    I have had three or four different name brand tents and configurations and I always always bring an extra tarp to make a shelter to cook under in case of rain and do other chores. I always put a portion of my tent under the tarp and sometimes or should I say most of the time I bring them next row little tarp to put on my tent just as an extra precaution against rain. I know it’s extra weight but is extra comfort and extra insurance. I’ve been in situations in which I have to set up the tarp first between two trees on the Ridgeline and then pitch the tent under that tarp very comfortable without suffering the rain getting my stuff wet. I always make sure that the extra tarps that I bring are very own really light. I enjoyed your presentation. Very good and very informational. Good job. God bless you.

    One thing that you can do to keep one of the doors partially open is something that I do with my Lunar Solo or Lanshan 1. I unzip and unclip one door, roll it it up a bit and then use a quilt clip to hold up the rolled up part. You could just unclip one door and leave the two doors toggled together, then roll the one door up a bit and clip it with a quilt clip or maybe a cloths pen (I wouldn't use a binder clip though, it looks like that might cause a tear). That way you would have pretty good coverage and only have to close up in really hard rain or windy conditions. Oh, and your video definitely helped me decide to buy one of these tents. Can't wait to get it!

Actually I might go for the carmo, only to be little bit more hidden when wild camping random places. Its hard, both colors look great. The thing I really like about the green is that its really get you closer to nature with the transparency. I dont know if the carmo would give the same feel, do anyone knows???

    Excellent follow-up review Griz, thanks. I was interested in your comment about not enough overhang on the Plex vs the Duplex and not being able to leave a flap open in a light rain. On Zpacks website, they claim you can remove the peak support rods creating more of a pointed peak, of course, losing a little head room in the process. I guess my question is, have you tried this setup and would it actually create more of an overhang? Thanks in advance

    I tie a tarp, rain poncho, or space blanket over the top of the tent. It turns it into a double wall tent for cold, wet weather. The condensation doesn't flick off the inside wall as much during heavy rain.

    • @orion7741
      @orion7741 Před 3 lety +1

      its not really a double wall tent though.... its just a single wall tent that has rain protection over it. a double wall tent is one that has a inner wall that is partially mesh so that condensation does not build up on it and get on your bag and gear, the condensation builds up on the outerwall instead.

And it also packs down smaller now. Almost makes me questions why they ever put the CF struts in in the 1st place. I do have to use one or two more stakes to tension the walls more. But I was carrying those stakes anyway for rainy day.

      Your comment is the most interesting. I'm currently researching into this tent so far no one has though about pitching without CF struts/stays. I've came across reviewers complain about pack-ability due to CF struts/stays also I don't know why they've though about removing when packing up the tent. They come with Titanium struts/stays now which 35 grams a pair (1.23 ounce) which is 21 grams (0.74 ounce) heavier than Carbon fiber struts/stays. Thank you youre a legend.

    Hey Grizz, just finished watching your entire library! Great work! Quick question, I’m transitioning tents from the Hilleberg Enan to the Camo Plexamid. I’ve always used a two wall tent. How do you deal with the excessive condensation at camp breakdown? Wipe down all walls and pack?

    • @GrizzleGear
      @GrizzleGear  Před 5 lety +3

      I wipe down walls and give it a proper shaking before rolling it up. The good thing about dcf is that it doesn't actually absorb water... So it dries really quickly. On my thru, if the tent was wet when I packed it up, I'd take a short break mid morning once the sun was out and I'd give it 10 min to dry out.

    So I can see now that my Plexamid may have a defect. The loops in the ceiling where the carbon struts make their bend in the middle - I fully expected to see daylight in the stitching in yours. Mine has a LOT of daylight coming in but is still rainproof (the loops are ripping/coming unstitched from the black nylon, but not the DCF apparently). Big bummer - time to talk to ZPacks I guess. Thanks for doing this review!

    Griz my biggest issue also is not being able to open 1 door. In addition, I've also encountered a couple of times my quilt being pretty damp with condensation in the morning. However there hasn't been any water inside besides condensation on the walls. Those times were when there was all night rain and the overnight temps were in 40s to 30s during fall here in Pa.
    Likewise I've found the pros to far outweigh the two cons with weight, ease of set-up, size and lack of having a water logged tent. Do think the extra size (width) of the Duplex would more often eliminate having a damp quilt? Like yourself I use 20" Neo Air (actually the 67" womens version) and I'm 5'8" tall I find have lot of length room. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and review on the Plexamid and your thu-hike. Your initial video what made me choose the Plexamid and you responded to my questions before I made the decision to purchase. Had it out for about 15 overnight as my son and I preparing for our 2019 thru-hike. He's a hammocker...kids lol.

    • @GrizzleGear
      @GrizzleGear  Před 5 lety +1

      Do you move around a lot when you sleep? Is it possible your quilt is brushing up against the inside of the tent? I've done that once or twice but it's never been bad enough to where it's taken more than 5 min of sun to dry my quilt out. I've noticed that with my E.E. Revelation, In the mornings after a big rain or if it's REALLY humid out it almost feels damp to the touch, but I've chalked it up to my body heating up and releasing moisture which gets trapped in the quilt. Combine that with the fact that down insulates by trapping air and if it's humid theres a lot of moisture in the air so it can feel slightly damp. It's happened to me before with a Big Agnes tent and a Kelty Cosmic Down AND the Duplex. Was it just a slightly cold damp feeling or was the quilt really wet?
      Also, I'm glad you're enjoying the tent! I love mine and actually slept in it last night out side my house. I sleep better on my pad now than my bed! lol

    • @1amdawson
      @1amdawson Před 5 lety +2

      @@GrizzleGear I'm assuming I move around in my sleep but I do wake up on my pad. I second that, my pad is much more comfortable than my bed...which I'm pitching before I start my thru-hike lol. I also have EE rev and I hadn't thought that it could be from sweating/perspiration during sleeping. Thanks again happy trails and have a merry Christmas!

