What It Takes To Become A Pilot - inside United's Simulator

- CNBC got an inside look at United Airlines Flight Training Center in Denver. At nearly half a million square feet, this facility is one of the largest airline training hubs in the world. All of United's 12,000 pilots come through here for initial training and return every 9 months to stay up to date on flight procedures and safety protocols.
The campus has 31 simulators, each costing $15 million to $20 million. And United plans to have a total of 40 in the next 12 to 18 months. Pilots must complete training in the simulators before flying in real planes.
United Airlines operated more than 5,300 flights on the Sunday after Thanksgiving alone.
Watch what it was like for CNBC's Erin Black to fly a United Airlines Airbus A320 simulator.

Inside United Airlines' Pilot Training Simulator
This doesn't even mention the years and thousands of hours of flying required to get to the point to train in those sims.
Devin Graves I’m not a pilot but I’m sure you don’t do 1,000s of FLYING hours before being allowed to use a simulator. Unless flying general aviation and basic planes that you can without a type rating how would you gather these 1000s of FLYING hours generally only achieved commercially without using the simulator first (type rating)?
@@blinded3646 you don't use these unless you have 1000s of hours of experience. They are not available to civilians.
@@blinded3646 you need 1000s of hours to fly mainline. Which is where you train in these so yes you do.
@@blinded3646 You can't fly for an airline without 1500 hours of flight time. You also wont be flying an A320 with 1500 hours as a new first officer. So yes, you need thousands of hours to even get to that point in your career.

@@diegomagadan4182 Have you actually done your research? The school system in America IS broken, and when I mean broken, it’s REALLY broken. Students have stress over assignments and tests because in most cases this makes them feel or think like they’re stupid which they’re not. It’s also outdated because the system was meant for children to be factory workers and help the economy. The only “real” way to get a good education is to have daddy’s money. Being rich helps you A LOT. So don’t say “ dOnT bLaMe ScHOol”.

pirozig zigwam yeah I get that, however she is doing a short informative video on pilot training so part of her research when writing the narrative should be the technical terms. Thankful for all amazing Pilots and flight attendants 🙌
I have had two experiences with big simulators. Years ago, I was a private pilot, but I realized that as much as I love flying, my skills could have improved. In 1990, UAL had a deal for its top passengers. 500K miles could be exchanged with RT tickets for two to Denver, one night at a hotel, and an hour in a simulator. I knew enough (much more a reader than a flyer) to ask good questions and understand what I had been told to do. I now have more than 3 million miles as a passenger. The simulator was great. A take-off from Denver and a flight to SFO. We finished with the Potomac approach to DCA. Years later, I was in the Alitalia club in Rome, and there was a good simulator (the controls were perfect, but no motion). I was OK. All my fantasies of being a pilot are gone.

the tradeoff for the egregiously high amount of training/high barrier to entry is the reason the safety numbers of commercial flying are as close to perfect as you can get

Wow, the media taking a legitimate journalistic approach to aviation? Getting actual expert information? Whaaaaaa
Pilots could be trained far more quickly ..the actual mechanics of flying a large jet is not that difficult. During WW2 , young guys in their early 20's were flying 4 engine bombers over Germany. The major difference I guess is life priorities were different back then.
The difference is that this plane has more than 200 passengers and the reputation of the airline, but the 20yo with a four engine bomber only has the war-seasoned, 30+ airmen crew and a few bombs on board. One is designed for a safe and smooth ride while the other is designed for destruction.
Young guys in their early twenties are also flying airliners, at least here in the UK. There's no 1500 hour rule so as long as you pass flight school an get accepted by an airline you're basically good to go. Most of the time is spent learning the general factors of aviation and getting licenses on multi-engine, instrument, night, upset prevention etc. Type rating still definitely takes a while though. You're learning how all the systems work and what to do if it all goes wrong. Sure, it's easy at face value, but things can pile up quickly and you need to remain calm with situational awareness
People also frequently crashed and died in WW2.
@@pilotvlogthe issue with the UK is without the 1500 hour rule, pilots aren't paid as much. in addition to that, getting to ATP in the UK costs more than getting to CPL in the US (the point where you can become a CFI and start making a tiny bit of money off your training) if you look at flight schools.

Only after you've done 200 simulator hours and show that you can follow the standard operating procedures to the letter are you allowed to conduct your first real passenger beating.
As long as you can drag someone off a plane your good!
The 30 days of training is nothing. What isn’t mentioned is the college, previous flight training at either flight instructor, Military, regional airline, getting even the call for selection to attend pilot training at any major airline, passing ground school , passing company ground school, getting selected for the specific aircraft, systems, emergency procedures, passing all the training going to the line and doing OJT with a very experienced training Captain, getting the OJT and signed off as a newly minted First Officer. After all that work you get to sit reserve for a few months. Very rigorous process and the simulators that UAL and pretty much every major commercial airline around the world are top notch. They literally can simulate about every scenario, fog, snow, ice, rain, single engine, turbulence, system failures, pretty much anything flight deck related. About the only thing that can’t be replicated in a flight deck simulator is medical. That’s where the cabin trainer comes in and for the flight sometimes the only option is diverting which is of course done from the flight deck. The sim can replicate emergency descent, loss of cabin pressure, The last airliner simulator I visited could even set you up at the gate and set up a full motion flight from pushback to taxi and take off. For a news reporter and not exposed to the pilot community every day I think she did pretty well.
thats so much hard work. I have alot of respect for pilots people overlook them.

5:39 United Pilot: we won’t compete on safety
He means that United will not compromise safety to make more sales, as do any other US carrier.
It means that industry and government will openly collaborate and share best safety practices with each other. They may compete in other areas such as service, products, routes, prices, etc, but when it comes to safety everyone is on the same team.
So “we won’t compete on price” means that they won’t offer the best prices right? “We won’t compete on safety” suddenly means we WILL offer the best safety?
They won't compete on the safety of the passengers when a flight is overbooked
