Motormax 1/24 scale 1979 Chrysler Lebaron Town & Country Wagon: amzn.to/3Gd04qS
The 1986 "Gran Detroit Farm and Country" car in the 1987 movie "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" is a pivotal element in the film's narrative. This car, based on a 1986 Chrysler LeBaron Town and Country, is a green, wood-paneled convertible that becomes a temporary mode of transportation for the main characters, Neal Paige and Del Griffith, as they navigate a series of comedic and chaotic travel misadventures. The car undergoes numerous calamities, including a malfunctioning power seat recliner, getting sandwiched between two transport trucks, and nearly burning to the ground, adding to the humor and challenges faced by the characters. Despite its mishaps, the car perseveres and continues on, making a lasting impression on Hollywood history. The "Gran Detroit Farm & Country" car is a caricature of the perceived shortcomings of Detroit automobiles, featuring wood-grained sides, oversized fake wire wheel covers, and a big hood ornament, which contribute to its outdated and tacky appearance.

“Do you feel this vehicle is safe for highway travel?
Yes I do. I know it’s not pretty to look at but it’ll get ya where ya wanna go”. 🤣🤣🤣 loved that movie.
Same!! 😄
Ditto 👍
Indeed a true classic😉👍
"Radio still works. It's the darnedest thing."
I feel like we may have strayed away from facts about the film car on this one.
John Hughes was hilarious. In that slow pan shot down the side of the car showing all the damage you see the right rear tire is a save-a-spare, indicating they had a flat tire incident we didn't even get to see! 😂
Indeed, lol😉👍
This car in this movie is an absolute must-see every year for our family. It’s one of the very few Thanksgiving-themed movies ever made. Candy and Martin are stellar together and should have been cast like this in more movies!
Indeed and same for my family as well😉👍
Never has a K-car been of more use, nor met such a deserving fate! Absolutely love this movie, laugh like HELL every time I watch it!
Indeed, it just never gets old!😉👍
Great movie. Still holds up after all these years.
Indeed it does😀👍
With you guys 💯, fun movie and Martin & Candy were a great pair 😎👍🤘🔥
I've seen that movie a dozen times, but never saw the connection between the Gran-Detroit and the Family Truckster. I love movie trivia like that! Thanks for the video and happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Cool, glad you got something new from it and thanks😉👍
Me and my best friend went and saw this movie on Thanksgiving day 1987, we were 20yrs old then. Every few years since then we watch it during the holidays when we have the same weekend off.
Ah, nostalgia is oh' so nice indeed 😉👍
Nice you two keep your tradition alive! Even after all those years.
Speaking of FWD's in snow, I remember going to work in my '90 Geo Metro 3 banger thinking "this snow is bogging me down bad" Till sitting at the light I noticed the hand brake was on.
Lol, yep; that'd do it too 😀
I had one of those, even with a piece of cardboard directly on the front of the radiator in the 10°F weather we get quite often in Pennsylvania that thing just wouldn't make heat, in temps that cold you could have drained the coolant and removed the radiator and drove that thing all over the place in those temps and the engine still wouldn't have gotten up to a real operating temperature, that thing was colder in the winter than an old VW Bug with rotted out heat risers, you had to dress warm in that thing.
@@dukecraig2402 Wow.
@@CarStarz42
I bought that thing in the early fall when there was still leaves on the trees, come winter when it really got cold, and we had a cold one that year, the heater wouldn't make enough heat to defrost the windshield, so I put a thermostat in it thinking it was bad, didn't change a thing, put another one in that was the hottest one I could get, still no heat, then I put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator which wasn't any bigger than a large coffee table book, it looked like it could have been a heater core from the back of an ambulance, still nothing, then I took thing's apart so I could get the cardboard right up against the front of the radiator, still nothing, so I put cardboard directly on the front and back of the radiator, not one bit of difference.
I doubt the thermostat was ever even opening, that little all aluminum 3 cylinder engine apparently was bleeding all it's heat out through the block and head, I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that I could have drained all the coolant out of it and removed the radiator and it still wouldn't have heated up fully to it's operating temperature, it only had an idiot light with no guage but if it did I'll bet if the air temperature was anywhere around 15 to 20°F or lower it would have stayed on C.
With a decent set of snow tires on the front of that thing and it'd go anywhere, it was like an Army Jeep, and about as cold as one to.
@@dukecraig2402 Man, that's wild for sure, lol
I loved this movie. It was the Tommy Boy car adventure movie before Chris Farley
Never thought of that, but yeah, pretty much, lol 😀👍
You didn't show the part when John Candy is dressed like the devil in that sequence. That was hilarious!
True, when you make videos like this, you have to keep clips really short as not to cause any © issues, so had to shorten it with priority on the parts that show the car being damaged, was indeed a hilarious scene though; such a great movie 😉
Totally agree. Love that part!
FOUR F-CKING WHEELS AND A SEAT!!!
Thank you for this. Right on time ❤
I really don’t care for the way you’re speaking to me.
LOL, yeah that scene sure create a stir back then, but was just SO FUNNY!😉👍
"May I see your rental agreement?"......"I threw it away!!"...."Oh, boy!" ......(you know the rest!)@@robbygaume600
Great movie, a girl and I watched it twice one night. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
😀👍
Best use for a K car ever! Awesome movie! The one hotel scene was filmed locally in Gurnee, Illinois at the El Rancho motel (IL 21at IL 41).
Cool😉👍
"you're going the wrong way!!", "eh, they're probably just drunk"....
Lol indeed😉👍
My favorite part😆
"How do they know where we;re going?"
this is wild! i was just thinking yesterday that it would be neat if you did a video on this car! thanks!
such a great movie. slight correction: if memory serves those non-intercooled turbo 2.2s had about 146 hp.
Cool😉👍 Yeah, there seems to be a lot of varying HP numbers on those, not sure why that is; so I just went with the "around 100HP" as most ratings I've see for those were between 90-110ish for whatever reason. Good to know though.
where's your hand? between two pillows. THOSE AREN'T PILLOWS! loved that movie.
lol, great scene.
I have the special "Those Aren't Pillows!" edition DVD
@@BakedRBeans 😉👍
Just an FYI, those 2.2 turbos made 146hp…which was like 305 Chevy kinda horsepower lol 💪

