I tried putting 2 discs in a wii to see if i could choose between the 2 like smb and duck hunt and NSMBWii got scratched, and like 5 to 6 years later i found out it works in ny wii u

Good thing Nintendo stuck with cartridges during the N64 era, and went back to carts with Switch. Unless you have a disc resurfacing machine, optical media will always break under careless users.

Very rarely the gamecube logo can appear in the disc channel on wii u, they probably were planning to add gamecube compatibility but ultimately scrapped it
With homebrew, you can run Gamecube games natively on the Wii U (but not from a physical disc), cause the Wii U is just a Gamecube buffed twice. 😂😅

I assume there is nothing about plan or no plan it's just wii mode being wii fw, which can handle gc discs, i guess the primary point is that mini discs and slot in drives are just a pain and likely a good bit nore expensive so they scrapped that.
Possibly just to make more cash by forcing owners to buy up on virtual console which actually is Nintendo being hypocritical since its emulation

Nintendo wasn’t that stupid lol. Even with the Wii, they made sure that disks wouldn’t get stuck, and would be spit back out. Still gave me a heart attack the first time it happened, cus it just kept making noises, I thought I broke it.
I dunno, when my Wii U bricked, had to disassemble my Wii U and get my disc back, it took some mechanical surgery to make sure the disc wouldn't break.

Fun fact, the Wii system menu is a wad (Wii app), same as every channel on the Wii, so when you open the Wii u menu channel, all the Wii does is trigger a system restart with the Wii u menu channel, same goes for the Wii home button menu, which when pressing the button to go back to the Wii menu, boots up the Wii menu app

Certain Wii models have a gamecube chip on board for backwards compatibility, I'm guessing the wii u lacks this chip
The CPU is natively compatible, it's just a cheaper drive that can't centre the disc that stops it working
Close, but not quite. A Wii is literally just a GameCube with a few added parts. The Wii’s disk drive supported smaller disks. The Wii U is just a Wii with added parts, so it by extension all supports GameCube games. The reason it doesn’t work, is just because the Wii U’s drive doesn’t have functionality for small disks.

Fun fact: wii was orginally have dvd playback but was rejected due to licensing issues. Though the early wii models had leftover secret dvd support and the secret can be unlocked through homebrew apps like wiimc but does not work on new wiis anymore due to the drive chip being changed

Correct. If you swap out a GameCube compatible disk drive it works. Actually, the only special thing about the GameCube compatible drives is that they center the disk so it spins properly. If you open up a Wii U, you can just center the disk yourself, and it works.@@Darrylboio

The Wii u does not have the holder to hold the GC game like a compatible Wii.
We all know the Wii mode that this Wii U runs is emulating the Wii model RVL-101 which is a Wii with no GCN compatibility (a.k.a. Wii Family Edition?). That's why it won't run GCN games.
(Except if there's a mod to do it)

The only reason the Wii U or the Wii Family Edition can’t run GameCube games is because their disk drives don’t support the small disks. If they did, GameCube games would actually run just fine.
in case anyone is wondering, you can in fact play gc games on the wii u as the wii is almost literally just a gc, but you have to unlock the wii u and install homebrew.
always find weird when they do this, the wii u could always read gc discs but they just softlocked just because they can, it would not cost anything of them to let us play without modding the system

It's just a cheaper disc drive that doesn't have mini DVD support, open it up and place the disc in manually and it will work.

The problem isn't that the Gamecube discs aren't big enough. It's that the Wii U's Wii Mode most likely uses the architecture of the RVL-101 Wii (also known as the Wii Family Edition, which lacks GameCube compatibility), although this is just speculation.
This can actually happen with certain models of the original wii, as those ones don't support gamecube games.

I think functionally it should work, since gc games are even recognized on family edition wiis, but the wii u doesnt have the same mechanism that the wii does, and cant grab the disc as easily.

Well on the original Wii one of the early ways to hack the Wii was I'm pretty sure to use pliers on this thing that turns it into a GameCube I'm not going to explain how it works but I'm pretty sure you can just search up the history of Wii hacking so my theory is they didn't bother to fix the pack

I think it’s the disc drive
The wii u has almost all the wii hardware in it, and the gamecube hardware too because the wii had the gamecube hardware in it. The wii u boots into wii mode when you enter the wii menu. The disc drive just isn't designed for the small gamecube discs. Nintendon't, homebrew that launches gamecube games through iso files, natively runs gamecube games, and isn't an emulator, so the wii u can natively run gamecube, nintendo just didn't allow it.

The Wii u optical drive was not meant to take smaller gc disks
I think the Wii mode is based off of later hardware versions (specifically ones that can’t read GC games).
The only differences with those later versions is the lack of GameCube ports and the disk drive that supports the small disks. The actual motherboard is the exact same. It doesn’t have anything to do with what version of the wii it’s based on. :) If the disk drive had support for the small disks, then it would work just fine.

Unfortunately the Wii & Wii U only have a dvd player codex.
The GameCube reader is locked on Wii U’s. You have to jailbreak it. The Wii U has no support for Blu Ray at all as Wii U discs aren’t blu ray. They’re proprietary optical discs formatted by Nintendo.
I have a Wii thats jail broken from Ebay with everything installed it plays cds & dvds just fine through a gx hub.
The Wii U is a weird one. Cause if jailbroken you can play gamecube games and download controllers but I dont remember there being a way to save access save data.
I always thought it was such a shame Nintendo locked dvd, cd playback on the Wii & the Gamecube function on the Wii U.
