You know this game is a must buy when both Nintendo Life and Switchup give it a great score.
Played the demo and immediately preordered a physical copy after I was 1 hour in. Very excited for this one and this is what I’ll be doing this weekend
The very samething that happened with me. After playing the Demo for abit I knew I wanted to get this Physically. I had to make sure I pre ordered to make sure I could get a copy. You never know with Switch games if they under produce games Physically.
Sameeeeee demo into physical copy precommand ! The game look simply perfect.
Im normally a digital download kind of person but im thinking i need this physical lol
does the save work on the fisical copy? i dont want to start the demo and having to start again on fisical
@@PlasticinaVerde I’ll let you know today. Pretty sure it will, the demo says you can use your save in the retail and since your save is stored on switch internal memory I wouldn’t see why it wouldn’t. But will confirm after I pick it up at the store today.
Glad to hear the normal difficulty isn’t as easy as I thought. Was looking forward to a balance of gameplay and story and looks like I’m gonna get that tonight at midnight
Normal is definitely not slouch mode from my experience with the prologue demo. Some levels were easy but others were close calls.
@@bradleystone4526 from what I heard in this review, the battles do get harder as you progress, so normal mode is pretty good in case you want a challenge without getting demolished.
It has a hard mode also
@@humbleone7697 yeah but that’s why I said I want a balance of gameplay and story. I want for battles to not be a cakewalk but not too difficult as well. That way, I can enjoy the story without dreading the battle portions .
@@reign8195 yeah I know what you mean
You guys are the gold standard for game reviews. I always know I can come to a nintendolife review and get exactly what im looking for in a game.
I'm with you. I've come to trust NL with many games that I might not have otherwise purchased, especially indie titles.
Switch up says hi.
Switchup are also a great source
Ah, so you enjoy people who waste your time.
Huh?
The last demo pushed this up from a maybe to a definite. Looking forward to picking this up! After payday... there are so many games to buy!
Agreed. I'm currently playing Lost Ark on PC, Horizon, Elden Ring, and now this. I'm currently waiting for my wallet to get thrown back at me lol
No demo needed as I pre-ordered this as soon as I heard about it. It's d new Final Fantasy Tactics and that's all I needed. Sadly, Amazon cancelled my pre-order, for absolutely no reason so I picked it up today from Target. Will start on it shortly.
I remember the Direct they debuted this in and they said that "Triangle Strategy" was just a temporary placeholder name. Then, as time went on, they stopped saying that lol I wonder at what point the team just shrugged and went "Meh, this is fine." Although tbf we should have seen this coming. It's the same group that brought us "Bravely Default" (The mechanic of that game was switching between Brave Mode and Default Mode) and "Octopath Traveler" (A game where 8 Travelers cross paths lol)
This is what I’ve been thinking. Naming the game after the core mechanic kind of is cool.
Project Triangle Strategy was the placeholder, they dropped the Project
It’s still a dumb name regardless
@@josuemelena1478 no its not
@@josuemelena1478 maybe ur just too superficial to understand how perfect the name is to this game
Honestly, the idea to have EVERY character be their own unique class is genius. It makes every single character posses some attribute or skill that NO OTHER characters can do. It encourages you to think long and hard about exactly which abilities would be helpful on which map. Maybe you favor the bow adept, but this map would be much more useful if you brought say, the hunter due to his ability to place traps on the many narrow staircases. And the fact you won’t get every character on one run of the game means even subtle differences in choice lead to a completely new roster. Some with characters you never saw before and with abilities you never used before. Also, choosing one character usually locks out another, so if you got really comfortable with a certain character or class, you may need to learn how to play without it.
To be fair, I’m only in chapter 10 on hard, some characters do overlap. On my path, I got a mage with all four elements and a heal, the same heal the main healer gets, and then another healer on horseback with similar skills. So some do overlap in terms of abilities. It feels like this game was originally supposed to have permadeath, as u get flooded with new units after each battle it feels.
ye gender locking, class locking, always is a genius idea in games, who likes choices. In a RPG you don't want to create you own mixes of abilities and experiment, you want to be locked and have no say in weapons or skills, true genius.
@@IT-ry8xt In fairness, if literally everyone suffers that nonsense limitation, I consider it the lesser evil. Gender locking dumb and it has unfortunate implications, and class locking isnt always handled very well. If NOBODY can change classes, then at least its an equal suffering if you get my drift.
