Good advice, mate. On 50ks I take a salt capsule minimum of once and hour. Never cramped up since I strayed doing that. Also a good idea to have an electrolyte drink the night before the race and a couple of hours before the start.
Music is such a boost, so I do the same at about 30k, but I also make sure to get some caffeine and sugar just before that too so I get the mental and physical boost. Usually works an absolute treat.
100% correct about carrying food. I carry a little in case I don’t want to stop at an aid station or I get injured and have to wait it out. The rest I scoop up quick into a ziplock bag I have with me and eat on the next hills.
    Thanks for the video.

Your sudden movement tip is super interesting and might have been one of my big problems during first 50k. I had trained on sidewalks and dirt trails, but got pretty screwed on the uneven rock part of the course (Moab slick rock ground). Overpacking also boned me. Kept watching dudes that were doing the 50 miler blow past me with a tiny water bottle as gear. Meanwhile I was moving about as well as a lame mule. Live and learn. Great tips!

Good advice. I ran a 50K trail this past weekend and I wasn't able to complete it because of I missed the cutoff. I was so upset cause I wasn't tired and wanted to finish it. But I remembered stepping on a branch that made me get off my rhythm and cramped up hard that I collapsed. LOL This is solid advice for my next run, thank you and be safe out on your runs.

At 52 yrs old… I must say Spartan Ultras are not difficult….. to me. I can run forever, complete 100 pull-ups chest to bar in 10 minutes. These are great tips that you’re providing. Good shoes, mustard packs for cramps, energy packs are a must. At the half way point you get to access a bucket of goods that you bring to the event. Dry socks are good to add to this bucket. Research for more items to add to your half way point bucket. You have to provide your own bucket. Decorate it uniquely so you can find it easily when you’re at that halfway point. Have fun, help each other out during the ultra event. You can do it.

@@ChadLubinski Not as I wanted! 😆 It was a 53k with over 10k ft of vert on some very technical trails. I went into it very under trained, and knowing they allowed people to drop from 33 miles to 22 miles without penalty due to the difficulty of the course. So I wound up with my first DNF (as far as I'm concerned) and a 22 miler finish medal. I honestly think I could have dragged myself around the third loop, but I probably would have missed the cutoff. It did the trick, though... I've gone into all 3 of my 50ks very undertrained, and I won't do it again.

Honestly ended up running about the first 40 miles or so after that didn't take very good care of my nutrition and my body shut down so I sat and rested for about 3-4 hours and ate some burgers the race director provided and continued on and walked the rest
