This film is a compilation of 11 Hikikomori stories shared by people from all around the world, who at some point in life chose to withdrew from society. (Hikikomori = shut in)
I hope that a lot of people will see this film, and that it will shed some lights on the Hikikomori people in the world!
This film was a very big project for me. There were about 30+ people involved in total, including story contributors, illustrators, proofreaders, and narrators etc. About 60 original illustrations were used in the film, which explains how the large volume of this project. All the materials in the film are original. The stories, narrations, and illustrations are created just for this project. Also, I composed all the music myself.
I would appreciate it if you could share the link to this film with your friends. I hope that many people will get to know this film and gain a deeper understanding of Hikikomori people!

Hello. My name is Hiroshi Yamazoe. I'm Japanese, born in 1984.
I was a "Hikikomori"("social withdrawal" or "shut-in") for about 10 years, but now I have recovered a little.
I love to travel abroad. Traveling abroad has changed my life as a Hikikomori. I have visited Western European countries, Asian countries, and Russia.
I will continue to travel abroad in the future.
Currently, I'm studying English. I'm struggling with it, but I will not give up!

Since pandemic hits i stop college that's when i bacame hiki. Now im 25 yrs old and i decided to continue my colloge university next month in order to help myself and my beautiful wonderful parents ,it's time for me to stop worrying my parents. Being alone in room surrounded by gadgets and books/manga ,action figure is super addictive so my advice to my fellow hiki's out there let's break our dark hard shell and step outside to found a new large shell were we will able to grow like hermit crabs, staying in one shell will only hinders our growth .so start supporting our hobby by working full time or part time, let's precious our lives wether it's a pitiful one or a pleasant one we are our own enemy it's time to make peace with ourselves.......

Hello mochipii! Thank you for watching. I thought your story is very valuable for this film. I felt it expressed some common feelings of modern workers. And in Japan, there are many people like you who become a Hikikomori because of the bad experiences they had at work place. So I think your story is something that a lot of Hikikomori in Japan can relate to. And, there are various definitions of Hikikomori, but I thought you are a Hikikomori because you fit the general definition of a hikikomori: not working, not going to school, not receiving any training, and having no close relationships other than family for a long period of time.

I really resonated with the second lady - i work in a career field where i invested mysef as a person to the instituion but management wasnt the greatest. I served my clients to the best of my ability and they were sad to see me go (my clients) once the company laid me off last april. Now in the same field but with a new institution under amazing management, leadership truly makes all the difference. I started getting disheartened after being unable to find work and applied for everything and felt that sense of apathy willing to work anything. Its unfortunate, but a lot of why things have shifted is identity politics as a result of post-modernism inflecting our lives where we are not seen as individuals, but numbers and our work ethic extracted as a resource of abuse. Whats sad is her mindset is actually quite objective about the outside world. The reality when faced with job loss unexpectedly is that you realize how precarious work is, and then how life is and you lose meaning. We need to find what is meaningful once again because work isnt it

When they don't need you anymore, the company will just cut you off like in this story. It's like replacing a part of a machine. So, as you said at the end, I think it is important for us to find something meaningful other than working in the companies.

Hello Balboa! It's been a while. It means a lot to me that someone like you, who has a deep knowledge of Eastern philosophy and spirituality, found it is a good film. And as for his words, I completely agree with it. If we simply adapt to a sick society, we will become just sick people. If a society is sick, it is better to live at a distance. As for me, I would like to continue to live at a distance from the mainstream of this society. 🙂
Although I never was truly hikikomori I came close. I find the stories very touching and the artwork and music moving. I'm sharing this with my Saturday movie night group tonight.
Just wow! I am deeply touched by this wonderful work. It makes me kind of sad and thoughtful listen to all the personel stories from everyone who has joined your wonderful project. But it also gives me some kind of strengh and hope! Even if we all suffer alone, we are not entirely lonely. There are so many of us, so that in our hearts we are all somehow connected and united! It's good to know that there are people who will understand us, because they know it all so well and suffering from the same.

I think many people choosing to withdraw from society do so because of Childhood PTSD, caused by parental abuse or just failure to support the child, school bullying etc. There are treatments for PTSD that actually work.

I'm being honest when I say I believe everything about this is wonderful. I found many of these stories very relatable, and for those I didn't I still enjoyed the insight. The artwork is excellent and the soundtrack you composed is top-class. You chose good narrators. I'll be sure to share it with a few people. (Although, online I mostly keep my personal life private. Still, I know some who'd like to see it.) I hope that word will spread because this is a film worthy of many people's attention. I don't think I've ever seen this amount of effort put into a mental health passion project.

