- Wild camping trip into the Cairngorm mountains with the new 2024, Terra Nova, Southern Cross 1 tent.
This was to try it out having been updated with ventilation modifications and the last time I tried one was over 7 years ago. The comments and opinions made in this video are my own and as such please always do your own research as what may not work for me my be ideal for others.
Note that that the tent has lots of good points but feel it may be a little too cramped internally for some people. This is especially applicable if you have lots of gear in winter and as such I believe it may not be best tent suited for winter camping. However please always do your own research as what may not work for me my be ideal for others.
Also missed out on one of the biggest Aurora (Northern Lights) show in years. Forgot to activate my alarm I had set to wake me up later that evening. Doh......
Route Map: (Suggest 'Whitewell' circuit as avoids the 'Chalamain Gap').
www.walkhighlands.co.uk/munro...
TERRAIN: Warning!
Rough paths to Corrour bothy (extremely rough boulder field in the Chalamain Gap) followed by a steep ascent to the plateau. The terrain on the traverse is mostly straightforward rocky tundra, though there are boulder fields on Cairn Toul. However there are huge cliffs close to much of the route, it is extremely exposed to bad weather and careful navigation is essential in poor visibility. For this reason, together with its great length and the lack of escape routes, this walk is classed as Grade 5 out of 5. (Difficult).

Good to see you back out, Ray. My wife passed as I was watching and commented "Oh! We like Ray. There's never any bulls**t with him!" Looking forward to the next one.....
I'll second that.
Lol, Thank you very much. Atb
100%
Sorry for your loss
Exactly what I thought on first reading...@@Perthshire
Ray, you are so honest, so Scottish and so fabulous. You make me smile every time I watch your videos and bring back happy memories of characters I met when I lived in God's own country 1992-96
Thanks mate and cheers for watching. Atb
Great to see you back out Ray, chin up - this video is exactly why I watch you - realism and misery! Love it
We're staying up round Forsinard this week and saw absolutely nothing in the sky on Friday or Saturday... but had a wonderful sleep both nights too.
Thanks mate and Atb.
Good considered advice about the tent, especially as you aren't in the pocket of the company which made it! 👍
Thanks for watching mate. Atb
Good to see you back out there Ray, Cairngorms are one of my favourite stomping grounds. Dinnae worry, I’ve been sitting on my fat arse as well recently.
Cheers Stephen, Atb.
Great to see you out again Ray. I remember those old videos well (u havent changed a bit 😊) and will watch them again as i'll be back in the Mamores soon. We appreciate all the effort that goes into keeping a YT channel going.
Thanks for watching and hope you have a great time up in the Mamores, great area. Atb
Solid content as always. I’ve had one of those tents for 6 years that I was lucky enough to get direct from TN for £250 so at that price seems great value. At 6’1” there is a definitely knack to using it and in my limited experience, the best thing to do is not think of it as a tent but rather a large hooped bivi bag. Totally agree with the condensation comment and ventilation needs to be managed especially in winter. Also it will flex a lot in strong winds as I found out and the solution to that as a couple of others have done is to return the fly sheet to TN and they will add three extra guy points to it (at a price). Also the way I use it with the foot print is to only put the inner in place when you need it. I also got a fly proof light weight bivi style bag that i attach inside during warm weather and that works really well. In short, is it worth £700 plus any customisation costs…hell no! But, as you say if you can find one for sensible money and are aware of what it is, then it can work well. Just my thoughts anyway 👍
Thanks for taking the time to share the info. Agree with what you say and find it interesting that TN can add extra guylines. Why cant they just add them from factory. Atb
I think this was the same day I eventually got back out for a backpack Ray ( Friday 10th). I camped up on Beinn Bhrotain, no idea if the Aurora was showing as I was completely shattered and in my bag about ten. You used the phrase “biting off more than I can chew”, certainly applied to me as did many other of your sentiments about fitness levels etc. Still it was good to be out and also nice to see you out as well, cheers Paul
Nice one mate and can only hope my fitness improves. Atb
Lovely calming video Ray, really enjoyed it.
I also missed the aurora down here in the deep south of the UK. I had been up late the night before, so went to bed early not knowing about the impending display. First I new about it was seeing all the social media posts the next morning. Oh well, never mind 🤣
Bit of a nightmare mate. Always be the next time in about 40 years, :) lol. Atb
It's entertaining and informative waffle tho Ray, thoroughly enjoyed it. Hope you enjoyed a nice fry up at Aviemore with your Ibuprofen.😂
Prawn Mayo sandwiches and pint of mik :) Atb
Excellent Ray, weather was spot on, shame about the tent !
