I didn't know what to expect but wow was I blown away by this incredible concert. The BBC Concert Orchestra and 5 awesome vocalists delivered a truly authentic Northern Soul experience. I had tears in my eyes imagining the original artists, writers, arrangers producers and session players having the opportunity to listen to this 2023 full blown orchestral interpretation of their work in the Royal Albert Hall of all places. The singers were note perfect and the arrangements retained the integrity of the original production of the recordings but amped up x1000. One of the best TV concerts I've watched for a long time

its funny after all this time to hear music being played at the royal Albert hall that I listed to and danced to in the clubs of North Manchester, this music was played along Glam rock ,Pop and Motown at The Birdcage in Ashton under Lyne ,friends of mine used to get the train to Wigan Casino for the all nighters and when I started playing music as a DJ at the age 17 even I played it and watched the dance floor fill ....... Amazing

It's about time that BBC 6Music had a weekly show in the schedule preferably hosted by Richard Searling. If 6Music is meant to be about music you don't hear on Radio anywhere else, this is exactly what should be on there.
I can't believe his show wasn't brought back to Radio Manchester, Stoke, etc. following the end of the pandemic, but sadly not.
Looking forward to hearing the Northern Soul specials on 6Music (09/09/2023)

Until 1970 [when Dave Godin officially referred to it as 'Northern Soul' because lots of supporters from Northern football clubs would go to his record shop in London asking for NS records] we all called it 'uptempo' or 'rare' soul.
In fact, I can remember first hearing 'proper' Northern Soul when it was played by a guest DJ at our local Labour Club and we rushed over to him and asked what these amazing records were. He casually replied.....'Tunstall Sounds'.
On further questioning, the DJ told us about the [Golden] Torch Ballroom in Stoke on Trent. At the earliest possible chance, [we were 16 and none of us had a car] we went there and couldn't believe it! I have never ever experienced anything as 'electric' as the Torch. The best all-nighter I ever went to!

I've always been irritated by "inverted snobbery" in any kind of music. People who want the music they supposedly like to be special only to them and a few pals .... I've collected all kinds of music since I was kid in the 60's and only ever wanted to share anything I think is great with anyone that is interested. Great music of any kind should be shared ... not put in a personal "special" box.
Great music is great, whether it is popular or not!
Feel better for that ... 🙂

typical bbc to try and put a label on it, i really wouldn't call it a working class thing as from my experience's of going to clubs in the 70s all sorts of people were drawn into the scene, id say its more like the friendship and all people just getting on with each other, if i was to throw a label id call it classless.
i did enjoy the prom although if im honest id have liked to hear just the orchestra on some of the songs, not to say the singers were bad its just that i liked northern instrumentals.
i grew up listening to so many different genres of music from the psychedelic 60s through punk and madchester but northern is still my go to listen mix tape and you can still find the odd song you've never heard before on this platform.

Nagga munchkin looks very miserable as usual.... can she not find the joy in anything!!! I guess that's what happens when you tie yourself up in wokism knots😂.
Northern Soul wasn't my thing back in the day, but even so, whenever I heard any northern soul music it always lifted my spirits. It is nothing but joyous music and makes me feel glad to be alive😊 and, I still remember the days of the Wigan casino all nighters.
It's fantastic that SM has brought this era of music back into wider focus and I know that my friends who went to the casino all nighters will be overjoyed with the nostalgia and memories the northern soul proms will bring back to them. Nice one Stuart Marconi 👍🇬🇧.

Agree@@PHPW, from what I have been able to see via You Tube I expected to cringe but was blown away at the quality. I would have loved to be there soaking up the atmosphere. I never miss a chance to share tunes here in Florida with anyone who will listen to evangelize this great music. We are all getting too old and falling like flies not to open the box and share with the world. Nothing will ever come close to hearing these great tunes first time around in the 70's at the great clubs creating all those great memories, this comes a close second to creating something to be proud of.