Seven months i've not stepped outside my home, i do aerobic exercise & go to terrace to sit under sun also take healthy diet.

i quit university after failing the 2nd semester for the 3rd time spent three years at home like a Hikikomori.... went to community college after finished but unable to find work and im back stuck in the ole house....ill go back do Cisco....then look for work again.....but just staying at home is destructive watching all the people around you grow up having jobs and relationships.....feels like ill amount to nothing....the old cycle of porn, video games and youtube videos begins to sink in staying at home driving me crazy..... im still trying to break it with exercise, reading into psychology and philosophy...... i wish i could go out for walks but im so ashamed of who i am this obese ugly overgrown adult of a failure at 26 to go outside........ i will overcome!!!

Hello! Today I watched your self-introduction video. You went to college and got a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and are working towards a PhD Degree in Philosophy. I think that is very impressive. At least you already have a Batchelor's degree. This is definitely a great thing to me, as I have no academic credentials anything and has been a shut-in from childhood to eary 20s.
And it is great that you have found a home that you can live in for the rest of your life. I think you are very lucky to have been able to escape the stress of thinking about where to live and moving. I find your place looks very clean and comfortable to live in. The kitchen and furniture are very clean. Also, your cat is very cute. I think it's great that she's keeping you from becoming too depressed!

Fantastic work Mr Hiroshi. I find myself more relatable as I listen to other people's experiences.
I'm 27 next year and I am unable to land any job here in Vietnam. I always stay at home with my family and I sometimes go out. It's becoming unbearable to sit all days at home without doing productive. I could feel the anxiety is eating me alive slowly by days.
I'm glad that I am not alone and there are other people who have great opportunities to share their pains for the world to hear.
I pray for everyone involved in the video and other Hikikomori around the world all the best, wherever they are.
The story with the guy marrying girl and having baby broke me and made me cry because that seemed like a dream.
Thanks for watching! I also thought the French man's story was amazing. I guess in this day and age, it's not uncommon for people to fall in love because of the Internet, and the Internet transcends national borders, so maybe this kind of thing is possible for you too and not just a dream.

ナレーター、イラスト、体験談、それぞれ素晴らしいですが、それをまとめた山添さんはすごい。
それぞれのやり取りが煩雑だったんじゃないでしょうか。実はこの部分がとても興味あります。ストレスがあったんじゃないかなと心配になりました。
そして、自ら音楽を手掛けたのは多才というしかないです😲
逆に、どこかこうしたほうがいいかというのを考えてみました。動画が同じリズムで続くので、前編・後編と分けた方が効果的かなと思いました。心理学でも、親近効果・終末効果というのがあって、人は直前と最後に与えられた情報の印象が強くなるらしいです。
1時間以上にわたる動画なので、後半の視聴維持率が下がり、多くの人に見られないとしてら勿体ないです。山添さんはそのデータを見られるので次のプロジェクトに活かしたら、これはマジで全米が、いや世界中が涙するかも😭
自分も何かひとつの作品を作りたいです。今は自分のCZcamsを一ヶ月に一回も更新できない状態が続いているので何とかしたい…。

今の所、日本の人はあまり見ていないようなのでさとうさんの意見はとても貴重です。素晴らしいと言って頂けてとても嬉しいです。
ナレーション、イラスト、体験談の取りまとめは意外にもそんなに苦労しなかったです。前回の短編映画で学んだお陰かもしれません。具体的な方法は、まず表を作り、プロジェクトの進捗状況を記録していきました。例えば、
・ストーリー1:Aさん/イラストレーター:Bさん現在3枚完成/ナレーター未定/
みたいな感じです。その表の進捗状況に基づいて各参加者と連絡を取り合いながらパズルを完成させるような感じで全ての素材を揃えて行きました。各素材ファイルはストーリー毎のフォルダ毎に分けて管理して行きました。動画編集の時はそれらをただ順番通りに並べて行きました。
実は一番苦労したのは大量の日本語字幕でした。字幕は表示時間が限られているので、各表示時間に則した長さの字幕を表示させないと読み難くなるので何度も翻訳を練り直しました。後、全てオリジナル素材で作りたいというこだわりがあり、でも音楽を誰かに作って貰うとなると高額なお金がかかるので、自分で1週間くらいかけて頑張って作曲しました。苦労しましたが、ポジティブな感想を世界から沢山頂けて（もちろん商業作品のような大きな反応ではありませんが）、今はとても報われた気持ちです。🙂
なるほど前編と後編で分けたりして視聴者を飽きさせないような作りにすると良いのかもしれないですね。あと各エピソードの途中で引きこもりに関する資料や情報を挿入したら良かったのかもしれません。次作（今の所、作るかどうか未定ですが）の時にはもしよければ、スペシャルアドバイザーとして参加してください。👍
また、さとうさんが何か作品を作る時にもし必要なら協力いたします。
CZcams動画は自分も更新頻度が下がりがちです。何とか鬱を乗り越えて更新頻度を上げて行ければと思ってます。お互い無理ない程度に頑張れればいいですね。

