I’m not even interested in skateboarding whatsoever, but there’s something about Tony hawk that just demands respect lol

@@choosetolivefree You're not a skater either, you're a keyboard warrior.
@@choosetolivefree someone shit in your cornflakes.
Hawk never gave up on his dream of making skating a real sport and getting money for skaters. Nothing but respect. Without him so many skaters we know would not be big time names. He deserves every penny he get's. What a great ambasdor to the sport.
And Tony Hawk spent most of his prime years making very little money. After the 80s boom period of skating ended most skaters made a fraction of what they made before hand.
I keep revisiting this clip, especially the money part. Not because I want to hear rich people talk about getting rich, but because of how unexpected it was for Tony. He has always seemed like a genuine, down-to-earth dude. The original Pro Skater games arguably could have marked the peak of his fame but not even he knew how big they would hit, and I think you can tell that with this video.
Man's passion was skateboarding as a hobby, then sport, then a passionate job, Fortunately it became his life
I remember growing up in the 90's playing the original Tony Hawk demo over and over and over and over again.

1:14 is the single greatest interview moment Tony has ever had. The delivery on the question was perfect.
You could feel every emotion off his face. He knows he’s in for a big number and he’s already sad about it.
$4mil and he's not sure if that was the annual royalty. So we don't even know how much he got paid, he don't even know how much he got paid.
Oh im sure he does hes being modest, that game made billions im sure he got more than that
He was talking about the first big bonus he got from it. The annual royalties are definitely higher than that and go straight to his bank account.

Clever Name you did, I’d give my left nut to have pro skater 2 remaster but they only want £50 for it so it’s a win win
i’m so hype
Because I’m buying his new game and I’m hoping he remaster some more
Exactly I’m buying that thing for sure.
I’m 24 (almost 25) years old now and I grew up playing every Tony hawk game. Every single one. I went to the boom boom huck jams, bought birdhouse boards. Used to skateboard everyday outside before my pre-teens. Tony Hawk was the ultimate role model for kids when I was growing up. As I got a little older I grew out of skating and forgot how big of a part my life it used to be.
Watching this video made me remember how big of an impact Tony Hawk had on my life. A true stand up guy and pioneer to the skating and video game communities.
Robert Shields I put together new set up after 10 years of absence where now I’m 30...just saying 😉🤜
I'm the same age as you I couldn't agree more. Every kid I knew had a skateboard in the 2000s. Everyone knew who Tony was. Everyone played the games. The impact was bigger than I ever realized at the time
I bought the Birdhouse board that was silver with the skeleton of like an eagle on it, felt sad when I broke it. I wasn't HUGE into skating but tagged along with my brother because I always looked up to him and mainly just rolled around...was a good way to get exercise and there were some fun moments I had and scary as fuck moments (going down a huge hill then have a car beep, turn around and lose balance) ate shit doing probably 25-30mph.
Never skated, never played the games, never watched anything about him, yet I’ve always known who he is.
Obviously, Tony Hawk is an all time big icon.
Batman well start skating then 👌😀
Batman shows you how powerful entertainment is and that’s not a good thing
Big disservice not playing them, they're so good. American Wasteland was my favorite.
Batman that’s the definition of a legend then. Big name, bigger brand and insane longevity. The man is still relevant today and a huge philanthropist for children and not just skating, but of course that’s where is heart will always be!
You’ll never see this Tony but your foundation allowed my small town a skatepark, for that Sir. I thank You

Tony Hawk came to the tiny skate park in my town when i was 7. It was so small that he built a way bigger one in the more central park of our city. I spent slot of my teen years at that skatepark and its some of my best memories. Tony Hawk is the real deal.

