  • Kunio Kobayashi styled this Taxus tree at the Crespi Cup in Italy. Lots of pruning, heavy bending and work on the deadwood. This is the tree's initial styling - work will continue on refining the structure and ramification in the years to come.

      @ibobeko4309 Před 3 lety +9

      You need few years of experience to come this conclusion ? i watched some clips yesterday and today and i know what he is doing, he is preparing the tree for his future SHAPE. It looks awful right now but in the future this tree will look amazing. He cut the branches so they split and expand, in the direction he wants and with the rope he adjust them. And then cutting the wired branches (hanging, dead, crossing, etc) the normal stuff, pruning.
      Bonsai looks complicated but what you need is imagination and some balls.

  • @Eastwill
    @Eastwill Před 6 lety +274

    To the people that are just saying he is mean and butchering a tree, and those who are wondering what exactly happened here.
    ------
    What he is doing to the tree is normal to see when you are first starting a bonsai. It may look like he was destroying the tree, but all of it was intentional.
    When he was pruning the tree, he was getting rid of all branches that aren't necessary for the tree. For example, branches that didn't get much sunlight and are weak and small, or branches that were too big, or interfered with the style he had in mind. Keep in mind that what I said is an overview of what he did, there was a lot more thinking and different variables going into the cuts he was making.
    For the deadwood on the tree, instead of cutting it off and just keeping the living tree, he left it as a feature of the tree to make it look aged and more mature. everyone can do this differently, but most of the time, the artist would strip away the bark of the wood to give a more aged look. You can even sculpt it if you want, he used a chainsaw in the video to do just that.
    For the wiring of the remaining branches, those are used as guides to shape the tree into the form to make it look its best. Now keep in mind, he is only first starting the tree, and bending the tree like that may look bad, but what it is for is for the future of the tree. Meaning that after it is positioned, more branches will grow, and those will further add to the shape of the tree, and fill in a lot of that missing space. (again I skipped over a lot of the whys he did specific things)
    All of this is just an overview of what and why he did what he did to the tree. Remember that it will take YEARS before the final form of the tree will really show through, And the art of bonsai is that prosses of getting to that end result, that final beautiful, small little tree you normally see in pictures.
    ------
    tl;dr - Bonsai is a long prosses, all he did was cut and shape the tree so it can grow in the future to become a better-looking tree. It takes time, that will not be the final look of the tree.

      It originated in China… Japanese culture adopted it and more people in general found love for bonsai as a hobby so it blew in popularity because a lot of people in Japanese value perfection of art and nature. Bonsai… is the perfect hobby lol. As a result Japanese people love to grow them, but so do the Chinese. I learned this from multiple sources including this super old mom and pop bonsai shop where I got my now 13 year old ficus tiger bark. She explained that it originated in China and the popularity spread fast especially with the ficus bonsai family.

    Kobayashi’s videos should end with the trees shown in a more mature light. People often face difficulty foreseeing what his creations will become and that is why Kobayashi’s comment section lacks the respect and appreciation it deserves.

    Don't understand all the hate in this comment section. Such a beautiful piece of living art. But of course, beauty lies in the eyes of beholder. I'm trying to shape a dead wood on one of my Ficus Microcarpa, I hope it turns out well!

  • @vette63
    @vette63 Před 2 lety +1

    I can't understand the negative comments. I thought he styled the tree to set a platform for the future, after all bonsai isn't finished overnight. I've got trees that I've been working on for 30 years that I'm still changing my original idea of the shape

    • @ahanuesterhuizen6330
      @ahanuesterhuizen6330 Před 3 lety +4

      Damn someone doesn't get Bonsai. It takes years for the tree to grow into it new shape after being groomed, what your seeing isn't the final product, but the setup for it. He has to cut, bend, strip and oil it over many weeks for it work and grow in the way he wants. Of course he is doing it quickly as it is a presentation for watchers. The true discipline of it is discipline as it takes ones whole life to complete a bonsai truly and even longer to make it bigger.