@@IT-ry8xt sometimes, yes exactly. Glad you agree.
I actually would prefer if FF Tactics did it that way, as great as it may have been. It also adds more personality to the characters as well, like in Octopath.
You did a great job here Zion. I can feel the enthousiasm the original reviewer has for this game through your delivery!
I don't know... It seems fake to see this guy so enthusiastic for something he didn't even play through... They should have the person who writes the review, do the video. Because this is factually a situation where this guy is saying stuff he has no idea about. Thus, the crazy levels of enthusiasm this speaker uses is manufactured and is impossible to be genuine. This isn't the only channel that does this, so I am not just racking on them.
@@tjepting1 I don't know, the original review is obviously radiating with praise, so I think it's pretty appt they show this in the vid!
Absolutely going to pick this up as soon as I get gaming time opened up after finishing other games I've recently bought. Jumped on way too many new releases and older pickups than I'd care to admit, though each one has been well worth it. Really excited to hear it came out solid.
I'm glad the story is compelling. I can't play a 50 hour rpg without a damn good tale to follow
actually a lot of reviewers say the story is extremly dull
@@ac9313 then these reviewers must be stupid, the story is AMAZING
what an amazing review... in depth and no spoilers... I cant wait to play it!!
Yeah, don't watch the gamexplain one. That one had massive spoilers a couple of minutes in. I'm still angry
@@josephjoe4180 sorry
@@josephjoe4180 thanks for the warning. I'm glad I came here first.
@@josephjoe4180 I literally came here from stopping that stupid video halfway, stupid spoilers istg
after a promising demo last year that came out of nowhere and the fantastic prologue demo this year, my gut was telling me to pre-order even though I usually don't. Glad to know I wasn't wrong.
Yes, this game is worth it. I'm about two hours in and this game just exudes epic. It's great that the game has multiple levels of difficulty and tries to be as accessible as it can for players of various skill levels. The art style is terrific, the music is fantastic, and the voice acting is tremendous. This was one of the games I most looked forward to this year and I'm very impressed with the final product.
I can't agree with the game being epic just 2 hours in... You need at least way more hours to see that lol.
@@harutos8708 The overall package is incredible. I like the graphical style the developers went with, the music, the voice acting, the story building, and the battles. Everything together for me has made it feel like I'm playing an epic game. And I know it will get better as I progress. Having played video games for almost 40 years, I'm able to make a good assessment of a game very quickly and many times foresee the direction a game is going very early on.
Completely forgot I pre-ordered this months ago on Amazon till the other day I got an alert that an item shipped, to my delight I’ll be playing another gem tomorrow sometime!! Excited to dive into this game, last tactics game I played was FF12 Revenant Wings which was absolutely amazing!!
Played the demo on normal mode and was losing units left and right! I have a lot of experience with Fire Emblem, but the battle mechanics seem...more extensive. I'm buying the game and am EXCITED!!!!
I love how this game feels what a modern shining force would be like
Good to know I'm not the only one who remembers Shining Force. *GOD KNOWS SEGA DID!*
I would love remaster of all 3 CDs of shining force 3
Yea that's exactly what this looks like. I'm gonna have to get it
The branching paths have me thinking of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.
Alright gonna buy it now 😻
Nice review. I have been playing this game for about 10 hours now. I'm enjoying the dialogue options and it's significant effects on how the plot branches off as well as the voting system. The music is really nice and the amount of exploration feels just right. The gameplay reminds me of fire emblem 3 houses which is the only other trpg I have played.
I played the demo and I was immediately hooked by the story. Cant wait to see all the endings.
What did you think?
9 OUT OF 10!? I can agree with that. I loved the demo
If this is 9/10, Final Fantasy Tactics is 18/10.
@@timekeeper1784 i havent actually played that one, this is basically my first srpg lol but ill have to give it a try
So looking forward to getting my limited edition tomorrow!! This game is gonna be awesome
does this have "random" battles that can be farmed for xp / loot, like in fire emblem or final fantasy tactics / tactics advance?
