WHO IS BUNCHARTED?
We're Michelle and Alex, a travel-obsessed American couple living abroad in the Netherlands.
In 2020, we quit our jobs to travel the world, and... yeah, that didn't happen. So in 2022, we decided to make an even BIGGER change, packing up our lives (and our cats 🐈), moving from Austin, Texas, to Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. Subscribe for new videos like this every week!
I remember Queens day in Amsterdam was absolutely off the rails mad. People swimming in the canals, drunk people having fun everywhere. The smell of food and pot in the air. That seemed quite civilized by comparison. Thanks for sharing.
That's how I remember Queens day (now Kings day) as well. Same in Utrecht. Stages with bands playing on every corner almost. They don't allow selling alcohol on the streets anymore for 5-10 years now but before that it was normal. It is a nice video but not the typical Kings day it is known for abroad.
Those were the days!
Seeing my country through your eyes is a real treat ❤
You guys are the fourth channel of Americans who moved to the Netherlands and vlogged king’s day in Rotterdam. I loved your outfits!
while we didn't get a chance to interview the king, we had great outfits... and tompouce! 😂
I don't think the Tompouce is a typical Kingsday thing, but what makes it special is that the glaze is Orange for this occasion. Normally, a Tompouce has a Pink topping. (The HEMA has them all year round, for example.) When a Dutch sports team does well in the worldcup, like voetbal (soccer) and they play a finale, our country gets "oranjekoorts" (fever) and you might see Orange tompouzen as well. When Beatrix was our Queen, Queensday was celebrated on April 30th, that was not her birthday, but her mother's birthday. Beatrix birthday is on the 31th of January, and that's way too cold to have an outdoor national holiday party, so she kept the April 30th date. (FUNFACT: For years, many tourist came to Amsterdam on the wrong date, after the change from 30 April to 27 April.)
@@vlinder0108 No it’s not. You can buy a tompoes on any day of the year. The only difference is that on King’s day the frosting is orange instead of pink.
I always feel Koningsdag can be split into 3 types of celebrations: flea markets and games for children (our city had soooo many things children could participate in), the parties/festivals for the young adults (and Kongingsnacht (Kings Night) which is when most of the partying happens), and then the celebrations and city the King goes to (like my mother always wants to watch it on TV and she what they're wearing and cringe at all the songs children perform for him😅). You better get ready for May 5th! it'll be Liberation day with every province hosting a (free) festival where a lot of artists perform. There's one in Rotterdam as well!
And then there’s getting completly sh*tfaced the night before.
I am really proud of our King and Queen and especially since their daughter Princess Amalia was severely under threat by mafia this year, I think they had a lot of stress securing this event.
most important thing is that you enjoyed it and had a lot of fun. whether it be in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Leiden, Groningen or in a non-city environment: Kingsday is a National Thing supposed to be for everyone, everywhere in the country
Great to see you enjoyed Koningsdag...
10:16 De Doelen in the background. I used to work there as a soundengineer in the 90’s. Miss those days.
You guys are awesome :) It is really impressive how quickly you adopted to the Dutch culture in general, because it differs in so many aspects from the American culture. And thank you for sharing, it is really fun to watch!
I think that the Kop van Zuid is one of the greatest spots in Rotterdam, I am actually surprised that it was not extremely crowded at Hotel New York. And, you chose the best outfit for the day. If you go orange, then go all out.
People have been writing papers about how to eat a tompouce.
haha! the dutch family sitting with us told us the “messy way” and the “clean way” (removing the top layer and eating it separately).
@@buncharted I always eat the bottom first and save the best for last and eat the cream with the top.
@@buncharted Eating the top layer separately is what we did as well. Another option is to remove the top layer and put it at the bottom, so you have a double layer of pastry with frosting in between.
@@buncharted a baker once showed on tv to put it sideways, then you can supposedly easily cut it into bitesize pieces.
@@buncharted that is how to separate the tourists from the Dutch 😂
I always eat the top first, and then the rest. That way the pudding does not squish out.
Good to see you enjoyed kingsday, it is a nation wide party where everyone has fun.
Kingsnight, the evening before kingsday is when people get drunk. Kingsday itself is a bit more Family oriented.
Thanks, guys, I enjoyed seeing the slice of life and the local culture.
