Kunio Kobayashi Bonsai demonstration
Vložit
- čas přidán 21. 09. 2017
- Kunio Kobayashi styled this Taxus tree at the Crespi Cup in Italy. Lots of pruning, heavy bending and work on the deadwood. This is the tree's initial styling - work will continue on refining the structure and ramification in the years to come.

Tree: "just fuck me up fam"
Cut it up with your eyes closed
cracked me up
😂😂😂😂
I like this bonsai 👍
😭😂
I might have an unpopular opinion but I really like the way the tree originally looked. I thought he was destroying the tree for a second 😂. I’m knew to bonsai art so maybe I just don’t understand
Its so that the tree will grow even better later on
yea it'll grow in and the shape will solidify and the foliage will come in and it'll look fuller
Agree
If you don’t trim it you will lose control of it
He is a master at killing trees lol 😂
“You just wait, in 50-60 years this thing will look fucking sick, trust me” - him probably
Thats the most aggressive bonsai video I've seen
peace was never an option
No shit right? I can kill plants with way less hostility.
Start a petition: „Abolition of the bonsai tradition“…
It was all aggressive for the American audience. Short attention span, empty the clip type.
Back home I’m sure, well almost sure he’d be very calm, slow and Zen like, maybe.
The gentleman knew what he was doing , the tree was way over grown , it was time for its remodeling, nothing aggressive about it at all , you want to see what I do to my citrus trees when they get pruned if you want to see aggressive lol short back and sides big time. The bonsai had a hair cut , it’s normal.
Dont look at the tree now. Let's see it 12 months later, you will know why bonsai is art
Heeey. Now 2020...

Absolutely. But most of us can't see what it will be in 12 minutes time much less 12 months. I'd like to be able to see that so I would know what to remove or change.
I guess he told the owner „It will be a promising tree in 200 to 300 years!“
Hehe… not all bonsai needs that long of cultivating
It probably died tbh
@@akadhing129 why would it have died? These dudes have spent most of their lives making bonsais. If anyone knows how to not kill them, it’s these dudes
@@sasquatchdonut2674 Ask Herons Bonsai. He mentioned it in one of his videos and the dudes a master of his craft
@@akadhing129 interesting. It might be that different species can take different amounts of work as well
First time I watch this, I thought Kobayashi suck and he just ruined the tree. Now after few years experience in bonsai, I can see the flow of the tree.
Let's see after a decade if I can Imagine the "complete" bonsai of this tree.
You need few years of experience to come this conclusion ? i watched some clips yesterday and today and i know what he is doing, he is preparing the tree for his future SHAPE. It looks awful right now but in the future this tree will look amazing. He cut the branches so they split and expand, in the direction he wants and with the rope he adjust them. And then cutting the wired branches (hanging, dead, crossing, etc) the normal stuff, pruning.
Bonsai looks complicated but what you need is imagination and some balls.
@@ibobeko4309 haha yeah sure bro. Why don't you keep at it then come back in ten years and re-read your comment and see if you feel the same?
The more we know the more we know how much we don't know. 😏
@@ibobeko4309 this is the same as saying, I understand the classic works of Mozzart, he just wrote the notes and played them
@@ibobeko4309 very well said, no gossipers needed, lol
That tiny, Massive tree looks like it has seen a few lightning strikes in its time. Impressive.
This is a shaping prune and deadwood/styling session. It took years to get there and it will take years to obtain its perfected shape that was give a road map here today.
To the people that are just saying he is mean and butchering a tree, and those who are wondering what exactly happened here.
------
What he is doing to the tree is normal to see when you are first starting a bonsai. It may look like he was destroying the tree, but all of it was intentional.
When he was pruning the tree, he was getting rid of all branches that aren't necessary for the tree. For example, branches that didn't get much sunlight and are weak and small, or branches that were too big, or interfered with the style he had in mind. Keep in mind that what I said is an overview of what he did, there was a lot more thinking and different variables going into the cuts he was making.
For the deadwood on the tree, instead of cutting it off and just keeping the living tree, he left it as a feature of the tree to make it look aged and more mature. everyone can do this differently, but most of the time, the artist would strip away the bark of the wood to give a more aged look. You can even sculpt it if you want, he used a chainsaw in the video to do just that.
For the wiring of the remaining branches, those are used as guides to shape the tree into the form to make it look its best. Now keep in mind, he is only first starting the tree, and bending the tree like that may look bad, but what it is for is for the future of the tree. Meaning that after it is positioned, more branches will grow, and those will further add to the shape of the tree, and fill in a lot of that missing space. (again I skipped over a lot of the whys he did specific things)
All of this is just an overview of what and why he did what he did to the tree. Remember that it will take YEARS before the final form of the tree will really show through, And the art of bonsai is that prosses of getting to that end result, that final beautiful, small little tree you normally see in pictures.
------
tl;dr - Bonsai is a long prosses, all he did was cut and shape the tree so it can grow in the future to become a better-looking tree. It takes time, that will not be the final look of the tree.
what is the rope he puts on the branches before wiring?
Very succinctly explained. Appreciate it.
KongFuEagle that was a naturally old tree stolen from nature.
@@kelkunAK it's calles raffia
,you put that first so when you bend it,it does'nt split.
"stolen". please educate yourself on subjects and try to enjoy this art it literally doesn't face any moral challenges.
4:12 has 3 or 4 pairs of scissors/snips in his hand. I have trouble with one haha
would love an update on this tree! what a treat to watch a master at work!
I'm a bonsai lover and this is amazing. Indeed Japanese is the original of the bonsai
They got the inspiration from China tho
Nope... Originally it came from China like Sushi, Ramen and Kanji. But the Japanese refined it.
It originated in China… Japanese culture adopted it and more people in general found love for bonsai as a hobby so it blew in popularity because a lot of people in Japanese value perfection of art and nature. Bonsai… is the perfect hobby lol. As a result Japanese people love to grow them, but so do the Chinese. I learned this from multiple sources including this super old mom and pop bonsai shop where I got my now 13 year old ficus tiger bark. She explained that it originated in China and the popularity spread fast especially with the ficus bonsai family.
i didn't like the look at first but the longer i look at it. it is a piece of art i see so much details and shape he wanted to create it is stunnig a true master piece
I hated the thumbnail but I realised that it's showing the hardships the tree went through
You may think the "before" was better than "after" but let me tell you.. much greater things are ahead with all the new changes done by the Bonsai Master..
Just like LIFE we must always move forward hoping for the best ahead!
That's because you have no choice. After being fucked up like that, all you can do is hope for the best lmao.
In a weird way it reminds me of the healing process of a human.
The still living tree is wrapping around the dead wood trying to protect its scars.
3:30 Am toughts
I don't really understand the comparison bro. 🤔
But then, it is only 7:30pm here now so maybe later. 😀
😆😆😆🤣
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. When I walk in the woods I am in awe and admiration at the beauty of old knarled messed up trees, they have survived and withstood the elements. They tell a story of strength, hardship and perseverance.
All I can say is now the tree is worth twice as much and what a great artist, he makes it look somewhat easy.
My nephew is a bonsai master. He truly makes an art out of this...
Wtf.. hahahaha
Magnífico !!!... Parabéns ao Mestre... 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Mais ou menos né
calm down, people. the tree gonna grow back the leave. the purpose of this is to give it a more interesting shape, add texture and deadwood. bonsai is not clay you have to be patient and let the tree grow before you judge.