Triangle Strategy is easily amongst my Top 5 most anticipated games of 2022. Ever since this game from the same brilliant development team behind the phenomenal Octopath Traveler was first announced by Square-Enix, I've been awaiting Triangle Strategy with endless anticipation. I stayed far away from the demos because I did not want anything spoiled for me so I can enjoy the full game from start to finish. Aside from Nintendo's iconic Fire Emblem series, we've not had a truly worthwhile Tactical RPG since Square's very own legendary classic Final Fantasy Tactics and thankfully it looks like Triangle Strategy is going to take its place alongside the likes of FFT & FE in the pantheon of extraordinary Tactical RPG masterworks👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
This review definitely has bumped it up. 2022 has been a year of bombardment of anticipation for me and Triangle Strategy was barely on my radar but I bought it all the same since it seemed like a game I would like that would fit into a slot somewhere.
This just has me incredibly excited.
☝🏼☝🏼This! I have been waiting for a game similar to FFT (so much nostalgia from playing it on the GBA).
Curious to hear what your other top 5 most anticipated games are.
I already decided to get this game just from playing the demo but this review is amazing! This is how to write reviews 🙏
This is S-E in its element: weaving compelling storylines, music, and gameplay in ways they've failed to do in Western-focused games. RPGs like this should serve as a reminder of what S-E can do.
Well hey, sometimes they're trying while sometimes they're not. Such is their way.
Personally from November - mid Feb I had been in video game purgatory… Then end of Feb / early march I was pummeled with Elden Ring, Triangle Strategy and Destiny Witch Queen… i don’t know when I am going to have the time to play Destiny, but as soon as I finish Elden Ring (not rushing through because exploration is amazing), I am picking up Triangle - I adored the demo.
Same
Deciding between this, Elden Ring or Horizon?
Hope I get mine sooner. Can’t wait to get Live A Live also in few months, I maybe need to play the SNES that I have first.
I love the combat in this game but there is a TON of dialogue. I’m talking 30-40 mins of story and dialogue in between each battle if you are clicking on all the optional stuff as well.
Are there multiple towns with vendors etc...? General store, armory.
I’ve never played a tactical rpg, is this a good one to start with? It looks good but complicated
Think ill give this one a try, I feel like many tried the first 15 mins of the demo and gave up. There are tons of interesting systems and story elements in place, but things really only rev up at the start of the 3rd chapter. This review barely touches some of the genuinely smart design decisions and systems in place.
I’m currently playing Elden Ring, so my forehead is bleeding but point taken👌🏾
I beat the demo and had already preordered. It’s more anticipated than almost any game this year for me (Horizon was first).
The part I like most about it is the ethics system (I was on my college debate team). Liberty (virtue ethics?, eg Aristotelian) , Morality (deontology/rule based, eg 10 commandments, I guess), & Utility (teleological, think Dr. Spock from Star Trek, eg let 1000 die to save 10,000). These factor in for each of the three choices you make. If you really study each choice you can place them in their appropriate bins. I’m guessing they take which ones you use most and allow decisions that are, say for example utilitarian, easier to persuade others in regardless of what info you’ve uncovered. I’m looking forward to seeing if that’s the case in the full game.
Incredible review!!! I’m very hyped and thankful for no spoilers🙏🏾
I played that damn demo for 5 hours and did two story missions and two practice missions, sorry but there is no way I'm going to sit through a game that is so heavy on story content, like did I need 2 hours of cutscenes about a wedding? Why do I have to watch a cutscene just to go to the main map to watch another cutscene?
It's a shame I've been waiting for this game for over a year now and was ecstatic when the full demo was released. I loved the gameplay and the turn based combat is practically seamless and everything I wanted in a replacement for FF tactics. In my defense I'm a busy person and rarely get the chance to play games so I'll be damned if I wait 3 days to get 2 hours to play and just spend it watching cutscenes.
Thanks for the review. I love FE and strategy RPGs, and this review helped solidify my belief that I wasn't getting overhyped for this.
Don’t you think it looks very blurry in handheld mode, I’ve played the demo and although I liked a lot, but the actual game looks worse when you are playing it than when it is in showing you images of the footage when you load it.
FANTASTIC REVIEW! Can't wait to dive in and never want to stop playing. I'm going in Easy and then Normal on NG+ to see all the other endings
Just started playing the demo. First impression is really nice. It remindes me a lot of divinity sin 2 with pixel graphics, which is awesome!
