Socks are great! They come in all different colors and sizes; there are long socks, short socks, fuzzy socks, dress socks… But the best part about socks, other than covering up those nasty feet, is that they keep us warm. But there are some people out there who argue that wearing ONE sock is better than wearing two socks. There’s no way, right? Today, we put that theory to the test!

As a person who goes barefoot around their house I feel like you guys did a major oversight in not testing no socks.
Another oversight is doing socks then one sock for both participants in both tests. Matt even stated that he'd learned from his mistakes on the stairs, which would indicate he had a technical advantage over his previous runs. Should have had Steph do 2 sock/1sock and Matt do 1 sock/2 sock and/or have them do an additional run with the first condition

you forgot about the most important factor, comfortability. i can wear 2 socks or none, but wearing one sock and having the other barefoot is too uncomfortable.

This may be far-fetched, but Mat's habit of removing one sock, usually the left, might've caused his left foot to adapt and heat itself up more than the other. If they tried it both ways, they could prove or disprove this.
I hate socks, sleeves, and prefer shorts over pants, have always been that way because they make me feel restricted and I've noticed especially in recent years that I'm naturally warmer than family members who, growing up, were taught to dress for the season not neccessarily the weather.

Hey matpat i had an idea for a theory, you know how perfume ads are… really weird? What if you did a test where you watched a perfume ad and did a smell test and tried guessing which perfume the ad was for? I was wondering if they actually worked or if they were all just completely random
I agree with Matt on the the running experiment that 1 sock obviously works as you have more grip with your bare feet. But I agree with Stephanie that 2 socks is still the best to wear especially with shoes going outside. Wonderful to see Stephanie again hope we can see more of her in the future again. ☺️❤️

Big miss on the lack of barefoot testing, which is what I do during warm months.
But there are other things to consider too. In cold months with slippers, socks minimize the sweat going into the slippers. And there's also just the weirdness angle... you'd have to defend an inherently weird style/clothing choice to everyone else.
So, yeah, the only viable choices are two socks or no socks.
I am on the side of no socks, and I will say I really liked the back and forth between Matt and Steph!

Honestly from all of the channels this theory is my favorite. Steph needs to be apart of more theory videos! You two are adorable but more importantly this was an incredibly fun and silly theory and it seemed like you two had a blast making it.

Just thinking of ideas could you guys ever do a style theory episode involving shoes? It’s kind of nuts how expensive they are and I kind of realize something most shoes have a point on the top which crunches up your toes so they can’t move as much and spread out. Just thought it might be fun.

I have a suggestion for a style theory! I wish they explain why do we need to change perfumes each season? Or like why are there scents that won’t work if it’s like summer or winter? This always bothered me when I was a kid, but I use it as an adult. Like I can “detect” that this is for summer or this is for winter. Love the video! For me the reason I wear socks at home isn’t thermal regulation or traction, but for the cushion and the layer of protection between me and my floor.
This was such a silly couples argument between you two to prove who is right and I am totally living for more theories like this, it's so wholesome in a way lol
Three thoughts:
1) More theories like these, please! 🎉
2) Others have mentioned no sock trial and half-worn sock trial, but I would also like to propose sticky bottom sock trial (usually found in warm sleeping socks, they look like the bottom of kids' onesies)
3) Why does MatPat not just start the day with one sock? Or have a designated mini sock hamper? I always joked about putting a hamper under my brother's desk for his socks (which he took off in pairs) because I could always see like a dozen down there...

I think Amy should do an update video on this, but with no socks as an option. In addition to the added traction, it very often makes it easier to just walk outside in the summer for quick things like taking out the trash.

I could never wear just one sock... because then I'd be getting all sorts of kitty litter on my feet! But actually my preferred foot covering is actually slippers- they protect my feet from kitty litter, keep my feet warm, and are less slippery than socks. But it's easier to take off a slipper than socks, imo.
Slippers are superior! Especially when you have pets.
Maybe you can try a litter mat or different litter? I dunno, some track worse than others. I had a cat with the fuzziest feet imagine who who track litter granules into my bed, it's the worst

My favorite kind of slippers are the 1s with the ankle straps to help my slippers stay put on my feet when I need to wear and use them even if I know that its detriments and limits are that they will take longer and even harder to take off especially if I buy or got a bad pair of strap slippers or sandals.

I had this impending feeling that he would make a theory about this. It’s also because temperature regulation thing is the reason why I sleep with sweaters and covers on while having the fan on 24/7. Mostly because I prefer sweaters and I i get hot or cold easily, plus the one sock thing actually feels refreshing once you try it

I started wearing socks inside out because of an autistic-coded character played by Sean Connery in Finding Forrester.
I really like the idea of the one sock strategy because of most of his argument the heat idea was wrong but everything else was pretty correct and I tried it myself and it was pretty fun so I like the one sock method even though it freezes my foot

3:11 there was a 2008 study debunking the losing lots of heat through head assertion. I didn't find the source for hands and feet. in cold weather though the body restricts blood and thus heat to extremities but don't know about +/- room temp

I have been binging the theory channels for a bit while working on my sock paws (I am a therian) and I happened to come across this video. Quite the coincidence.
I love the more relatable epesodes purely based on a dispute between partners. Just fun. And the ones where they kind of just hang out.

This was the last video I watched before heading off to sleep and it sure influenced my weird dream last night lol.
Except I was completely barefoot, running around my local Hobby Craft store searching for dark brown sewing machine thread. I eventually found it, headed on over to the tills, and the person in front of me was 1 sock on their right, bare on the left. We looked strangely at each other and I said "I guess you watched that video too" and laughing. Person responded with "Yes! It was such an eye opener". Meanwhile my excuse for going completely barefoot was the rushing need to buy the thread and get back home to finish my project XD

As someone who is currently recovering from a Trimalleolar fracture and dislocation of my ankle from missing a step going down stairs, I highly recommend you follow the advice of using hand railings and not racing down stairs.