I used to pull TWO 900s in one jump. The game was incredibly realistic.
I would of liked watching you play, because in Wasteland 2 900s would have needed the moon gravity cheat, or 3 minutes of straight vertting.
give skateboarding a few years someone gonna do two 900s in a row irl 😆
Yeah and that's what I miss about sports games of that era. Their primary goal was to be fun to play and not realistic.
im not into skating at all. but i played the shit out of tony hawk 2,3,4 underground 1 and 2 and american wasteland. those were great games to play thanks tony and neversoft
The ea skate games are great too. Wild that I’ve never ridden a skateboard in my life, yet skating games were my favorite games growing up. It’s really sad to see that they’ve basically been tossed aside.
Those pro skater games were insanely popular.. I'd wager that if they paid Tony $4 million they probably made about $400,000,000 in sales.. Lol.
that was a onetime royalty for the first 3 games. He's probably been paid 20-30 times that amount over time.
@Timothy Dexter Looked up the releases and knowing the size of the market pretty well I'd bet that was his second or third royalty check, the biggest games in the franchise sales wise all came before 2008, and knowing how the market scaled I'd bet
The last three neversoft games sold well but represented the decline in the franchise, typically in franchise decay on annualized releases like we saw in the tony hawk games the sales figures stagnate but don't markedly decline for about three bad "mainline" games. I'd bet he got to the point where he was getting 6-8 million per year but that probably began to dry up by 2010, most everything after Ride was dislike excluding the remake of pro skater 1. I'd bet the franchise put him shy of 60 million over it's life time and that's assuming he had the same royalty percentage on the later games as he did on the early games, which I sort of doubt.
Armory I just googled and siri’ed his net worth, it’s 140 million. Not 14 mil, not 40 mil, but 140.
Games peter way off when they go into classic. Most games target launch day / week sales. You can prolly look up the numbers. The real question is did Rodney Mullen. Jamie Thomas ect make anything in the titles they were in?
Nickelbawker in a country(USA) where 50% of the population makes less than 30k a year you really have to let a 140 million dollar net worth sink in for a little bit. I’m in for some capitalism but this is ridiculous parity
He's about to make another *undisclosed amount* form this remaster!
I don't really like Activision. But I did buy the game because It's honestly an amazing remaster and I want them to make more skating games
@@Beast80001 Yeah, I don't like Activision either. But Vicarious Visions, the developers who put in the work, did an absolutely amazing job. I really hope it leads to more, whether it's remasters of other games in the series or a brand new THPS.

So my whole childhood?
I loved those earlier games, and I’m not even a skateboarder.
That's not really unique. Those games sold millions. Obviously a big portion of the gamers weren't skaters too.

@@2678dhetysjk Who didn't love the Tony Hawk games growing up. Playing a sport in a video game is obviously worlds different than actually playing that sport. On the flip side, I enjoy basketball and follow the NBA, but I'm not interested in playing the 2K NBA games.

THPS on PS1 was a huge part of my childhood. We played it, talked about while we were skating, and I ate asphalt trying to darkslide because it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen.
3 first games were 1000s of hours of FUUUUN
fakk you 4 was awesome too! It's really hard to pick a favorite from the originals
True, but the second game is the absolute best of all of them.
nostalgia isn't a factor for quality...THPS 1-4 got better with every new game and only the maps could be a reason to prefere a previous one over another (3 had the best maps IMO), but THUG was such a huge improvement to the whole series while keeping the slick mechanics that literally never felt unresponsive or clunky. The maps where much bigger but full of cleverly placed skateable environments where you could combo around the whole maps in so many different ways. I mean I get it, childhood memories and such...but as someone who's played every Tony Hawk's game until project 8 from the moment they were released, I just can't agree with anyone saying any of the pro skater games were better than THUG because they didn't replace or change any established mechanics but added some and gave much more content than in the prequels. It was only after that when they started to "smoothen up" the gameplay and adding the annoying rage bar in THUG2. I came back to THPS 3 and 4 every now and then for diversity and whatever but I've always returned to THUG to hone my skills or to just have the most fun from a TH game. THUG2 and American Wasteland were still solid but with and after Project 8 it went south really fast.
Oh and please correct me if I'm wrong in one of my statements...it's been a while and maybe I forgot some superior traits about the first games, but I remember ranking them in my childhood with these arguments. Haven't played any of them for almost 10 years now
Underground was my favorite. I always wanted to use the camera to put my face on the character I thought that was so awesome
I've been watching so many Tony Hawk videos lately.
How could you not love Tony Hawk?? What a cool and genuine guy💯💯💯
They should make a new Tony Hawk underground and make it like a big open world type thing that would be awesome
I think that were they went wrong with 5 not big enough and they were trying to reinvent the wheel.
That is exactly what went wrong with the games ffs!!!!
Project 8 was open world and a lot of fun
THPS4 is the reason i skate😂
ChildSupport real talk same here
A Khan haha dude i remember skating at 7 for the first time and being so disappointed cuz i didnt realize those games were so unrealistic.
It's also the reason I infinite combo in zero gravity, dressed as Jango Fett.

Agreed.
Those games mean so very much to me. Neversoft, Tony, and everyone involved deserves every bit of success it brought them
I remember Funcoland packed with people in line trying to buy the first Tony Hawk game.
What a wholesome dude. Tony Hawk has done a great job staying humble.
Those games are my childhood. Absolutely legendary video games that anybody, not just skaters, could enjoy and love.
Castiel Winchester yeah me too
Epic comment. Looking at the check and goes, i got lunch xD
Tony i saw you in Denmark in Tivoli many years ago back when i was only a teenager stil. You did some skating with danish skater Nicky Guerrero. Thanks for giving us so many good things to remember. The 80´s were the best ever.....