Although they are similar in ways, if you want more comparable games to this check out things like Tactics Ogre PS1, or Fallout 1 or 2. All 3 have choices that change the outcome of story. Final fantasy tactics PS1 is also great.
If i find myself bord with and skipping the story in the demo then should i get this? Or just stick with the merc saga for the same similar enough but way less polished but closer to ffs tactics battle style then this i think cuz the way it'd use turn based vs here u don't move ur entire team but it seems more like was it xcom where u had almost like jrpg style mixed in&i got my butt kicked lol not thr 1st fight but thr 2nd one at the bridge idk it's on sale id been wanting it since before release n wanted to wait for such a sale lol.
The demo sold itself but you're review just made it an even more urgent buy! I was thinking of waiting a week or 2 but Idk I can anymore and might buy it day one when I should be buying concert tickets and camping reservations
👴
But is 60 bucks really breaking bank?
@@tylerwalters2205 it is when phish tickets cost an arm and a leg
Good review of a great game, but for the next one I wish better connections between the wording and shown images or shown gameplay. They seem so disconnected here (and in other video reviews of NL too).
Purchased on release day - safe to say this will be one of my favorite games this year hands down. Everything in here is absolutely incredible. (Im also a fan of those Saturday morning cartoon English voices.) square enix really smacked one outta the park with this one!
How does playing in Handheld mode? Run smooth?
@@neoandroid8586 that’s so funny you asked that because the game has been so damn good I decided to take it with me on the go and play on my breaks at work - it runs very smooth and I’m so glad to know. 10/10 handheld wise in my book
@@azgazr8 Thats awesome, I was asking cause I usually play in docked but since I have started uni everythings been handheld. And for some games that's not great, but I'm really happy Triangle plays well in Handheld.
Thanks for responding 😀
Great review Zion / NL, this along with the demo has earnt an informed purchase from me. Keep up the good work!
Ill always love Square Enix. And I absolutely LOVE Turn Based Battles and Choice Induced Consequences! This will be a must have game! Already looking forward to Triangle Strategy 2! ⭐️🔥👏
It reminds me a lot of Tactics Ogre: Let us cling Together for the PSP. It's really neat.
Good stuff! That’s what I like to hear. I can’t wait to jump on it after work! I’ll be going back and forth w/Eldin Ring, TS, Elex 2, and maybe even some Shadow Warrior 3. My God! So many games!!!
I've only played the first demo, but the game is absolutely on my radar. I loved the Final Fantasy Tactics series and also really enjoyed Octopath Traveler.
Looking forward to grabbing my physical copy in the mail today! ❤️
According to the delivery logistics, my preorder copy will arrive today so I'm very excited!
Yeah, game of the year for me. Fantastic review
You got 9 months to go there so...
My game of the year is most likely gonna be trails from zero and xenoblade 3.
get help
Anyone can tell me what to buy? Im coming from the FE sacred stones haha. Im really confused on the three houses and TS on what to buy? Im kinda skeptical on the 3H cause of the hogwarts shenanigans…
I've been checking CZcams everyday for the last week, just waiting for this review from "you guys" thank you.
As a big big BIG fan of Octopath Traveler.... This game is UNPRECEDENTED
I loved octopath traveler but felt the story and characters were a bit weak, so I’m super excited to play this one if it improves that.
How's the length of the game? Im hoping its close to Ogre tactics lets Cling together/FF tactics.
I want to play this but don’t know where to find the time to put into this one
I was interested in this game since it was announced but skipped out on the demos to avoid any spoilers. I really love the art direction of the game and the gameplay reminds me a lot of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which I loved! So excited to start playing this game!
The gameplay you will find vastly superior. Much more rewarding and difficult
one of my need to play games 2022! thx for the review
Sounds amazing, can't wait to pick it up next week sometime.
ive played the demo, says the game will out the 4th of march, tomorrow? is this true?
Really happy to hear that the story is engaging from start to finish.
I'm still worried about combat and the lack of character progression but the battle design and the variety in units seem to be the focus instead and I say why not. If done well it can be interesting too.
From the prologue demo I can confirm a few things that might make you more confident about combat:
- There's character classes and stat upgrades. The materials to do either seem sparse so it won't feel like Disgaea levels of power spikes, but they seem significant when you can get them.
