Michelle, Look how much you've grown and developed and evolved since you started the North Island. That process will continue for you. Your honest perseverance will continue to move you toward your goals. The term failure doesn't apply here. This is a rest stop along the way. You are a winner, Michelle. Deep down you know that to be true.
I like your comment (Rest Stop) sometimes that's what we need.
Well said John. Yep deep down you know it’s true Michelle. Your a winner.
Thank you John, and thanks again for the support you have provided along the way. I really appreciate you!
Well this episode brought a tear to my eye. A setback, a reset, caution, weather, health, motivation, none of these things are failure!! Stewart Island is beautiful!!! I must say I love your CZcams episodes & hope you continue to document your journey where ever it leads!!!!
Thank you very much Christopher, I appreciate your support. Stay tuned for more short films from the rest of my South Island adventure :)
Failure is that little knoll you pass on the climb up to the top of the mountain. Your trying and that’s more than most do, keep going and don’t give up on what you want to achieve.
I absolutely love this saying! I think it needs to go on a T-Shirt...
I made that up so if you make money out of it throw me a cut. The one I cannot claim my own but I love is “success is the pile of failure your standing on.”
I like how you have expressed yourself so well in this one, and your tenacity will lead you to your destination at the time that is perfectly right for you. ❤️
I have often given failure the label of a "stepping stone to my next success" 😉 💖 👍🏿
At the end of the day do what's right for you. It's not an easy journey the TA. I enjoyed my TA trip of the South Island but that's easy to say now. I have forgotten all the hard times which there was if I'm trueful. Take care and hope you keep enjoying the outdoors and nature etc.
I think hindsight is definitely a wonderful thing. There are so many days even on this little adventure that I hated whilst I was there, but looking back I actually really appreciate (the hike out to Captain Creek Hut being one of them). Thank you for your comment!
Thank you Michelle! The right time will come xx
You're welcome Ruth. Baby steps!
That would have been a hard decision but at the same time if your hearts not in it then there is no point continuing at this stage. You’ve had an incredible journey so far & the trail will be there when & if you decide to continue at a later date. And definitely not a failure in my eyes, as much as I love hiking I don’t think I’d have it in me to walk as far as you have!
Why thank you! Personally, speaking from experience, I think EVERYONE has it in them to do what I have done... that's exactly what I've set out to prove by having this channel! Looking back now, I think it's fair to say my heart is DEFINITELY in it, but it just wasn't the right time for one reason or another. Here's to whatever this year holds!
You didn't fail at anything!!
Your adventure just took a different path. You are a inspiration
Thank you
Thank you so much, I appreciate your support! Now, for more on where that path ended up taking me you'll have to stay tuned!
Theres no such thing as "failure" here, firstly the most important step is to have a go and that's exactly what you did, the plans or dreams you had before starting always change when you step into the reality of the plan or task ahead, that's just a fact of the exploring life. As a retired cave diver failure was the norm and success of new underwater territory was hard won, even at the cost of the lives of friends...so let's do a quick sum up of this. A: No one died. B: The trail and the completion is well within you're ability its just not now, but it will be and in the end never ever give up. The trip might just be small sections at a time however I have no doubt you will complete the jigsaw. Michelle you are the "woman in the arena".
I really appreciate you taking the time to write this. And thank you for shedding some much-needed perspective. Often, it is difficult in the moment to put a rational spin on things, and it's something people with mental disorders tend to struggle with in particular. Personally, I have no idea how you could take on a career as a cave diver... that sounds terrifying to me!!
Wonderfully written! Gives anyone inspiration to apply this to anything in life
Bravo for attempting! That’s more than most would ever do. To try means to learn in my book. Failure is not in the vocabulary. I have days when I just don’t want to get out of bed no matter how much I want to hike. I would get terribly upset with myself because I felt like I was wasting my time. I have some medical issues that often dictate if I’m going to get up and get moving. So, I had to reframe these days when I couldn’t get going. I found that the days that I could became much sweeter. Don’t look at the perceived failure, look at the success that follows. Those of us that hike with challenges have a richer journey as we overcome challenges and succeed no matter how small.
