KSP: Falcon 9 boosted SLS to the moon in RO

  • The best version of SLS... That will never fly :(
    Edit 1:
    The capability presented here is a bit to optimistic as the burnout mass of the core stage is significantly lower than it should be. This flight might still be doable, but the margins would be a lot tighter.
    Edit 2:
    With the M1D getting another 12% thrust increase the margins are no longer tight, even with the more massive core. TWR at lift off is now around 1.28

      +Robert Willis No, it wasn't a sound design. It was fundamentally flawed. For various reasons, they couldn't develop a really large chambered engine, and so had to cluster an obscene number of smaller ones together. These engines also relied on what was at the time the new tech of staged combustion. So, we had a situation where there were 30 new tech engines in the first stage alone, ( 6 times more than the Saturn V, for example, and thus at least 6 times the points of failure incorporated into the design)...plus they had a spectacularly complex system of fuel and oxidizer manifolds between these engines and the tanks (which were spherical and thus an inefficient design) and two additional stages to the overall vehicle, thus adding all those additional layers of complexity. Plus, they had to control this thing during its ascent by dynamically throttling these engines...which is crazy complex...and the Soviets lacked the advanced computer and electronics tech the Americans had access to in order to pull it off. Basically, Korelev, though a genius, was getting waaay ahead of himself when he first penned this thing. Could have been ego, I guess, believing himself capable of solving the problems with such an outrageously over-complicated design. We'll never know if they finally ever actually got it figured out, because there was never a successful launch. I'm work in design, and I can tell you, half a century later, that even by todays standards, such an insanely complex system was always going to be doomed to simple statistics.

      From what I've read that's caused by the KSP garbage collector. Actually I had the same problem, especially with this rocket. I was able to reduce it significantly by setting up a profile for KSP in the Nvidia control panel with the max number of prerendered frames set to 1.

    Cluster a bunch of 5 segment solid fuel rocket motors together and you have a booster that can send anything anywhere.

    • @AGKfan64
      @AGKfan64 Před 7 lety +3

      No way. Clustering lots of boosters can be dangerous you know. The excess acceleration can seriously injure or even kill humans or kerbals. I refuse to build RSS rockets with s***loads of boosters unless I consider redesigning core(sustainer) stage.

    • @maccollo
      @maccollo  Před 7 lety +8

      The acceleration from using four 5 segment boosters isn't actually that bad. The boosters are already to small for the SLS core with a big upper stage, and their thrust actually drops over the two minutes that they are active, so the acceleration peaks at around 3 Gs.

    • @AGKfan64
      @AGKfan64 Před 7 lety

      ***** That's only possible if Kerbal SRBs have thrust curve, but as of now, I have to split just one SRB pair into several SRB stages, each stage giving different TWRs by changing the amount of fuel and thrust. I use SMURFF mod instead of RealFuel or Realism Overhaul mod BTW.

    • @hakont.4960
      @hakont.4960 Před 8 lety +1

      +The Dockpacka Keeper The key to rendezvous is combining patience and careful orbit adjustments. You also have to use the nav ball a lot, keep the prograde and pro target vectors aligned and keep the velocity under control and you'll get there. Scott Manley made a good tutorial video on this, it helped me understand the concept. For my first rendezvous I built two crafts specifically designed to be easy to maneuver during docking. I kept the relatively light with 4 way RCS thrusters equidistant from the center of mass of the craft. I put one in a perfectly circular orbit to make things easier, then I launched the second one and flew it closer nice and slowly.
      It gets much easier after the first successful time, it's like something clicks into place in your brain, you get that "OOH, that's how you do it, of course!" moment. :D

    • @cdw2468
      @cdw2468 Před 8 lety

      The key to it is knowing you nav ball and practice. Like the other commenter, I recommend Scott Manley's video, as it was my rendezvous teacher

      Maybe, eyes are just enough sucseptible to see stars, whils camera isn't . On the Moon small density of ionized dust wouldn't be enough to scatter light from ground thus making stars visible.

    • @kv_ira3468
      @kv_ira3468 Před 7 lety

      Even with the daylight? I thought it would be impossible to see stars in the daylight of the moon... Mainly because of the reflection of the light on moon's surface, offuscating the stars.

    • @seanspoerhase3878
      @seanspoerhase3878 Před 6 lety +1

      KV_IRA the reason you couldn’t see stars from the pictures on the moon was because the moon reflects a lot of light. In order to be able to see detail on of the surface of the moon and of the astronauts. They brought the exposure of the camera way down. Therefore, you aren’t able to see the stars on the Apollo pictures.

    • @chesterwang3070
      @chesterwang3070 Před 3 lety

      Most of the "terminology" is pretty intuitive. The only things are probably the abbreviations.
      TWR: Thrust to weight ratio (TWR is the ratio of how much thrust you are producing and the weight of your rocket)
      LEO: Low Earth Orbit
      TLI: Trans Lunar Injection (a burn to raise your apoapsis (the highest point in your orbit) to intersect the Moon's orbit, ahead of the Moon's current location (as the moon is gonna move while you're going to it))
      Some more stuff:
      Propellant: Fuel
      Orion: The name of the spacecraft (Orion is a real spacecraft currently being developed)
      Capture burn: The burn to decelerate enough to which the gravity of said object (in this case the Moon) is suffiecent to prevent you from exiting it's SOI (sphere of influence, or the sphere in which it's gravity is the main influence to an object)
      Escape burn: The burn to accelerate enough to which your trajectory will take you out of it's SOI.
