Well my confusion is Nina had the award and I assume they were prepped with something to say and knew what was going to happen so it's odd that she somehow didn't know that Nina was going to make her a Ru Girl, what was the award supposed to be for then? My guess is production had them do all of that stuff because they aren't going to let guest cameos just do whatever they want so likely it was a gimmick for the show that the girls didn't think through or were okay with doing to get their foot in the door.

Re: trans and black actors, if the role doesn't hinge on gender identity or skin colour then by all means, blind cast.
But if it's actually integral to the story that the character is of a specific gender or race then you'd best make sure the actor portraying the character is that gender or race.
While watching Glee my friend commented - "I don't get why the actor in a wheelchair isn't *actually* in a wheelchair. The fat girl's a fat girl."
It's not true representation if the actor doesn't reflect the character.