Probably was close to a 305 Chevy in power and weighed a lot less! (So it would have been a lot faster!)
Well you got me! I have seen this movie countless times & is one of my all time favourites, yet I didn’t know what the car was called. (I knew what it was based on though) You have done another excellent job of research and teaching us a thing or 3. Thanks again, and keep up the great work. I see your channel is growing by leaps and bounds. Congrats!
Yes,but a lot lighter and rev to 6k.With 3.40 gears they were quick cars for that time!
Chrysler first generation turbo 2.2 introduced in 1984 was called the Turbo I and made 142 HP, it had a mechanical wastegate, in 1985 a computer controlled wastegate was added upping it to 146 HP.
The next one called the Turbo II introduced in 1986 added an inner cooler and made 176 HP.
The Turbo III introduced in 1991 had a Lotus designed 16V head and made 224 HP.
There were several other versions of their turbo 2.2 engine's like the Turbo IV that had variable nozzle technology but were installed on very few cars.
In an interview with Carroll Shelby he said that working with the Chrysler racing team for their factory race cars they were getting 700+ HP out of the 2.2 engine, that's not bad for an engine that stock in my mother's 1981 K-Car you had to shut off the air conditioning to keep it from dropping under 45 MPH going up the mountain behind our house.
Thanks for this one.
Planes trains & automobiles was a hilarious holiday flick.
The scene where the car is in that death spin had me laughing to tears...👍🌲