Hey you guys. Hope you had some fun. Next party in Rotterdam will be when Feijenoord becomes the champion of The Netherlands. Make sure you experience that!
in 3058
Yes and it only hapens once every 20 years, so don't miss it! 😉🤭
@@Species6079 Harsh, but closer to the truth than most feyenoorders would like to admit..
Although all bets are off now. Ajax is an absolute mess at the moment and PSV isnt exactly great either, and they will lose their most important players again for not too much money probably.
My bet would be on AZ for next years championship. They have been doing very well and with their youth team winning the youth league, I can see some of those boys doing well in the first team.
@@Species6079 I didn't know 2017 and 2022 are 20 years apart. Since when is that?
I love your vlogs! Tnx.
Great orange outfits you have got at home already 😊👍
Lol your kings day in Rotterdam was so different from ours! We came over to Afrikaanderplein and saw them walk right by us. And we only had to wait for an hour, during which the belly dancers and Caribbean carnival parade were doing their final practice, was fun.
You guys are blending in perfectly! This was a fun video. There are soo many different little traditions surrounding this day all over the country, it's worth exploring that in the years to come. This year we gave both our kids 5 euros to spend on whatever the hell they wanted at the free market. It was cute, watching our 3 and 5 year old negotiate with other children. In the end, the 5 year old had bought a toy train and had 2 euros left for his piggy bank. The 3 year old had spent his money on 3 different toy cars.
that's such a cute idea :)
I agree there is a new building called Lee Towers absolutely amazing!
the best tompouce from the netherlands comes from my city in culemborg. on kingsday they sold 7500 of them in 4 hours and the line was insane.
best day of the whole year, one big fleamarket all over the country
Seems like quite an eventful day. The tompouce looks so good! I'd love to try it.
i can’t wait to eat it again 😋
@@buncharted it is called "tompoes "
@george its like the spelling from gamer above “ tompouce “
@@liavanson8687 in Belgium they say tompouche. In the Netherlands they day tompoes. Tompoes means tom cat. The5te is also a cartoon character Tom poes from the 1950's.
Literally translated it's a Tom's pussy 😅
i have never seen such quite kings day :) Amsterdam is crazy and even Haarlem
Rotterdam has a more relaxed and nice Kings Day. Amsterdam is crazy, because it is much compact city, less space, yet crowded, with a bunch of very drunk people. I prefer Rotterdam.
The big party with a bunch of drunk people is the night before Kings Day. And on the day itself they have a hangover, making it more of a family day :)
Nice to see you joining in in our national color. People dress in orange for the same reason that carrots are orange... serious, carrots were originally purple.
People dress in orange because of the House of Orange, where the king belongs to, they had a castle in Orange a place in France.
The orange dress with the colored stockings were OKAY
Hey hey, new subsribers here! aah cool that you had your first kings day celebration! It's fun to see other youtubers perspectives on Kingsday! fun video! have a good one!
Kings day for me is the flee market you can score some great stuff hope it see a haul next year🎉
Kingsday is the way we celebrate that we live in the Netherlands and we're proud of it
Always look for some stages where bands or DJ's are playing.
Local people usually know the locations and the type of music they play from previous years. Often found on squares with a few bars.
Not sure if that happens in Rotterdam but it does in several cities and there is nothing better than ending Kingsday dancing to some music.
oh yes, we saw a lot of that here - plus the big concert at the end of the king and queen's parade 🎉 lots of people dancing and being merry!
Cool video! Tip: De vlooienmarkt in Nijmegen, in het Goffertpark is geweldig. Super groot! Ik ga er ieder jaar naar toe op Koningsdag. ❤
Kingsday is as you can tell a big event in the netherlands. In almost every city of the country are music festivals. So most people between 16-30 are having tickets and they are gone for the whole day to drink and dance😂
I went to a small festival the day before and then spend the next day (actual kingsday) on the couch resting up😂it was fun!
The zipping up and music really made me laugh! 😊 that’s why when eating the tompoes you take the top part off eat it and then eat whatever is left. You usually start to meet the drunk rowdy (belligerent) people after 17.00 hours. Also try kings night in The Hague the night before kings day next year. 😊
The druk party is the night before kings day, kings night. Where there are alot of bands and djs outside.
In the early days, the the people were visiting the Queen with a parade in front of palace Soestdijk.
