These people got greedy. Rather then putting the money in safe investments they take a gamble to try and make even more money on risky investments.
Exactly right. They were all already rich from their salaries and endorsement deals. There's no need to take a lot of risk when you are already rich. An extremely conservative investment strategy that only yields a 5% profit per year on say a $20 million portfolio equals $1 million a year. And a lot of these players had $10 or $20 million in the 90s or early 2000s when that was a ton of money. $20 million in say 2005 was worth a lot more compared to today considering the cost of living back then.
I have heard this explained from a psychology perspective that most successful pro athletes love the "competition and winning. Conservative investments are just not immediate or lucrative enough.
