacts same as MR.DO, except DO is a runaway burglar bombing police officers with and it's awesome.
@JoostRevo I`m also from Norway =D
What about Mr. Heli?
@HptmSteinhauer Nice.
This game looks more fun than Dig Dug. Shame the music doesn't play when you walk like in Dig Dug though.
wow you are awsome!!!
Arcade version will always be the best.
@DarkCylon "Dig Dug"
I couldn't help but yell "Mr. DERP!" when I saw the name of this game. DERP!
The arcade version was strange in one respect: A random diamond shows up. If you pick it up, you get a free GAME. Not a guy, but a whole game which is rare for videogames.
@TheXLink What I expect the next step to be is the "George Lucas room". This is a kind of modern day holodeck. Because technology keeps getting cheaper to make massive flat screens possible. 3-D glasses with high rate TV's are already here. Surround sound has existed for some time. PC's can now handle multiple monitors at once. So, I truly expect a trend of a small room with every wall/ceiling consisting of a display to be the next big thing.
As for the USB in the head bit...bad idea.
