  • While it might not have been the all-action extraveganza promised in the trailers, and definitely not one of Guy Ritchie's better films, Ministry was still a decent WW2 adventure movie. But could have been so much more.

We see the Nazis succeed twice against people we are led to believe won’t bend to them: Hans Landa in the opening scene with the farmer and later the Nazi who calls Michael Fassbender’s bluff at the bar after just the slightest of mistakes. In Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare it felt like they were playing on easy mode.

      I find the ideal movie would be a balance between the two, despite Brad Pitt's speech in IB there was a distinct lack of 'killin nazees' until the very very end.
      Gonna go with my man Steven Spielberg, he struck a great balance between Ze Germans as a threat but also actually show them being vanquished. They were cartoony but at least Indy had to run from them.
      The problem with a commando raid is the nature of a raid by the allies is it naturally puts the heroes on the offensive from the start. Maybe there should have been something where they're immediately put on the backfoot like ending up in a duel with a U-boat where their ship is sunk and swim to shore with little weaponry.
      IDK how precisely to do it, you want a rampage but you have to earn it. Even Rambo was on the backfoot before striking back.

    There are no good writers being used in Hollywood anymore. I'll stick with rewatching the thousands of quality movies made during Hollywood's 'Studio System' where they discovered and retained a seriously talented company of writers, producers, actors, wardrobe departments, and so on. All these 'one-off' movies are very 'hit and miss' and money is far more important than quality. It's not that they don't spend enough money, it's that what they spend it on is stupid.

    We saw the trailer for this movie and had hopes that here was at last a movie it would be fun to see. It led my son to explore the book this movie came from--"Churchill's Secret Warriors", and the more he compared them, the more he felt disappointed in the coming movie. That book was so full of dramatic attacks and rescues--all absolutely true--that five movies could have been made from that one book. The side story of the exotic-looking lady and her colleagues never had to be inserted. It took up space that could have been used for so much more.
    There is a whole series of books on the subject, moving through the history of Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, written by Damien Lewis. I urge everyone here to read those books, especially the Brits amongst us. It will buck you up during the weirdness happening over there now, and you will be asking yourselves, "What ever happened to THAT kind of Brit?" It might give people ideas, and stiffen some spines.

    Morgan Freeman said it best, it doesn't matter how good your movie is, if it has a ridiculous title, it will be hard for people to recommend it, and the box office will suffer for it, he was referring to The Shawshank Redemption by the way lol

    • @marychocolatefairy
      @marychocolatefairy Před 13 dny +4

      Yeah, I've long thought that filmmakers should consider if people would want to say the title of their movie at the ticket stand, lol. Look at how The American Society of Youknowwhats flopped recently. Though re Shawshank, as someone that remembers well when it came out, the problem was more that it came out in an unusually crowded fall with a bunch of hyped movies- it debuted the same day as Pulp Fiction (which was THE movie to see), and also around that time we had Interview With a Vampire, Stargate, the first TNG film, etc.

    My favorite genre is HIstorical Fiction, but I think WW2 has been done to death. I want to see a Korean war movie done well, but considering China owns the west now, doubt I will see that. As an aside I saw an recent South Korean movie taking place during the Korean War with Liam Neeson as General McAurthur. The plot was mostly the Chinese counter attack that drove the allies back, and a band of fighters that stayed in Seoul in order to by time for the retreating forces. Not sure if it was a true story but it was badass.

    I saw it in theaters on 4/20 (A certain person’s birthday) after being at the gun range shooting a lot of WWII weapons, perhaps it was just the lingering excitement from that but I honestly enjoyed the movie. The criticisms are valid and there’s certainly points where things aren’t great, but I found it easy to just have fun with.
    Like the supply ship doesn’t look remotely like the real vessel, but then again there aren’t many 80 year old freighters around today, partially because of the damn U-Boats. But it’s a real freighter, and the HMS Violet, a violet is a flower, the ship should have been a flower class like the HCMS Sackville. They used HMS Belfast, but hey it’s a real WWII vintage ship so I’ll take it, the U-Boat looks like the one they keep in Malta from U-571, so it looked pretty good. Overall I guess I was just so prepared for crappy CGI that looks terrible that the authentic feeling sets were enough to placate me.
    Long and short I’d say go see it but treat it like if someone made a movie about a Sniper Elite mission.

    This movie felt like a love letter to Tarantino (moreso than Basterds specifically). We had the hand-extending gun at the critical moment of a conflict, a character with "surgical precision" with a knife, some mustache twirling Natsees who spend most of their screen time in Spirit Halloween costumes; really, it's all there.
    Interestingly, I got more of the Bond vibe from Appleyard than Gus March-Phillips. Appleyard is introduced as having "gone in" on his own, is proved to be a certifiable badass with "Can you please turn the car battery off" and he even throws his lines away with that exact Daniel Craig in Casino Royale level of dismissiveness. And the fact that he sounds like an Oxford man is the creme on top.