Enjoyed thanks for the show haha next year go to Amsterdam real party in the Jordaan and the 9 straatjes fun fun, lots of live music and drinks everywhere. Party boats in the canals, way more young people with a lot of energy.
You could check out Arnhem next time. The entire city Centre basically turns into a festival area with 5 or 6 different podia and Food trucks everywhere.
I agree. Lots of parties but not too big to get lost.
I think you guys missed the best part of Kingsday!
A succesful one for us is:
1 at 13:00 a BBQ (or earlier if you can) hang out and drinks with friends.
2 Then move to a park where there's markets (Like vondelpark) then spend some money on stupid, ugly and crazy things and have fun buying gifts for your drunk friends and play all those silly games and buy lemonade from kids.
3 Then in the afternoon you find some places in the streets (like the Jordaan) where they play music and party till 20:00 and then afterparty if you can or go home and be less hungover the next day. Lots of walking either way around
i think we only missed the bbq - there was one in our neighborhood though!
Vrolijk koningsdag 🎉
I guess that's true..Kingsday is a day we celebrate as a comunity..and that is where we find eachother and meet as being Dutch.🎉
The stalls in the centre are reserved spots. So all the commercial stuff is going on there, whereas the rest of town is whomever gets there first I think.
I used to dance from dusk till dawn on queens day.
Hilarious how you eat a tompoes!
Proper way is to take the top biscuit off and eat that. After that you can more easily eat the pudding and the other biscuit. Some people prefer to use a gebaksvorkje (little fork) to eat the pudding and the biscuit as last.
Btw best tompouces in the Netherlands are made in Maassluis by Holtkamp bakery. Just a 30 minutes ride by metro from Rotterdam….
Another fact about orange. The founder of the Dutch state in the 16th century was William the Silent, also known as William of Orange. This was because he was also the Prince of Orange, a small region in France. This is the origin of the colour
The cargoship was there that day to keep us dutchies supplied with whatever we need.. :P
love your vids guys was born on Katendrecht lol nice to see that in your vid 🤩
The best way to eat a Tompoes. Is by taking off the top layer, take a bite of a lower half, and than instantly of the top layer. Now you got both layers in your mouth but no mess. ;)
I love to see how you try to blend in with the orange outfits. Good job!!! 👍🏻
I would say kingsday is oriented towards family very vriendly but if you want to party their are enough for example i went to supersized kingsday its a very big hardstyle event close to Eindhoven. In the Netherlands we are known voor big festivals so of course we have those on kingsday haha.
The party with drunk people is on kings night. The night before kings day. It’s nice to go out and drink some bier or wine with friends!
The weather does not matter us dutch as long as we can drink lots of beer the most on koningsnacht 😅😅😅
Huh, funny idea how I might have passed you guys by when I was there walking around. Though considering the massive crowds of people in the city, it would have been impossible to spot you two.
Utrecht, is the place to be, they even have a Kingsnight before Kingsday
Next year Kings night in Utrecht. To me it's the best.
Tom Poes is a well known literary figure from the serials of Marten Toonder. Along the way he seems to have snatched the original spelling of tompouce.
11:40 Well, if you had been in the province of Brabant, in cities like Den Bosch or Eindhoven, that would have looked and sounded more like big party... and probably some drunk types as well, but that would be the case near the bars/pubs.
I have a feeling you missed out on a lot of celebrations. Keep your eyes on the (local) newspapers in the weeks before King’s Day. There are lists of all the activities and performances etc. You really have to plan your day if you want to fully experience it
😂 so funny you dressed in orange❤
Amsterdam is heel anders. Veel meer feesten, de boten in de grachten zijn geweldig, maar ook het vintage (kleding) shoppen is top. Vooral in de ochtend.
Eating a "Tompoes" first take of the orange lit of and eat that and then the pudding part. Good luck next time. Groetjes.
perfect video... next time i will be at kings day in 2025 .. great video... best wishes from ISTANBUL🤩
Enjoy your are great
The secret to eating tompoes less messy is flipping it on its side
So in your voyage to experience (almost) everything The Netherlands has to offer, is there also a spot for Carnaval on your to-do list? Especially in Noord-Brabant and Limburg it's quite a big celebration. :)
yes but we want to do something interesting with it - so not this year, but very likely for 2025
@@buncharted Very nice. Carnaval is really popular in the south, so you can't go wrong there. But when you're looking for the craziest costumes besides a big party, my vote definitely goes to Maastricht. These people take it to another level. :)
Even though the King visited Rotterdam this year, Kings Day in Utrecht and Amsterdam is on a whole different level. I prefer Utrecht over Amsterdam!
