Sonic Mania may be lacking in originality, but it more than it makes up for it in creativity. It’s easily the most polished Classic game in a long time. In fact, I’ll be the odd man out and I say I like it more than Sonic 3 and Knuckles.

I would love for them to make a sonic Mania game but instead of it feeling like Sonic 3 with slight updates I'd want it to feel like one of the Game Gear games but with slight updates they had their own unique feel and I liked it

Press Garden is one of my favorites because of how much it changes it up randomly. I believe it's just a testimate to the game's variety. Plus I'm fine with oil.

Man I thought I was the only one who loved titanic monarch
I was surprised to learn that people didn’t enjoy Titanic Monarch. I loved it for everything, it was like Eggmanland if it was in a Classic game.
Umm... wouldn’t having Classic Amy be playable break the continuity? Sure, maybe this is an alternate dimension but this still has the same characters and personalities from pre-Adventure. Amy’s story in Adventure was about gaining confidence and that was carried on by the Advance trilogy. Having Amy would break that and just wouldn’t really make sense. I dunno, just my opinion.
Valid point.... but then again who knows what's actually cannon anymore and whether it still will be next Tuesday... i swear the sonic multiverse is more complicated than the Zelda timelines and pokemon multiverse combined.
I'm still dealing with the fact that Classic sonic games are a different universe than the adventure onward games. also what's up with new classic Sonics's blue... is he a different sonic from genesis era Sonic?

What a good way to start my day, with a review from cooper!
Ordinarily I don't purchase a game more than once but I bought Sonic Mania twice.
I downloaded it on Switch when it first came out, bought the physical PS4 copy, and I also bought the Encore DLC on the Switch version.
How's Sonic Mania Adventures, it's amazing that I wish they could make an entire series out of it?

Wait a second. That pinball machine is fully 3d. Therefore, they managed to get pinball physics to work in 3D. If Sonic is a platformer with pinball physics, then the Mania devs have managed to get the classic physics to work in 3d.

Why does everyone think Encore is after Forces? IT’S WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS IN THE MANIA TIMELINE WHEN SONIC GOES INTO THE PORTAL!
The game manual itself states that Encore Mode happens after Forces...

I actually always liked Oil Ocean Zone. In Sonic 2 my least favorite (most hated?) levels were probably Wing Fortress Zone and Metropolis Zone.
Great review as always, i love this game to death (also i know ya might not like me for saying this but i oil ocean is probably my 3rd favorite stage in the game :P)
Also i like to think that the new special stages were originally gonna be the super emerald stages, since they were originally gonna be in the game

I agree with you on Oil Ocean but I don't think it's that bad. I feel like it's just there. I love the interactions with the fire shield and the submarine gimmick but everything else..... They could've done a lot better. Definitely prefer this new version of OOZ rather than the one in Sonic 2 tho.
No oil ocean is even worse than the original plus they didnt put mystic cave and mystic cave IN MY OPINION is the only enjoyable level in sonic 2

Awesome review! I agree with basically everything you said, like oil ocean act 2 being annoying, that mania's final boss didn't outmatch 3 & Knuckles', that 3K is better (generally) etc. Tbh, I feel you on the burnout. I'm burned out by Spider-Man on the ps4, but I'm up for playing mania again. Maybe you could then start playing Spider-Man ps4? Because I do highly suggest it! It is a damn fun game, I'm just personally burned out by it.
So let us go in reverse in what we play, eh? Haha

I don’t know why, but I don’t like Mania. I beat it once and get bored every time I go back to play it afterwards after only one or two levels. Meanwhile, my friend only plays Mania right now and has been replaying it for a month or two. To be fair though, I don’t really like any classic Sonic game, with the only exception being CD, oddly enough.

I wouldn't call the blue shield useless in this game because, as sonic, it still let's you use the drop dash unlike the elemental shields
