- The Avett Brothers perform the title song from their new album "I and Love and You" on the Late Show with David Letterman 09-28-09
The Avett Brothers hail from Concord, North Carolina and have been playing their unique blend of country punk, "grungegrass," and pop for several years. They have done it the old-fashioned way, working their way, playing shows, winning fans one at a time, often by word of mouth.
Their first "big label" album "I and Love and You" was just released Tuesday, September 29, 2009.
The Avett Brothers- one of the most talked about up-and-coming bands of 2009, and sure to be on the scene for many years to come.

I was laying in bed supper pregnant the night this aired and had absolutely no idea what I’d name this baby. This October Brooklyn turns 10. I can’t wait show her this!
Seth singing, "oh but it's just a waste of time" is pure heaven.
Haunting, soulful uncomplicated music.
A young Severus Snape on the piano. ;) I love this band.
It's inconceivable that 35 people could dislike this. Maybe they're not really people.
Whats more amazing is since the four years you posted this, only four more people have disliked it.
I am 39 and using my GI bill to go back to school to be a nurse. Just got accepted to LIU Brooklyn. Starting a new life and this song will be playing when I load the truck up with my stuff to my new life in NYC.
I love this band because they actually make me feel something every time I hear them. Sometimes they bring up old memories that I have. I can't even articulate my love for this band.
Ain't it like most people? I'm no different, we love to talk on things we don't know about.
The whole song he stood there so strong willed, like he could stop a train, while singing and proclaiming his feelings. It really says something about his ability to express emotions and be okay with that and what the song holds behind it.
you are very bad with words
Dumbed down and numbed by time and age.
Sweet song!
You can tell his lyrics mean a lot to him :)
First of all, great song and performance.
Second, I agree: great musicianship.
Third: arguably one of the most spectacularly mistuned banjos of all time...
As a banjo player myself it was painful to listen to (luckily the mic was too low anyway)
There’s gotta be something wrong with their instrument manager this is the third live vid I’ve seen where his banjo was out of tune
The gift of their music. Enormous.
I remember it like it was yesterday. I woke up on the couch just in time to see Scott standing there with the banjo. I was immediately hooked when they started singing...
To everyone that owns the album, be sure to read the beautiful written segment inside the case. It was written by Seth, and it is GORGEOUS.
Nothing like the harmony of brothers They do it just as beautifully as the Everly brothers.
I dont want to be a hipster but I have this awesome childhood memory where I went to see them at the botanical gardens here in richmond VA I dont think I was but 7 and my mom got me to go up and get their autographs and it was awesome cause it was a small show and I got in touch with them a while back and they said they remembered the show and they only got paid 100$ and it made their day that a 7 year old wanted their autograph XD I still have the CD cover they signed
Every song by these guys gives the chills worse than a MN winter. This is music at it's best.
The best ❤
I don't know why, but I really love the mistuned banjo there. It just adds a touch to a "weathered" feel. Makes you think that everything around you is gone, and you're just living alone in a shack, in the middle of nowhere.
Pretty much the best band on earth. Enjoy them.
Agreed.. And they still perform with the same "feeling" Im happy for them.. Its time good music gets recognized..We've all had them to ourselves for long enough now its time the world has them.. They will help a lot of broken hearted people. There could be someone down as down but hears this then hears something else theyve written and it saves their broken heart. Thats what they did for me and I hope the same for someone else.. This album is an EPIC "Gleam" record.. God Bless you and the Avetts
It's not about hitting every note perfect, it's about feeling.
Great song live or from studio.
Avetts' putting the hometown on the map folks.
Their older stuff is amazing just as this new stuff.. This without a doubt one of the most beautiufl songs ever written by anyone... This band is incredible...
the avetts at the top of their game.
avett brothers and mumford & sons are both absolutely amazing bands in their own ways. no need to try and decide which one is "better". they're both fabulous.
I saw them live in July, killer band.....everyone needs to see them live
They are such amazing storytellers. They are right up there with Wilco and the Replacements as some of the best ever.
I know this is 11 years old but I love Wilco and the Avett Brothers both so much!
This song is a mellow tune. They still have a ton of energy, it's just a chill tune. It's amazing too. They haven't lost anything, they are just trying new things which i think is great.
perfect, perfect track, perfect perfect record and a perfect explanation to anyone who wants to know what real music is....
Art. Creative. heart. Free..... Feelin' it? Good for you.... Not so much? That's good too...... that's what art is all about.
My favorite band atm...i cant stop listen to them!
These guys are UNBELIEVABLE live.. you can't tell from this video but man, do they rock out! And it's so sweet to hear them thank the crowd over and over again for being there with them.. they make me want to find a nice North Carolina boy and settle down, lol.
They remind me of one of my favorite bands of all time, The Counting Crows.
i don't think anyone really has a need to worry about the Avett Brothers or their fans.
enjoy them and the time you have.
You must see these boys! Remarkable shows. Love this band.
people just hate when there use to be favorite band gets exposure like they can be the only ones to enjoy them...calling them sell outs and or posers or what ever Seth and Scott has changed their apperance many times since there beginning and that doesn't change their unique talent no matter how they look and I say I would like the whole world to hear them not not a few selfish and jealous people . I am glad there not in there back yard where I can't hear them!!!