If you want to be part of the flea markets on Kingsday, make sure that your hunt starts at 7am to find the best treasures. And if you want to sell, then be there before 6am 😅.
😅😅😅
The king and his familly name is ORANJE NASSAU, of van Oranje.
a to late there are 2 days... you missed koningsnacht!! nekst year.. good luck
Fijne koningsdag vandaag 😎☕🍷🍺🌂🎈
Waar waren jullie vandaag om het te vieren?
Trunk people ware there yesterday evening and night. Enjoy this day.
Big love for you, 😋
I will you learning the Netherlands. I'am born and lived here 58 years. After mine divorce I'am moved. But we Blokzijl were in the 1600/1700 yeats very rich with our trades with Amsterdam, See the houses we have also the Amsterdam houses in little. (waterconnection) waterroads to Friesland and also a touristic place for boats and camings, B&B, restaurants, hotels. All on the water.
wij zijn vandaag in dordrecht 😄
Yeah, the flee market indeed does give this community spirit on Kings Day. You have been there when you were a kid, and later as a parent, uncle, or whatever. Everybody understands what's going on and for whom it is for etc.
On May 5th (bevrijdingsdag), there will be a different atmosphere (more loud music and drunk people) an when Feyenoord celebrates the championship...... , well you will understand. Stay away there if you do not like crowds. At the other hand, you can celebrate it in the Hofplein fountain. This opportunity does not exist often without getting arrested......🤣
Come next year to Utrecht to celebrate Kingsday.... huge free markets and one big celebratory party with drunk rowdy people mostly the night before... that's called King's Night, that's like the evening to celebrate, in Utrecht then also the free market is allowed and will continue until 6 pm on King's Day and on King's Day itself still very crowded and people still partying at the bars and the café's, outside on the streets, lots of music etc.... So for partying you start the night before. Amsterdam will be more or less the same..... and PS.... your sound is always soooo good.... and your microphones are like invisible....(So don't forget: King's Night (Night before King's Day is just as important... then at night you can already stroll alongside the free markets, which Utrecht is known for and also Amsterdam, non-stop until like 6pm the next day on King's Day,)
how to eat a Tompoes, you eat the deck first then the rest :)
Big street party is the night before Kingsday, with alot of music,
I like to celebrate in Amsterdam, there is where the real street party is.
You should try it one time, its a big party
Your in the rong town!!! Go next Yes-R to Amsterdam 🤪🤪🤪
Learning to eat tompouce is the most important part of intergration 😁💪🏻
Sloppy pronounced slappy in Dutch we say Slap quite funny hahaha
😉😊
Best Tompouce in the Netherlands: Holtkamp Patisserie in Maassluis.
Next year go to Amsterdam for Kingsday. In Rotterdam there’s usually not too much going on to be fair.
I vote for the zip up onezie!
Queen Wilhelmina first introduced the queens birthday a gift to the people to sell their belongings tax free, so even kids are allowed to earn and keep money. It’s been law and tradition ever since
As a republican (anti monarchy, not the american political party) I sat alone at home being sour and staring out the window, saying grumpy things. (Not at all what I did, I had fun of course, but what I feel I should be doing)
You missed the party and drunk people. Party is at Kingsnight, with is the night before Kingsday.
There must be a limerick about tompoes and Tom Cruise ... (have fun)
there once was a couple, “buncharted”
who struggled to get limericks started
they fed some tompouce
to a cat named Tom Cruise
then Tom Cruise the cat went and farted 🤢
@@buncharted Well done, a standing ovation, you even got Tommy the cat (Primus) in there!!!
You are such a nice addition to Holland. Too bad you don't live in Amsterdam.
* Holland is a geographical region and former province on the western coast of the Netherlands. The area of the former County of Holland roughly coincides with the two current Dutch provinces of North Holland and South Holland into which it was divided, and which together include the Netherlands' three largest cities: the capital city (Amsterdam), the seat of government (The Hague) and the home of Europe's largest port (Rotterdam), where Michelle and Alex live.
