- This video is our Latin Jazz Arrangement of Chick Corea's classic song "Spain," by Drummer Jay Fenichel and his Trio. I had some requests from some of my drum students to put up a version of this Jazz arrangement that features just the drum cam and no camera angle edits so you can really see the drum solo. Thanks for the comment... In all actuality there is no physical benefit to traditional grip. It's just something i developed in college because the upper classmen played that way. However, there is definitely a stylistic difference in how it feels and how the stick reacts off of the drums. I know great players that utilize both styles in very tasteful and musical ways. That's a K custom flat... Really nice for Jazz. you can really dig in and it stays under control. Then a k Medium thin 18 in. above that for the bell stuff. that 18" recently cracked... broke my heart! Thanks for the comment. ~J

this is first time I'm seeing someone using a traditional grip on a drum cam...I don't know why is it so "abandoned" by modern drummers, even though it's not really easy to master it it gets a really valuable tool, even to metal drummers...anyways a great playalong, keep up the good work!! :)

I haven't noticed any plexi glass in this video but it is used to avoid having the drum sound from "leaking out" to other microphones.

@@pistonpistache As far as I can tell "RllrrL rrLRll KKRLKK" is the lick. But the main theme is 16th note triplets grouped as 3+3+2 over 2 bars.

He's not hearing a click, You can notice the timing problem. He speeds up and slows down a lot. And I mean with perfect timing that the whole song he should stay with the same time.

You seem to have an extra beat in the last 4/4 of the 3-bar break (where there's normally 3 + 3 + 2 across 4 + 4)
Yup... That's just part of our arrangement of the tune.
As long as he cut it wthin the time signature, hell, thats all that matters.

It's actually a Maple snare, 6-ply 10 lugs. 6.5 X 14. Sonar. Beautiful drum!