Yes. I know that very well. There are a lot of Hikikomori in the world. Since I started making videos about this on CZcams, I have received many messages from many countries saying that I am Hikikomori too. At present, this crisis is basically only attracting attention in Japan and Korea, but in the future, this crisis will be recognized worldwide.

Is there an english speaking online community for hikikomori. I have been one for a long time and would still be, but i got kicked out of home. I live in a place for people with mental illness now, having been diagnosed with schizophrenia myself.
I dont know what to Do. No friends, no siblings. Only my mom, but she is the one who kicked me out.

Hello Qyuiiiiiin! I am using a software called Premiere Pro. It is probably the most standard video editing software in the world right now. And you can learn how to use it by watching the many instructional videos on CZcams.

While no one specific story explains my mentality to a T, I do see myself in each one, especially the last one...just wish that one if em was in my age range. Maybe one of those that didn't specify their age? Namely, 40+ years old. Now I'm left wondering if my current line of thinking/mentality towards the hiki state is due to my age or not....well, I needed something new to think about, this will fit the bill.
Hello. Thanks for watching. I had a similar thought. I could relate to each of the stories, although they do not completely match with mine. I think it means that there is a wide range of diversity and uniqueness among Hikikomori people. I think it would have been great if your story was included in the film as well. Age and gender are optional, so some people did not write them. And it's not uncommon to find Hikikomori in their 40s or older in Japan. It seems that there are many people who recover from that situation.

My interested in the subject stems from my own experiences. I've spent a lot of time playing MMOs and meeting people like me on there. I am queer and many people I meet online are as well, from my experience it seems common for queer people to end up hikikomori myself included. You should be able to imagine, because childhood can be rough, the possibility of experiencing discrimination as an adult, and some might even stay closeted into adulthood. I just thought this is a perspective to also think about!
I swear I am a Hikikomori of the American variety. I quite love it actually. I have a few contacts when I go out to eat, otherwise I am very happy and content at home. It is a simple life really, I know deep down that I am a Hikikomori in some way. 😌❤️

But governments do not allow children not to go to school according to their laws : it is an obligation , they force the child to attend it cause it is an obligation , & if the child does not attend it , it is an obligation for the education ministry inspectors to check if the child is having the education at home with the help of the parents in some countries . That said , governments do not even apply other laws … When the child becomes an adult , he must prove to some goverments that he is in search of a job , they do not allow their citizens to not look for a job , you must give them a report regularly about your job hunting process . They track their citizens to push them to look for a job because they know it can be dangerous for them otherwise .

Hello! Thanks for watching. As you can see in the commentary, these stories are about former Hikikomori and current Hikikomori. I think that stories of people who have recovered from Hikikomori are very valuable. Because I think they can be a hint for people to recover from Hikikomori state. And the 2nd story is about a person who turned from an employee to a Hikikomori.
I do think that "hikikomori" is used on the internet very casually nowadays, in some cases by people who barely meet the more formal definition at all. This causes some people to show hostility towards those who enter the discussions, in case they are such an "impostor". Sometimes they feel that generalising a condition like hikikomori downplays the severity of those afflicted with the problem. This is seen on Japanese hikikomori BBS where they don't like letting people in who cannot show they are a hikikomori with near certainty.
That being said, I think it is fruitless to gatekeep the condition, especially when it is described in a global context. The societal differences between Japan and the rest of the world make it so that if going by the strict original Japanese description, the existence of a global hikikomori would be much, much rarer. Global hikikomori communities would be very lonely going by that standard. So I think it is important to at the very least be somewhat flexible about it. That's why I don't gatekeep personally. I don't even know for sure if I'd qualify by the Japanese description, but it doesn't really matter so much to me. What's in a name?
With regard to your comment about the first story, former hikikomori stories are valuable, like Hiroshi said. Remember that he is also a former hikikomori. There's a lot we can learn from those who have recovered.

I think he was hust sharing his journey and not seeking attention. It's supposed to show that life can get better for everyone.