Adding to the remark ‘too bad you don’t live in Amsterdam.
You know what they say:
There is the Republic of Amsterdam and the Kingdom of The Netherlands.
Two completely different worlds…
Just 'wingit', it is the only thing you can do.
You wanna party? Come to Amsterdam, it was maybe too crowded but there was a party!! 👍🥂🍾
The date doesn't always change qween Beatrix was born in December so she kept the date on her mother's birthday and our future qween amalia was born in December and i dont think we will ever celebrate queensday in the winter
Next year
Just stay out of Amsterdam and you'll have a wonderful day ;)
😂😂😂
Sweet kitty. What’s his/her name?
that’s sashimi :)
Hey Guys, I have a "010 Kingsday" flag/banner for you, if you still want one.
ah, thank you! but a nice person gave us his flag on kings day 🧡
You are eating the tom pouce wrong. Take the top cap of and eat the top cap. The eat the pudding with bottom cap.
So you thought Rotterdam on King's day was crowded? Try Amsterdam! Spoiler, it is 100 times more people at one tenth of the space.
i'm scared 😂
@@buncharted Absolutely stay away from that, I went there once with friends and family and we were physically stuck on a bridge trying to cross it, literally staying in the same position for minutes, wedged between people who tried to cross it in both directions, and we almost suffocated. It was just too busy to be fun anymore.
Did queensday in Amsterdam once.... NO THANK YOU
end the monarchy!
Why? Are you jealous or something? Not a fan of monarchies myself but at least the one we have is the least stupid one.
The King/Queen can stay as long as we don't have to be a 50/50 political system like in the US or the UK. ;-)
Side note: Every 5 year this is an official holiday (the years are 2025-2030-2035 etc), which is a holiday that still have many people working, it's often a sort of tradition to swap that day with penticost or the other spring christian day(s) aside from easter, because then you have like a very long weekend. I believe that's on a monday the day they swap it with, forgot. Make sure to get paid a higher pay that day is the most important thing ;)
isn't that liberation day? or is that kings day as well?
@@buncharted I was gonna say: "oh yeah, you are right. I mixed those two up", but it has more to it. Copy paste from the government website (translation with DeepL):
Is Koningsdag (April 27) a day off?
Koningsdag (April 27) is an official holiday in the Netherlands, but not everyone is off then. If April 27 falls on a Sunday, Kings Day is celebrated on Saturday.
I am an employee
Are you employed by a company? Then you are probably free on King's Day and will continue to be paid on that day. This is the case at most companies. Do you want to know for sure if you are off work? Check with your employer. Or check your contract or collective bargaining agreement to see what is stated about this.
I am a civil servant
Are you a civil servant? Then you are free on King's Day. Different rules may apply to specific positions. Examples include the police, defense personnel and academic hospitals.
I am a pupil or student
Are you at school or studying? Then you are most likely free on King's Day. Schools are almost always closed on King's Day. Do you want to know if your school is closed? Check with your school.
I am a parent with a child attending school
Do you have a child going to school? Then your child is most likely free on King's Day. Schools are almost always closed on King's Day. Do you want to know for sure if the school is closed? Please check with the school.
@@buncharted Here's liberation day btw:
Since 1990, May 5 has been a national holiday celebrated annually, but this does not automatically mean that it is also a day off for everyone.
A number of collective bargaining agreements stipulate that May 5 is a paid day off only in anniversary years, once every five years. The National Committee for May 4 and 5 advocates an annual national day off for everyone on May 5.
Many Dutch people are free once every five years on May 5. There are also companies that choose to give their employees time off every year. These are mandatory days off that employers can distribute throughout the year as they see fit. Because the government allows employers to determine whether May 5 is a day off, it is always wise to consult your own collective bargaining agreement or employment contract. School children are in many cases free on May 5 because this day often falls in the May vacation.

ugliest building? what
it’s the tallest building in rotterdam and it’s so generic looking. i wish they did something more unique, like the art deco style of the new orleans building, for a building so notable…
@@buncharted Well i agree with that, but this is 2023 and the people behind these kinds of projects don't care about what we think and only care about money. Most skyscrapers in the US that are build today don't have anything special either. Seems like that time is mostly over. Cooltoren looks better tho in my opinion, but its nothing compared to what we used to create.