- The role expression here is amazing. Expect combat to be won by specialists and less by plain roles (e.g. one archer has a blind ability, and another can have a turn-cancelling trap).
- Hard is tolerable since you keep all your XP and Kudos from your failed/abandoned run, meaning you won't have the Fire Emblem issue of banging your head on a map with underleveled chars until you finish the map
@@glasseskun I've played it as well. My issue is that characters learn very few skills and have only one class that doesn't seem to change. Maybe they eventually evolve into another class but still it's not any close to the games it takes heavy inspiration from.
@@sombrego2260 my understanding was that characters do have more classes but it's more of a class evolution than a tree, like they don't have options to evolve, which is fine for me tho
@@guillemmartinez9958 as long as its rewarding
@@alexterieur8813 I mean, there is a progression so hopefully it is in fact rewarding
So it's like Valkyrie profile/fire emblem/octopath traveler?
I love this game. Its tactics 2.0. Battles are challenging but fair. The story is wrenching. The characters are so likable. Sooo worth it
No is not.

Not the game's fault you're bad at trpgs
@@hylianbatman3153 it’s is fault, is not as good as Tactics or ogre battle 😂
You can’t even lose at this game 🤷🏻♂️
So glad my preorder was well placed. Gonna love this.
How about character customization? Class progression? Grinding options to level up the characters? Romance?
Set characters. Each class has 3 tiers no choices. Yeah unlimited grinding. None that I've seen.
@@violentvito6645 Thanks for the reply. Do you think the game is worth it? I'm planning to buy it, but I was hoping there would be the option for selecting and switching classes, adding attribute points, and more importantly, romance!
@@brendonzhang151 no problem, I definitely think it is worth it. I feel like the locked classes while limited, give the characters personality.
Leveling scales, so catching up low level characters is the easiest I've seen. So you still have quite a lot of options on the battlefield. It's just a bit more macro than FFT.
@@violentvito6645 thanks!
nintendo life is one of the only places i trust to review any kind of rpg, let alone srpgs 👍you guys did an amazing job!!
Haven't played yet but this brings back Tactics Ogre feels
Agreed! Although I’m glad that Square Enix has finally released a TBS game in Triangle Strategy, I was really hoping to see a another Tactics Ogre game. Tactics Ogre, when it was under the game company Atlus was my first ever TBS game I played on Game Boy and have been a fan ever since.
I just hope that this game doing well entices SE to give us 3 things:
An Collection of FF Tactics Advanced with the OG FF Tactics and a new FF Tactics set 100s of years in the future in the world of Ivalice.
YESSS! 👏🏼
is this anything like ogre battle 64? That’s one of my favorite games, nobody seems to remember it
What a beauty of a game. The art direction is gorgeous.
Why would anyone think this look good? The pixel style is really good and nostalgic but the contrast and color values are hurting my eyes. I sold my Octopath after 1 hour playing because of this 😞😞
@@okkkk82 I agree, it’s a blurry mess

Thanks for the great review analysis PJ and Zion!
Loved both demos, can't wait to play Triangle Strategy asap tonight!! :D Game of Thrones + Tactics Ogre vibes comin' in strong, I'm so excited~
Disgustingly excited for this!!! I learned that I like tactical games when I bought Fire Emblem Awakening and am so happy games like this exist
Have you played three houses? Cuz if not you should
Mine Triangle Strategy was sent to me today.❤ I was waiting for it since first demo was released. 😊
This is the game I play at night, curled up, headphones in, cat on lap, green tea on table… you get the picture. There’s just such a cozy aura about it.
Square Enix makes beautiful games. I like the art style choice of the game. Reminds me of Golden Sun
Well, well, if it's as good as you say it is, I may have to seriously consider a purchase after all. I was definitely interested, but a bit uncertain about the gameplay and I didn't like much of what I heard of the voice-acting (in particular that for Serenoa himself...). But if the gameplay picks up more as it goes, I can push past the voice acting.
It’s time to switch to the Japanese Dub
@@lougowan7008 I prefer listening to a language I actually understand. Japanese voice acting never really does anything for me. Even if the English voice work is somewhat mediocre, I'd still rather have that.