Back in 2020, I attempted a Thru of a local trail. Within 3 days, I realized the Cohos Trail was not for me. I had to rescue myself and my dog out of the woods and to a cabin where I would await a ride home. I beat myself up over this and the internet definitely expressed an opinion of my perceived failure too. But in the end, I focused on what I learned and all the negative melted away. This trip has since become a favorite.
I really enjoy following your journey. I will continue to cheer you on from the States.
❤️🥾🥾🐭🐕
I so appreciate you reaching out with this Rachel. I watched a few of your videos, and I can totally empathise with some of the feelings you've experienced on trail. Thank you for being brave, putting yourself out there, and helping to spread the message to others... sometimes it's not easy, but that's where the real growth comes.
Thank you for watching, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the videos coming out in the next few weeks and months!
@@LongWhiteGypsy Thanks for watching as well. I have below zero temps and multiple feet of snow right now but I hope to get out again soon. The most important thing is to keep trying! I’m looking forward to your next videos. Take care and happy hiking!
Yr bloody brilliant. In life there is no such thing as failure - it is always just a fork in the path to your next adventure.
Great video Michelle, you're an inspiration and should be very proud of your achievements.
Thank you Bruce. I appreciate your support, and thanks for watching!
Amazingly well put together!
Many Thanks Jake, and thanks for watching!
You are 100% good enough, ur super fit, athletic, kind, intelligent and have great hiking gear !! At least we get another TA video series next season, that's fun :) Also, when u give it another go, will u start from the top of the SA or where u left off? thanks and I love ur channel!!
Haha if there's one thing I do know... it's that I have good gear! I just need better legs and stamina to carry it all. Not sure yet about next season (maybe... maybe not?) ... we'll see! But still plenty of good stuff to come from the rest of my South Island adventures!
Was wondering how you were going. Your expression of failure was touching and begs the question if failure was present then it’s almost always temporary. Be kind to yourself and look forward to retaking the trail.
Will do, Roy! For now, I will be focussing more on getting healthy and enjoying some shorter trips!
I see no failure here Michelle! What an epic journey you have been on both physically mentally emotionally and spiritually. Every day you continue that journey as you walk through each day even off TA.
All the best. I will look out for your future adventures...Camino de Santiago maybe? ( once Spain is open again) or other walks.
I have joined the ranks of many other NZers and travellers worldwide and am now eagerly awaiting borders to re-open. I feel my feet itching to experience some other long distance trails.... despite my fear of flying! The Camino is one of those on the list, and even more so another long trail which started this whole adventure.... Thank you!!
@@LongWhiteGypsy yes! I am definitely in that category...I am itching to return to Spain to have another go at some of their amazing pilgrim walks. Camino Portuguese and Frances in 2019. Hopeful for Norte in 2022???!! All easy walks for you!!
You'll be back when the time is right! Great stuff
Thanks heaps... and yes, I don't doubt it! Good to hear from you :D
Beautiful and poetic.
Thank you Kelsey :)
Well done Michelle. You are already turning your original thinking on its head and learning from your experiences. Failure has such negative connotations but this doesn't have to be so. The realisation that we can bounce back and use 'failure' to develop resilience and a better understanding of ourselves means that it isn't a negative thing at all, as illustrated by the comments here. My own failures have been my own fault, setting goals that were unrealistic and not timely or even personally achievable. I've been inclined to measure my own success against the advice and criticisms offered by people who I now realise would have been better to take a good dose of their own suggestions! Hang onto those dreams and make them more your own as you learn more about yourself. Rebuilding confidence by doing some more Great Walks is an excellent idea. We have some wonderful tramping tracks that aren't on the TA. The TA will still be there when that little inner voice tells you that you are ready to tackle another section. By the way, your videos are looking great.
Thank you for your lovely and kind words Robin. I couldn't agree more with the sentiment you've expressed here. If you have suggestions for trails I could check out (probably mostly NI based) please let me know!
