    Great info, as always - thanks!
    I found that off-brand cheap microfiber towels work just as fine... and if you need more than one, it pays to buy a large one (beach towel size) and cut it to the sizes needed. Doesn't fray at all. I also like to use a (triangular) bandana cut from a microfiber towel.
    Concerning pillows, take a look at the "Exped Air Pillow UL", it's lighter (and cheaper) than the StS one.

    • @LongWhiteGypsy
      @LongWhiteGypsy  Před 4 lety

      Great advice, but I HATE microfibre. The tiny little fibres get caught up on my dry skin and I can't stand it, hence why I ended up going with the Airlite. And thanks for the tip on the Exped pillow... I tend to go for Sea to Summit stuff because it's often easier to find in NZ.

    • @scorpiodesign6990
      @scorpiodesign6990 Před 4 lety +1

      @@LongWhiteGypsy Actually I was referring to towels with a fabric similar to the Airlite, not the ones with "fluffy" surface. I thought those were also microfibre, but I might be wrong. Sorry for the confusion...

    • @LongWhiteGypsy
      @LongWhiteGypsy  Před 4 lety

      ScorpioDesign You may be right, perhaps they are! Problem is it’s so difficult to find anything even remotely dissimilar to the ‘norm’ in NZ, and furry microfibre towels are the norm. But I will keep my eyes peeled! Thanks again ☺️

    If you haven’t bought a new pillow yet, then I couldn’t recommend enough the Exped REM pillow! Absolutely amazing! I’ve tried so many pillows including the s2s one (still not bad though) but hands down, Exped REM pillow beats them all. Why? 1. Has a foam layer which makes the pillow soft esp for your ears = superior comfort 2. You can remove the outer layer and wash it = cleaner 3. Since you can remove the outer layer, it means you can repair the pillow = no more deflated night’s sleep. So comfortable and functional 🥰💤

    • @LongWhiteGypsy
      @LongWhiteGypsy  Před 4 lety

      Thanks for the tip Donna! Looks like the Exped pillows are popular so i'll definitely check them out. I think the REM is a little heavier than I would like to carry, but thanks for the recommendation anyway :)

    I agree you need to have a pillow and a hot cuppa .
    I have done some very rocky ,sandy and muddy tracks and trail runners are my go to you can go for longer without tiring and trail runners have good cushioning that look after your feet better just dont buy cheep shoes as your feet not be happy. I am now wearing Hoka trail runners as they have a slight rocking sole on them. I find them great even on hard surfaces . Hoka shoes come in a wide tow box option i am picking my new ones up tomorrow from the shoe clinic there service is amazing .

      @@LongWhiteGypsy I am wearing the hoka Challenger atr 5 . The manager of the shoe clinic phoned the Hoka rep and we discussed whether the speedgoats are better for likes of the TA and the suggestion was the Challenger atr 5 was a better shoe for the combination of trail and road walking also the Challenger atr had better cushioning .
      I am super happy with the Challenger atr 5 and my new pair of wides are just being broken in now and give great toe box room.

    All Blacks! I played hook on a very terrible team.
    I have decided the Fillo pillow is worth the extra weight. Also after many years and miles in heavy leather boots, trail runners with gaiters are the way to go. Unless you are climbing McKinley, or Aoraki, go with trail runners. Good video.

      @@LongWhiteGypsy i live and mostly hike in the Northeast United States.. New York, New Jersey and PA. Plenty of rocks, roots and hard ground. Been using them the last 2 years.. even in winter with frozen ground. I have bent every stake i ever used, except these. I actually use a mix or the DAC and mini ground hogs. Use them for my hammock tarps, my bivys, tarps, and tents ( Nemo dagger or Zpacks Duplex).
      Honestly though if u using groundhogs or minis, i would say they just as well.. i mix them up, just in case. Anyway.. loving your videos keep at it and thanks for posting fun content..

    Thanks for all your videos. My biggest question is about fuel (gas canisters) resupply in the South Island, how are is it to get gas canisters? Can you post them in your resupply boxes?

    • @LongWhiteGypsy
      @LongWhiteGypsy  Před 2 lety

      Good question! There are some small shops and stores along the way that carry supplies of gas for TA hikers during the thru hiking season. Places like St Arnaud, Arthur's Pass and Hanmer Springs are the hardest to find supplies at, but I think the small shops there do carry a small supply of stock. You can't post gas canisters in NZ due to postage restrictions, so you have to pick them up along the way. I try to make sure I conserve as much fuel as possible through long remote sections such as the top of the South Island, by using things like pot cozies and only cooking one or two meals per day. This means a 230g canister can last me as long as a few weeks without replacing. You've reminded me, I need to work out how many boils my stove and fuel setup gets me when on trail...

  • @moeysonful
    @moeysonful Před 3 lety +1

    Thanks for the video! When you say 10 degree do you mean farenheit? I was thinking of getting a 20F, do you think it would be too cold for NZ? Thanks :)

    • @LongWhiteGypsy
      @LongWhiteGypsy  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes I do mean Fahrenheit. It equates to -12C but be careful because these are not official standardised testing ratings. Due to the nature of a quilt (having an open back) they can't be officially tested, so this is EE's best estimate. And this means it will totally depend on the hiker for how warm they are on trail. I started in early November, and even then, there were 2 or three nights on my way down where I had to put EVERYTHING on to stay warm. But I also know hikers who used this same bag and never had a cold night on the trail (sometimes even sleeping in just a liner and nothing else). I'd say if there's a possibility you're likely to feel the cold, go for the warmer quilt every time. The weight difference is minimal.

      I've seen a lot of people (especially backpackers and seasonal workers) using something similar to these in NZ. I'm not a fan of microfibre towels, and they tend to be a little heavier for hiking, but I know they are very absorbent and dry quickly!

  • @robertdean1579
    @robertdean1579 Před 4 lety +1

    I prefer hiking boots, for better ankle support and to minimize rocks getting in my shoes. Are either of those issues a problem for you with your trail runners?

    • @tommy_casual
      @tommy_casual Před 4 lety

      I find that hiking boots will exhaust you quicker. The heavier your footwear is, the harder on your legs it'll be.
      If you want to keep rocks out of your shoes, wear gaiters. They're helpful.
      Ankle support isn't really something you need to worry about unless you're worried about your footing or prone to ankle problems.
      I have easily-rolled ankles, but I find that hiking in my Altras is still way better than my boots. Mostly because the Altras keep a better grip on the ground than any pair of boots I've ever owned or tried.
      That's my experience, anyway. Plus, if you get your shoes wet on a crossing... have fun waiting for dry boots. Altras will dry out pretty quickly, especially if you're using different (gel based) insoles.

    • @LongWhiteGypsy
      @LongWhiteGypsy  Před 4 lety

      Robert Dean I found that the more I hiked in my trail runners the stronger my ankles became and so I never had any big issues with the lack of ankle support on the North Island. As far as rocks go, I used dirty girl gaiters (absolutely excellent, highly recommend them) and didn’t have any issues either. On the South Island, with the larger rocks and spiky bushes I may decide to upgrade these to some more heavy duty gaiters. I’d definitely say trail runners are better on the long road walking sections than hiking boots are, unless you’re already VERY comfortable in your boots over long distances on hard ground.

    • @djsomers100
      @djsomers100 Před 4 lety

      Get a pair of light weight gaitors for rock protection. Light shoes make a world of difference! I have never actually had a pair of boots that actually give you ankle support. Perceived? Yes. Actual? No.