Cheers Paul, Atb.
A great video with an honest review with substantiated talking points. I wish all reviews would compare similar products and weigh up the positives and negatives of them all. At our 'age' we need to follow the use it or lose it method to fitness, unfortunately it takes longer to build up stamina than when we were younger. More trips and videos are needed to keep up fitness. 🙂
Thanks mate. Yes I need to get out more and try and keep some level of get up and go :) Atb
Good to see you Ray. Duomid still reigns supreme 😉
Yep. Atb
as a man of twenty or thirty, therty rests myself. i feel for you. i'm severely disappointed though, you didnt make a snow angel when you crossed over that patch hehehe... ps. i also missed the aurora..... from suileag bothy....... do'h!
Thanks for watching mate much appreciated. Atb
We also slept through the Aurora, went to bed early to be up early the next day for our own hike+overnighter and missed the whole thing. Ah well, next time! Good to see you out again.
Cheers Jim and Atb.
Great content Ray, the price of outdoor gear is shocking more people should be commenting on it.
It is really crazy. What gets me is that you can buy a 3 person canvas holiday tent for less than what some of these backpacking tents are asking. Atb
Nice to see you back out Ray. We know exactly how you feel. We did meall a bhuachaille in October last year then nothing until The Pap of Glencoe a couple of weeks ago. It just about finished us off. We did go the wrong way though, left at the bridge instead of right, over the bridge 😂. Great vid Ray, look forward to more.
Thanks and Atb.
Great to see you back out again really love your channel , you sound like a straight talking bloke who tells it like it is which I like 👍 . Love the area you've just been camping in. I know where your coming from about getting older and losing your get up and go!! 😂 keep doing what your doing because I will keep watching 👍
Thanks Pete. Atb
Your honesty shines through Ray. Social media is not my thing but feel I had to comment. Brilliant video !!!!!!!!
Thanks for watching Steve, Atb.
Welcome back! Try the Enan, it’s a winner on many levels. Keep hiking and sharing, your hill legs and fitness will return 👍
Thanks for watching and may try an Enan yet. Atb
Good to see you out again..excellent pitch and great views...well done on battling against the unfitness...many thanks and best wishes.
Cheers Andy, Atb.
Good to see you out and about Ray.
TN tents are always so close to being excellent but never quite make it.
Yep, tried a few and just seem to miss the mark. Atb
MSR Elixir 2, good tent !!!!
Wow Ray what a great camp that was views forever, it's great to see you back out camping in the hills ,enjoy all your videos keep them coming 👍 👏
Cheers Keith, Atb.
Nice to see you back out hiking Ray. I have missed your videos. Be great to see you out more. All the best.
Cheers Andy and hope you are keeping well. Atb
Great video Ray enjoyed what my wife would class as grumpy old man banter 😂 Have you considered a fjallraven abisko lite 2. Lots of room ,fairly light at 2.07 kg and 4 season. I love it had no condensation as lots of vents and quality 😊atb Dave
I haven't and maybe something I might try at some point. Thanks for sharing and Atb
Good to see you again Ray; hope all is well. The aurora down here in Hampshire was truly spectacular.
Glad you got a great show down there. Atb
Great to see you back - thanks - you’re one of my 3-4 UK outdoor content creators - I really look forward to your videos. Always well thought out and interesting, with the right blend of journey, talking and kit reviews 💪🏔🥾👏
Thanks, much appreciated. Atb
We slept through the Northern Lights too. Ah well. Maybe another time. ATB! 👍
Nightmare mate. Atb
Excellent video Ray, keep up the effort, been out of it for 2 months myself sitting around so I know the feeling
Cheers Steve, Atb.
Another great video Ray, always get excited when I see you've released a new video. Thank you for taking the time and sharing your adventures with us!
Thanks 👍 Atb
Keep the vids coming please Sir. We like your vids we are both 55. We keep our self’s as fit as we can. We have to. Good luck fella keep them coming.
Cheers George and Atb.
Hope you’re doing good Ray. Great to see you back 👍
All good Matthew, Atb.
In search of the mojo and I do believe you found it Sir.. 👏👏👏 I do like that tent but you're right it is snug.. As for the Xmid pro. It's ok up high in reasonable winds but soooooo noisy.. Excellent tent but like most, has it's limitations... I wouldn't take it up in the Cairngorms... Loved all the historical b-roll... You will soon have the fitness and shape of a racing snake again 😉😉😉 Thank you for sharing Ray.