Just thank you for this 🙏❤
You're so welcome :)
So true Michelle you didn’t fail it just wasn’t the right time for you. I hear that voice too the monotonous your not good enough, you never achieve anything, your worthless. Wow are our minds mean to us at times and sometimes all the time. We’d never say that to a friend but it’s ok to say it to ourselves 🤷♀️. I know that voice is full of lies but it gets terrifying and believable when it’s putting you down all the time. Just like a battered partner. We are victims to our own minds.
But if we keep telling it to shut up and at least doubting what it’s saying which I have now learned to do most of the time I question it and say I actually don’t think your right I’m not a failure because ..........
As soon as you come up with an example that voice becomes weaker.
You’ve got this Michelle and I look forward to being a part of your journey via your vlogs. Your journey is your journey. Much love ❤️
You're right... we can definitely be mean to ourselves sometimes! And it's hard work trying to force new thoughts which challenge the old ways. Bravo to you for continuing that fight everyday. Speaking from experience, I know it can be exhausting! Look forward to taking you along with me on the rest of the journey. Thanks Emma xoxo
Meh, so you're a section hiker not a through hiker. Welcome aboard. You have your whole life to finish that trail, theres no room in your pack for guilt. HESR.
P.S. Your scripting was nice, you've obviously got a little writing talent going on there.
I like this ... "there's no room in your pack for guilt." Might have to be another mantra I adopt! And thank you for the comment re: my scripting. Check out my articles in wilderness magazine if you want to see more: longwhitegypsy.com/2020/10/07/through-fear-and-towards-freedom/
Perhaps a book?
Get you butt back out there, the reast of the Richmond ranges are waiting for you. Sounded like you needed a person there to help push you along. Just finished them myself and it was hard.
Working on it!! Its more the financial side of things holding me back at the moment, but desperate to get this section ticked off :)
A well journaled, honest account of your personal journey. I was sensing compulsion & not passion in videos leading up to this one.
Maybe I’ll catch you on a wildcamp somewhere, they are so much quicker but with the similar outdoor rewards. 👍
Thank you very much Dave, appreciate your kind words. I'm not one for doing much wild camping at the moment (unless it's out on top of a ridge somewhere) but maybe in the future!
For me failure is merely a stepping stone to success. ❤️ 😊 🌿 🙆🏻♀️ 👍🏽
I love your thoughts in this video, and I'm so proud of you for all that you have accomplished so far!
You will definitely be back, and you will achieve your ultimate goals!
One day, one step at a time, we do life and seize our opportunities at the times that are perfectly right for us individually.
All the best! 😍
Such wonderful words Wendy, thank you so much 🙏😍
Sorry, I had a typo in my comment below. You started focusing on a through hike of the TA. My goal is the AT.
Awesome! I'm not sure the AT would be my cup of tea, but perhaps this long distance hiking passion of mine might extend there one day.. after the PCT of course! Good luck with your prep... when are you planning to start?
Such an honest video Michelle. A saying I heard recently comes to mind: If you never want to fail, don't try and live in mediocrity
Who'd ever want to be mediocre, aye?! LOL... I pride myself on being just a little bit mad :)
You haven’t failed Michelle, you’ve deferred!
I know that you can do it!
Looking forward to see you finish.
I’m guessing that you walked the Queen Charlotte Track a second time so you could obtain your “Trail Legs” before the Richmond Range; It didn’t work out this time - that is the hardest section in the South Island, I believe.
When you continue your TA, later this year - start mountain fit.
Have a look at this bloke’s vlogs on getting fit for those mountains (and other things) - you have 5 months:-

Cheers,
Thank you Robin for reaching out! You are, of course, absolutely right and I thank you so much for your support!
Yes, I did decide to re-walk the QCT to get my trail legs back somewhat before the effort of the ranges. Yes, the Richmonds are often touted as the most difficult section, and will have to be something I think really hard about before re-attempting in the future. I've decided I won't be returning to the trail this upcoming season, preferring instead to take some time off of the TA and do some other adventures instead, so I will have plenty of time to get mountain fit using the videos you have shared, thanks so much! I will let you know how it goes :)