    • @GrizzleGear
      @GrizzleGear  Před 5 lety +1

      @@1amdawson I could be totally wrong about that but yeah if it's not wet to the touch and more damp it may be the case. Also, if your quilt feels damp during a downpour it could be misting condensation like I mentioned in the video. I find that EE's 20d is a little better if you tend to brush your tent occasionally, but the 10d breathes better and traps a lil less perspiration/moisture. If that makes any sense. lol I've owned both. :)

    Hi there, nice review thanks. I have a plexamid and on my first try in -2C found it a bit breezy and cold, using the Zpacks fixed length pole, which leaves about 8in ground gap all round. I will likely use trekking poles, so may lower the height to bring tent walls to ground level. How did you get on with cold and wind and will my plan work do you think? Cheers

    • @GrizzleGear
      @GrizzleGear  Před 5 lety +3

      It should help. It is a 3 season tent so you can't really expect it to handle cold weather well. Lowering the pole will help with drafts, but remember that the lower your pole, the lower your bathtub floor. Lowering it could be counterproductive too. . Lowering it will also lower the pitch of the walls which would give you less interior space . Give it a shot! Let me know how it works out. :)

    • @GrizzleGear
      @GrizzleGear  Před 5 lety

      Memories of fold? If you're referring to rolling and folding the tent up it's easy. Fits into the stuff sack no problem. Silnylon sags when wet, DCF doesn't. What do you mean where it rubs often? And what weak point? DCF rarely delaminates and usually only happens if the supplier gets a defective roll. Sorry I can't be more help, but I have no clue really what you're saying or asking. Sorry.

Not sure if that's how you're currently doing it. Also I have a trekking pole that is bunk and at 122cm, its nowhere near 48". That threw me off at first. Then I got new poles... Lol

      Grizzle Gear just tryin to figure out the height you prefer for the corner tie outs. I noticed when I pull it lower to the ground, the bath tub floor is all messed up and pulled out of shape. However, almost if the pictures I see online, people have it pitched pretty low. I probably just need to practice more, but you’re the only person I know of, that I can speak to, that also has a Plexamid. I figured it’s worth it to hear your opinion

      I got rid of my Duplex and no longer own it. That should answer most of your questions... Lol. I don't miss the extra room or the extra door. The duplex was way more room than I needed and I've shaved 6oz of my base by going with the plexanid.

      Ps, I don't miss vestibule room... Because with the duplex I only ever used 1 door and 1 vestibule on it anyway. I think I had a second person in there with me one time. The room wasn't utilized or needed by me.

      Weight. I vlogged this thru hike and I brought an extra battery bank and camera. I knew from my previous hikes that the Duplex was more room than I needed. Much more room. I owned a Camo Duplex and the weight diff between that and a plexamid is right around 6-7oz. It enabled me to add all my camera gear without taking a major hit on my base weight. The duplex was just WAY too big for me.

      @GrizzleGear  Před 5 lety

      I have about 120 nights in this thing now. The bathtub floor is about 8" tall so it handles splashing no problem. I have had two occasions where the front of the tent was facing into the wind during a downpour and I got a Lil water inside. I talk about it in the follow up.

      Note that one of the bungee toggles that pull the bathtub floor higher can attach to the toggle that would normally keep the mesh door rolled open. This will pull the mesh door inwards towards the tent, creating more of an overhang - thereby reducing the chance of light rain coming in while having the "rain door" left open to prevent condensation. This is actually not a well advertised feature and I would not be surprised if this is where some people are having issues with condensation in light rain conditions - keeping both rain doors closed when they don't really need to.

    I just bought a plexamid, one question. Do you use a ground sheet with yours?

    • @GrizzleGear
      @GrizzleGear  Před 4 lety +1

      I've never used a ground sheet with any z-pack shelter I've ever owned. In my experience,( Ive now owned four Z-Packs shelters), The floors in Z-Pack shelters have been extremely durable. The rest of the tent wears well before the floor will. I just retired this plexamid and picked up a camo Altaplex. But I've only ever had anything puncture my floor once. And that was my own fault for not examining the campsite before I set up. I set up directly on a sharp piece of glass. It put a small hole in the floor of my tent, and a hole in my mattress pad. It took me less than 5 minutes to patch the hole in the tent with some DCF tape. It took me forever to patch the hole in my mattress pad. Lol I don't think a ground sheet would have helped me at all in that situation. That glass was sharp as hell when I was laying right on top of it.

      Quite honestly, I don't see the difference. If it rains, any tent will be wet on the outside. I never touch the walls of the tent anyway so it isn't an issue. DCF is a far superior fabric, wipe and shake down the tent and it'll practically dry before your eyes if the sun is out.

  • @MKDonline
    @MKDonline Před 5 lety +2

    Hello Grizzle Gear - an idea for you regarding not being able to open a door during rain - From the Zpacks site, buy one of their stick on loop and toggle sets. Attach them to the outside (the loop) and the inside (the toggle) of the tent door at the same level as the existing loop/toggle that keeps the two doors attached. Put them at about the middle of the door. By doing this, you can roll a door half way up. I did this to two doors on my Duplex this year and it worked great on the AT.

Sure it is light but that's all to be said for it. It's much too thin. There isn't even a zipper on the front and the rain came in from the bottom sides. Not as much space as they pretend in the ad either. At 750€ a complete ripoff.

Both times it was a small pool about the size of a half dollar, maybe 2 side by side. It wasn't enough to justify moving once set up.
