    I have a damn near identical twin to your camera, a black paint MP, also with the M6 ISO dial (28901XX), a 35mm Summilux Pre-Asph v2 (one of the very late German ones) with a series VII yellow filter on it and Tri-X inside, pushed to 800 (or sometimes 1600 if I’m feeling frisky). I bought it secondhand from a store that literally just got it, story was the gentleman who bought it new shot two rolls with it and put it back in the box for 20 years before he finally parted with it. I had no idea about the age or M6 ISO dial significance until afterwards! After a CLA and repair for sticky framelines, it’s been rock solid, and I’m proud to say every bit of brassing it has (not much yet) is all from me. It’s my favorite camera, my desert island kit, and hopefully an heirloom I may pass to my kids one day, if I ever have any!

      Indeed you CAN buy an M-A new. The MP has been made popular by CZcams. Beautiful in black paint, no arguing that! The M-A is a newer model from 2014 that Leica makes brand new. Along with the M6 reissue. Of those three though, for its bad CZcams marketing, I think the M-A is your best option if you want something less known that is just as amazing as the other two, if not more. And you don’t need a battery.

  • @shereemaebalangue1296

    Love your videos! I bought a brand new Leica MP black paint after waiting in line at 4 Leica stores for almost a year. That was after finally saving enough money to purchase it ( that took 2 years). It’s my dream camera. I love it! I take it on travels and documenting my family and daily life. I also own a Nikonos V for when we go surfing and a ricoh griiix (for quick captures and quick sharing and when I run out of film). If I had to choose 1 camera is would hands down be my MP. ❤

    Very nice. I have a new M6 but don't really enjoy it, because the metering red dots don't give direct Aperture and Shutter Speed information. I'm tempted to use an M2 or M4 and just meter using the Sunny 16 Rule.

    • @justinkingery2489
      @justinkingery2489 Před rokem +1

      I think the red/green dot meters are the only major downside to the metered Leicas, and that's been a popular opinion for decades. I think Leica missed the boat by not redesigning the meter for the recent M6 reissue.

    Hello Jeremy!
    If you had to choose, a small, bright, sharp 35 lens for the Leica MP:
    * Ultron, ASPH V2
    or
    * Summicron ASPH V2?
    Which one would it be and why? :)
    Best regards?

    • @jeremy-t
      @jeremy-t  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Hello! Apologies for the slow reply, wanted to reply when I had the time to give a proper one!
      Oh man.. Thats a hard one... I think.. it would have to be... The Ultron ASPH v2.. Hah!
      The ASPH summicron is great - its good all around performer, it gives nice colors, contrast, resolution.. But.. Something about the pictures it makes doesn't separate it from other lenses... It's a "transparent" lens, that doesn't impose itself onto the picture.. But with that, it also doesn't stand out - in 10 years time, if I looked back at a picture made by it, without any EXIF or notes, I would never be able to tell you what lens it was made on.
      The Ultron v2 wide open does something pretty unique, and stopped down it's great. So for me, I'm always looking for a a lens to do something that complements & accentuates what I'm going for!

    Hey Jeremy, how often do you find you need a rangefinder calibration on your MPs? When I got my Brand New MP in 2021, it came from the factory with a misaligned rangefinder. I got it fixed, but nearly 2 years later, I’m finding it needs another alignment (vertical this time). It mostly lives in a Billingham bag, so I just don’t understand what I’m doing to the camera, even with all the padding, that sets it off. Do you find this issue? Do you get things tuned up once a year or something?

    • @jeremy-t
      @jeremy-t  Před rokem +2

      Hey Stuart! Yes, sadly they do inevitably drift due to the nature of their design, you’re not doing anything wrong to cause it to happen! :)
      They function via a screw turned to a certain point, but nothing is fixed or locked down. So inevitably, as the entire mechanism moves, over time and repeat use, there will be some micro movements to that screws “calibrated” position. Eg - Say the horizontal screw set at 80 degrees is correct, but at 81 degrees infinity is off.. All that is holding it in place at 80 instead 81 degrees is merely friction, so with use, the screw will drift, though I find that after a number of years the entire system settles down more and I’ve needed less and less calibrations.
      When shooting large aperture lenses I find myself needing to do a slight adjustment every 6 months to a year (50mm f0.95/f1), so 2 years is quite awhile! But I’ve recently been shooting 35mm stopped down, so any lack of alignment isn’t noticeable! Even 35mm F1.4 is much more forgiving than 50 f1.4.
      Also, some additional information - adjusting the vertical adjustment, or the horizontal infinity position isn’t a difficult job, it takes less than 5 minutes, but it does require the right tools, and some* skill.. Adjusting the horizontal axis at a close distance (1m, 2m etc) requires a lot more work, because you’ll need to insert a ground glass into the film plane.
      All that said to let you know, that if you send your camera in for just a vertical adjustment alone, it shouldn’t be too expensive! If a tech wants $300 to do that, something is not right.. :) And a good way to check if a tech is doing a thorough job is to ask if they only calibrate the rangefinder at infinity, or at close distances as well - some techs say they do, but they actually only check infinity, hoping customers don’t notice that close distances being off… :(
      Hope this helps! :)

    • @StuartWeir
      @StuartWeir Před rokem

      @@jeremy-t thank you for such a detailed response! Yes, I was beginning to think I was going crazy with noticing some changes in the vertical alignment; that being said, I’m really curious to know whether or not when I got the rangefinder recalibrated if they just did infinity alignment (for $200 CAD). I’d honestly be super interested if you made a video going over you realigning your rangefinder either vertically or horizontally on the MP, specifically, because the other videos don’t seem to address this camera specifically and apparently it’s slightly different than other Leica Ms. You can throw in as many disclaimers as you like just so you know your back is covered, but I’d love to learn how to do it myself as I am a tinkerer by nature, and feel like I could do it myself, especially since sending it away there isn’t really anyone close anymore to service it and Leica New Jersey supposedly can’t tell up from down based off forums I’ve read where their servicing is done incredibly poorly.