Only people who understand about bonsai will comments like you
vinh nguyen LOL
When people don't know the meaning of bonsai , they comment like this ! May God give them some knowledge
Yeah, but it doesn't means that you're stuck with an awful looking bonsai all the years or even decades it takes it to grow back ... he's the master, he will not look to that "work of art" ever again, the owner will. Ahahahahah.
vinh nguyen Had No Idea It Took This Much Work. Have A Whole New Respect For This.
Can you post some links to what the bonsai looks like now?
Bonsai teaches me to let go of things and aging. I don't want any of that. That's why it's hard for me to prune as much as this master artist did. He knows what one must let go of and what one must correct. I hope to become as wise.
Moro no Brasil e na Amazônia. Por aqui se vê muitas gigantes árvores no formato parecido. Chuvas, ventos fortes, sol, relâmpagos a deixam deste jeito. Lembrei de minha infância...🦜AMAZÔNIA É PARA OS FORTES!!🇧🇷💓
My dream is to get to Brazil and the Amazon. I've watched so many videos with beautiful places, but it's hard to get out of Russia, especially now our king is killing people in a neighboring country😪
This tree will be stunning in 3 years time. Why doesn't anyone understand bonsai cannot be perfect in a few hours. Those that do create a 'finished' image after only a few hours have snaked the branches all over to achieve it without regard for the structure. This is how it's done properly, structure first, then foliage
Tom Tom you better watch how bjorn bjorholm making bonsai, he is better and totally diferent...

90% of the comments are people who have no true idea of bonsai.
This is the very first step in a multi-year long process where the tree will heal itself and look better than before.
That is truth, but I will honestly say, I dont like the "after" base.
Those "shaved" branches will never come alive again, and the several left branches which are creating a living part of that tree are pretty hard on my eye.
I can´t see a tree I would want to own in this one.
I´m not saying it is not a master work, but not even a masterpiece will please everyone.
No, this was not the first step. The tree had been worked on for decades.

This is amazing foundation for the perfect Bonsai Tree. Deadwood is very difficult to work with. Great expertise and craftmanship!
I, like many others, would like to see how it looks today...I could see the flow he created when he was finished. From a person who values the art, meaning, intent and history behind bonsai I think he did an amazing job. If it were me and I was "on stage" or in front of a large crowd I'd probably move pretty fast myself. 😄 For all those that feel bad for the tree...do you wear commercially mined crystals or stones, gold or silver from your neck? That's taking minerals from the Earth. Displacing animals. The list could go on as to how hypocritical those judgements are. Maybe just try to pull back and look at the bigger picture.
If we constantly judged people for their hypocrisy, we would never achieve anything. No one is perfect.
But I don't know enough about bonsai to feel bad for the tree
@@hudulu4933 I like campfires too much to feel bad for the tree.. it's a damn plant not an animal
If it’s still alive why feel bad? What’s the difference between that and lightening hitting a real tree, plants are the real life wolverines, it just shrugs it off.

Don't understand all the hate in this comment section. Such a beautiful piece of living art. But of course, beauty lies in the eyes of beholder. I'm trying to shape a dead wood on one of my Ficus Microcarpa, I hope it turns out well!
I can't understand the negative comments. I thought he styled the tree to set a platform for the future, after all bonsai isn't finished overnight. I've got trees that I've been working on for 30 years that I'm still changing my original idea of the shape
I'm in twilight zone! I remember one chapter that a such beautiful woman got a surgery and her face was ruined like a monster and all people said "oh, beautiful....." THAT'S IT!!!!!!!!
Absolutely
I guess if u understand bonsai you would appreciate the foresight, of what this will look like years on.
Damn someone doesn't get Bonsai. It takes years for the tree to grow into it new shape after being groomed, what your seeing isn't the final product, but the setup for it. He has to cut, bend, strip and oil it over many weeks for it work and grow in the way he wants. Of course he is doing it quickly as it is a presentation for watchers. The true discipline of it is discipline as it takes ones whole life to complete a bonsai truly and even longer to make it bigger.