most surprising fact to me was the 001 Viper going for just a touch over the quarter mil mark. i woulda thought over half a mil easy for 001. and i'm not even a real big fan of Vipers. oh well ya just never know. another excellent video my friend. thank you.
Indeed, glad you enjoyed it and thanks👍
I know right! Viper #1 AND owned by Lee Iococca.Million dollar easily!!!
@@taur86466 right. Iacocca was an icon in the automobile industry. i didn't even think about that. like i say, ya just never know what a "special" vehicle will go for. still a shocker to me.
I literally just received this DVD in the mail from Amazon just a couple hours before this video dropped
Cool😉👍
This ought to buff right out no problem - John Candy a real funny guy
Lol, indeed he was; everything he was in was great😉👍
Steve Martin said that reading the scene with John Candy fighting the power seat is what got him to do the movie.
It was a super hilarious scene for sure😉👍
This is what i love about this channel, it talks about cars we don't know much about, i'm totally addicted to it...much love from Brazil ❤
Thanks and glad you are enjoying the channel😉👍
A classic buddy comedy ,rip john
Indeed 😉👍
Rest in peace John Candy
Indeed, he was one of the greats for sure👍
Love how you used the music that was playing in my head as soon as I saw the thumbnail for the video! One of my all time favorite comedies.
😉👍
I liked the part where they are driving along, and "The Mess Around" is on the radio, and Del "plays" all the instruments!
Sooo cool!! 😎 I wondered about that car! 👍🏻👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it 😀👍
Happy Thanksgiving brother and thanks for this great video. John Candy left us way too soon. 😢
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it and yes he did.
And John Hughes died young, as well.@@CarStarz42
In the original script, the car is said by Del Griffith to be a “1986 Lincoln Towncar”
Yeah, they were planning a big Mark III Continental at some point too, not sure why they went they way they did, probably something to do with branding something, who knows😉
@CarStarz42 It was probably changed to the Chrysler because they wanted a convertible, as that makes the "post fire" scenes even more comical.
To all in USA, have a great Thanksgiving.
Peace from England.
Thanks much😉👍
One of the cars you showed looked like John Voight's car, but that was an 84' formerly belonging to "John Voit"
Cool😉👍
Its a film I only saw last Christmas but one, as I was never sure if it'd appeal to my British sense of humor. However I thought it was brilliant, a first class festive watch!
It is indeed a hilarious movie that pretty much anyone would love 😉👍
Well, this video made me smile, brought back memories of the film. Great subject choice. Thanks.
Glad to hear that and you're very welcome😉👍
Excellent Video and you must have really searched and compiled a lot of info to make it and as a huge fan of the movie I learned so much I hadn't realized while watching it. Thanks Much and new subscriber today~!!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it and welcome aboard. There will be a new video coming out today, so stay tuned 😉👍
Steve Martin and John Candy together in a movie, guaranteed to get a laugh. Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.
Indeed! and thanks😉👍
I love this channel! Please keep the videos coming....
Glad to hear you are enjoying the channel and will do😉👍
Hilarious movie.
Indeed 😀👍
Happy Thanksgiving, love the channel and regularly rewatch your older episodes as well. Thank you for taking the time to do these!
Thanks and you're very welcome, glad you are enjoying the channel👍
The power-reclining seats are probably because of the script. In Hughes' original script for the film, the rental car was a "massive green Lincoln" and Del describes it as an "86 Town Car."
Indeed 😉
I never heard Del saying it was a Town Car, but you hear the driver of the Marathon shuttle bus say it's a white Lincoln Town Car .
the wagon queen family truckster was the inspiration for this! 🤣
Indeed😉👍
#2 nit pick: It was their room they smashed into, not the lobby. Great video!
Yeah, guess it was; I suppose the soda machine being so close made be think it was the small lobby area 😉
The side to side power seats or illusion, was great
Lol, indeed and it sure gets the laughs they were after, that's for sure😉👍
I feel this car would be a good candidate for Greenlight's Hollywood line. Although a Lebaron would probably be a tough sell.
Indeed, hopefully it'll pop up in a future GL or AW release😉👍
Cool video! When I first saw the title and thumbnail, I thought "That's kind of a plain car to make a video about" but really enjoyed it! Fun facts and like how you talk about model kits and die-cast too.
Thanks and glad you enjoyed it 😉👍
Great vid!!! 🤜🤛
Thanks and glad you enjoyed it😉👍

For Christmas you should do a video on the Ford Taurus from The Santa Clause movie.
Possibly and of course the "FWD slay" from Christmas Vacation is in my head now too 😉 Thanks for the suggestion👍
Nice, thank you! Happy T-day to you, too.
Thanks much😉👍
Happy Thanksgiving to you too and everybody in your channel.

