If we don't, we have to pay someone to do it, or join an agency. An agency takes their cut off the top & you lose autonomy.

For those not in the know, vocal tone is interpreted through facial expressions and body language, which is why she’s all bouncy and joyous for a fun, upbeat song. If she were interpreting a tragic song, she’d probably be very different.
the people replying to you know absolutely nothing about ASL and it shows lol. interpreters interpret, english and asl aren't able to be perfectly translated, so interpreting the feeling as well as most the words that can be translated is exactly what she is doing. youre 100% right, its essentially the same thing as putting "soul" into music or your craft just in another way.
I went to my first ASL outdoor concert and the translator was FIRE! The artist mid show stopped to recognize how amazing the interpreter was! She showed up and showed out! Glad that ASL translators are getting the recognition they deserve! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Watching ASL signers "sing" is actually so magical. I love the passion they put into it. It almost becomes a dance of expression. There was a deaf woman in our church and I loved watching her sign sing.

My church friend is deaf so you could easily understand her signing singing. But I know very little ASL so I wasn't aware that this interpreter wasn't doing a great job. It just reminded me of the idea of watching someone sing and how much expression can be put into it. Speaking or hearing words or music isn't the only way to enjoy music nor is it even sometimes necessary. As my lovely friend would always demonstrate. I was not meaning offense by it.

Learn ASL (getting a Bachelor's degree in ASL is helpful), specialized training in music interpretation, ASL certification. Volunteer at local events (or even schools) and build your portfolio. Network with people! Then contact venues, event organizers, music agencies and interpreting agencies. @@chunglix3

I took sign-language classes many years ago in college and let me tell you, deaf people are great dancers. We all went to a discotheque and while the DJ was spinning the records, the deaf people all had their hands on the speakers in order to feel the vibrations. Then they just let loose and were incredible!!!

I imagine it’s not easy work. You’d have to listen and memorize all the songs in the set. Then with ASL your facial expressions and body language is also interpretive so you have to make sure those align. You have to match the energy of the artist as well. It’s like a performance within a performance. Great job.