Cheers mate and speak soon. Atb
Thats a tough hill, takes longer than you think. Not much water up there either! Great video as usual👍👍
Thanks 👍 Atb
Great content as always mate, we do what we can a i like what you do, I really appreciate the work you put into your trips. That tent looks like an exoskeleton version of the lasercomp, and having put up with that for to long I was fed up of not being able to sit up right also ! Here's to the next video 😊
Cheers Jon and thanks for watching. Atb
Great video, route 7 cafe in Aviemore does a great fry up, away from all the tourists to
Thanks for the tip and will check it out next time I am in the area. Atb
After years of wild camping I came to the conclusion, that I'd rather carry the extra weight of a decent 2 man tent, than to be cooped up in a tiny coffin tent. One of the biggest reasons was that small tents always produce much more condensation, and if you are in any kind of bad weather, there's no room to do anything without getting soaked. A tent can make or break your camping enjoyment.
Good advice and thanks for taking time to share. Atb
Nice video great o see you out and about great views I enjoy your tent reviews take care cheers
Thanks Andy and Atb.
Nice one Ray, good to see you out again. Totally agree about the Chalamain Gap was totally burst the last time I came through there.
Its a peach of a section and no plan to head that way again in a hurry. Atb
Good video, and good to see the Southern Cross 1, been considering it as an option.
You cant really compare it for condensation with the previous one though as the conditions are never the same.
Very true about the condensation and on that trip with the wind, all was fine. Ideally folks need to watch lots of videos and not just mine to an idea of what its like based on multiple weather conditions, folks trips and experience. Not any films really out yet on this updated version so will be keen to see if the vent makes any real world difference. Atb.
It’s like seeing an old friend again 😊. Good to see you back out.
Many thanks and Atb.
I've got the Southern Cross 2. Decided I wanted a true 4 season for solo camping. The extra room, and head room are great for long nights, especially as I am 6ft 1in. Not had issue with condensation on the inner, even with the outer being healily frosted inside and out.
Nice, glad you like it. Think the 2 person version is a different animal compared to the 1 person and lots of folks i know rate the 2P highly.
Great video! I'll add that to the list of spots to camp!
As always a great video.
Cheers mate. Atb
Great video Cairngorms has some nice walking trails👍
Great to see you out again Ray
Thanks mate. Atb
I’ve the southern cross 1 and just got the 2 because of the size of the 1 , like you said great as a 3 season but for winter camping far too small , I love them both though👍
Nice 👍 Atb
Nice one Ray - great effort - a long way to the top of this one ! Catch up soon
Thanks for uploading, Ray. Awesome scenes of the Cairn Gorm giants. Thought you'd have been in your DCF Tarptent? 🏴🏔👍
Just trying some bits and pieces. Also going to be looking at more affordable stuff as things price wise getting crazy. Atb
Thank you Ray, lovely mountain views and a nice tent and lovely to see you out again, I don't think you ever waffle, I find your commentary quite relaxing and I like that you say it how it is 😁 so sorry you missed the Aurora. Nowt wrong with taking some painkillers after a long walk, hurts sometimes.
That’s why i stuck with TN pioneer 2 instead of buying the southern cross 2 lack of headroom & cost
Nice one mate. Atb
As everyone else is saying, it’s great seeing you back out. I always enjoy your videos.
I’m considering an XMid myself. I have a Hubba NX but I’m not keen on the inner-first style pitch and it’s mostly multi-day walks in fair weather for me so it would probably hold up just fine.
I’m on the train from Fort William after completing the West Highland Way 👍
Great stuff and hope you had a great time on WHW. Atb
Sometimes Ray, its all about the the waffle, more Ray, more waffle required. All the best.
Thanks and cheers for watching. Atb
Nice to see you back in the mountains Ray, will I be looking out on eBay for southern cross 😂 , I also missed the aurora as I was in bed and up early for work 🤷♂️ think I’ve seen enough photos of it anyway . Don’t worry I won’t be looking at that tent think I have enough already atb Dave
Shall we say your not likely to see it again on the channel. Thanks for watching and Atb.
@@RS.Outdoors 😂
Great video Ray, nice to hear that you are human as well 😅 currently up in the North of Scotland and didn't see a wink of the northern lights 😂 down south definitely had it better (or thats what I tell myself)! Keep up the good work ❤❤
Thanks very much and for watching. Atb
very good Ray always like your vids , where did you pinch the Audi=?? very nice.
Good to see you out. The fitness will come back but it is harder when age starts creeping up.
Somewhere I have a picture of my Austin metro being butted by a Reindeer in the ski centre car park in 1984.
Watch out for that yellow snow.
I've had my Xmid solid 2 since it came out but wouldn't use it on the tops. I reckon they end up on eBay because they were so hard to get. People went on, got it and sold it on often to make a profit as it was so hard to get. It took me four attempts. They sold out in seconds.