Just finished watching PT&A and saw this.
Good timing then😉👍
Another great video. Ty
Thanks much and glad you enjoyed it😉👍
Your always surprising me lol. .Nice!
Lo, glad you enjoyed it😉👍
Classic thanksgiving movie. What I want to know is, how did they torch that car without it rupturing the fuel lines and blowing up?
Last thanksgiving I saw a video of a radio DJ in South Dakota who created his own close replica of the Farm & Country. He found an ‘83 model LeBaron convertible in Iowa and brought it home. Where he then painted it that same pea soup green and he even burnt the top off and dressed up like John Candy in the film.
Cool😉👍 Well, the fire seemed to have been kept in the interior only, so they probably extinguished it pretty quick after they got it burnt just enough to to look thoroughly toasted 😉
Actually the 2.2 Chrysler Turbo engine in '86 put out a lot more than 100 hp!More like 150!The non-turbo motor put out 100 hp.In honor of John Candy please do a vid on' Uncle Bucks ''75 Marquis.Or Packard's '77 Vette from 'The Wraith'.Rubber Duck's Mack would be cool too! Love what your doing, keep it up!'Duel's '71 Valiant also.
@@CarStarz42 was that seat hot or what? 😆😆😆

Very interesting video Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks.
3:24 When I was a teenager my grandpa‘s crazy older cousin who was a car salesman, a pilot and had his own aircraft ‘Beechcraft Bonanza’ that he would fly all over the place. He came over to visit one day out of the blue with this exact same car “or close to it“. I do you remember that the car would talk, whatever computer it had it would talk as it did certain things or functions. He said he won the car in a bet and he really liked it. My grandpa told me he was the type of person that would hype up anything that he owned even if it was garbage. I remember every once in a while we would see him flying in circles over my grandparents house/property. A few years later my grandpa‘s crazy cousin died in a plane crash.
Lol, cool story and yeah; I saw some videos of the talking feature, pretty funny sounding, lol.
Those Bonanzas didn't earn their reputation for nothing....
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 to you as well!
Thanks😉👍
I miss those days. Between this car, and the wagon queen family truckster, dragula, and Herman’s coach, K.I.T.T, and Airwolf; my childhood had some iconic cars in it. The list goes on and on. Sad to say, that Vin diesels Charger and Brian’s skyline and eclipse are gonna be my kids “icon” cars. There isn’t any real unique iconic cars like the ones I mentioned now.
I know what you mean friend.
The perfect thanksgiving movie! Thanks for sharing.

There is a 1:64 1983 Chrysler LeBaron Convertible made by the brand "Road Champs" , not the best casting since it was made in the 80's but there is one
Yeah, could only find the third gen '88 and up ones when I was searching for them though, but they probably did; not something that's still made today anyways.
Oh, this is comfortable, this is really comfortable ! LMAO every time.
😉👍
Very nice
😉👍
This car was more like the mini Griswald mobile.
Indeed😉👍
Third generation were awesome. This was a great movie
😉👍
In 1998 I bought a 1988ish tan Town and Country Chrysler (a bland Lebaron mini station wagon) from a dealer for $800. He had it advertised at $1900 but when I said no it's too ugly, he said is it ugly at $900...
I said I have $800 in my pocket...out the door. He said deal....as we were writing up the contract, he said he'd had it a year and EVERYONE said it was ugly. So he was ready to dump it for cost.
Same car in th background at the dealer in Family Vacation.
The trim around the plastic wood panel had faded to splotchy pink. I bought a pint of tan paint and a brush to recover the trim frame. Looked new. Really good leather seats. Spunky pep.
When I brought it home I thought my wife would be upset. She said "I LOVE IT!". She was quirky artsy young wife.
We drove 4 years it till 110,000 miles when the turbo blew. Good buy.
Cool😉👍
Road Champs made a Hot Wheels sized 82-85 Chrysler LeBaron convertible with opening doors and the option of top up or down.
Yeah, I couldn't find much on those though, so they wouldn't be easy for folks to obtain.
There was one for sale years ago at a consignment shop in Roseville Michigan. Same exterior.
Cool 😉👍
Love and enjoy your content. Keep up the good work. I know you have a backlog of choices and requests, but I'd love to see Herbie pop up one of these days. 👍
Glad to hear you are enjoying the channel and yes, that one is on my massive to do list with along with hundreds of others too 😉👍
Fact # 3. I never put that together! Thats so funny!🤣
😉👍
I always assumed it was just a Chrysler LeBaron Town & Country that was painted green.
Had no idea that it was supposed to be a fictional car. lol
Lol, yeah most folks thought the same; as did I before researching it 😉👍
2:45 ish….looks like Carlisle Fairgrounds, PA…layout and pretty much the dead giveaway is what appears to be the PA Turnpike in the background!
😉👍
I have never paid attention to the car in that movie! I always assumed it was a Dodge 600 convertible with all of that tacky stick on wood grain trim!
Indeed😉👍
Yeah, those LeBerons were " junk" when they were new!(. So, they didn't hurt the one in the movie)
lol 😉
I like to think that the Gran-Detroit brand is owned by the same company behind the Wagon Queen brand, explaining their similar attributes.
😉👍