These guys can do no bad. Also, very real and genuine. Refreshing in this time of canned, over produced music.
Love the group . Believe it or not . I Learn about them through a book I read .
Martha Hulse who wouldn't believe that?
yes, he is like in the wrong key with his banjo. they tune their instruments down so they don't break strings when they play fast. so proud of myself, just learned that today from a musician friend of mine :)
I really like this they are a good band
It was really important that he say these words clearly so everyone could understand just exactly the words he was pronouncing were, and in what sequence.
well for one mumford and sons has got this irish pub beats that no one can deny is the greatest sound EVA!!!! gosh...
If you went through a breakup around 2009-2011, good chance you listened to this song.
well for one mumford and songs has got this irish pub beats that no one can deny is the greatest sound EVA!!!! gosh...
these guys are amazing every time.
Love this just learned to play on piano good shit and the two brothers sound so good together
Seth's hair looks so shiny and lush.
hey, i saw them at grassroots as well!! i first saw them at grassroots 2005, when there was absolutely NO ONE there, and then in 2006, and in 2007, i got to hang back stage with them for a few hours and it was absolutely amazing =)
they put on a good live show
Yay! Awesome! So happy for those guys!!
Bad ass band
Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons both wonderfully refreshing in their own separate ways...very "real" and God knows we need something real in the face of all the over produced crap out there today.
Awesome please come back to Florida guys we Love you here
The words of the song have a special meaning to me. I was born and raised in Brooklyn and still have many friends and family there and around the NYC area. There's still a very large part of me that never really left, and frankly never will. If I knew then how much of the "Mecca of all Great Music" it would eventually become, I may never have left it in the first place.
Great song & wise words as I left my childhood sweetheart for the last time this last year ... sc
Proud Carolinian right about now
Wow ! I've never seen this. A great performance of one of my favorite songs.
They're fucking magical! Bring on the wrong notes. Just goes to show that what? Oh. They're HUMAN! Fucking incredible.
The Dude on the piano reminds me of ashton kutcher when he was in "That 70's Show"
Amazing song.
Amazing band
my band of 2010
I Love You
If you like this song, you might like the album Emotionalism. They are great but most definitely cross genres.
Happens to the best. Heard it sung perfectly elsewhere.
I hope they keep comin to the high noon!
@TheatreFracture We, are headed north...
this is great stuff, takes me too warm afternoons with a fan by the window is a sultry New York...
I agree!
@mike33385 That's what I love about live music. Doesn't always have to be perfect. Just have the feeling and behind it.
i've just stumbled across these. And must say they are amazing. AMAZING!
They are equally, if not better live!
How do you expect a group of musicians, with as much talent as the Avett Brothers, to pigeonhole themselves into one style of music? Give the new album a couple more listens. You'll grow to love this one too.
Saw and heard these guys for the first time last week (Sep 1) at The Gorge when they opened for Dave Matthews. Holy crap Awesome! I love it when they push their range and sing 'loud'. You guys are awesome! Off to buy some albums! Thank you again from Canada.
they seem nervous here, but damn did they kick ass when they came back and played at the grammys
Music isn't about trying to be the best.
Well said!
you could always buy their album. *gasp!
I think I'm gonna marry someone from North Carolina...
We do have our gems.
i cant listen to any of their vevo stuff in my country? i should just pack up my bags already
i cant to see these guys in may there playing in cumberland maryland
SWEET!
The began with a punk rock and one day simply picked up a Banjo and slowed the rhythm and it felt right .
these guys are the best band out there right now. Even if seth screwed up the banjo parts
"yeaaah mmkay ladiesandgentlemen"
Dude on the piano is a hybrid between Eric Bana and Ashton Kutcher's hair on that 70's show. Anyway great song. Cheers.
The new album is pretty low key like this song. Nice performance.
This piano dude looks like Crispin Glover in the movies where he had long hair.
summercamp 2011!!
mumford and sons cover avett songs, and they use the kick with the lead singer, and are in similar genres. BUT the avetts kick their ass.
The Band part 2. love em though.
@Warbrain88 i think mumford and sons's lyrics are soooooooo deep and they're passion is unrivaled. i've just started listening to avett brothers and i think i'm going to be obsessed with them soon, but they both seem to have the ability to capture complicated feelings more than any other bands i've found. and the reason i like avetts already is cuz they sound more similar to mumford and sons than any other band i've found; they're in exactly the same league
They aren't going mainstream - their new cd sounds like their old cds. This performance was more mainstream because it was letterman and they are trying to get fans
Too Cool for Skool ...Grungy Punky Bloograssy Biutifuuul ...
so tame
That's true. This was not a typical Avett Brothers performance, which is unfortunate for those who had never seen them before. Maybe they should have done Laundry Room. A little bit more energy in that song.
you are right. I expect them to fit in many musical genres as they have in the past...that's what I love about them...you can't pin them down to one category. You are right, the new album, the more i listen, is good (not as good as Mignonette and Four Thieves Gone, etc. etc., but good). I guess I am just saddened to see their primary instruments changed on Letterman for the sake of Letterman...it seemed to be a very tame performance. I was expecting them to rock it out!
ohh brooklyn brooklyn take me in
♥!
They did lose some of their bluegrass appeal with this new album, but artists evolve throughout their career and the Avett Brothers are no different. I personally really like the new album especially "Laundry Room".