I've always liked the look of the Southern cross but the prices are just too much.
My wife had a Metro, what a car that was. Atb
I hear you on the fitness. If you sit around too long, you really feel it when you do these longer trips. However, I've found some brisk 5 mile walks in my local area after work (maybe even a little jog here and there too) has really made a difference and only just after a few. Surprised how good it felt. Personally, I wouldn't buy that tent. In fact, given the type of camping I and most people do, there's really no need for £6/7/800 tents is there? Look at how many people go to the mountains in nature hike or Vango tents and they get on just fine, if not better! Shame you missed the Arora but apparently there's more on the way in the coming days. Take it easy, thanks for the video. ✌️
Thanks for watching and taking time to post. Next trip is with some cheap gear as feel that as you say, folks can have a good time without spending a fortune. Atb
@@RS.Outdoors well the Arora is due to happen again this Fri/sat so hope you get to see them! 🙂✌️
We like your waffling on, just like a normal bloke. Nice to see you out
Cheers mate and Atb.
Good video Ray. I had a sneaky suspicion you would be out on Friday, can’t believe you missed the Aurora though 😅
Did you get out and see it. Cant believe I was in an ideal place and missed it :)
@@RS.Outdoors nah, I fell asleep 💤 😀
Good thoughts on tents..i would love to see you trying abisko lite 1..
Changed the Volvo for an Audi TT Ray?🤔
Looked great weather, amazing views. I like the Cairngorms as well, always a fantastic sense of space.
Great video, TFS cheers Alistair 👍
Wife wanted a small runabout as she hated the big barge :) The things we have to do. Thanks for watching and Atb.
@@RS.Outdoors Haha, I'm not knocking it, I have an MX5 (which we love) Penny has a Polo and I have a Seat Ibiza for boring stuff!
ATB Alistair 👍
How rude of her, I thought you were looking trim! 😂
Ray have a look at the Terra Nova Pioneer compact 2. It seems to tick all your points about height, condensation and wind….
Haven't but will take a look. Atb
Lovely video again. How do you find the new Osmo 4? Picture looks great!
Been using it for months now and think its a great little camera. Secret is the video editing software you use. I currently use Davinci Resolve (Free) version. Bit of learning curve but handles the footage files well as you can see. Atb
Braw Video Ray👍
Cheers Chris and wish I could get out as often as you do. Atb
Great to see you out again, did this trip last year. Those wheels look a bit flash ?
Thanks for watching. Those wheels have been a hell of a pain in the arse. Atb
Always enjoy your videos Ray, views superb, informative about the tent, only downside for me is I’d like you to put out content more often, difficult I know with work and family commitments. Keep up the good work👍
Would like to put more out as well, but life seems to keep getting in the way. Thanks for watching and Atb.
Great video Ray! Do you have any interest in Nemo tents? I have the dragonfly and absolutely love it, Very light and spacious with plenty of head room sitting up and its got two vestibules. I am looking to get another tent where I can pitch inner and outer together for our Irish weather here! I like the Tarptent Scarp 2, What is your opinion of those please? Thanks, Adrian
Never tried the Scarp much to be honest. My only dislike was the packing size due to fixed end poles. However my friend Murray has used his for about 8 years on every trip and loves it. Atb
Good to see you out again Ray, love your videos and honest reviews. I am awaiting delivery of the southern cross 2 at the moment, i need a 2 man tent for me and the border collie. Not happy with the fjallraven abisko lite 2 mainly due to the whole tunnel tent thing, pain in the arse having all your cook stuff behind you. Anyway the sc2 is quite a bit higher than the 1 so hopefully i will cope. You say its not ideal as a 4 season tent but is that based on where you camp in Scotland, i will mainly be using it in Yorkshire Dales to do the Dales 30. Time will tell no doubt and as you say maybe it will end up on ebay🤣. Hope you are planning more frequent videos now summers coming. Take care👍
Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy your tent. The SC2 is a different beast as you say and the extra size will make all the difference for what you need. Atb
Bit of friendly advice: don’t eat the yellow snow😂
:) Atb
Really love watching your vids Ray, I've missed your great sense of humour. Please get off your `fat arse and make some more😂
:) Atb
You tried the duplex? And park in less exposed places helps 😅
I noticed the Audi at the start of the video, what happened to the Volvo??
Hi you must get yur sleep!
You'll be OK Ray try and get your 'fat arse' out every day even if only few miles and enjoy it.😊
Cheers :) Atb
Ey up Raymondo, cracking video as always. What stunning views you had up there. The Cairngorms is a stunning area of the world. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us as always
All the best
Dave