@@laggalot1012 to be fair I was in your same boat about the voices in English - but I swear to you I got to used to them quickly. I can listen to Benedict talk all day If I had the chance to.
Also if the voice acting isn’t really your vibe but you’re relying on the rest of the game to be great - it’s not great, it’s absolutely fantastic
Oh man, I was almost hoping it wouldn't be good so I wasn't tempted to buy it. I've still barely touched Elden Ring and Horizon: Forbidden West, and still I'm eyeing Gran Turismo 7 and that new Guardians of the Galaxy game that's coming to Game Pass soon. I don't know where I'm gonna find time for all these titles!
Reminds me of Tactics Ogre LUCT. Looks good from what I’ve seen.
I'm so excited. I really like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Fire Emblem so I am pumped
I saw a gameplay yesterday and thought the game was extremely slow at the beginning and indeed the voice acting in english is not the best one. I was not going to buy it but Zion did it again, I’m sold haha
Improved hoshigami? Hoped it adapt hoshigami's deity style and magic combos....ps1 game almost years ago and yet it is much Good....
Is graphic improve?
I pre-ordered the game as soon as I could after playing the first three chapters of the demo that dropped after the Nintendo Direct last month.
Arrived in the post yesterday, so looking forward to continuing the game once I finish Pokemon Legends: Arceus.
The only shame is that it was released side by side with Elden Ring. I'm having a blast with this game, and wish it would of been delayed a few months so it could kf gotten the acclaim it deserves. Such great story telling!
I look into everything similar to Final Fantasy Tactics and when this was announced given Square Enix's involvement it immediately caught my attention. When the demo came out I quickly downloaded it. I wanted to try it but ended up stopping midway through playing because I didn't want to spoil anything for the full game and I already knew it was my type of game that I enjoy.
I got a physical copy and hope this apparent great success will mean they and other game companies will continue to make more games like this in the future.
playing the demo a good fix for the dialogue is turn it to japanese audio english subtitle
For you
@@veambeam k
Or mute the voices altogether !
Why are the comments so aggressive towards your suggestion 😂
Issues with using japanese voices with English subtitles is that no games ever gives us both a dub subtitles and japanese subtitles. So, you are gonna be dealing with what they are saying not really matching with what's written. Imagine watching anime in japanese but the subtitles are for the dub version. It is really bad with game like xenoblade X and 2 where localization is very pronounced.
first time nintendlife review, IGNs isn't posted yet. Def subscribing here as well
So stoked for this game!
This is by the same team as Octopath Traveller, right? The art style is *identical*
Grid based combat >>> forgot this was coming out this month. It looks like classic Fire Emblem, no gimmicks just strategic combat 🔥
*it's coming out tomorrow
Except that combat is one unit at a time based on speed and not Fire Emblem style one team at a time.
Fabricated fear as a form of control you say...? Hmmmm sounds familiar

Octopath is insanely fun old school rpg. I think it may have the best suited ost than any game as well.
@@lordrikudouzero9119 okay cool! :) the collectors edition of triangle strategy seems to have a kind of tabletop-like game included, so I bought that for switch to get a look. Octopath Traveller I'll get for pc sometime later. Even though I'm pretty sure TS will also come to pc at some point.
yea well if nintendo didnt charge AAA prices for these 2d games!!!

How much grinding is there or can you just lower the difficulty to get past the battles.
did u work for ign before?.. ur voice sounds familiar
This makes me IMMENSELY excited for the front mission remake (please, please, PLEASE do justice to the name🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻)
In my opinion this game is worth the buy, I love classic RPGs and don't really like strategic RPGs but I love this game, the soundtrack is really good and the story is really gripping and (for a person who doesn't like making big choices for people) stressful, lol the first weekend the game came out I literally played for a day and a half straight before crashing ( mostly because I was grinding levels) and I still haven't finished it, I'm in chapter 13 and I've been through some battles and difficult situations that will really frustrate you lol but overall I highly recommend it and the 2D hd graphics are nice for nostalgia just like in octopath I really hope they keep this look for rpgs
Very good review. I'm excited to play it tomorrow as I forgot this game was coming out. I love Fire Emblem so a little sad there is no perma death here, but if it is as difficult as you say, I'm sure it will be good
Same im used to playing with the high stakes of losing a character
I should finish octopath traveler first…i do want this though.