Oh yeah,The '71 Monte Ace drove/rolled over.Good idea,please do it.
Not yet, but it's certainly already on the list😉👍
Yep, it's on the list😉👍
Some of that movie was filmed right by where I live, most the driving scenes where there is snow on the ground, and when the train broke down, The train station is in south Daytona ny . And the highway scenes were north Boston ny on “the 219” between rice hill rd and Genesee rd exits , when they were going the wrong way and when the cop pulled them over , I saw them filming a scene that never made the movie , it was snowing pretty heavy and they had the car kinda far off the road down in the ditch, like they stuffed it in there at 75 MPH . A few camera men were at the front of the car filming what argument is going on. They had a car carrier/ auto transport with four of the green Chryslers and a dark blue cop car , plus the car in the ditch , I think this happened November 1986
Very cool, thanks for sharing that 😉👍
Video idea: Tony Soprano’s 2003 Cadillac Escalade ESV.
I'll add it to the list to look into. Thanks😉👍
Happy Thanksgiving
Thanks 😀👍
Car companies are funny about how their products are used on screen. Andy Griffith is a good example, the run of the Andy Griffith Show he had a deal with Ford, the good guys always were seen driving Ford products and the bad guys all others notably import cars of the day. Was revisited during the Matlock run where his team were always driving Fords old and new and the bad guys often appeared driving GM products.
Lol, indeed😉👍
“I’ve never seen a guy get picked up by his testicles before.”
LOL, hilarious yet horrific thought at the same time!
I have a 1/64 scale 1984 Chrysler LeBaron convertible made by Road Champs. It's black with a white removable convertible top

Completely unrelated, but my first car accident was with a dumb K-car. I did a rookie left turn in my then perfect '79 Camaro Berlinetta and they hit me in the front right. She got fixed good as new but man was I whizzed.

'Heyy could be worse if car caught on fire like right now 😂😂' ohhh how funny this movie has two guys traveling together in convertible through winter time (p.s. not recommended choice if you're desperate to make it home) as series comically miss steps keep our buddies busy with there fruitless efforts in making it home for thanksgiving isn't easy trip to do even nowadays so thank you carstarz for uploading a classic comedy buddy movie and have happy thanksgiving to you bye now.

Yeah, I thought so, but only found the third gen ones when researching, '88 and up, but maybe they did.
I haven't been home in years.
😉
So I watched the replica car sell at Barrett-Jackson and got up close to it at the gala (I was a bidder, not on this car but still) and there was actually a FATAL flaw in the paintjob. The trunk said Del O Griffith (correct). The door said Del O Griffin (incorrect).
Hmm, odd. Yeah looked like it was missing some emblems too; could have been better, but then again; could of been worse too😉
Thanks for the video. Just watched the movie (again). All-time classic. How about next 10x facts about the Ambulance (1978 Dodge Tradesman) from Cannonball Run (1981) or David Carradine's Trans Am from Cannonball (1976). Or of course Rubber Ducks Mack Truck from Convoy (1978)?
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed it and yep; all of those are already on my to do list, thanks😉👍
Yeah I was wondering if that was the same color as the family truckster, metallic pea
